THE POWER OF PERSISTENCE
By Jennifer StarlingI asked CEO Eric Worthan via text message: “If you had one inspirational word to lead us into 2023, what would it be?” Effortlessly, he stated persistence. Persistence is defined as continuing firmly or obstinately in the course of action in spite of difficulty or oppression Persistence is succeeding despite the roadblocks in our path. This takes focus, and let’s be honest; it also takes guts. It takes overcoming self-doubt and forging ahead despite the uncertainty that may come from the circumstances.
Every person will encounter setbacks in their life, both personal and professional. Nothing proved that better than those who experienced Hurricane Ian in the fall of 2022. This catastrophic storm taught us that the unpredictable sometimes happens no matter how well we prepare It also taught us that when it does, leaning on each other allows us to endure and overcome.
James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, says, "So often we convince ourselves that change is only meaningful if there is some large, visible outcome associated with it. Whether it is losing weight, building a business, traveling the world, or any other goal, we often put pressure on ourselves to make some earth-shattering improvement that everyone will talk about". However, if we focus on growing 1% every day, this small incremental change will lead us to where we want to be Clear says, "In the beginning, there is no difference between making a choice that is 1 percent better or 1 percent worse. (In other words, it won’t impact you very much today.)
But as time goes on, these small improvements or declines compound, and you suddenly find a very big gap between people who make slightly better decisions on a daily basis and those who don’t".
If you get one percent better each day for one year, you’ll end up thirty-seven times better by the time you’re done.
Looking at 2022 in the rearview mirror, may we see the powerful role that growing 1% plays in our lives getting 1% better every day has allowed us to travel through setbacks that have come our way. The 1% also enables us to improve relationally, knowing that we are truly better together. Seeing the power of small choices may not seem like a big deal in the short- term; however, in the long term showing up for each other 1% more every day adds up 1% more allows us to persist even when we think we can’t. 1% more allows you to reach out to a team member or friend and say, “I’ve got you ” As we wrap up 2022, may we never forget the reminder of the power of tiny changes. Together, we are our best selves, personally, clinically, and professionally. Let’s use that togetherness to persist in 2023 and truly have a remarkable year.
May you and your family have a Happy Holiday season and a blessed New Year.
