Theft Sadly we were targeted by thieves recently and lead was stripped from the roof of our entrance porch causing severe flooding and damage to the surgery premises. We hope the entrance lobby will be back to normal use shortly but in the meantime, we will on occasions be asking patients to use a side entrance to allow repairs to be completed. Thank you for your patience during this time.

Christmas Opening Hours

The surgery will be shut from Saturday 25th December and will re-open on Wednesday 29th December. Some routine clinics will be suspended over the Christmas period and there will be reduced routine appointments. Please see our website or posters in the surgery for further details over this period.

New Year Opening Hours

The Surgery will be closed on Monday 3rd January, re-opening on Tuesday 4th January 2011.

Flu Clinics If you were unable to attend for your flu vaccination, please contact the surgery for an appointment. We now have limited stocks so it will be on a ‘first come first served basis’. Hopefully all patients in the ‘at risk’ categories have now had two invitations to attend but if you have not had yours, please contact the surgery as soon as possible.

New Website We are very pleased to announce that our new website is almost ready for use – you will be able to book appointments, submit prescriptions requests and send details of changes of address, telephone numbers etc via this website. There is advice on managing minor ailments and links to other useful health websites. We hope to be able to offer online registration for new patients and a contact form as well. Full details of the services and clinics will be available to view along with lots of other useful information for patients.

BISHOPSTOKE PLAYERS “NO DINNER FOR SINNERS” BY EDWARD TAYLOR

As always, I sat down in my seat looking forward to Bishopstoke Players‟ latest production and I wasn‟t disappointed. With all the usual complex timings and mix-up that farce brings to stage Jim (Kevin Bowers) had a tricky night in store! However his confidence and ease of playing an ambitious young man, who has yet to master tact, was superb. As the plot thickens, his girlfriend, Helen (Naomi Wiley) storms out leaving Jim with no „wife‟ to present to his prudish boss, who insists on his senior staff being married. Jim is forced to look for alternative women to help host and cook dinner and is rejected by all his previous girlfriends; then his flirtatious, infatuated secretary, Terri, chances to pop in. This was a stunning performance from Mica Sharples, as she related her regret at not being able to help him as she is rehearsing for a play named “The Naked Dance”. As Jim grows more frantic his cleaner, Edna (Joanna Warner) calls round to tidy in preparation for the boss‟s visit causing endless laughs, and ultimately pretends to be the wife for the evening much to Jim‟s distaste. She was fantastic and provided a great contrast to the worried Jim rushing around. As the play came to a climax, the American boss (Andrew Craddock) and his wife (Rachel Craig) enter the scene and, unfortunately for Jim, Helen and Terri also turn up to help him out - creating inevitable disaster. Overall, this was a marvellous evening out as the actors kept the audience laughing all evening – a superb directorial debut by Maggie Allington! Now we can look forward to their next production – the pantomime “TOM THUMB” by Paul Reakes from 26th to 29th January. Tickets are £7 and £5 (under 16s). Anne-Marie Baker

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat…. It doesn’t seem possible that, here we are again, Christmas snapping at our heels. It only seems a few weeks since I took the Christmas tree down from last year. Well, as our shopping centres start filling up to bursting point with shoppers, Police are out in force to dissuade those inclined to help themselves, from committing crimes. A special operation is being run, with a zero tolerance policy against shoplifters. People caught helping themselves in stores WILL be arrested and prosecuted. There is an assumption from some thieves that stealing from shops is a victimless crime. Clearly, that is not the case, and we all finish up paying increased prices to cover the cost of those who help themselves. In the current economic climate, smaller traders particularly can ill afford to have their stock stolen. Often, shoplifting gangs will travel from outside the area to target a town, fill their bags, and then move on. Police will be at bus and rail stations targeting those that thought it might be a good idea to travel to Hampshire and Isle of Wight to steal their Christmas. Whilst being jostled in the throng, it is easy for a pickpocket to have your purse or wallet out of your bag, or pocket. Avoid using a back pocket for your wallet, and keep your handbag zipped up at all times. If you have a zipped pocket in your jacket, that will also slow down any would-be thief. Keep an eye on your shopping bags too. There are many distractions at this time of year, and if you have your young children with you, they too will be more excited and take more of your attention. It only takes a moment for someone to pick up one of your shopping bags and walk away with it. You may not even notice until you get home, and then wonder if you’re going mad as you were sure you’d bought….. When loading your car in supermarket car parks, keep an eye on your trolley. Again, it only takes a moment for someone to walk by and take something from the top of your trolley whilst you are putting your handbag in the front of the car, or strapping your children into their seats. A bottle of spirits or even a joint of meat can easily disappear without you even noticing, and can be quite expensive to replace. Don’t let someone else give your presents this Christmas! Remember – if you have information about ANY crime, please do not hesitate to give Crimestoppers a call on 0800 555 111. I wish you a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Talking PREGNANCY BABY LOSS, MISCARRIAGE, ABORTION

Recently a very private and personal Loss went public, making headline news for Lily Allen and partner Sam Cooper. They had sadly lost their baby at 6months pregnancy and this was a second miscarriage for top celebrity and vocal artist Lily Allen. After the first Miscarriage, Lily spoke about her feelings of depression and ‘loosing the plot a bit’ She also spoke of how her relationship with Ed Simmons had been affected and broke up shortly afterwards. Nothing really prepares you for the deep sadness and grief of loosing a baby? The range of feelings can be devastating. You can be left feeling very low, depressed and so alone. Every visit to the bathroom is a powerful reminder that your dream has just been shattered. It can be traumatic physically, emotionally, psychologically and some relationships never recover. Perhaps the grief and Loss of the baby was too much anyway for an already struggling relationship? Was the pregnancy unplanned? And the prospect of parenthood, well, maybe not ready for it yet? One thing is sure pregnancy that tiny seed of life, focuses the mind and cannot be ignored or hidden. Whether it’s baby Loss, miscarriage, abortion, unplanned pregnancy, these are matters not easily spoken about. People respond and cope differently and you have to be wise who you choose to share your story with. But some celebrities are opening up about their experiences. Which is giving permission for others to discuss it too? What about you? have you spoken about your private grief to anyone? Mariah Carey said of her Miscarriage…’ it shook us up and took us to a place that was very dark and difficult. Celine Dione said in her interview with Oprah, the whole incident was very sad. Celebrities are opening up and talking...How about you? Do you need to talk to someone? Even if it happened to you many years ago or just last week, Our Team at the Lilies Pregnancy Counselling centre is here for you. Peter J Storey OBE FCIS Clerk to the Parish Council 2 Old Fromans Farm King’s Somborne Stockbridge Hampshire SO20 6QD Tel/fax 01794 389220 e-mail: bishopstoke.pc@btconnect.com

1.

Lest We Forget Councillors wish to thank all those who supported the Armistice Day Service at the War Memorial and the Remembrance Sunday Service in St Mary‟s Church and elsewhere. The turnout was thought to be the largest for many years. 2. Community grants Councillors were very pleased to approve a grant of £800 to the Friends of Bishopstoke Guiding to help meet the costs of improving some steps and installing safety rails and also £50 to the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group who provide advice to farmers and other local landowners on conservation matters. Precept and Expenditure Budget 2011-12 At their last meeting of the calendar year, Councillors set the basic Parish Precept for the next financial year at £127,700 which is an increase of £2,750 on the current year to allow for known inflationary increases and to preserve the levels of support and maintenance of those areas which had been transferred from the borough council, namely the Bishopstoke Cemetery and the allotments, and to provide for the planned transfer of responsibility for the bus shelters. The decision to increase the Precept was taken after careful deliberation by Councillors in view of the difficult times the nation is experiencing. However, it will actually result in slight reduction in council tax paid by Bishopstoke residents because the level of tax paid is based upon the number of dwellings in the parish and these have increased as a result of new developments during the past year. The reduction is likely to be 0.7% equivalent to £0.27p to a Band D council tax payer. The precepted income will be supplemented from the Parish reserves and grants received enabling a total expenditure budget of £132,230 for the next financial year. Nearly £77,000 of the Parish income will be ploughed back to the direct benefit of the community, examples including the parish contribution towards the partnership funding arrangement between Bishopstoke and Fair Oak and Horton Heath Parish Councils, Hampshire County Council Youth Services and Eastleigh Borough Council, for the Y Zone Youth Centre, the contribution towards the cost of a police community support officer for Bishopstoke, on-going improvements to leisure facilities in the Parish recreation areas and Stoke Park Woods, and grants to local charities and community groups. The Council maintains a list of ideas and improvements and is always willing to consider suggestions from local people who should contact the Clerk accordingly. 4. Temporary Parish Office The Assistant Clerk continues to be present in the temporary Parish Office located in the Methodist Church Hall on Sedgwick Road on Wednesday mornings between 11.00am and 1.00pm. The PCSOs also call in during these hours. Please use this facility to meet your local Councillor, the Clerk and the Assistant Clerk, and discuss your thoughts on our Parish and its facilities. Free bus service The Council was pleased to note that Xelabus had teamed up with Tesco to provide a free bus service from Underwood Road departing 09.32am and Riverside departing 09.37am and at that time past the hour for the next six hours to Tesco in Eastleigh on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until Christmas. The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Tuesday 25 January 2011at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall, Sedgwick Road, Bishopstoke. (Note: no meeting in December)

For further information, please contact the Parish Clerk: Peter Storey OBE telephone number 01794 389220 or email: bishopstoke.pc@btconnect.com or visit the Parish website at: www.bishopstokepc.hampshire.org.uk Please mention Parish Pages when responding to adverts
