Greetings: The Parkway School District is truly one of the premier school districts in the St. Louis area. Traditionally a high achieving school district, Parkway continued its history of excellence this year, ranking as the highest achieving school district among large Missouri districts. The Parkway School District prides itself in meeting the needs of all; students, families and educators. Our faculty includes National Board CertiďŹ ed Teachers, nationally and regionally recognized teachers, with nearly 80 percent holding advanced degrees. OUR SCHOOLS TODAY, PARKWAY HAS 18 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, FIVE MIDDLE SCHOOLS, FIVE HIGH SCHOOLS — four traditional and one non-traditional — and an early childhood center. With about 17,300 students, it is one of the largest districts in St. Louis County and in Missouri. PARKWAY’S 28 SCHOOLS AND EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER ARE RENOWNED for their achievements, with 14 Blue Ribbon Awards for Excellence in Education from the U.S. Department of Education and 17 Gold Star Awards from the State of Missouri. While each school is unique, collectively they make up one of the highest performing school districts in the country.

JANUARY South High’s 2012 yearbook staff received a superior rating from the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association — its highest rating in 10 years. The West High boys’ varsity soccer team earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) High School Team award.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon visited Oak Brook Elementary to congratulate Parkway on its continued academic success, reputation for excellence and sound fiscal management noting that Parkway is one of just a handful of Missouri districts to achieve an AAA bond rating. He noted that Parkway schools are among the best in the state partly because of the district’s early childhood programs.
FEBRUARY Parkway fourth grader, Surya Jaladi, won first place and ranked best in Missouri in the “InvestWrite” essay competition. Fifth grader, Bennett Davis, won second place in the region in the Missouri Stock Market Game. Both competitions were sponsored
by the Missouri Council on Economic Education.

For the 11th consecutive year, Parkway was awarded a “Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting” from the Association of School Business Officials. Seven Parkway students were named to the Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri’s top academic students in the graduating class of 2013.
Parkway Central Middle student, Ruimin Wu, became the only Missouri finalist in “Doodle 4 Google,” a competition that invited students to redesign Google’s homepage logo. Eight Parkway sophomores were named to the 2013 Missouri Scholars Academy, a three-week program held on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia for 330 of Missouri’s gifted students.

North High Women’s A Cappella group, Powder Room, took third place in the international final competition of Varsity Vocals ICHSA, and the North High Men’s A Cappella group, Men’s Room, earned second place in the ICHSA St. Louis regional semi-final competition. Greg Bergner, Central Middle, was named the St. Louis Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year for 2012-13 by The St. Louis Associationof Secondary School Principals. Rachel Zhang, South High, qualified for the U.S. Mathematical Olympiad, a nine-hour, six-question test. She was one of 500 out of 210,000 in the nation who qualified.
MAY Parkway Central, North, South and West high schools were ranked among America’s Best High Schools by Newsweek Magazine! They all also ranked among the top 15 best high schools in Missouri in providing collegeready graduates. West Middle student, Gokul Venkatachalam, made it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee semifinals for the second year in a row. Zachary Heiman, Central High School junior, earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT college admissions and placement exam. The St. Louis Symphony named Winifred Crock, Central High orchestra director, its 2013 Educator of the Year. Jennifer Wayland, Parkway Central, beat 18,700 other entrants to win the Major League Baseball and Scholastic Publishing’s “Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life” essay contest honoring Jackie Robinson.
JUNE Three West Middle teachers, Debbie Difani, Kristin Ruzicka and Deanna Murrel, were awarded a $10,000 Emerson Gold Star Grant to fund a new video space. Six Parkway schools — Barretts, Craig, McKelvey, River Bend, Ross and Southwest Middle — earned a Promising Practices award from the Character Education Partnership.

STUDEN T ACHI E V E ME N T 2013 COLLEGE ENTRANCE E XAMS The American College Test (ACT) and Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) are the college entrance exams used to determine whether students can enter certain universities and qualify for scholarships. Scores on the ACT range from 1 to 36. The highest total score on the SAT is 2400 points.
2013 MISSOURI ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (MAP) TESTS MAP tests are state-required assessments used to evaluate school districts for state annual performance reviews and for measuring academic progress as required for state accreditation. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that Missouri’s academic performance standards in reading and mathematics are among the most rigorous in the nation. With nearly 9,000 downloads in a few months, the Parkway 21 Schools mobile app ranked in the Top 100 Education Apps in the Apple App Store in 2013.
FI N A N CI ALS Parkway is funded primarily through local sources, and has a current expenditure per average daily attendance (ADA) of $11,833 per year. Parkway’s 2013 total residential tax rate of $4.07 is fourth lowest among 23 county districts. The district operates with a sound, balanced budget and consistently earns exceptional ratings and national awards for financial management and reporting. The independent rating agency Standard & Poor’s has rated Parkway’s bonds at AAA, the highest available for school districts. Parkway is one of only four school districts in Missouri to earn the S&P AAA status.
