At last the summer holidays are nearly upon us and although that may mean weeks of childcare planned with military precision, hopefully there’ll be some days to relax and really unwind at the end of the school year. Maize maze at Barleymow’s Once again Barleymow’s Maize Maze and Activity Field opens its gates for traditional outdoor family fun without a television or computer in sight! The activity field lets both children and parents enjoy messing about together but, because of its open layout, equally allows you to watch the kids run free whilst you sit back relax, enjoy the fantastic views and maybe a cream tea!

Activities include the straw mountain with tunnels and slides, trampolines, sandpit, ball games, zip wire, pedal go carts, skittles, giant draughts and barrel train rides, wellie wanging not to mention the prize draw quiz which runs through the maize maze. Season tickets are available which mean after your second visit all further visits are free. Also look out for our new ice cream shack serving creamy jersey milk ice creams and very naughty sundaes! RDA recognise Excellence at Divoky Divoky Riding School at Downhead, between Shepton Mallet and Frome have been awarded the RDA accessibility mark as recognition of their high standard of training and care of disabled riders. The staff and students at Divoky attended a special training day recently conducted by Sally Hall of the RDA who praised them for their dedication and high standard of work with disabled riders. Pat Bishop who organised the day said how impressed she was with all the staff and trainees who turned up to take part in the day particularly as lots came in on their day off, and not forgetting the volunteers who give up their free time to help with the leading and side walking, all year round come rain come shine.

Divoky will now be offering group riding lessons to local special schools in the area so if you have a child who would like to ride with the RDA group please let your school know as soon as possible so that riding can be arranged from September. Divoky also offer mainstream

fete, with the support of the community, raised £1500. We were so pleased with how many businesses, artists and charities attended running their own stalls and activities. Our fete had everything from bouncy castles and face painting, dancing and songs, Great Shakes Milk Shakes, Secret World with their two owls, Avalon Prints with scenes of Somerset, Radstock Museum, Bee Keepers with specialist honey and outfits to try on, Black Dog tile company (who are working with us next year on a mural project), to the big event: the fancy dress parade and the raffle! With top prizes of a Mulberry Handbag, tablet, three course dinner at The

Swan, Dinner at the Good Earth, Wookey Hole tickets, and loads more including £50 beauty vouchers, it caused quite a stir and made a fortune! Donations had come flooding in in the cake variety and the stall had nothing left from Gluten Free Somerset delights to the Wells Country Market brain balls and spicy samosas. Everyone was well fed, well entertained, even beautified on the nail and hair stalls! We had the whole school decorated with flags, bunting and rainbows courtesy of a local party business. The whole community got on board and we can’t wait to top it next year, but Mrs Philp says someone else has to go in the stocks next time! By Tia Bell, Head Girl

Ancient, natural and modern marvels in LEGO The Museum of Somerset’s ‘blockbuster’ exhibition for summer 2015 will be called ‘Brick Wonders’ – Wonders of the World made out of LEGO bricks. The exhibition opens on Saturday 11 July and runs until Saturday 2 October.

The LEGO models cover thousands of years of history, and every corner of the planet. There are models of the wonders of the ancient world, through to wonders of the modern age such as the internet, transport and the media. They include the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Great Wall of China, Old London Bridge, an operating theatre and a huge model of a modern airport. There will be over 70 models, ranging in size from a few

centimetres to several metres. The models have been made by Warren Elsmore, and are designed to appeal to all ages. LEGO bricks are unique in having been a top-selling toy for over 50 years. This special exhibition will be open during the same hours as the Museum of Somerset, Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pm. It is expected to be very popular so the museum will also open on Mondays during the summer school holidays. Tickets cost £2 per person, with under-3s free. The exhibition includes an opportunity to get hands-on and have a go at creating a model. During the school holidays there will be a larger ‘play zone’ for children to enjoy.

CHILDREN from Somerset are invited to a Wildlife Weekend being held with Exmoor Zoo at a garden centre in the county this month.

Travel back in time when Dinosaurs walked our earth! Lurking amongst the tropical trees in the depth of the valley are some of the latest in Dinosaur animatronics.

Youngsters will be able to explore many different types of flora and fauna during the weekend at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre in Monkton Heathfield on July 25 and 26 from 10am until 4pm. Liz Woodward, Pet Centre Manager at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre near Taunton, said: “Our Wildlife Weekends are always really popular and lots of fun. Representatives from Exmoor Zoo will be joining us on each day to talk to visitors about wildlife and the environment and they’ll be bringing a selection of creatures along with them too. “The weekend has an exploring-theme so we’re asking children to get involved and dress up in their best explorer gear for the event. There will be explorer trails for them to take part in throughout the garden centre.”

Watch out for the young T-Rex lurking round the corner, his mother is close behind! Watch the UK’s most realistic full sized animatronic T-Rex come to life, but don’t stand too close to Dilophosaurus, you may get wet! Visit the park’s Dinosaur Museum where you can see fantastic and rare exhibits including a complete Allosaurus skeleton and one of the largest nest of fossilized eggs ever discovered. We also have a flock of crossbred ewes on the farm that had their lambs in late March and early April. All through the summer you can bottle feed lambs at 11.30am and 3 o’clock each day and learn some amazing woolly facts! During the summer

Vincent Van Gogh dies 29 July, 1890 Van Gogh is today one of the most popular of the Post-Impressionist painters, although he was not widely appreciated during his lifetime. He is now famed for the great vitality of his works which are characterised by expressive and emotive use of brilliant colour and energetic application of impastoed paint. The traumas of his life, documented in his letters, have tended to dominate and distort modern perceptions of his art. Van Gogh was born in Holland, the son of a pastor; he travelled to London in 1873, and first visited Paris in 1874. Over the next decade he was employed in various ways, including as a lay preacher. By 1883 he had started painting, and in 1885-6 he attended the academy in Antwerp where he was impressed by Japanese prints and by the work of Rubens. On his return to Paris in 1886 he met artists such as Degas, Gauguin and Seurat, and as a result lightened the colours he used. In 1888 Van Gogh settled in Arles in Provence, France, where he was visited by Gauguin and painted his now famous series of ‘Sunflowers’. In the following year a nervous breakdown brought him to a sanatorium at St Remy; it was at this period that he executed ‘A Wheatfield, with Cypresses’. In 1890, suffering from a new bout of depression, he shot himself in the chest and died two days later.

This is one of four paintings of sunflowers (see image above) dating from August and September 1888. Van Gogh intended to decorate Gauguin’s room with these paintings in the so-called Yellow House that he rented in Arles in the South of France. He and Gauguin worked there together between October and December 1888. Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo in August 1888, ‘I am hard at it, painting with the enthusiasm of a Marseillais eating bouillabaisse, which won’t surprise you when you know that what I’m at is the painting of some sunflowers. If I carry out this idea there will be a dozen panels. So the whole thing will be a symphony in blue and yellow. I am working at it every morning from sunrise on, for the flowers fade so quickly. I am now on the fourth

picture of sunflowers. This fourth one is a bunch of 14 flowers ... it gives a singular effect.’ The dying flowers are built up with thick brushstrokes (impasto). The impasto evokes the texture of the seed-heads. Van Gogh produced a replica of this painting in January 1889, and perhaps another one later in the year. The various versions and replicas remain much debated among Van Gogh scholars.

Keep it simple It takes many years to master butterfly identification, so start with the easy ones until your confidence has built up. Common butterflies are just as beautiful and much easier for children to spot.

Avoid jerky movements Try to avoid startling these delicate creatures with sudden, jerky movements. Even pointing at them can spook them. If you do spook a butterfly, just stand quietly and watch until it settles down, then try to approach it again. It will often return to the same plant.

Think about plants If you’re hoping to spot butterflies in your own garden, the type of plants you grow is very important. The best garden plants are buddleia (davidii ‘Dartmoor’ and weyerana),Verbena bonariensis, marjoram and good old-fashioned michaelmas daises. Relax on a walk Butterfly spotting doesn’t need to be painstaking. Simply take yourself off on a walk and keep your eyes peeled. Zoo volunteer wins national photo award A Devon photographer has won a national zoo photography award. Ray Wiltshire, from Paignton, took the award with his picture, Forty Winks, showing Bornean orang utan mother Mali and baby Tatau asleep on their island at Paignton Zoo.

The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums announced the winners of its annual photography competition at an award ceremony recently. Entries show life in a top zoo collection, work behind the

scenes and zoo conservation work around the world. The competition is open to staff, members, and volunteers of top British and Irish zoos. There were four categories; Ray won the Threatened Species class, where the winner was selected from entries to all the other categories. Paignton Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling said: “It is a delightful photograph showing the bond between mother and baby. Ray is a deserving winner, he has taken so many fine photos here – his

patience and dedication are extraordinary and his eye for the perfect picture second to none.” Ray said: “The picture was taken last August. Mali finished eating and ambled over to the pampas grass with Tatau clinging on. She laid down and in next to no time Tatau was asleep. Mali made the most of it and dozed off as well. This bliss didn’t last long though, because after a few minutes there were a few spot of rain - Mali hates the rain and she promptly got up and went indoors for shelter!”

They are joined on stage and screen by a sockstealing ‘Fluffalope’ and the permanently confused Mr Baffled…!

Cream tea lovers will have a fresh chance to indulge this summer when children’s charity Action Medical Research runs its hugely popular cream teas in a box scheme for a second time.

Following two hugely successful West End runs and a season at Alton Towers Resort, The Go!Go!Go! Show was asked by Nickelodeon UK to film a series of pop videos for Nick Jr and their songs can now be seen and heard daily on the channel. This workshop will be exclusive to Razzamataz students and a great experience for them to work with an industry professional!

They will all learn about presenting on children’s television, and older students will get the chance to pick up some tips with a Q&A session. “We believe it is important to encourage more and children to get into performing arts, which is shown to not only have positive effects on health and wellbeing but also on confidence and selfesteem, massively important for all children in today’s high pressure society” says Claire Walford, Principal of Razzamataz Yeovil. The workshop will take place at Westfield Academy on the 17th October 2015. The new term begins on 19th September 2015 with limited free taster sessions available. Razzamataz Theatre Schools offer exceptional part-time training in dance, drama and singing together with exciting opportunities to perform. Classes are for children from age 2 to 18 and

allow students to experience a range of performance styles from classic West End musical theatre to funky street dance.

After the sweet success of its first delivery, which saw thousands of cream teas delivered to homes, schools and workplaces around the country, the charity is running a second delivery in August. Its delicious British cream teas in a box – which contain scones, Tiptree strawberry jam, Rodda’s Cornish clotted cream and three strawberry crème chocolates, as well as the more traditional Yorkshire Tea, knife and napkin – will be delivered on Friday 7 August 2015. “The reaction to our initial cream teas in a box campaign on 18 June was so overwhelming that we’ve decided to bring the deliveries back by popular demand,”

says Tracey Edwards, Action’s Cream Tea Events Manager. “All you have to do is order by Thursday, 30 July, and your cream tea will be delivered to your door on Friday, 7 August. The minimum order is for 10 boxes, so why not get together with friends or colleagues to share a delicious treat and raise funds for sick babies and children? “It’s also the perfect way to say thank you to someone by giving them the chance to take a break and put the kettle on while our scrumptious cream teas are delivered to the door.” Action Medical Research is currently funding research around stillbirth, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children. your child to too much sun may significantly increase their risk of skin cancer later in life. Covering up, staying in the shade and using sunscreen are the best ways to protect you and your children against the sun.

And it’s not just when you’re on holiday abroad you need to think about slapping on the sunscreen, the sun can be just as strong in the UK. People often get caught out when they are not expecting it, like when out for a walk or playing in the garden. Bee Scene! Popular familyfriendly survey of wild flowers re-launches this summer holiday thanks to Nature’s Path Plantlife’s hugely successful ‘Bee Scene’ survey has been rescued by family-owned cereal maker Nature’s Path, after its original funding had ended. Over 30,000 children have already taken part in the wild flower survey since its launch in 2010. Now thousands more will have the opportunity to explore the nature on their doorstep and learn about the wild flowers growing there.

Families can discover whether their local area is good for bumblebees by looking for bee-friendly wild flowers such as foxgloves, dandelions and clovers in their local green spaces. The results are then uploaded onto a virtual meadow map of the UK. The survey raises awareness and understanding in children of the importance of biodiversity in their local area, starting them on a path to enjoying wild flowers and realising their importance as part of our natural heritage. It also helps them understand the importance of wild plants for our declining pollinators. 90% of teachers who did the survey reported that ‘Bee scene’ had given them new learning about the natural environment and helped pupils understand that different wild plants are important for bees. Nature’s Path has a strong

commitment to sustainability and the natural environment and has stepped in to enable the Bee Scene initiative to reach many thousands more children and families this year after its National Lottery funding ended. A spokesperson comments “As an organic, family owned company, with a strong commitment to the natural environment we recognise the importance of educating children early about the importance of our wild flowers and the pollinators that rely on them. We are thrilled to be able to support Plantlife to continue this fantastic survey, so that many more children and families can take part and

College Nursery gains glowing Ofsted report The Nursery at Yeovil College has gained another glowing assessment following its recent Ofsted visit, with the report highlighting many excellent features.

The report commented on the exciting range of activities and opportunities set up by the staff for the children, including both indoor and outdoor play as well as the choice of interactive activities designed to encourage educational development and fitness. Close partnerships between nursery staff, the children and their parents were particularly highlighted as a strength: “Staff work in close partnership with parents to meet children’s needs and routines. The consistent staff provide reassurance and comfort to children, who form warm and trusting relationships with them, this promotes children’s emotional well-being effectively” “Parents are closely involved in their child’s learning

and development, contributing information about what their children learn at home and carrying out activities in the nursery such as paper making, music and storytelling”. The Nursery team of 17 staff were also recognised for their commitment to continuous training and development as well as their understanding of their roles and responsibilities to help safeguard children’s welfare. “Staff skilfully interacted to challenge children well and extend their learning. They provide lots of encouragement and praise to help children succeed and to acknowledge their achievements. This promotes their confidence and the skills needed for future learning effectively”. Regular opportunities for parents to give feedback throughout the year have resulted in consistent positive praise. The most recent survey echoed the findings of

this Ofsted inspection, where 100% of responses from parents were either good or excellent, 97% considered the attitude and care of the nursery staff to be excellent, as well as 93% who also considered the quality of care at the nursery to be excellent. Yeovil College Nursery Manager Michelle Hobson said “We are delighted to have maintained our “Good” rating with Ofsted and will continue to develop and implement new ideas and activities within the nursery. We have a fantastic team whose caring and enthusiastic approach enables us to offer a friendly and safe environment for children to develop and learn. We have very strong relationships with our parents and encourage lots of communication and new ideas to continuously improve the service that we offer”. “Over the last few years we have developed an exciting and

fun programme of activities and experiences for our children including yoga, music, cooking, outdoor activities, fundraising and creative projects, supported by many staff and students across different departments in the College. We pride ourselves on treating each of our children with great care, listening to their needs and supporting and nurturing them to develop and reach their full potential.” Children are also encouraged to get involved in learning about healthy foods and exercise in a fun way from an early age. As well as freshly cooked meals prepared by the Nursery’s very own chef, children get involved in growing and tending to a range of vegetables in the nursery vegetable garden - from seedlings through to kitchen ingredients! Yeovil College Nursery is situated on the campus of

lawyers and mediators to redress the balance.” There are 100,000 children involved in divorce every year in the UK and the majority of children experiencing family separation say they don’t get listened to. The recent Governmentcommissioned Voice of the Child report states that ‘while there has been considerable focus in recent years on the provision of better information and support services for separating parents there has been little parallel investment in information and support for children and young people.’ The report adds that it is ‘particularly important’ that an ‘authoritative’ website should be available for children and young people in separating families and details a wide range of issues to be covered. Family lawyers and mediators are mobilizing in response to the report’s recommendations, to provide more information, support and guidance through KITM’s new one-stop-shop website, where young people will be able to hear from others who have been through the

experience. The initiative is funded entirely by the family lawyers and mediators, with the UK’s largest family law practice, Irwin Mitchell, spearheading the launch as key sponsor. A social media campaign will call on young people to tell their stories and give advice to their peers, and on-line counselling will be delivered in partnership with Relate. Martin Loxley, Head of Family Law at Irwin Mitchell, says: “We encourage parents to consider the best interests of children throughout the entire separation and divorce process. Being able to refer parents and children to the Kids in The Middle website and the support network the charity offers young people is an incredibly valuable service.” KITM already has over 30 family lawyers and mediators committed as members and believes by encouraging many more lawyers and mediators to join them, it will help bridge the gap and offer children in the UK better information and a louder voice. Ruth Sutherland, CEO of Relate, the leading relationships charity, said:

“It is hugely important to recognise that separation is not just about adults - it affects the whole family, particularly children and young people. Ongoing conflict can have a profound impact on the youngest members of the family. Empowering children and young people to have their voice heard during family separation increases the chances of reaching and maintaining agreements around things like living arrangements and access. This in turn will help the next generation to grow into happier young adults with bright futures ahead.” Zelda West-Meads, Agony Aunt with the Mail on Sunday – You magazine and professional counsellor, said: “‘Helping children and young people realize they are not alone can make a huge difference at this highly emotional and turbulent time in their lives. Providing information and support is invaluable. It can be particularly helpful to talk to other young people going through similar experiences, because this can give them insight into their own problems and feelings and help them feel more in control.”

Woof. Vroom vroom. Clip clop. Oops. That’s the way to do it for kids at the Forde Abbey Charity Summer Fair

This year’s Forde Abbey Charity Summer Fair is the perfect place to bring children of all ages to keep them amused for at least one day of the summer holidays. It takes place on Thursday 30 July in the heart of the West Country and there’s something for everyone (including 2,000 pieces of home made cake!).

Kids can take part in the dog show with the family pet and there’s even a special child handler class this year. For boys and girls that prefer a little more vroom vroom than woof, there will be 160 incredible classic cars to see as well as some vintage tractors. There’s a juggler and a Punch and Judy Show and for those that favour a different kind of horsepower, there’s an amazing western riding

display and an opportunity to meet and perhaps even have a ride on one of these beautifully trained horses afterwards. There’ll be pony carriage rides and whilst we know it’s holiday time, a small maths calculation could win them a prize for guessing the age (in days) of England’s oldest Shetland pony, ‘Twiglet’, who

lives at Forde Abbey and is often seen wandering around the gardens. Set in the beautiful awardwinning gardens of Forde Abbey, founded by Cistercian monks over 800 years ago, there’s plenty for parents too with 60 shopping stalls including an opportunity to buy some wonderful equestrian

art, a Farmers’ Market and food court, a working dog scurry, fly fishing tuition and demonstration and a falconry display. Often found balancing precariously on a small three legged stool, Chris lives and works in Wells (and is a well known encumbrance to pedestrians)! Having drawn and painted most of the city, Chris will now be sharing his paintings in the Exhibition Space upstairs in the

800 year old Palace. Chris started drawing his somewhat wobbly buildings six years ago after a career in leading edge advertising. His newfound career has him sketching some of the world’s most beautiful architecture, and many not so beautiful places too! On a recent trip to Cuba, the back streets of Havana belie a faded grandeur, intricately captured with Chris’s delicate pen work, with splashes of sunlit

colour. Chris works directly, ink on paper. No rulers, no pencil guidelines, no erasers, just splat! Looking up (the name of the exhibition) at wondrous architecture, Chris flits from Venice to Istanbul, San Francisco to Madrid drawing all the way, all the time. The exhibition mixes the faraway places with a good many from Wells; luckily beauty is everywhere, right on your doorstep, but it does mean Looking Up.

The farm gate and barn doors are flung open to the public and this is the chance to peek behind the scenes at River Cottage HQ and meet the team, see the animals and gardens, as well of course enjoy the very best of what’s in season from the River Cottage food tent. Joan Armatrading is to be a special guest at the Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza in August, Michael Eavis has announced. The singer is currently mid-way through her last major world tour and will be joining Ray Davies, who was lead vocalist and songwriter for The Kinks, for the annual extravaganza at Glastonbury Abbey. They will be supported by The Shires, who will be bringing their country-influenced music to The Extravaganza. Joan will be sharing highlights of the last four decades utilising various guitars (and playing techniques) and a piano. The talent which created songs such as Love and Affection, Me Myself I, Drop the Pilot and Willow and brought her to the world’s attention will be at the

Extravaganza on August 8. The Shires are made up of Ben Earle, who once lived in Somerset, and Crissie Rhodes who both featured in the BBC 2 documentary, Nashville UK, last year. This year’s event - the 19th in a long running summer tradition for the West Country - will take place in the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey and will end with the traditional firework display.
