his month we’ve got a story on changes to the NZ Transport Agency’s Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual (VIRM). The regulation change will affect a growing part of the local aftermarket retail business, as well as the compliance process; aftermarket LED bulbs have been deemed a no-no (with a handful of exceptions). But the new regulation — which states that passenger vehicles must run the same lights they were fitted with at the factory — was implemented without any consultation with LED bulb manufacturers or retailers. Elsewhere, the Collision Repair Association is also reacting to incoming changes to its part of the motor trade, championing the new internationally recognized I-CAR standards. While EVs are touted as having a reduced need for mechanical servicing, when it comes to collision repairs, there is a significant increase in the risk and repair complexity to get them back on the road. The CRA sees the I-CAR standards as a tangible way of reassuring the public that their panelbeater has undergone training and auditing for repair work to vehicles with advanced electrical systems, hybrid drivetrains and high-tech safety systems onboard. One thing’s for sure: the industry is continually evolving. Possibly faster now than it has in decades. As Larry Fallowfield from Hamilton’s Auto Body Equipment told me when I interviewed for a profile story in this month’s issue; “You have to keep your eye on the future… in order to keep up with developments in vehicle manufacturing. If you take your eye off the ball, you could get left behind.” As always, we’re keen for feedback on the magazine. Peter says that, under his own trialing of retrofitted LED headlight bulbs, his eyes have adjusted to the white light. He says that when cars are coming towards him with white light bulbs he doesn’t find it distracting. Peter says he feels it makes driving safer, which is the main aim. “We have seen instances in the industry in the past where reasons for rejection have been changed wholesale, but then changed back over time as the impracticalities of the wording become obvious,” he says. Tim Paterson says that Narva LED headlamp globes are safer than conventional bulbs, help eliminate driver fatigue when driving at night and last much longer,

necessitating less replacements over the life of the average motor vehicle. “We firmly believe the better you see, the safer you are,” says Tim. The change to the VIRM means that retrofitted replacement LED globes don’t conform to regulations, meaning any vehicle tested with these will fail its Warrant of Fitness inspection, even if it passes on a beam setter. Tim says the new ruling doesn’t affect LED light bars — a popular addition for many ute and off-road vehicle owners — but suggests there might eventually be VIRM changes specific to those products also. “We’re not the only ones making or selling LED bulbs, but we certainly feel our products are safe and conform to sensible standards.”

“The issue previously was that regulations dated back to a time before the advent of LED technology, so you have references to a ‘filament’, for example, in the standard. Therefore, there has not been a standard to adhere to for LED replacement headlamp globes.” Until now, common sense prevailed in this grey area and the market stance around LED headlamp globes was simple — follow the same test procedure as a halogen globe. Any halogen globe must conform to in-test standards which are measured on a beam-setter; the way the likes of Vehicle Testing New Zealand (VTNZ) and other vehicle inspection agencies test all headlights. The test ensures that vehicle headlights have the required ‘cut off’ and don’t dazzle oncoming traffic, as well as the required output within a specified range. “Narva has its own light laboratory and light tunnel in Melbourne which we use to engineer our products. We extensively test to ensure our LED lights meet accepted ‘cut-off’ and output. There are definitely globes out there that don’t meet these standards, but we have worked hard to ensure ours do,” says Tim. Peter Stephenson, from Auto Electrical & Mechanical Services Dunedin, says that he has tested LED bulbs sourced from China and has found through his own trial program that only one style of bulb conformed to standard. He says that, in his experience, R1 or S1 series LEDs have a similar cut-off pattern to original halogen bulbs and they are sold as such. “They are not the brightest LED bulbs that are sold, but they are the only ones I would have fitted prior to the regulation wording change which came into effect on June 1,” he says. “It’s not just a matter of figuring out what does work and what doesn’t from a product point of view, however. “Halogen bulbs are available with ‘plus’ brightness for anyone to fit, and also I find the brightness of flashing bicycle headlights more distracting than anything else on the road and we also need to share the road with bicycles.” “Headlight bulbs that are too bright a lighting source is given as a reason for rejection; but how bright is too bright? “Back in the 1980s, incandescent headlight bulbs were changed to halogen bulbs, which gave the

otor-vehicle and parts retailing have fallen for a third consecutive quarter, down 1.1% ($38 million). This period of lower vehicle and parts sales values follows a period of growth over the earlier six quarters. According to Department of Statistics data, wholesale sales values for motor vehicles and parts, including cars and trucks, fell 2.1% ($58 million) in the March 2018 quarter, after a 6.4% rise in the December 2017 quarter. Although sales fell for motor vehicles and parts wholesaling, their stocks continued to rise. At 31 March 2018, the actual value of wholesale stocks of motor vehicles and parts was $2.2 billion, up $360 million (19%) when compared with 31 March 2017. Bucking the overall trend were electric vehicles.

Predominantly Auckland-skewed geographically, EV registrations for the March quarter totalled 1409 vehicles. Total registrations for the full 2017 year amounted to 3682 vehicles. Also of note is Department of Statistics data which shows pure electric vehicles are more popular than plug-in hybrid vehicles. Higher fuel sales contributed to a total retail value increase of 0.2% ($58 million). Fuel retailing had the largest increase for the March quarter, up 3.4% ($70 million), which is the second consecutive increase in fuel, following the 4.3% ($84 million) rise in the December 2017 quarter. Supermarket and grocery stores recorded a 0.9% ($45 million) increase in the March 2018 quarter, after a 1.4% ($69 million) rise in the December 2017 quarter.

ore and more vehicle manufacturers are using branched hoses for their coolant and heater hose applications. Branched hoses differ from regular hoses as they contain quick-connects, sensors, restrictors, valves, and other components as required built into the hose to control the coolant flow. Many modern cooling systems now also operate at 50psi constant pressure, with spikes of between 70 and 80psi. Standard clamps over a barb cannot hold this pressure; instead, quick-connects with an overmould clamp are required. Branched hoses are exposed to harsh under bonnet temperatures and multiple heat cycles and can become brittle over time, developing cracks leading to coolant loss. s the days get shorter and temperatures start to drop, a battery goes through changes that can affect the starting performance of a vehicle. These cold conditions increase friction around the engine components and an increase in oil viscosity creates higher demands on the engine that requires additional cranking power to start the vehicle. To add more stress to the situation, a fully charged battery at 25 degrees centigrade has approximately 100% of its power to crank the engine. At 0⁰C the battery’s ability to deliver the same amount of power is reduced by around 35%. The combination of the vehicle’s operating conditions, an increase in engine tolerances and a decrease in available CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) is a big factor behind an increase in battery failures over June, July, and August. Research has proven the correlation between the number of batteries tested and the number sold. This is particularly pertinent when we consider that

Proactive battery testing is essential in helping to secure extra sale through pre-emptive battery replacement. Battery testing using a hand-held tester provides an accurate on-the-spot test result in minutes. Techspan makes welding plastics straightforward TECHSPAN’S RECENTLY REDESIGNED WEBSITE INCLUDES DETAILED ‘HOW TO’ GUIDES FOR WELDING PLASTICS.

lastic Welding Tools, a division of Techspan Group, has recently expanded the customer-focused aspects of its website to include instructional information, alongside its comprehensive e-commerce offering. “We’re well known as a market-leader when it comes to the supply of high-tech industrial plastic welding tools and consumables. But another part of our service to customers is advice on the best methods for using our equipment,” says Techspan marketing manager, Tim Fastnedge. “Through our distribution warehouses on both sides of the Tasman, we are able to get plastic welding equipment to our customers very quickly. But it’s important for us to support them beyond that initial purchase, too, with information about how that equipment is best utilized.” The plastic welding process starts with plastics identification, as only like-for-like materials can be successfully welded. For example, Polypropylene (as used in most car bumpers) can only be welded with a Polypropylene welding rod. So, it’s very important to first identify the material to be welded. “Most plastics used in the manufacture of modern

vehicles are stamped with plastics identification codes; however, where this identification is not present, we recommend customers use a Techspan Rod Test Kit (RTK) to identify the plastic,” says Tim. The website gives customers further details on how to use the RTK. Once the plastic has been identified, as with any welding process, cleaning of the components prior to completing the weld is important, says Tim. “Poorly prepared plastic components will lead to weld failures. Plastics surface preparation involves ensuring all soils are removed, along with any paints, oils, greases, and even notable UV degradation needs to be removed prior to welding. “With large parts, like bumpers, washing the part is usually a good start. This will ensure the removal of any atmospheric soils, such as mud or road grime. We recommend that industrial detergents aren’t used, though, as these can also introduce film coatings that may affect the welding results.” Another important part of the plastics welding process is applying a ‘V’ groove to the weld area. This is done using a Rotary Burr, although Tim cautions that plastics yield easily to abrasives, so care has to be taken in

After the V groove has been established, a tacking nozzle needs to be used to close joint interfaces and alignment of the broken parts. “Unlike metal welding, where tacking is carried out at the ends of the welding area, plastic welding requires tacking be carried out wherever you intend to place welding rod,” says Tim. The Techspan website also details welding techniques for different scenarios, such as pendulum welding, which can be used effectively for short weld runs or where access is difficult, or speed welding for longer runs. “Where different techniques are concerned, we also like to provide accurate advice on which type of nozzle to use, whether it be a standard nozzle or specialised triangular speed nozzles to suit the corresponding welding rod profile,” says Tim. “More than the techniques themselves, we want our customers to feel comfortable utilizing our equipment, so that they get the best out of it. hen you’re discussing modified specs in New Zealand, there’s one supplier that appears as something of a surefooted through-line for some of the biggest hitters on the circuit. Sometimes you’d be forgiven for thinking absolutely everyone is running camshafts, valves, springs, porting specialities, and other valvetrain-related products supplied by Kelford Cams. There must be a reason it seems that way. After all, you can’t be in business for half a century and not be doing something right… Kiel Rasmussen from Kelford Cams tells us the business began back in 1968, when Norm Kelly and Ron Rutherford (Kel-ford – geddit?) started out by regrinding and modifying cams for local hot rodders. “Over the years the cam grinding side grew, as did the library of parts that were imported and sold,” explains Kiel. “The company continued to evolve through the 1970s, ‘80s, and ‘90s until in early 2006, Kelford Cams bought and installed the Southern Hemisphere’s first masterless CNC cam grinder, which allowed the company to grow into the international operation it is today.” That growth has continued, as has the company’s investment in new technology. A new state-of-the-art camshaft grinder has recently been delivered. “This will allow us to not only keep up with demand, but also develop and release new engine platforms and tackle new technical challenges, like direct injection and inverted radius lobe designs,” says

Kiel. Despite the reputation, Kiel says word-of-mouth is still very important. “It starts with someone going fast in their respective class. Then one of his or her competitors contacts us to go faster, and the whole thing snowballs. “Because of our quality and accuracy we’ve been the supplier of many different control-class cams across a few different motor-sport disciplines in New Zealand. On a global scale, our cams’ performance has lead us to being on more podiums in more forms of motor sport than we can keep track of. “This has seen us take on making proprietary camshafts for some of the biggest performance companies in the world, some we can name, some we can’t — it’s really hard when you want to tell everyone that your cams have broken a world record, but you aren’t allowed to!” he laughs. In addition to their world-famous cams, Kelford also offers a number of other components and services to its many clients. “Everything we do is based on decades of engine development experience, and we have very specific numbers we work to for each application. “We’ll take a particular engine’s application and tailor a package to suit — everything from cam specs to spring package, valve size to valve materials. We mix realworld results with some proprietary software that we’ve developed to create cam specs and valve train set-ups that meet the needs of the customer.” Kiel says that the expert team goes beyond simply

picking the duration and lift of the cams and grinding them. f you’re thinking this Porsche 911 reminds you of something else, you’re not wrong. Unveiled to celebrate the German performance marque’s 70th anniversary, the clue is in the name. Dubbed the Porsche 911 Speedster, the styling of this drop-top takes many of its cues from the car that started it all; the 356 Speedster from 1948. Naturally, the concept car is crafted using all the modern materials and components any contemporary Porsche would be built from. But look more closely and there are plenty of nods to the perennial porker’s great-great-grandfather. The wide body has been donated from a 911 Carrera 4, but features a chopped roof and a lower, shallower windscreen which apes the original car’s silhouette. The ‘double bubble’ hump at the rear is crafted from carbon fibre and covers the roll over protection. The front wings and bonnet are finished in carbon fibre, too.

While underneath all the sheet metal lies the same 4.0-litre flat-six as found in the 911 GT3, there are plenty of other retro accents, such as the chrome fuel filler cap mounted in the centre of the bonnet, bullet-style wing mirrors and 21” centre-locking alloys which mimic the classic look of the original car’s Fuchs. The Porsche 911 Speedster’s nods to the past continue with a distinct lack of mod cons inside the cabin; no air con and no infotainment system. There’s no folding roof either; a small tonneau cover is your lot. And forget about leather-trimmed sports seats; a couple of carbon-fibre-backed buckets are all you get… to save on weight, naturally. There’s no word yet on whether Porsche intends to offer the Speedster concept to customers. But as we’re over half way through their 70th anniversary year as it is, they’d better get a wriggle on if they want to open up the accounts to deposits.

Partmaster to offer EV charging points at all stores THE MOVE TO INSTALL EV FAST-CHARGING STATIONS IS PART OF A NEW SUSTAINABLE DIRECTION FOR THE NEW ZEALAND-OWNED COMPANY.

s part of a nationwide company rebrand, Partmaster is moving the company direction to be more sustainable. This includes supplying free EV charging stations at all Partmaster stores. The Taupo and Manukau City branches already have fast-charging infrastructure available for public use. The next store to receive the EV-orientated rollout will be Partmaster Palmerston North. The electric vehicle market is growing rapidly in New Zealand, with latest figures from NZTA showing the figure to be 8184 in May; that’s a 224% increase since this time last year. The numbers are set to more than double in 2019. Finding an EV charging station in New Zealand is also easy through the PlugShare app, which is free to download. Partmaster already has its stations listed with PlugShare, which currently includes over 50,000 charging station listings worldwide. The automotive parts business will change rapidly in the next five years, and Partmaster says it is gearing up for this. The next move will be to implement electric vehicles as part of its company fleet.

The key difference for the 2000B from its precursor is the number of batteries it is now capable of monitoring, increasing from four to 16. The RF Battery Monitor allows the user to monitor the voltage of up to 16 remote batteries and displays its status via a single remote colour screen. It is multi-voltage compatible (12/24V) and it works with all types of batteries, meaning that monitoring contrasting battery types and voltages is not an issue. Batteries can also be given individual names that are relevant to their application for ease of use and management. Easy to install and operate, the RF Battery Monitor requires no wiring on the vehicle, with installation as simple as plugging the screen into a vehicle’s

standard cigarette lighter socket, or other power supplies applicable to desk-top or bench-top management. As for the monitoring of the batteries, it is as simple as connecting a transmitter to the battery positive and negative terminals and then pairing with the remote receiver display. The user can also set a customizable threshold for the batteries’ voltage, signalling the unit and putting it into an alarm status if the battery reaches the designated level. In alarm status mode the battery icon changes colour and the battery name will flash. Additionally, the screen will also alternate colour to signal that a battery has gone into deficit. It will also give out an audible warning, with five pulses (beeps) sounding before going silent again. One of the key improvements to this product has been the change from Bluetooth to an RF technology protocol, which has allowed the unit to improve its reliability whilst ultimately improving signal strength over longer distances (up to 100 meters).

lex Polaschek is new to the automotive parts and servicing industry but brings with him a strong focus on customer service. With Partmaster’s national retail network having undergone a recent transformation, with a change in both the look and feel of its stores, and in its distributor strategy, Alex is heading up a company at the beginning of an entirely new era. Auto Channel: What aspects of the automotive servicing industry appealed to you prior to taking on this new role? Was there crossover with the industry you were previously engaged with? Alex Polaschek: “For the trade industry — which Partmaster predominately deals with — cars are a real passion. That makes the people we serve and partner with really engaged and great to deal with. “Although my previous experience is predominantly in the energy sector, the three most important requirements for success are still the same; customer service, customer service, and customer service!” What attributes did you see in Partmaster as a brand that attracted you to the company? “I identify Partmaster as a ‘challenger’ brand in a market where there are two very large corporate players. The industry needs us to keep the big guys honest on price, as well as on service, and I think Partmaster plays that role conclusively.” With the more sustainable direction the company is visibly taking, will that mandate filter down

to the types of components and partner brands Partmaster will work with in the future? “Absolutely. Mixtec batteries and Woking brakes are great examples of this in action. Those companies both produce industry-leading products which also have considerably lower environmental impacts than their competitors, while still being pricecompetitive. “We are now asking all our suppliers to reduce their environmental footprint too, whether it be in their packaging or throughout their manufacturing process.” How will the rise in EV ownership alter the types of components Partmaster stocks? Will this change quickly, or do you think the change will actually be more gradual than many are anticipating? “Electric vehicles are great and are definitely showing strong growth. However, that is off a very low base. For us, the internal combustion-engined car (and its required aftermarket parts) will be here and our primary focus for many years yet.” Will Partmaster be looking to extend its network of retail stores in the coming couple of years? “Partmaster is definitely committed to extending its geographic reach to be able to access more customers throughout New Zealand. We certainly hope to offer our personalized service to a broader audience in the future.” What do you think are the main challenges independent auto servicing companies are facing at the moment?

“Learning the new EV technology is a huge task. I believe that the industry will need to fully re-train within the next 5-10 years.” When it comes to the tools and equipment side of Partmaster’s inventory, are there any technological advances that have really impressed you? “Yes, I got to see the latest electronic hoist in action at an Auckland workshop last week. Although it costs twice as much as a standard hoist, it takes up minimal space and the technology inherent in it was very impressive.” Will online sales play a bigger part in day-today business for Partmaster in the years ahead, or do you find the trade still likes the ‘bricks and mortar’ storefront for purchasing gear and consumables? “Partmaster’s online sales have increased strongly every month and we have a clear target for what percentage of our sales we think can be achieved through our online sales channel. “There will always be a need for ‘bricks and mortar’ storefront though. Mechanics rely on us to find the right part and come in daily with their broken components. “The Partmaster tribe are very resourceful, and as well as sourcing replacements we sometimes have to fabricate them. So, this element of the Partmaster service would be much more difficult to replicate online. There will be physical Partmaster stores throughout New Zealand for a long time yet.”

echnology has rapidly evolved since Hamilton-headquartered Auto Body Equipment (ABE) was first established in the mid 1990s. Over the last 25 years, vehicles and the materials manufacturers use to produce them have become much more complex. It follows that the equipment required to service them has done likewise. So, while the workshop equipment ABE distributes throughout New Zealand has certainly changed, premium quality gear and back-up service remains a distinct through-line for this family-owned company. ABE continues to distribute a large variety of workshop equipment options to customers across the length and breadth of the country. In addition to large-scale capital equipment like spraybooths, and preparation and mixing rooms, ABE also provides its customers with a direct line to some of the best solvent recycling systems, chassis alignment equipment, jacks and hoists, paint and preparation consumables, protective equipment, and workshop furniture available. We want to be a step ahead of the general market,” he says. One area of rapid growth ABE has experienced of late is in providing training support. With aspects of the company’s product line, such as paint and spraybooth technology and welding,

riveting, and dent-reduction equipment, becoming ever more complex, comprehensive training has become central to ABE’s customer support offering. “Hands-on training is always going to be crucial,” says Larry. “Theoretical components are always part of the process, but in order to ensure we can provide adequate training support to customers, we have made sure to develop a special training area in our recently redeveloped workshop. “The paint companies are generally very good at training technicians on their products, but we identified a gap in the market around collision training. “Directors Shane and Kylie Harvey invested around $2.5m in the new workshop, ensuring a ground-up designed training facility was part of the complex. It’s a nice, bright, clean area, without pillars interrupting the space and ideal for a hands-on approach.” ABE is the approved training provider for European Motor Distributors (distributors of brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, and Skoda), as well as a firm supporter of I-Car training and a member of the Collision Repair Association. Larry says that having staff attend trade shows, such as Automechanika in Germany, is also an integral part of providing an experienced service. “Internal training is something we’re very big on, and ensuring our team are up to speed with what’s going on in the industry — what the latest innovations or trends are and how we might see them implemented here — is very important to us as a business. “You have to keep your eye on the future; the equipment we distribute is always advancing and evolving in nature, in order to keep up with developments in vehicle manufacturing. If you take your eye off the ball, you could get left behind.” As a part of ABE’s distributor relationship, Larry and

his team are in constant contact with the brands they represent in New Zealand at a factory level. Most training is done via webinars direct from the factory, or technicians will sometimes fly from Europe to ABE to train their staff in-house. “We have a great relationship with the companies we distribute for. In most cases these relationships have been cemented over a long period of time, so we like to think that provides our customers with peace-ofmind as end-users. “We certainly do our best to ensure all of our staff provide that peace-of-mind, whichever part of the business they are working in.” Visit abe.co.nz for more information.

axworthy European has been providing Cantabrians with collision repair and paint services for 45 years. With the second generation of Raxworthys now heading the business — in the form of brothers Craig and Todd — established relationships and industry knowledge remain vital components of providing a premium-level service. “We have a very good relationship with our suppliers and we count those relationships in decades in some instances, not simply in years,” says Craig. “That doesn’t mean we stand still, though. The nature of the vehicles we repair means that we’re always upskilling in order to keep up with the complexities of modern European vehicles. Our keenness for employees to commit to ongoing training is paramount.” Currently Craig has staff participating in high-level electrical training with Audi and Porsche, with another staff member (there are currently 13 in the business including the admin team) due to head away for Volkswagen training soon. In the past, Raxworthy European has sent technicians to Germany and China for specialist training. Currently Raxworthy European is the only approved aluminium repairer for Audi in the South Island. Craig says that the people on the workshop floor make the company what it is, although, like many industries, getting the right people isn’t always straightforward. “I think the trades in general have suffered a lot over the years; I think we lost a lot of the skill base to the IT industry for a while. That’s changing again though, and the people who have come through the industry from school and the polytechnics in the last few years have become very valuable to entities like ours. “The job itself is getting more and more complex, so it isn’t always easy finding the right person to

do it. Staff retention is very important to us. We’ve got people here who started with us in 2004, 2005, 2006… I think that says a lot. “The people who work for us on our client’s vehicles are intelligent people, too. Our investment in both people and plant is continual; 18 months ago, we invested in a new spray booth. It’s a high-tech system that we use, so we’re careful about ensuring our people know how to use it efficiently.” The high-tech side of the business doesn’t begin and end with the tools in the workshop, though. Approximately five years ago, for example, Raxworthy European made the decision to move to waterborne paints. “It was a big move but one we felt was necessary,” says Craig. “I think the public looks to companies that are quite clearly leading the charge as far as new technology and new thinking is concerned. It has always been

important to us to be leaders rather than followers when it comes to this sort of thing, so switching to waterborne paints was a logical step. “We’re reducing our carbon footprint, making the environment safer for our team in the workshop and the community at large, and still offering the premium service we always have, so it has been a good move overall.” More than that, Raxworthy European was also awarded a Karara Award from Environment Canterbury for its efforts following the switch. “The industry will certainly change, but then, it has continually evolved anyway,” concludes Craig. “It’s just about ensuring you’re prepared as a business to take on the challenges and extra complexities of doing what you do to ensure your customers remain happy and your staff remain at the top of their game.” Find out more about the Raxworthy European service offering at raxworthy.co.nz

Ford Ranger Raptor

It’s possibly Ford’s most highly anticipated new vehicle launch since the return of the Mustang. What is it? Take the country’s most popular light commercial. Actually, scrub that; take the country’s most popular privately purchased passenger vehicle, bar none. Then add an aggressive body kit, more power and off-road tyres. This is no longer a ute. This is now a truck. What’s interesting about it? If someone told you back in, say, 1998, that one day people would eagerly spend nearly six figures on a double cab ute, you’d probably have raised an eyebrow. You might have even outwardly scoffed. But here we are. Next to SUVs, utes are exceedingly popular. Ford’s Ranger, in particular, is the most popular by a reasonable margin. So, adding performance attributes, more rugged off-road kit, and a fist-pumping nameplate all seems logical, really. And they’ll probably sell shed-loads, too. It’s a funny old world. Is it any good? The Ranger Raptor hasn’t been sampled yet, but if it builds on what the Ranger already offers with offroad-proven extras and super aggressive looks, then yeah, it’ll probably be pretty good. It looks the part, with a beefier body kit comprised of lots of Ford Performance parts, like a unique grille, HID headlights, and front and rear bumper assemblies. It rides on 33-inch diameter BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres, and also features Raptor-specific heavy-duty

side-steps to really drive the point home. Underneath the metal, the Raptor boasts an entirely unique chassis setup, with race-bred long-travel suspension with Fox Shox, aluminium upper and lower control arms, heavy duty skid-plates and underbody protection. The truck has a wider front and rear track and more ride height than the conventional Ranger, meaning better approach and departure angles, as well as water-wading skills up to 850mm. Under the hood there’s a new-generation Bi-Turbo diesel producing 157kW/500Nm through a 10-speed automatic with magnesium paddle shifters. This Ranger also features a unique six-mode Terrain

Management System (TMS), which includes low- and high-range four-wheel drive and a locking reardifferential. I’m keen to sample Baja mode (part of the TMS system), which Ford reckons will offer the ultimate off-road performance settings. What’s it going to cost? $84,990. Which is a fair chunk of change. But then, the Ranger Raptor is a fair bit of truck. And besides, plenty have laid down $70k for the Ranger Wildtrak 4WD Double Cab model, so an extra $15,000 almost seems like a bargain. Almost.

Jaguar I-Pace Look out Tesla; the mainstream is catching up in the performance EV stakes…

What is it? It’s Jaguar’s – yes, Jaguar’s – take on the passengerfriendly, sporty, practical EV. But in the shape of an SUV. And one that’ll hold its own when you ask it to drive reasonably swiftly into a tight corner. What’s interesting about it? There are already plenty of electric vehicles on the market, so Jaguar hasn’t changed the game here. But the thing with the I-Pace is that, while Nissan, Renault and BMW have all made interesting (and democratically priced, in the case of Nissan) EVs, they’ve all ploughed their own furrow. The I-Pace is the first mass-produced vehicle from an established manufacturer that has

been built specifically as a response to pioneering upstart Tesla. Jaguar Land Rover saw what Tesla did with the Model X SUV and thought, “We can do that”. And they have. Is it any good? Surprisingly good. We all know about the instant torque generated by electric motors, and the low centre of gravity afforded by battery packs under the floor. But the thing with the I-Pace is that it drives like a car engineered by people who love driving. Tesla’s Model X is phenomenal in a straight line. Show it a corner, however, and things don’t proceed quite as seamlessly.

Conversely, Jaguar encouraged media attending the I-Pace’s international press launch to lap Portugal’s famed Portimão Circuit, near Faro, in anger. The car gripped. It turned in. It accelerated like nothing experienced before and braked like everyone on board’s lives depended on it. It translated what was happening under the front wheels through the steering wheel with a precision no two-tonne vehicle has any right to. In short, it behaved like the most 21st-century of things: a performance SUV. Except I didn’t emit one molecule of carbon dioxide in experiencing all of this. And that is the I-Pace’s reason for being. Well, and taking kids to school and the dog to the beach. I didn’t do those things specifically, but with the available space in Jaguar’s most unconventional model ever, completing these tasks are undoubtedly a given also. If the rebirth of the electric vehicle — more than a century after its initial interpretation fell out of favour — is the most paradigm-shifting advent in the history of the mass-produced passenger car, then, with massproduction in mind, the Jaguar I-Pace will be the most carefully watched new model in recent history. What’s it going to cost? No idea yet, as we won’t see it here until early next year. Prices in the UK put it at around the NZ$130,000 mark, but that doesn’t take exchange rates and shipping into account. Maybe it’ll be a $150,000 machine? Time will tell.


New Cars

Kia Niro A Kia with a plug attached. Or not. There are several options here, which makes the Niro an interesting alternative. The straight hybrids record combined average fuel consumption of 3.8L/100km, which is pretty good going. To reiterate: this isn’t a small car. But the LTD PHEV’s combined fuel consumption builds on that again: it’s rated at just 1.3L/100km, although I’m assuming that figure would have been achieved using the LTD PHEV’s ‘Eco’ mode, which gives you more efficiency at the compromise of power. In the EX and LTD Hybrid models, the electric motor’s battery is recharged when the car is braking or when the driver coasts. The hybrid system allows small amounts of electric-only driving such as when setting off or when gently accelerating, but mostly the petrol engine and electric motor work in parallel. What is it? Kia insists on calling it an SUV. It’s not; it’s more like a large wagon. But to quibble is to derail the headline. This is Kia’s eco-minded model, offering the options of hybrid and plug-in hybrid motoring. A fully electric Niro will be here in early 2019, too. What’s interesting about it? Kia has essentially launched two — soon to be three — cars at once. The Niro 1.6-litre EX and LTD grade Hybrids are basically your cookie-cutter Prius-like petrol hybrid passenger car, offering up a conventional petrol engine boosted by the fuel-

saving abilities of a 32kW electric motor. The Niro 1.6-litre LTD PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) changes things up a bit by allowing the driver to plug in and recharge the on-board battery with a convenient plug at home, or out and about with a Type 2 fast-charge lead. The electric motor in this model is larger; 44.5kW. Yes you’re right; Hyundai did exactly the same thing with the Ioniq range a couple of years back. Is it any good? If you’re after better fuel economy from your familyfriendly wagon, then yes, the Niro will do the job.

What’s it going to cost? Not a lot. At least, not to start with. The entry-level EX Hybrid costs $34,990 and you get a roomy vehicle with all the usual modern comfort and convenience specification into the bargain. The LTD Hybrid features the same hybrid engine setup, but with extra glitter like 18” alloys, parking sensors front and rear and leather upholstery, and will cost you $43,990. The current range-topper — the LTD PHEV — costs $55,990 but is spec’d accordingly. There’s no word yet on what the fully electric Niro will cost when it arrives next year but expect a $10k premium (possibly more) over the LTD PHEV.

Mercedes-Benz X-Class Mercedes-Benz enters the world of the light commercial ute. Which is less of a surprise than you probably think. What is it? The second German brand to make a concerted effort at building a worthy pickup truck. It worked very well for Volkswagen (with the Amarok), so Mercedes-Benz has gone for broke, launching 13 variants into the New Zealand market. With a long tradition of commercial vehicle manufacturing, it’s hardly a shock… What’s interesting about it? … but what might be a bit of a shock is the X-Class’s secret shame: it’s actually a Nissan Navara underneath. The chassis, transmission and four-cylinder turbo diesel are all Nissan-sourced. The X-Class’s body is 70mm wider than the Navara’s though and no external body panels are shared between the two utes. So, it’s not really a Mercedes-Benz, then? Well, that seems a little harsh, but yeah, pretty much. That’s not to detract from what is a robust performer though. Sit in the X-Class and everything you touch and see is straight outta Stuttgart. And you have to assume there will be some ‘all-Mercedes’ models launched eventually. Possibly even ones with those famed letters ‘A’, ‘M’ and ‘G’ on the side.

t’s a slippery slope, but we reckon the owner of this insane HSV Maloo has finally reached the end … for now. The Maloo was a good start, with an LS2 rated at 307kW (412hp) from factory, but although it took around a year to find a suitable example finished in the amazing Morpheous purple, it didn’t take anywhere near as long for the owner to get bored with the Maloo’s factory power output. He knew the best man for the job would be Chris at Pro-Street Performance. We first heard about ProStreet Performance several years ago, after Chris

bolted a big turbo under the bonnet of an HSV GTS, and he’s still playing around with late-model GM performance cars. And, although the aftermarket provides so much support for GM’s LS engines, the owner didn’t want to do things the way every other person would. While forced induction would be the answer, a Magnusson blower with a factory bottom end wasn’t going to be the way. Instead, he opted for a brand-new GM LSA crate engine. Used in GM’s highest-performance cars, including the latest HSV VF GTS, the supercharged LSA

delivers 556hp straight from the crate. It’s not as simple a conversion as it may sound though, and Chris tells us that it was the first LSA-converted VE HSV in New Zealand. As you may have guessed, it didn’t take long for the owner to get used to the LSA’s power. Next up, Chris worked his magic on it, turning the wick up to 720hp, and finally reaching a stage where the owner wasn’t desperate for more. However, the car was still an HSV, and already had a reputation for being fast, but there was no indication as to just how much faster it had become.

Cue the next stage of the build — a TBS 6-71 supercharger, usually found on vehicles many years older than the Maloo. An aftermarket intake manifold allowed the use of a four-inch water-toair intercooler — necessary for the boost pressure being run — to which the big supercharger is bolted. Intake air is channelled through a 102mm billet throttle body — well disguised beneath the Garlits Streetcatcher scoop — on a supercharger adapter plate, and it’s worth mentioning that all the required sensors and wiring works off the LSA loom. The intake butterflies are another neat bit of attention to detail. Since the LSA runs a driveby-wire throttle body, there is no throttle cable, meaning no physical linkage. Instead, Chris adapted a vacuum-actuated bi-modal exhaust valve, commonly used in HSV exhaust systems, to control the butterflies. As it is operated off intake manifold vacuum, the flaps are fully open when the engine is

turned off, but works exactly as you’d expect when running. Although the supercharger conversion may sound straightforward, it wasn’t a simple case of bolt it on, wire it up, and all is well. A plethora of things needed to be seen to in order to get everything finished properly, such as the water pump neck, which required customizing for clearance, and the previously installed aftermarket injectors, which were already nearing their limit on the 720hp tune — now upgraded to 75lb/hr units. So far, the new engine combo has proven to be good for 802hp at 14psi of boost, and still runs easily on pump gas. It sounds just as angry as it should, with an incredible bark coming through the twin three-inch exhaust exits, and should finally be at a stage where the owner is satisfied with the performance on tap. That said, Chris says it’s getting near the reliable limit of the alloy block, which is probably a good thing.

The 20-inch concave Niche rear wheels are wrapped in 275/30ZR20 rubber, and despite their fat footprint, we have little doubt that they’d put up much of a match for the monster power plant at the other end. A triple-plate clutch helps keep things under control for the Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission, and a Harrop diff-centre holds everything together out back — with these features, smoke would be on tap should the owner elect to disable the factory traction control. Now, after an immense amount of work — including custom fabrication by Karl at K-Spec Fabrication — it would seem that the customer has ended up with what has got to be the angriest, and certainly most unique, Maloo in New Zealand. We’re looking forward to seeing this thing out there making 800hp worth of noise, although we’ve got to wonder how long it’s going to be before it’s back at Pro-Street Performance for yet another serving of horsepower.

hen the country treats you to a long weekend, it would be rude not to use it, and Auckland–based Renegade Rod & Custom Club have been known to make the most of Queen’s Birthday on the first Monday of June. With the recent completion of NorthWest Shopping Centre in Westgate, last year’s Parked Up Out West show marked the first collaboration between the shopping centre and the club, delivering a massive display spread across the entire rooftop car park. Hosting a car show like that in such a public manner — especially thanks to the support of NorthWest — also had its benefits

in a massive number of people taking a look, with an audience that may otherwise not have known, or cared, about a car show like it. Coming off last year’s success, the shows popularity meant this year’s Parked Up Out West was always going to succeed, although — as any event organizer will tell you — you can’t do anything about the weather. The forecast in the morning looked grim, which limited attendance from out of town. Many who would have driven down from Whangarei or up from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty were put off, but the show still enjoyed a pretty big turnout from locals not put off by the threat of rain.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast delivered shortly after, with steady rainfall that only became heavier, prompting a departure en masse. Even so, a good number of cars and people made it there, and a lot of kids had clearly taken advantage of the free facepainting and balloons on offer, so we’d say the whole thing was a great success despite the unfortunate circumstances provided from above. Parked Up Out West holds a special place in the hearts of car enthusiasts throughout the upper North Island, and we know that next year’s will be a good one … all we need to do is find a way to somehow ensure the weather stays in check!

1969 Holden HK Premier station wagon

ROAD-TRIPPING CLASSIC

WHEN IT CAME TO PACKING UP THE KIDS FOR THE BIG KIWI ROAD TRIP IN THE ’60S, THE CHOSEN METHOD OF TRANSPORT WAS A CLASSIC HOLDEN STATION WAGON

H

oldens have long been entwined in the lives of Ian and Jenny Ginns, from Ian’s first ride in a Holden in 1967 — his mate’s light green HR ute to the Barry’s Point Road rubbish dump — followed by a succession of ’60s and ’70s HK, HT, and HG models, through to the 1978 Brougham in which they brought their newborn son home from the hospital. But it’s this very rare and beautifully restored HK Holden Premier station wagon that the couple have poured their hearts into to enjoy for years to come.

Wagon Wheels The HK’s new life began when Ian and Jenny spotted a blue HK Premier wagon driving along the road. As they followed the Holden, it turned into a car dealer’s yard, and the couple speculated that the wagon might be up for sale. As they stopped and waited, the Holden’s owner emerged, giving Ian the chance to ask if he wanted to sell the Premier. The car wasn’t for sale at that stage, but telephone numbers were exchanged and, as luck would have it, a few months later Ian received a call from the owner. He was no longer using the original, three-owner Premier and wanted to sell it to someone who would look after it. After taking his mate, Barry, to Hamilton to check the car out, a deal was done and Ian owned the wagon. That all happened back in 1987. A spot of research by Ian confirmed that the Aussiebuilt Premier wagon had been originally shipped to New Zealand on the boat Karepo, arriving at Terry Motors in Blenheim (now Wadsco Motors) on April 8, 1969. A Few Words on the HK The 1968 HK ranks among the most important models in Holden’s history, and at the time undoubtedly represented the manufacturer’s most ambitious series to date, bringing a large array of additional models that were sleeker, looked more muscular and offered better safety features. Prior to the release of the HK, Holden’s position on

the Australian and New Zealand markets had looked unassailable, but the arrival of Ford’s V8-optional XR Falcon created a new set of buyer expectations, which left Holden with no other option than to introduce a seriously modernized full-sized vehicle line-up — one with the potential to drastically outshine the previous HD–HR models. Whilst six-cylinder engines still powered the majority of Holdens sold, the introduction of a single, Chevrolet 5.0-litre V8-powered HK model — usually equipped with two-speed Powerglide transmission — saw around 15 per cent of buyers opting for the bent eight. With pressure on Australian car manufacturers to contain costs and maximize Australian content, the subsequent models, the HT (halfway through the model run) and HG, received 4.2-litre and 5.0-litre versions of an all-Australian V8. The HK was also the first Holden to wear the soonto-be famous Kingswood name for the volumeselling model, replacing the name Special, while the base-model sedan was called Belmont. The luxury, flagship model, the Premier, might seem sparsely-furnished when compared to the most basic of today’s Holdens, but it was nothing less than prestigious transport when new. This model remained in Holden’s line-up and, together with its less luxuriously appointed stablemates, offered a larger choice of engines, transmissions and options than had previously been seen in a mass-produced Australian car.

From Tidy-up to Restoration Ian and Jenny used the Premier for weekend travels to Warkworth for around 10 years. After that, apart from the odd run, the Holden was effectively laid up for about 12 years. Ian put the Premier back on the road in 2013, with the help of his friend, Brian Thurston, who also used to work at Reo Motors in Takapuna, and Mike Parr of Mike Parr Automotive in Glenfield. Both Brian and Mike are as passionate about Holdens as Ian. The initial work included replacing all wheel cylinders and brake linings, as nothing much else had been done to the car, except for a new clutch and exhaust system installed back in 1986. With that work complete, the wagon was back on the road, but only a few months later, Ian decided it was time to treat the Premier to a tidy-up. With that in mind the wagon was taken to Dave at Auto Blast in Porana Road, Glenfield. There, the Holden’s underside was sandblasted and repainted with Resene Durepox. The car was then taken to Ian Hackett, of CarPro in Milford, for a small tidy-up, but things soon grew beyond that point. Ian and Jenny were originally only going to strip and respray the Holden’s roof, but ended up respraying the whole car after attending to a few minor rust repairs. The interior was completely stripped of all panels, seats and carpet before the body work commenced.

The motor was also removed and checked. While it was out of the car, Michael Parr Automotive replaced the front timing gear and frost plugs, and installed a full gasket set. The body was then taken back to CarPro where the front guards were removed, and all rust repairs completed. All the doors were removed, old car-park dings and dents were repaired, and the roof was fully stripped and painted in its original shade of Ermine White. The body was then repainted, using Glasurit paint, once again to the original colour — in this case, Hacienda Blue. To complete the wagon’s exterior, the bumpers and wheel trims were re-chromed. Once the Holden had been returned to Ian’s home garage, he decided to install a more sporty HK GTS dashboard, one that included instrument gauges rather than warning lights — with the ‘new’ speedometer being recalibrated to reflect the wagon’s original 94,000 miles (151,278km). Ian also installed the original seats, panels, and carpets, while Brian Thurston attended to any final mechanical work. As a nice period finishing touch, Ian also fitted a set of blinds for the rear side windows, these having been purchased from Australia. The car was quite literally finished just days before our photo shoot, and while there are still a few minor jobs that need attending to, it’s abundantly clear that Ian and Jenny will enjoying their gorgeous, freshly refurbished Premier wagon for a long time to come.

redicting the podium for any round of the national drifting series is an almost impossible task, one that requires a mix of guesswork and educated assumptions, and even those who have been around since the series’ inception often get it wrong — you really need to have a talented psychic on speed dial and a healthy dose of luck on your side to get within the ballpark. It’s one of those sports in which no one really knows what’s going to happen, or when, and even those that look to be on a hot streak can be knocked out within a single battle for just one simple mistake. The 2018 Link ECU D1NZ National Drifting Championship season has been no exception to this rule, with both the big-name and lesser known drivers trading places on the Pro leaderboard round by round. Heading into the final round at Pukekohe Park Raceway, May 12–13, Darren Kelly had a firm footing at the top with 277 points, while Cole Armstrong was only just behind with 24 fewer points (253); Aussie invader Matty Hill was still in with a shot at the Championship title on 229; and ‘Fanga Dan’ Woolhouse, on 214 points, could have nabbed a third title if a few key battles went his way. But, for two hopefuls, the Top 16 would see that dream shelved for another season. Matty Hill was

pipped by Dave Steedman, and Fanga Dan was taken down by the giant-killer Carl Thompson, who forced the two-time Drift King (DK) into three one-moretime battles, with Thompson taking the victory. With both Woolhouse and Hill out of title contention, it was was the Top 8 battles that saw an aggressivedriving Benji Wilkinson send home points leader Darren Kelly, putting his title hopes in jeopardy, while Cole Armstrong knocked out young buck Cody Pullen-Burry to make it through to the Top 4. On the other side of the tree, Gaz Whiter had beaten out Steedman for a Top 4 placing to face Thompson, but the experience of the four-time DK couldn’t be outmatched, and Whiter went on to the final battle against Armstrong, who had toppled Shane Van Gisbergen in a one-more-time repeat battle that mimicked that of the pairing at Round 2, and progressed against Wilkinson. Whiter forced Armstrong to pedal hard, pulling a decent gap during his lead run, but the defending champion wasn’t holding anything back on his own lead run, with a 196kph initiation — also claiming the fastest speed for the weekend. The tight battle would have the judges lean towards Whiter, awarding him his first round win since returning to the series, giving him enough points to elevate his Championship standing from ninth to third and

narrowly edge out Hill by just 18 points. On coming fourth overall, Hill said: “I never even thought I’d be coming up against these guys being so competitive this early on in my career here … the quality here in New Zealand is crazy compared to what I’m used to back in Australia. “The driving quality here is unreal ... I love driving here more [than in Australia]. I literally do not want to go home and would do another season right now.” Whiter said that it was a big surprise to come back and get third overall: “We did it three seasons ago after a terrible run … [This season] has been a testing one. It’s about being consistent, and we don’t have that this year with car issues. But, driving-wise, we were pretty confident and qualified top overall here at Puke. “I had a blast out there with Cole pushing the car to the absolute limit. You feed off each other, and you


need to keep pushing to make everyone better, which is what we like to do. It makes it more enjoyable for everyone, more enjoyable to watch, and just pushes everyone further and further. It’s just good fun.” With Armstrong in second for the round, it would bump Kelly back into second on the leader board and retain Armstrong the title by just seven points’ difference — the first back-to-back title win since Whiter did it six years ago with a triple streak. On coming second, Kelly said: “It’s a mixed feeling [to finish the Championship in second]. Obviously, we were coming into the final leading; to finish that close is a little disappointing, but it’s a first and second for the team, and we knew it was going to be a fight to the end for sure. “Cole’s driven amazing this year, and so has everyone else, the whole field has stepped up massively. It’s been a tough season for our team, and hasn’t be a dream run by any means while getting the car dialled in throughout. Although we’ve had two podiums this season, a first and a second, and up there with qualifying … next season we want to get some more seat time and fine-tune the car to get back in that [title] contention.” And from the back-to-back DK himself, Armstrong told us: “Consistency is key, man. This season, we tried to build an old car into something competitive, and it goes to show that, no matter what chassis we’re in, we can put together a really solid package and have a bit of fun. Gaz really showed it this weekend, too, where he got to do consistent runs in his car; no issues, no faults. “It wasn’t the best season this year — I had a few mistakes, a few crashes — but we just kept striving and pushing. It’s unreal to come here and go one and two with my good friend Darren [Kelly]. Next year, we’re going to work something really cool, because, if both of us can put our knowledge together, it’s going to be a force to reckoned with. “Next year is [set to be] his year. We can only help each other get to where we want to be and the achievements that we can get could be global, you know? Who knows where things could go. We had some awesome runs out on the track together. Bring on next year.”

Increase in EVs sees need for higher standards for crash repairers CRA SAYS CURRENT LACK OF REGULATION IN THE NEW ZEALAND COLLISION REPAIR MARKET CAN CREATE QUALITY CONTROL ISSUES FOR CONSUMERS, WITH THE SITUATION GETTING WORSE AS MORE CARS WITH ADVANCED HYBRID DRIVETRAINS AND ELECTRIC SYSTEMS ARRIVE.

ew standards have been introduced by the country’s largest body of panel beaters to cope with increasing numbers of EVs, hybrids and vehicles equipped with advanced safety technology on New Zealand roads. Collision Repair Association (CRA) spokesperson Neil Pritchard says the industry is moving to stay ahead of the rapid evolution in car manufacturing, which is increasing the complexity of vehicle repairs. Mr Pritchard says the current lack of regulation in the New Zealand collision repair market can create quality control issues for consumers. The situation is getting worse with the introduction of more cars equipped with active safety systems, advanced hybrid drivetrains, and electric systems, as well as the increased use of exotic materials in the vehicle manufacturing process. “With the increase in EVs, self-driving technology, and new types of construction materials, vehicle manufacturing has seen more advancement over the last decade than over the past century,” he says. “While EVs are touted as having a reduced need for mechanical servicing, when it comes to collision repairs, there is a significant increase in the risk and repair complexity to get them back on the road.” Mr Pritchard says the pace of this change is continuing to accelerate, with more such vehicles hitting New Zealand roads each week. “There are more than 7,200 EVs and hybrids now registered in New Zealand, which represents a 958 percent increase in vehicle registrations from just 680 vehicles only three years ago.” EVs bring with them their own set of challenges for panel beaters and collision repairers when damaged in an accident.

“Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. The risk associated with lithium-ion batteries found in EVs adds a high level of complexity to the repair process too, including potential electrocution of the repairer,” says Mr Pritchard. The CRA has also identified an elevated risk of fire, which prevents the vehicle from entering a spray booth meaning that the panel beater must introduce processes specific to that type of vehicle to complete the repair. “At the same time, many new models entering the market have advancements in safety technology which allow the vehicle to proactively mitigate or avoid collisions. “To accommodate this change, we are bringing in new international service quality standards to the industry which will see repairers commit to ongoing training, equipment upgrades, annual inspections and audit processes before they can become a Licensed Collision Repairer in this market. “The new standards will give consumers a more informed choice about their vehicle repairer,” he says. Mr Pritchard says modern vehicles are now made from high-strength steel, aluminium, and other exotic materials that require special training and equipment for the repairer to replicate the factory join when replacing structural parts of the vehicle. “The introduction of new internationally recognized I-CAR standards will mean the public can be reassured that their panel beater has undergone a training and audit process to keep them up to date with the latest technology,” he says. According to the CRA, there is already anecdotal evidence that the demand for front-end replacement parts for new cars has dropped away as more vehicles are able to automatically prevent this type of crash. “Feedback from our membership base suggested the nature and scope of vehicle crashes is beginning to change and will continue to do so as more advanced vehicles hit the local market over the coming years. “Not only do new vehicles with collision mitigation technology get into fewer front-end crashes, but when they do have accidents, the damage often tends to be more cosmetic than structural. “Despite this, these vehicles are becoming increasing more complex to repair as the cars are now equipped with sensors, cameras, and radar systems. What appears to be a minor accident from the exterior may have damaged the network of onboard technology,” says Mr Pritchard.
