Auto Super Shoppes launches new training academy THE GRAND OPENING HAD TO GIVE WAY TO COVID BUT NEW TRAINEES ARE EXPECTED SOON t’s a common cry in workshops up and down the country: where is the next generation of technicians coming from? Auto Super Shoppes’ national business manager, Kellie Tremayne, confirms it’s a hot topic among workshop owners. However, when she has asked them where their own apprentices were, they often said they couldn’t get the right kind of people: those who would turn up on time, day after day, who were keen to learn, and who even seemed interested in the trade. She lists a number of contributing factors but the result remained that some graduates of other training institutions still lacked basic requirements for employment. “They might have passed the units but they are not necessarily taught how to be a good employee,” she says. Auto Super Shoppes decided to do something

about it. It set up its own training academy in Auckland, offering 12 students at a time a 12-week course comprising 24 modules based on the skills that workshops wanted in their new entrants. “They said, ‘If you can give me someone who can do this, we’ll hire them,’” Kellie says.

ACADEMY EXPANDS And it worked. So well, in fact, that the Auto Super Shoppes Automotive Academy has shifted to new larger premises but still in Albany, where it can now run courses for 20 students using two classrooms and three hoists. The grand opening was cancelled due to Covid but the first intake of new students will arrive when lockdown permits. Over the academy’s first four years 116 students entered, 93 graduated, and all 93 found jobs in the industry. Kellie says the course doesn’t qualify for

government funding because it doesn’t meet some criteria around pastoral care and learning support. “It doesn’t mollycoddle them; it’s quite oldfashioned like that.” She says students are interviewed to assess their aptitude and have to pass a test to enter. They have to turn up on time, dress appropriately, and in a fit state to learn, treat people with respect, and generally have everything about them an employer would want, which includes having a passion for the industry. Another difference is that the academy course for new entrants is not free. It costs $8600, which helps establish a degree of keenness on the motor trade. Kellie says the fee is reflective of a premiumlevel industry training with proven results. While funding can be arranged, Kellie says if this money is coming from the bank of mum and dad it can still be good value because, after just 12 weeks, the student can be in paid employment. Meanwhile, students on nine-month courses still have half a year of study ahead of them, with much less certain job prospects at the end of it. The short course also works well for people wanting to switch careers into the motor trade. Experienced educator and full-time tutor Rob Humphreys helped develop the 24 modules with

o the government has pushed back the start date of its feebate scheme by three months. Minister of Transport Michael Wood says the extra time was given because of the current delta outbreak meaning the clean car discount rebates will continue to March 31 and fees will begin from April 1. He said this will help give the industry more time to gear up. The current rebates on electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will continue until March 31. That means the current surge in sales in qualifying hybrid and EV cars will continue, converting more of the fleet, but it also means those wanting to buy new diesel utes before they attract fees will also continue. On the plus side, they are likely to be more efficient than the vehicles they will replace.

the founders of Auto Super Shoppes, David Storey and Geoff Harper, with input and feedback from the group. Kellie says every graduate who leaves the course can, among other things, service a car, load it on and off a hoist safely, rotate wheels, fix tyres, identify every component type, and order parts. In other words, the students are work ready and will be useful from day one. On Fridays, the students go out into workshops for on-site training, and that is when the academy’s classrooms are available for in-house training for Auto Super Shoppe members. These training days keep them up with the play on latest developments in the industry and expand individual skill sets.

PRACTICAL SUPPORT

The next generation: academy students ready to get down to business

Auto Channel Issue #40 October 2021

Kellie said industry sponsor Bapcor made a generous contribution to the new academy premises in Piermark Drive. Bapcor has supplied the three hoists and a modern Volkswagen car for students to work on, and it will provide each graduate with a starter pack of tools to help them launch their new career. The Auto Super Shoppes organisation began 14 years ago when two workshop owners decided to get together to establish a brand that would signify a higher level of service and professionalism to customers. Kellie says the reasons workshops want to join the group often aren’t the reasons they stay. She says they might get a fleet car in for servicing only to learn the fleet stipulates Auto Super Shoppes only, or they have seen marketing online they like. However, she says, what members value is the chance to talk with other workshop operators at regional zone meetings or the annual conference. Marketing and promotion opportunities are all optional. “It’s not one size fits all, and we don’t tell people how to run their business.” However, the training opportunities held at least every quarter, and exclusive to Auto Super Shoppes, are well attended, especially the new service manager courses. New higher level courses for managers who don’t touch the tools are also in development. New Escape Hybrid joins New Zealand range FORD IS EXPANDING ITS LINE-UP OF ELECTRIFIED NEW ESCAPE SUVS WITH THE NEW FORD ESCAPE HYBRID ord says the self-charging hybrid (no plug-in) can deliver up to 1000 km of petrol-electric and pureelectric driving between fill-ups based on a fuel efficiency from 5.4 l/100 km. “Now with a full hybrid coming to join the plugin hybrid, Escape customers will have an excellent range to choose from and they can match an Escape to their particular needs with all offering smart capability alongside great fuel economy and low emissions,” says Ford New Zealand managing director Simon Rutherford. The self-charging Escape Hybrid’s 1.1 kWh battery is automatically replenished both by the 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine and using regenerative charging when coasting or braking. An electric motor supports petrol engine fuel efficiency, or it can deliver pure-electric driving. Escape Hybrid automatically switches seamlessly between power configurations according to the driving scenario. The ST-Line and ST-Line X Hybrids are also the first Escape models to combine an electrified powertrain with the option of Ford’s intelligent allwheel drive technology.

F

ESCAPE PRACTICALITY, HYBRID EFFICIENCY The new Ford Escape was developed from the ground up to incorporate electrified powertrains, maximising spaciousness and support driving refinement. The Escape Hybrid can pull away smoothly from a standstill using electric power alone, particularly useful in city and stop-start driving scenarios. No figures are available but Ford says the full-hybrid powertrain supports pure-electric driving ‘for short periods’ but the petrol engine avoids range anxiety. With no need for customers to plug in to charge the battery, Escape Hybrid should appeal to customers wanting an electrified powertrain who have limited access to external charging solutions at home or places of work. The 60-cell, 1.1 kWh battery pack uses a liquid cooling system that eliminates the need for a cooling fan, helping reduce noise levels for greater cabin refinement. Optimised cooling also allows battery cells to be packaged closely together saving space in the cabin which includes more than a metre of headroom for front row occupants and up to 1481 litres of cargo space behind the front seats.

The Escape ST-Line and ST-Line X Hybrid are available with Ford Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, which measures how the car’s wheels are gripping the road surface and automatically adjust torque delivery between the front and rear drive. An allwheel drive disconnect feature supports optimised fuel efficiency by automatically reverting to frontwheel drive in favourable driving conditions.

THE RANGE The Ford Escape is now available in the following electrified models: • Escape FWD Hybrid • Escape ST-Line FWD Hybrid • Escape ST-Line AWD Hybrid • Escape ST-Line X AWD Hybrid • Escape FWD PHEV • Escape ST-Line X FWD PHEV Pricing of the new Escape Hybrid will be available closer to arrival in Q2, 2022. All new Escapes come with Ford’s five-year, unlimited kilometre full factory warranty. Further adding to the ownership experience, Ford Service Benefits also bring Escape owners Roadside Assistance as well as a Service Loan Car and sat-nav mapping updates where available. Ford New Zealand has three plug-in hybrid vehicles available, the Escape PHEV, the Transit

Custom Van PHEV and the Tourneo PHEV. The Escape and Transit Custom Van qualify for the $5,750 government rebate on new PHEV vehicles. The second quarter of 2022 will see the introduction of an all-electric Transit Cargo, offering a range of up to 350km. “A range of 350km will likely be more than enough for the majority of city-based drivers, such as couriers and tradesmen, and is certainly far in excess of the average distance most people drive each day,” Simon said. For customers who still require the versatility of a Ute, the 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo Ranger with its 10-Speed Automatic transmission is fuel-efficient and one of the lowest carbon emitting options in the Ute segment. This relatively low CO2 will translate into being at the lighter end of the penalties in the Ute segment in 2022. The investment in this new technology has helped deliver more torque and power than the 3.2 engine – giving Ford customers what they need from a performance perspective, but with the added benefit of a lower CO2 footprint. “There’s been a real step-change in the way EV and PHEV models are viewed, which makes it an exciting time to be bringing new energy powertrain options to the market,” said Mr Rutherford.

NEW RANGER IN THE METAL Meanwhile Ford New Zealand has also released the first official glimpse of the next generation Ranger. It will be revealed later this year and launched in 2022. Ford promises customers will be driving the smartest, most capable and most versatile Ranger yet. The shots don’t give much away but most customers will be relieved it has the same basic silhouette as the previous top-selling versions.

Farmer Trade centre: 30 years of automotive excellence WITH 13 VEHICLE BRANDS AND OVER 600 VEHICLES UNDER ONE ROOF, ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S MOST AWARDED AUTOMOTIVE DEALER GROUPS IS TO BE FOUND IN THE BAY OF PLENTY armer Autovillage offers a one stop shop for total vehicle care service. It includes servicing, wheels, tyres, windscreen repairs and replacements, genuine parts, a brand new paint and alloy wheel repair centre, as well as a dedicated trade parts centre. The family-run business was founded 30 years ago in 1991 as Bay Nissan. With a team of 12, the dealership on the corner of Elizabeth St and Cameron Rd won Nissan Dealer of the Year seven years in a row. The business soon expanded with the inclusion of other brands. Its success was attributed to innovations such as pioneering weekend opening as well as its customer service. The current Farmer Autovillage, the first of its kind in New Zealand, began in October 2008 on Hewletts Road at Mount Maunganui’s busiest intersection. The buildings include eight showrooms, state of the art workshops, a business lounge, café, and carwash. Onsite business managers can help with competitive finance and insurance options on new and used vehicles.

F

Farmer Autovillage has claimed a raft of industry awards over the years. This year, Farmer Autovillage won coveted dealership of the year awards for Audi, Jeep, Volkswagen Commercial, Volkswagen Passenger and Volkswagen overall, alongside several individual awards. Group managing director Mike Farmer and group parts manager Mark Ferguson identified the need to support the growing trade network in New Zealand and set up a dedicated trade parts team solely focused on trade customers. The Farmer Trade Centre team initially started with three team members and has quickly grown to seven full time sales specialists and nine warehouse staff across three warehouses. Farmer Trade Centre manager Mitchell Roberston says genuine is the best way to go when servicing or repairing customers’ vehicles; parts that are built to the manufacturer’s specifications and designed to fit right, the first time. The Farmer Trade Centre provides genuine parts for 17 international marques: Nissan, Audi,

Volkswagen, Skoda, Subaru, Seat, Cupra, Jeep, Ram, MG, Haval, GWM, Rollerteam, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Dodge, and Chrysler. In 2021, Farmer Trade Centre opened a 2000 square metre warehousing and distribution centre to accommodate an even larger range of spare parts. The trade centre stocks an extensive range of service items, replacement parts, fluids, electrical items, windscreens, panels and can rapidly procure any unstocked parts. Mitchell says the team is always looking for innovative solutions to support the network and has teamed up with the Blackfern automotive cooperative so now trade customers nationwide can access their service. Call the Farmer Trade Centre team on 0800 20 30 10 to order for nationwide delivery. Any purchases in October from Farmer Trade Centre puts Blackfern members into the draw for 10,000 reward points.

Revolutionary balancer clamps REPCO LAUNCHES THE NEW WHEEL BALANCER WHEEL CLAMPING SYSTEM, SPEEDPLATE EBA PRO he new Speedplate EBA offers accurate wheel attachment for the lifetime of a wheel balancer using studs aligned by planetary gears, instead of the usual tapered cones which can suffer wear, or imprecise mounting, leading to inaccurate readings. The speed plates are made in the USA from ultra-strong, aircraft-grade aluminium plate, and they have been designed specifically for high volume, lifetime use. What’s more, each of the durable, planetary gear-mounted studs is designed to detach from the main plate if dropped, which reduces the potential for internal product damage. A simple visual alignment check allows the gear to reattach in seconds. There are three lug plates for four, five, and sixstud wheels. Mount the right plate and to adjust for different bolt spacing simply rotate one gear and the other gears will follow along. The configuration will automatically lock into place via the wave spring. Quick change ‘torque tips’, which match the shape of the wheel nut for an accurate fit on the wheel, provide wide compatibility with a large range of rim types.

T

The E400-400-50 Kit includes the four-lug speed plate, which is also suitable for eight-lug rims, the five-lug speed plate, the 6-lug speed plate, and B, C, and E pattern torque tips, an extended version

of pattern C (six of each), and a wall mount storage board. For more information call the Repco Equipment Specialists on 0800 237 726.

Century Yu-Fit configures battery management systems CENTURY’S YU-FIT CONFIGURATOR GIVES VEHICLES A HEADS-UP THAT A NEW BATTERY HAS BEEN INSTALLED THAT NEEDS A DIFFERENT CHARGING REGIME atching new battery characteristics with the complex demands of modern computer controlled electrical systems calls for a system dialogue. It is no longer good enough just to install a new battery in a vehicle and send it on its way. Even if the battery is the right basic construction and capacity, a modern car’s electrical system may not recognise or adapt to the new battery’s different characteristics. Luckily, the configuration of these vehicle energy management systems can now be carried out simply and easily using the Century Yu-Fit battery configurator tool. This configuration is required because a brandnew replacement battery requires a very different charging strategy compared to the battery which has reached the end of its serviceable life. Applying the old charging strategy to a new battery could

M

10

Auto Channel Issue #40 October 2021

result in a loss of Stop Start system functionality, loss of vehicle system functionality, plus increased fuel usage and C02 emissions. The Yu-Fit tool can be used to configure the replacement battery to the vehicle’s active energy management system — informing the vehicle that a new battery of the correct type and performance has been installed. It will also inform the charging system of the new battery characteristics and ensure the correct charging strategy is applied right from the start. Configuring a vehicle with the Yu-Fit tool following battery replacement will ensure the vehicle’s charging, energy management, and system functionalities will perform as intended, and ensure that your customer will receive the best possible performance from their battery purchase. The Century Yu-Fit tool comes pre-loaded

with profiles for all common vehicle manufacturer makes and models, and receives regular updates to help keep pace with the latest changes to the New Zealand new car market. It is accessed by simply connecting the tool to your PC. CoolDrive expands New Zealand operations COOLDRIVE AUTO PARTS IS EXPANDING ITS OPERATIONS IN NEW ZEALAND WITH THE OPENING OF A NEW BRANCH IN HAMILTON oolDrive’s new branch based in Te Rapa, Hamilton, also gives the automotive parts distributor a new main distribution centre for all of New Zealand. Overseeing operations is CoolDrive New Zealand’s general manager, Aaron Carr, who has relocated from Auckland to Hamilton. “The opening of this new branch is a logical decision based around strong customer support and demand in the region, which had previously been serviced by two remote representatives,” Aaron Carr said. “It’s incredibly exciting to be increasing CoolDrive’s presence and bringing such leading brands to the area. The location is a great distribution hub for the central North Island and we have a strong following that requires service and supply. Our customers asked, we listened, and responded accordingly.” Supporting Aaron Carr at Hamilton will be a team of eight, including branch manager Brent Harris, who has relocated from CoolDrive Mt Wellington’s operations. Long-term South Auckland sales representative Sam Wilburn has been appointed branch manager at Mt Wellington.

C

CoolDrive established official operations in New Zealand five years ago, and the current expansion shows the level of support it has won in the local automotive market. Setting up Auckland’s Mt Wellington and Albany branches first, CoolDrive then expanded into Christchurch to service the South Island. “Our product offering has grown significantly over this time, as well as our team, and this development into a distribution centre will enable us to offer even more quality products and brands,” added CoolDrive New Zealand’s national sales

manager Peter Connelly. “It is very exciting to be a part of an Australasian business with great vision and structure. Possibly the best part of CoolDrive is that it is family owned and operated, by a family with a passion for the industry and motor sport.” As part of this recent operations expansion, CoolDrive has also launched a new van delivery service across its New Zealand branch network. CoolDrive’s Hamilton branch will be located at 3 Tasman Road, Te Rapa, call 0800 327 868. For more information see cooldrive.co.nz.

AS WHEELS HAVE GOT LARGER, WHEEL LIFTERS HAVE MOVED INTO THE WORKSHOP MAINSTREAM heel lifters were once the preserve of high throughput wheel shops, or those dealing with large commercial vehicles. Automaster’s equipment supplier Gary Cotterell says more workshops are now seeing them as essential equipment. “Wheel sizes have increased substantially over the years, making them heavier, and workshop owners and managers are taking more responsibility for protecting staff from injury, including sprains and strains, and back problems in particular,” he says. “In the past you would want a lot of wheel work or heavy-duty work to justify a wheel lifter, but they are also now more cost effective and there’s a wide range of options.” Automaster has six options, four from Italian wheel equipment specialist and constant innovator, Corghi. The WL-60 unit is designed to integrate with its range of tyre machines, literally a bolt-on option. The TT-R and TT-O machines are pneumatic scissor

W

lifts for wheels up to 80kg. The TT-O Zero Gravity has an automatic self-balancing system and it ensures wheels are perpendicular, a critical part of centering the wheel, which can be difficult to maintain when locking a wheel on a balancer. The Corghi Partner 70 is a mobile batteryoperated wheel lifter designed to make it easy to take wheels off a vehicle and transport them to a tyre machine or balancer, without any physical strain. It is apparently the only lifter of its type that doesn’t have forward protruding fork legs. Automaster has also designed and specified its own pneumatic portable lifter, designed to provide simple and robust lifting of wheels weighing up to 80kg from a minimum height of 130mm to a maximum height of 1030mm. The Automaster PFL-65 is the sixth option, another compressed air scissor lift with a sliding

The new distribution centre features more than 1000sqm of full-height racking, a new showroom, customer service area, multiple parking bays for customers and pick-up, meeting spaces, and a conference room. “This relocation does not just expand our warehousing and distribution capacities, but allows us to expand our New Zealand head office capacity. Our rapid growth in New Zealand allows for expansion in all areas, which has positioned us to remain on top of the growing demands in all fields of our business,” says R&J Batteries’ chief executive officer, Stuart Hamilton. Since merging with local battery distributor Acme Batteries in 2019, R&J Batteries has opened branches in Christchurch and Hamilton. The Hamilton branch, located at 31 Clem Newby Road in Te Rapa, is primarily a warehouse strategically situated for distribution purposes, supporting the company’s other warehouse in Albany. The merger with Acme also made R&J Batteries the exclusive distributor of Koba batteries. Manufactured in South

Interested job seekers can send their expressions of interest, or apply directly for available roles at the Wiri, Christchurch, Hamilton, and Albany operations. On the digital front, the battery distributor has launched a brand new website, designed to be fast, responsive, and user-friendly. R&J Batteries’ rapid growth required a new website to cater to the increased website traffic, and to cater to R&J Batteries’ plans for future growth. The new website comes with a toggle function that allows visitors in New Zealand to display content specific to their geographical location. Additional website improvements have been made to the battery finder and cross reference guide tools, allowing visitors to view information easily and effectively to determine the best battery for their application. Over the next few months, R&J Batteries plans to make further improvements to the website, adding new features, tools, and resources. Continuing its ongoing commitment to quality and safety, R&J Batteries has recently renewed its ISO accreditation. ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) is an independent, non-governmental, and international organisation that develops standards to ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency of products, services, and systems. R&J Batteries is ISO accredited in ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems, ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management, and PAS 99:2012 Integrated Management Systems. These ISO accreditations strengthen consumer confidence, knowing that the battery distributor’s product quality, environmental policies, and OHS policies successfully meet international standards. Steiner scissor lift ideal for all-round access CHRISTCHURCH’S SIGNLAB SPECIALISES IN MAKING ITS CUSTOMERS STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD hen it comes to vinyl wrapping a vehicle, SignLab director Jonny Martin says ease of access to panels is paramount. You don’t want to be working at an awkward height. That’s why the company selected the Steiner LT280S scissor lift. It gives fast access to all sides of the vehicle, with no posts or control pillars to get in the way. The 2800kg lifting capacity more than covers the average weight of a van, and the adjustable approach ramps can quickly extend the length of the platform to accommodate a longer wheelbase. Single phase and portable with an attachable wheeled dolly, the Steiner LT280S is a straightforward addition to workshops that want to add flexibility to the format of their workspace. The hydraulic system makes raising and lowering smooth and efficient. Advanced hydraulics are also used in locking the platform. To maximise vehicle stability and security, 38mm and 78mm rubber pad sets are included as standard. With decades of experience to call on, Jonny

and the team knew what they wanted when it came to reliable kit to help them get the job done. SignLab rounded out their two-scissor lift set-up with the Steiner Professional LT240CF-SP 4-tonne, two-post hoist for larger vehicles. Another lift from

12 steps to safe, effective jump-starting IT SEEMS STRAIGHTFORWARD BUT IT PAYS TO CHECK WHETHER YOU ARE REALLY KEEPING YOURSELF AND VEHICLE SYSTEMS SAFE WHEN JUMP-STARTING A DEAD CAR s many vehicles around the country, especially in Auckland, will have been unused for some time, it’s likely more of them will need a hand to get back on the road. Here’s a checklist to compare your own practices with. 1. Wear protective gear Protective eyewear is often overlooked when jumpstarting a vehicle. Also, remove rings or other metal items when working around vehicle when starting batteries. They could cause a short if contacted with the battery, which could cause serious injury. 2. Review the potential cause for the no start condition Was there a drain left on that depleted the starting battery such as a light or other load? If so, address that cause and give the battery several minutes to recover prior to attempting a jump start. 3. Make sure that your jump starter (if it can service multiple voltages) is configured properly To jump start a vehicle/system that needs 12V, be sure your jump starter is set to 12V. 4. Establish your vehicle connection First connect the Positive (red, +) clamp to the vehicle’s positive battery terminal or alternate starting point (as recommended by the vehicle’s manufacturer), and always take care preventing the

A

6-9AM WEEKDAYS hauraki.co.nz

leads from getting in the path of any moving engine parts. It is a good practice to rock the clamp on the terminal to penetrate any corrosion that may be present on the terminal. Remember that your jump starter leads are connected to a live battery! Always take care to ensure that you avoid incidental contact with the vehicle or with the opposite lead, both of which could short the jump starter and result in personal injury. 5. Complete your vehicle connection Connect the Negative clamp (black, -) to a proper vehicle ground (an unpainted heavy metal connection, such as the vehicle frame or an engine ground). Never connect to the carburetor, fuel lines, painted surfaces, or any moving part. 6. ON/OFF switch If your jump starter is equipped with an ON/OFF switch, now is the time to turn it to the ON position. 7. Position yourself All participants should now be positioned away from the vehicle battery and jump starter. After 3 seconds of cranking, if the vehicle doesn’t start, stop. Wait a while, preferably 2-3 minutes and attempt the start again. The problem may not be the battery.

A jump starter will not solve many problems. 8. Once the vehicle is started, begin the disconnect process First disconnect the Negative (black, -) clamp from the vehicle ground. Remember that you are connected to a live battery and care should be taken not to allow the clamp to touch the vehicle or the positive lead once it is removed from the vehicle ground. Properly secure the Negative clamp to the unit. 9. ON/OFF switch (again) If your jump starter is equipped with an ON/ OFF switch, now is the time to turn it to the OFF position. 10. Disconnect the positive clamp Disconnect the Positive (red, +) clamp from the vehicle’s positive battery terminal or alternate starting point. Properly secure the Positive clamp to the unit. 11. Check the jump start for corrosion Once the jump-starting process is finished, check the jump starter for corrosion that may have transferred to the clamps or other wear and tear clamps or address other wear and tear before putting it away before putting it away. Corrosion can be wiped off the clamps with a shop towel to avoid rust, discoloration, or other deterioration. Also, the unit can be cleaned with a warm cloth if necessary. 12. Charge the jump starter Finally, charge the unit prior to storage. Keeping your unit fully charged is the best way to get a long life from it. Storing the unit in a discharged state for a long period of time will reduce battery life.

Racelab means business RACECAR PREPARATION TEAM SPREADS ITS EXPERTISE THROUGH NEW RETAIL DIVISION acelab offers a complete race car preparation and raceday support service often supporting several cars and drivers at race meetings, but the company is also rapidly expanding its portfolio of services. Manager Neil Garner brought his F1, GT3, and GT4 experience when he joined the team from the UK two-and-half years ago to accelerate its transition from supporting its owner’s top-shelf racing cars into a full-spectrum commercial racepreparation service. Racelab in Rosedale, Auckland, now has a retail store and has taken on the agency for a number of race-related product lines, such as Sabelt harnesses, seats, clothing, and steering wheels. They also offer Nitron shocks, developed in the UK’s ‘Motorsport Valley’ in Oxfordshire, and fireproof race suits and base layers from Sabelt and Walero, and a host of other performance-oriented accessories, from fire extinguishers to fasteners. Neil says the retail side of the business is expanding rapidly. It will be bringing in a new line of racing helmets for both motorsport and marine applications to add to its helmet and Hans neck brace system offerings, and will soon announce a new line in performance hoses and hydraulic

R

components. Racelab also distributes PIAA high-performance halogen and LED bulbs and silicone wipers. Neil says Racelab is looking for other resellers around the country to partner with on these new product lines. Race car preparation encompasses the full range of services from restoration, metal fabrication, through engine, gearbox, and suspension rebuilds, to performance upgrades and tuning, roll cage design and installation. Support on race days can include delivering cars to the track on the team’s 22m transporter, and providing pit crews with telemetry analysis and full mobile workshop support. “Customers can just arrive and drive,” says Neil. “We store and prepare the cars and look after everything for them.” The engineering side of the eight-person strong business also keeps growing. “We have a very big fabrication department now,” says Neil. “We do a lot of roll cages, aluminium tanks, and modifications. We’ve just put a 20B in an RX7 and done the gearbox modifications.” Getting cars through LVV certification is also a growing side of the business.

Racelab is currently redeveloping the suspension on an imported Ford GT 40 replica. Repairs to crashed vehicles take particular care as panels need to be repaired to OEM specifications, welding needs to be certified, and all repairs have to be inspected before painting to avoid expensive rework. “It’s certainly not getting any easier,” says Neil, although experience in the field clearly counts. Moving or storing lubricants or liquids, the answer is Raasm HANDLING BULK PRODUCTS AND LIQUIDS CLEANLY AND RELIABLY ADDS TO EFFICIENCY pgrading or designing a new workshop, paying attention to oil, lubricant storage, and dispensing systems will pay off in improved efficiency and satisfaction levels among staff. Italian manufacturer Raasm offers a wide range of products including pneumatic oil pumps, powder-coated carbon steel retractable hose reels for oils, air and water; digital, standard or pre-set oil delivery hand pieces, waste oil receivers, mobile equipment for all drum sizes, and much more. Distributor and fluid management consultants Emco supplies and installs a wide range of Raasm commercial and industrial storage, distribution, and dispensing equipment products for oils, coolants and grease. “We have faith in the efficiency of our equipment and take pride in not just in the aesthetics of the Raasm product but also in its ongoing durability and reliability,” says Emco director James Driscoll. “One of the great things about Raasm products is that not only are they professionally made with great pride by their owner, but they are also cost effective. The products just work – they don’t give you problems.” While a Raasm pump can send oil to an oil bar with self-closing taps for dispensing into standard oil jugs, it would be more efficient to send oil along pipework at medium or high pressure, depending on distance, to a Raasm retractable hose reel. A wall, floor, or ceiling mounted hose reel can cover

up to three work bays with up to 20m of hose. Its electronic dispensing nozzle can be programmed to dispense the required quantity of oil. The nozzles have both resettable meters, that you can zero before each fill, and lifetime total meters, which keep count of overall oil usage. Depending on the pump, the flow of oil into the vehicle’s engine can be up to eight litres per minute for engines that can accept that flow rate. Draining engines is also easier using a Raasm mobile waste oil receiver which holds up to 90L of waste oil. This mobile receiver can be rolled under the vehicle, and the drain bowl raised to the sump height for draining without spillage. When the trolley is full, the outlet hose can be connected to a waste tank and it can be emptied by pressurising the

receiver (at low pressure). Emco offers a complete workshop liquids and lubricants planning, design, and installation service which can include the latest industry approved double-skinned storage tanks, and carbon or stainless steel piping systems. These installations provide clean contamination-free product, ease of handling, and they make a powerful visual statement about workshop efficiency to staff and customers alike. Whether you are a small garage or a large commercial operation, Emco provides expert technical advice, problem-solving on equipment issues, and workshop installations fit for purpose. Do the extra test to be sure OCCASIONALLY, A VEHICLE WILL TRIGGER A SUSPICION ABOUT A FAULT, OR THERE COULD BE AN ALTERNATIVE EXPLANATION FOR A DIAGNOSIS. AN EXTRA TEST COULD SAVE THE DAY hen you get an inkling something is wrong, or there is something missing from the picture, step back for a moment and reassess the situation. Think logically, decide what else you need to know, and then come back with a test that will give you your answer. The vehicle in question is a 2006 Nissan Xterra equipped with a VQ40DE 4.0-litre engine, manual transmission and rear wheel drive (Figure 1). It was towed into the workshop having stalled while driving and now exhibits a “crank/nostart” condition. Apparently no warning lights lit up on the dash before this problem occurred. Relatively quickly the technician diagnosed that the timing chain had jumped teeth. A timing chain replacement was approved by the customer and the timing cover was removed. The technician’s diagnosis was correct, because none of the plastic from the timing chain guides was existent. The lack of tension allowed the timing chain to jump teeth. The technician completed the repair but now the vehicle exhibited new symptoms. First, the vehicle intermittently “runs poorly.” Second, the MIL is illuminated and the ECM has stored two DTCs: P0011 – “INT/V TIM CONT-B1” and P0021 – “INT/V TIM CONT-B2.” This called for a second investigation with a scan tool. The DTCs previously mentioned were present and that they were the only codes stored

W

Auto Channel Issue #40 October 2021

in the ECM. Next, we looked at live data with the engine running. The camshaft data PIDs suggested that both camshafts were retarded 15 crankshaft degrees while both VVT solenoids had command of zero percent, which suggested the timing chain had been installed incorrectly but that would be unusual for a skilled technician and the technician swore the timing marks were lined up correctly. Time to move on with more testing. The first scope test was a relative compression test which should reveal a problem with the general ignition timing. In the capture (Figure 2) you can see that the ignition trigger signal (gold) occurs just before the top dead center of the relative compression (purple) trace and does not appear to be an issue. (Note: this ignition timing test is only a ballpark measurement.) The next test to be performed is a CKP/CMP sensor correlation. If we are to compare CKP and CMP sensor signal synchronization we will need a known good example. Luckily we had a known good capture from a low mileage 2005 VQ40DE. (Figure 3). Using the known good capture, I found a place to compare all three signals easily. I made the same connections to the broken vehicle, obtained the capture, and proceeded with the analysis (Figure 4). I performed some measurements and confirmed that both CMP sensor signals were retarded approximately 17 degrees in relation to the CKP

sensor signal. In this test, the 15 degrees of camshaft retard reported by the scan tool, and what appears to be normal ignition timing, is still suggesting improper timing chain installation but it is worth checking before removing the timing cover again. Luckily, when I took my known-good capture, of the low-mileage 2005 car, I had installed a pressure transducer in one of the cylinders. First, I wanted to know a more accurate ignition timing measurement. The ignition timing from the known-good capture measured 13 degrees advanced (Figure 5). On the defective vehicle the measurement came out to be 39 degrees advanced (Figure 6). This was odd as usually when ignition timing is off on a modern vehicle it is retarded. Either way, a closer look at the CKP is warranted. Second, I wanted to know how the CKP sensor signal lined up with top dead centre. Using the same captures, with a little different zoom, I made this comparison. The known good capture shows the top dead center lining up with the rising edge of the last CKP pulse before a large gap (Figure 7). In the bad capture, the CKP sensor signal has moved to the left, indicating that it is advanced (Figure 8). This suggests the timing chain is not the issue, but is there another test we can perform to definitively take incorrect timing chain installation off the table? Using the same captures already obtained we

can make another comparison: verification of camshaft timing by observing valve events in the in-cylinder capture. Since this vehicle is of a single overhead camshaft design, I opted to measure the timing of the opening of the exhaust valve since it is relatively easy to pick out. On the known good capture, the exhaust valve opening (or “EVO”) is occurring) at approximately 36 degrees before bottom dead center (Figure 9). On the broken vehicle EVO is occurring at approximately 38 degrees BBDC (Figure 10). I am not going to sweat two degrees and am now totally confident that the timing chain installation is not the issue. Now it is time to investigate the CKP sensor reluctor.

tool, were all off by 15 to 17 degrees. The flywheel was indeed installed three bolt holes off. Since the CKP reluctor was technically off only 15 degrees, the vehicle still started. If another indexing had been chosen, the vehicle probably would have been a crank-no-start. The shop removed the transmission, installed the flywheel correctly, and reassembled the vehicle. The issue was resolved, no DTCs returned, and the vehicle ran fine. A later conversation with the customer revealed that a clutch had been replaced about a year ago while living in a different state. This is when the time problem originated. However, the customer was still adamant there was no MIL illumination up until the point that the engine stalled. This raises two questions: • Why was there no DTC P0011 or P0021 current before the timing chain gave up the ghost? • Is the customer lying to us?

particular issue would have been very hard, or at least time-consuming, to find if we did not have the known good data to compare the broken vehicle against. The non-intrusive testing did not take very long. When opportunities present themselves that allow you to obtain known good data, take the time to get it. Save the data in an organised fashion so it is available next time you need it. Besides, getting that data gives you practice with the tooling, makes you faster the next time you have to perform the testing, and makes you a better technician in the long run.

FOLLOWING THE CLUES The CKP sensor on this vehicle is located at the back of the engine and its reluctor is on the flywheel. Unfortunately the transmission is going to have to come out to confirm what is going on with the reluctor. Upon removal, it is noted that there is a locating pin on the rear of the crankshaft (Figure 11). This locating pin’s purpose is to facilitate correct flywheel alignment. However, the forward face of the flywheel has five possible locations for the locating pin to fit into (Figure 12). This means that the flywheel can be installed randomly in five possible positions, only one would be correct. This also means that there is a 20 percent chance of being correct if we were to just slap the flywheel into place. So now we get to do some math. If the flywheel were to be rotated one bolt hole it would have moved 45 degrees (360 divided by 8 = 45.) If the flywheel were to be installed three bolt holes off (3 multiplied by 45), the large window in the CKP sensor signal will be changed by 135 degrees. If we think about it, 120 degrees off would work, but that is not where we are. 135 degrees minus 120 degrees = 15 degrees. Almost all of our scope measurements, and the data PIDs in the scan

LOGIC RESOLVES THE MYSTERY With a little research into the code set criteria for the P0011 and P0021, I think we can theorise why the customer was probably telling the truth. According to Nissan, there is about a 10-degree window of error before these DTCs will set. This would be the code set threshold. When timing chains stretch, the camshafts retard. If the Xterra was advanced 15 degrees due to the incorrect flywheel installation, the timing chain would only have to be stretched enough to cause a little over 5 degrees of camshaft retard to bring it back into the acceptable range and not set the DTCs. The vehicle was tested again after the repair and the scan confirmed that the camshaft timing PIDs had returned to zero degrees. The DSO captures also matched the known-good captures exactly. This case study also reinforces the value of having, or obtaining, known good captures. This

AA Motoring seeks new workshop partners A TREND TOWARDS TRUSTED BRANDS IS PROMPTING AA MOTORING TO SEEK PARTNERS AND EXPAND ITS AA AUTO CENTRE NETWORK Motoring is looking for high-quality workshops to become part of the AA Auto Centre or AA Approved Repairer network, for their mutual benefit. Challenging times present opportunities and AA Motoring business development manager Jason O’Connell says AA has noticed a trend for both the New Zealand public and business partners to migrate towards well-known and trusted brands. He cites the continued growth of AA membership, which is now well over 1.8 million, and AA Smartfuel, which has over 2.9 million customers nationwide. To capitalise on this opportunity, Jason says AA Auto Centre wants to add additional workshops and business partners in high growth areas right throughout the country. AA Motoring is in the midst of a transformation, with a new leadership team, new strategic direction, and a renewed focus on growth that is delivering results for its AA Auto Centres and AA Approved Repairers. The performance of AA Motoring’s AA Auto Centre service and repair operation continues to outstrip previous years, and the AA Auto Centre is experiencing strong franchise

Get expert help with ABS from Safe R Brakes SAFE R BRAKES AIMS TO HELP TURN AROUND OUR THROWAWAY SOCIETY, ONE ABS UNIT AT A TIME afe R Brakes’ owner John Begg encourages Kiwi workshops to avoid waste and stop sending money overseas for replacement parts when most brake components can be fully reconditioned in New Zealand. “I just shake my head when I see repairable ABS units thrown away,” says John. “All those earth resources going to the tip when they don’t really need to. Not to mention the cost to the country in unnecessarily importing replacement parts. We all need to step up and do what we can to reduce our environmental footprint.” John says the company’s hydraulic, ABS, and bonding teams are experienced in tearing down all sorts of components and rebuilding them. They have put a lot of resources into their ABS system capabilities. “If you think your system is in need of maintenance, it’s probably best to get in contact with us or your local brake specialist. There is quite a bit of specialised equipment and know-how involved in the maintenance and reconditioning of these units that most people do

S

not have lying around, so when it comes to ABS, definitely go to the experts. “Also, due to their complexity, troubleshooting ABS problems is somewhat of an art form, so you don’t want to just pull the pump out right away. They are integrated systems that have sensors, wires, computers, and hydraulic components that interact with other vehicle systems. Initial diagnosis is essential and is done while the ABS is still in the vehicle. Usually, after a quick conversation, we can point you in the right direction, and many customers will courier units to us for repair if they are not local.” John says soft or sinking pedals can be caused by issues inside the ABS modules. ABS units in poor condition can also cause multiple other issues that Safe R Brakes has developed ways to fix. Not everything can be fixed but the scope is expanding all the time. “We specialise in diagnosing and rebuilding these complex hydraulic/electronic units, and we have a dedicated department just for that.”

John says most hydraulic components can be rebuilt back to the original manufacturer’s specification. “We prefer to rebuild everything we can, because a lot of the time replacement parts are definitely not the same quality as the parts from the vehicle manufacturer. Tolerances and fit are just not there.” He says reconditioning is usually cheaper, although some new replacement parts are so cheap that rebuilding is uneconomic. “Where this is the case, we give customers the choice. Of course, on older vehicles, replacement parts are sometimes not available, so rebuilding is the only option. “It is so much kinder on the environment to recondition a part, and reuse it, than throw it in the bin and install a new one.” For more information, call 0800 SAFE R BRAKES, or check out their site, saferbrakes.co.nz.

Where it all started THE HISTORY OF FORD’S ICONIC FLATHEAD ENGINE ord’s flathead V8 is the forefather of the entire American V8 scene, its bang-for-buck performance unlike anything the world had seen at that time. It was introduced in 1932 and designed for production by Carl Schmaltz, Ray Lard, and Mil Zoerlein. The design was simple, with poured Babbit-style main bearings, 21-head studs, one belt for the generator and fan, and two water pumps. The pioneering flathead V8s did have their flaws though. Attitude Problem THE IDEA WAS TO BUILD SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT AND TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX — THE REBIRTH OF THE MUSTANG PROVIDED A PERFECT PLATFORM FOR JASON AND HIS TEAM TO HAVE A BIT OF A PLAY WITH WORDS: SHANE WISHNOWSKY  PHOTOS: GLEN MCNAMARA ason Hansen’s philosophy at his company, Autocolour Matrix, is to think outside the box and build stuff a little differently. When it was announced that the Mustang was to be sold brand new in New Zealand, with the steering wheel on the correct side of the car for our roads, Jason’s mind started wandering. There was no doubt that the marque was popular worldwide, but he likened them to a “packet of jelly beans: there were heaps of them, but they all looked exactly the same, apart from the colour.” His company is a bit lucky when it came to building cars. Its specialty is building one-off fullcustom vehicles, therefore his team possessed the necessary skills and equipment to transform the humble pony car into something a bit more ‘yeah’ and a lot less ‘nah’. They had just finished piecing together a latemodel Mazda RX-7 and attached a Rocket Bunny kit to the exterior of the Japanese coupe. Jason was pretty impressed with the quality and fit of the bodykit, and he just loved the tough look achieved. He approached good friend Dean Hewetson, who he’s built a couple of cars for in the past. Dean had overseas connections, and one of his friends just happened to know Cory from another Japanese bodykit powerhouse: Liberty Walk’s US branch. This is a company known for its radical reworkings of modern high-end cars, so who better to approach?

Auto Channel Issue #40 October 2021

With a foot in the door and things starting to look a bit more positive, maybe he could pull this idea off. It wasn’t all plain sailing though. The vision Jason had in his head was clear, tough, aggressive, and race-car-for-the-street inspired. Surprisingly, however, the boffins in the States needed a fair bit of convincing that it actually was a good idea. Three solid months of conversation backwards and forwards finally netted Jason the answer he wanted. The big thing that helped seal the deal was the fact that the Mustang name and popularity in New Zealand was massive. There was also a distinct lack of anything to change the look of the car, aside from paint colours and a few cosmetic trinkets. Jason and the team decided to base the kit on the RX-7 one they’d just finished applying to Dean’s car. Jason really liked the open-wheel look to show

off the fat rear tyres. He didn’t want to hide the aggressive camber up at the pointy end either, so that style kit would be perfect. Now all he needed was a car. In October 2017, John Andrew Ford in Auckland sourced a suitable donor car. With a three-month wait for anything not already in the country, options were a bit limited and it was a get-what-you’regiven kind of scenario. But Jason looks back now and admits that the white Mustang he was given couldn’t have been more perfect, as the white gives the impression that things are much bigger than they are, as he explains: “When you’re doing a widebody kit that is 10 inches wider than factory, then big is good!” Once the custom kit arrived on our shores, Jason approached Fraser Cars with his idea, and together they worked through the fitting and modification process so that the finished product would be perfect; fitted correctly; and, most important for all, would be 100-per-cent legal. Once that phase was complete, the brandnew car was rolled into the workshop, ready to be

transformed. It takes some serious intent to attack a car with only 15km on the clock with an angle grinder. Wanting wheels of Nascar proportions, Jason approached Craig from Mag & Turbo on the North Shore. He handed over the specs that he wanted and ended up with a set of BC Forged wheels measuring a rather impressive 20x10 inches on the front and 20x12 inches on the rear. Wrapping these seriously dished monsters are a set of Lexani meats, 245/35R20 up front and 325/25R20 at back — the open-style fender extensions would be perfect to show off these bad boys. To help give the car a bit more tunability in the handling department, a D2 platform adjustable suspension and camber kit was grafted in place of the stock suspension. This gives the rapidly transforming Mustang the handling of a circuit car, not to mention the necessary adjustment tools to help it perform flawlessly on whatever road surface the driver encounters. The Mustang was already blessed with some serious stoppers on all four corners when it left the factory, so the guys decided to leave things alone there. It was time for

Jason to address the elephant in the room. The Liberty Walk kit didn’t come with a bonnet. A quick phone call to Mike Shaw in Hamilton saw the pair sat down, armed with a piece of paper and a pencil, and out came a drawing based on the Falcon Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) bonnet hump. Problem solved. The calendar showed that 2017 was rapidly coming to an end, and Jason was getting impatient. Everyone had broken up for Christmas, but he wanted the car worked on solidly during the break to paint the kit, fit it up to the car, and finish off some minor details here and there. The long hours were beginning to pay off, and they pretty much had a finished-looking car, apart from a few bits and pieces. But there was something just not right. From the outside, the car was looking like everything Jason had ever wanted. It was most definitely in your face and looked fast standing still. But looks ain’t everything. Sam from CTB performance was approached and the pair decided to hit the Mustang with the biggest horsepower hammer they could find. They grabbed a catalogue from the tuning house of Roush and ticked the boxes marked: ‘all the horsepower and guaranteed to melt tyres — stage 3 goodness’. The 32-valve 305ci engine that once produced 435hp out of the box now makes 675hp of noise and aggression. Jason said the stage-three option was a bit of a no-

30

brainer and came with some great features: larger axles to help contain all the extra power, a modified intake, performance chip, and a stainless full exhaust system that unleashes a glorious raucous bark when the loud pedal gets stomped on. Jason then sat down with his mate Paul Black from Visign. Together, they nutted out the stripe and decal package that adorns the exterior and came up with the ‘Brat Pack’ idea. To Jason, the car looked like it was “up to no good, a bit of a menace, and a bit of a brat”. He also thought that, at a stretch, ‘brat’ could stand for ‘bad racing attitude’. “I always wanted a race car on the street, legal, that could be driven to work every day,” he says. Three-and-a-half years on, and he’s had no problems, “apart from it being a touch low at times.” Final words from Jason: “It’s awesome because it’s a combination of generations of car builders, old and young people coming together, which was my

plan. The whole idea of the Mustang was that we could put this weapon together for the public in six weeks from order (depending on car availability), legal, and in the colour you wanted, for less than anything out of America; with performance, horsepower, and handling to burn, and still be under the standard Ford warranty. “Unfortunately, Matrix got so busy with our Blackout Business of de-chroming new vehicles that our marketing lacked the punch, and Shelby walked into Ford New Zealand’s life and we got pushed to the side. The good thing is we still have the car to prove that we were the first to do a latemodel, widebody Mustang – and we could still build many more of our monsters easily today. A massive thank you to my mate Dean Hewetson for pestering Liberty Walk, which made this all possible, and, most of all, my beautiful wife, Rebecca, for believing in me.”

Protrans pads for heavy vehicles BENDIX LAUNCHES PROTRANS HEAVY-DUTY PADS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Auto Channel is the best way to reach the wider automotive industry. The publication is direct mailed to 11,306 New Zealand businesses in the following automotive sectors: Automotive workshops Parts importers and distributors Transmission specialists Automotive recyclers Towing operators Panel beaters and painters Crash repairers Tyre dealers Suspension and underbody repairers Steering specialists

eading Australian brake manufacturer Bendix has released its latest development in high- performance brake pads for heavy-duty applications on commercial vehicles. Bendix Protrans HD Brake Pads are designed and engineered to combat the extreme pressures that heavy-duty vehicles — such as cement agitators, refuse compactors, major rigs, and city buses — are exposed to on a daily basis. The Protrans HD features a heavy-duty formulation designed to cope with the high temperatures generated by constant braking and GMV loading, which requires a higher performance brake pad. This addresses what can be a major issue in fleets — the wear rate of multi-purpose pads. Premium quality friction materials are essential, with electronics controlling many aspects of the modern heavy vehicle such as engine, transmission, and brakes. The range meets ECE Regulation 90 (ECE-R90) regulations (where homologated), and is FE rated (J661). The ECE-R90 specifies the design, construction, performance requirements, and test protocols to strict European regulation. ECE R90 calls for brake pads to be tested for braking capabilities, speed sensitivity, cold performance, and may only deviate from the

L

38

frictional characteristics of their original equipment counterparts by no more than 15 percent. The comprehensive new Protrans HD range from Bendix covers the most popular heavy commercial vehicle applications, and is now available from leading Bendix stockists offering OE quality, low pad wear, and comes with hardware included in the pack ready to fit. For more information, free call the Bendix Brake Advice Centre on +61 3 5327 0211, email brakeadvicecentre@bendix.com.au, or see www.bendix.com.au.
