That extra hour of daylight makes all the difference and I’m all set now for adventuring outdoors on nature trails or even more appealing, Easter trails! There are chocolates everywhere: garden centres, historic houses, zoos. OUT & ABOUT

Easter at Living Coasts

The Easter holidays are the ideal opportunity to go somewhere different – like Living Coasts, on the Torquay harbour-side. Let the fresh sea air blow away the winter as you explore above and below decks. The combination of cheeky free-roaming penguins, restful wading birds and mysterious aquarium species is unique. The single sweeping path is easy on prams, wheelchairs and little legs - and the view from the cafe is great, whether you’re looking at the food in front of you or the panorama of the Bay through the windows! Over Easter there will be special daily enrichment at the animal talks: these will vary dayto-day, so check what’s going to happen on the day you decide to visit when you arrive at the ticket hut. You could see things like the fur seals being given flatfish - a tasty treat that they really enjoy; eggs on boats for the otters; toys for the octopus; or a bubble machine for the penguins.

For the Easter long weekend there’s a traditional Eggs-cellent Easter egg trail kindly sponsored by Marshfield Farm, plus talks and activities. The colourful egg trail will lead the way to fun facts about the animals - and there’s a chocolate bunny at the end (while stocks last)! Trail sheets are just £1.50; standard admission prices apply. Look out for some welcome signs of Spring; you might see birds displaying, building nests, sitting on eggs – or even spot chicks! And, if you want to do something silly, then get yourself into the giant deckchair in the entrance hall and take a selfie! Meanwhile, Tuesday 25th April is World Penguin Day, which makes it the ideal occasion to visit Living Coasts and help the zoo keepers celebrate these amazing birds. Penguins are marvellous; they are real survivors, living, laying their eggs and raising their young in some of the most hostile environments on Earth, from the ice and snow of Antarctica to rocky ocean coasts.

Easter at Paignton Zoo Easter means eggs – but when you visit Paignton Zoo this Easter holiday weekend you can follow an egg trail with a twist… The Paignton Zoo Reptile Eggs-travaganza runs from 14th to 17th April and involves a journey around the Zoo to discover a variety of reptile eggs. Find out fun facts about crocodiles, tortoises and more - you'll even receive a chocolate treat for all your hard work. The trail sheets are £1.50 each while stocks last and there’s one chocolate per trail sheet. The event is kindly supported by Marshfield Farm Real Dairy Ice Cream. April is National Frog Month, so hop along to Paignton Zoo to celebrate with the experts. Frogs are fascinating; did you know that there are over 5,000 species of frog? There are glass frogs that have translucent skin so you can see their bones and muscles. Another species in Indonesia has no lungs - they breathe through their skin! During the Easter school holidays in April there will be special talks in Amphibian Ark, daily at 12.30pm; a bugeating challenge so you can be (almost) just like a frog and special activity sheets to pick up and take home so you can learn how to make a toad abode.

Paignton Zoo is open all winter, but it really does start to buzz again at this time of year. With the warmer weather comes Spring blossom and bulbs and new arrivals of the furry and feathered kind. The miniature train begins to run more regularly and the seasonal food outlets start to open their doors. Now is a good time to think about an annual pass, which gets you into Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts and Newquay Zoo in Cornwall as often as you like, plus free or discounted entry to nine other zoos! http://www.paigntonzoo. org.uk/support-us/annual-pass

Easter Eggstravaganza at Monkey World! This Easter is an egg-citing time to be visiting Monkey World, as the first 100 children into the park each day from Good Friday to Easter Monday receive a FREE Easter Egg! Open every day over the Easter holidays, come and see our internationallyacclaimed rescue centre, home to over 250 primates – including the largest group of chimps outside Africa. Many have been neglected, kept in unnatural conditions, or experienced unbelievable cruelty. At Monkey World, they can all enjoy the company of their own kind in a safe and natural environment, and some are now part of international

breeding programmes for endangered species. Combining fun with conservation and animal education, half-hourly talks at the park explain all about man’s closest living relative. Visitors can see the stars of TV’s ‘Monkey Life’, then ‘monkey around’ in the south’s largest Great Ape play area for children with its huge variety of swings, slides, and climbing frames. The children’s Activity Centre will also be open throughout the Easter

holidays, where kids can make a present for the primates, and create their own sand art to take home with them!

For more details, please go to: www.monkeyworld.org, email apes@monkeyworld.org or call 01929 462537

Animals, adventure and great play at Court Farm Country Park! Celebrating its 26th year of being open to the public, Court Farm Country Park in Banwell is looking forward to providing another fun-filled summer of entertainment for all the family.

The centre has been voted a finalist in the Farm Attraction of the Year competition three times in recent years. Owner Peter Gwyn says the accolade is in recognition of the farm’s friendly atmosphere and excellent facilities. With over 25,000sq ft of undercover attractions and playgrounds, together with a brilliant outdoor adventure castle, everyone can enjoy a day in the countryside whatever the weather. Budding Farmers and adventurers will love the Safari Jeep Track, diggers and ride on tractors. There are two large indoor adventure playgrounds including sandpits and the farm’s own Cowboy fort, which suit children of all ages. All visitors can enjoy the free tractor rides around this real working farm. In July, a new attraction is due to open for the summer season. The Maize Maze will give the whole family the chance to solve the puzzle. The maze is set in five acres and, at a height of eight feet, it comes complete

with LOADS OF WAYS OF GETTING COMPLETELY LOST. For smaller children a simpler maze is planned, giving visitors of all ages a chance to enjoy the fun. Tractor rides, pony rides, ferret shows, bottlefeeding – and the host of other things going on - will leave your children begging to come back time and time again. Court Farm Country Park is home to many friendly animals, which you can touch and hold. With lambs, piglets, goats, deer and horses, children can marvel at the antics of the baby animals.

As with many of the other experiences on the farm, the educational value is priceless. Also running again for the season is the Milking Show, which takes place twice a day. It is a fun and informative experience giving kids the chance to get up close and find out where milk really comes from.

For more details visit the farms website at www.courtfarmcountrypark.co.uk or call (01934) 822383. Court Farm Country Park is open all year round, seven days a week from 10am to 5.30pm.

Spring - March, April and May Male and female bird Spring is a time when everything is growing and bursting into life. Birds are singing, leaves are unfolding, butterflies are starting to be seen and mammals are beginning to wake from their winter sleep.

Spring is usually said to start at the beginning of March and the 21st of March is the Spring Equinox; the date on which day and night are of equal length.

Male and fem

This season is a time of days getting longer and the spring sunshine bringing growth and greenery everywhere with buds bursting and leaves unfolding. Birdsong reaches a peak and many flowers appear, in turn attracting insect-life, including bees and butterflies. Animals that hibernated over winter appear on the first warm days of spring so keep an eye out in early Spring for hedgehogs, newly emerged queen bees, frogs, toads, grass snakes, lizards and adders.

Other animals such as squirrels become more active and are easier to spot. Millions of migrant birds arrive, with chiffchaffs, sand martins and wheatears amongst the first to appear in March and swallows, swifts, cuckoos, nightingales and many warblers in April and May. Nature is at its most busy in Spring, every day brings Blackbird changes, the (m) sap is rising, House sparrow (m) and for many species finding a mate and successfully breeding is top priority. Lace up for National Walking Month 2017 Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, is urging the public to ‘Try20’ during National Walking Month this May. The campaign encourages people to walk for 20 minutes every day throughout May and observe the big differences small steps can make. Last year, Living Streets’ Try20 campaign saw thousands of people across the UK pledge to walk for 20 minutes a day. A follow up survey in December found that 75 per cent of pledgers were still walking for 20 minutes a day and reporting stories of weight loss, money saving, improved social life and increased fitness. Living Streets recommends walking as a free, easy and fun way to improve your health. This year, Living Streets will also be commissioning an extensive survey to try and find the best cities in the UK for walking judged on a range of criteria, including safety, air pollution and street clutter. Anyone across the UK will be able to ‘Rate their city walk’ throughout National Walking Month in an online

quiz. The charity will then offer recommendations on action participants could take to make their city more walking-friendly. Key messages: ● Try20 this May: add a 20 minute walk into your day. This small change makes a big difference to your health and wellbeing; ● 20 minutes of walking a day is a good step towards achieving 150 minutes of physical activity a week as recommended by the Chief Medical Officer; ● You don’t have to go out of your way to exercise: walk your daily journey to work, to the shops, or the school run – or skip a stop on public transport; ● Getting people out of their cars and onto their feet is part of the solution to the UK’s congestion and air pollution problems; ● 'Rate your walk’ and help us improve spaces and create a walking nation where everyone can enjoy the benefits this simple act brings on streets that are fit for walking. Multi-Michelin-starred chef Jean-Christophe Novelli visited Tops Day Nurseries to deliver a special cookery class and shared healthy eating tips with chefs within the family of 17 day nurseries. Tops Day Nurseries were contacted by the Novelli Academy for more information about the low sugar menus the nurseries provide to help tackle the obesity crisis. An assistant for ‘the nation’s favourite French chef’ spotted the story on the news and informed Jean-Christophe of Tops Day Nurseries new menus. Jean-Christophe showed a keen interest in learning more about the project lead by Tops Day Nurseries, particularly with his own passion for ensuring dishes are created in a health conscious manner. Happy children at All Hallows

Choosing a school for your children is one of the most important decisions parents make, which is why at All Hallows we are so proud of the work we do with our pupils. We see it is as our responsibility to help children grow and develop from Early Years through to Year 8, when they leave us as confident young people ready to stride out into their senior school. Happy children are successful children and our

first aim for all the pupils is to provide them with a safe and secure environment where they are able to discover who they are, form strong friendships and develop their many talents. In the classroom, beyond the classroom in our stunning grounds and in every activity we offer, the focus is on enjoying new learning, learning how to learn, having a go, developing a good work ethic and acquiring skills that will last well beyond childhood. Each pupil is supported and

encouraged by the other boys and girls and by a strong and very committed staff. Whilst protected and nurtured, the children are also challenged and stretched in order to develop their ability to thrive as resilient adults in the future. Our Head, Dr Trevor Richards, is a chartered Educational Psychologist, who practises what we preach – leading whole child meetings regularly, and overseeing the SENCo provision to ensure that our pupils have the best start in life.

Queens's College Pre-Prep We believe that our small classes, engaging teaching and superb facilities ensure children have the very best start in Early Years education, building a strong foundation for future learning. We were delighted to have this reinforced with an ‘outstanding’ rating in EYFS in our last OFSTED inspection. Our aim at Queen’s College Pre-Prep is to nurture and develop every individual’s talents, ensuring that every pupil is the best that they can be and achieves their potential. Our reception classes provide a stimulating, fun, child-centred learning environment. We encourage our pupils to follow their natural curiosity and become enthusiastic learners and recognise that children flourish when they are allowed the freedom to control their own learning. Dynamic and creative topicbased teaching provides a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum for all children. Every week, our children take part in a Forest School activity, swim, enjoy two PE sessions, French and Music. We pride ourselves on our outstanding pastoral care – building strong relationships with our parents and focusing on getting to know each individual child to develop their

self-esteem, confidence and independence. We offer a variety of transitional activities to our pre-school children in the term before they start Reception to allow them to become familiar with the setting and teachers and to ensure a relaxed, happy and smooth introduction to school. We recognise that parents may be apprehensive about

their child starting school and invite them to information evenings and other events prior to their child joining. We also hold weekly parent coffee mornings and a weekly family assembly while our parents’ committee organises regular social events for parents and families. Come and see how we inspire young minds and experience the buzz of purposeful learning.

Visit our Open Morning on Monday, May 1st (9.30am-12noon) or book a personal visit – email junioradmissions@queenscollege.org.uk or call 01823 278928.

A New adventure begins at King's Hall School

OPEN DAY Starting school is perhaps one of the most emotional journeys you and your child will go through during their formative years. You will all be likely to be very excited about this next step in your child’s learning journey, yet also anxious. There will be endless questions... will they cope? Will they make friends? At King’s Hall Pre-Prep (for children aged 2-7) we understand this combination of excitement and anxiety. We

draw on our vast experience to make the transition from home to nursery or school as smooth as possible. Ultimately, we want the very first day to be the start of a new adventure; each child has a blank map ready to start filling in as they begin their voyage. Unique and successful journeys are achieved through forming close partnerships between staff and parents who can work together to help guide and steer children’s paths, if needs

be. This relationship begins the minute you register with us so that by the time the big day comes, we have a shared understanding of what is best for your child. We would be delighted to meet you and your child to show you all that we can offer. Our next Open Day is on Friday 28 April or you can arrange to visit any time by calling Emma Guppy on 01823 285921 or visiting www.kingshalltaunton. co.uk for more information.

The Centre, which currently operates from Hestercombe House & Gardens outside Taunton, has outgrown its current facilities and will move to Richard Huish College from 22 April 2017, changing its name to CYM Taunton. John Abbott, Principal of Richard Huish College said “At Huish, we are renowned for the talent of our music students and excellence of teaching across A Level and vocational music courses. Some of our students have been involved with CYM for many years, so this partnership, with such an outstanding organisation, is a natural step for us.” CYM Taunton, formerly Hestercombe CYM, opened in March 2014, and has since become a fast-growing pillar of the Taunton community, offering young musicians aged 5-18 in the South West the opportunity to gain access to ensembles, performance workshops and individual lessons in all orchestral instruments as well as singing, piano, guitar, bass guitar and

During the summer term CYM Taunton, which is led by Rachael Parvin, will hold a series of open days at Richard Huish College,

offering free workshops for under-18s, tours of the facilities and Q&A sessions with staff members. The open days take place on 29 April, 20 May, 17 June and 24 June between 9am and 12pm and booking information can be found below. EDUCATION, INFORMATION

All round excellence Starting Reception this September? at Wellington If it is academic results you are concerned about for your child, Wellington School has just what you need. We had superb GCSE and A Level results across all subjects and 5 of our pupils went to Oxford or Cambridge this year with many more heading to the prestigious Russell Group Universities. Pupils study the more rigorous IGCSE in Maths, Languages and Sciences as well as Latin and Greek and the emphasis is strongly academic. However, Wellington has so much more to offer than exam results. The performing arts go from strength to strength and Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils enjoyed producing a spectacular production of Oliver. There are workshops, creative performances and technical opportunities and with a huge range of bands, orchestras and ensembles, the whole school is taking advantage of a variety of exciting opportunities. Our superb Chapel Choir performs regularly and our versatile musicians regularly sweep the board in singing competitions and exam results. We have superb sports facilities and a unique new Sport and Wellbeing department

with specialist strength and conditioning coaches who take fitness to new levels across all sporting disciplines. Our competitive sports have been resoundingly successful this year and the new Wellbeing Programme teaches pupils a healthy lifestyle that will serve them at school and long into the future. This includes nutrition, Judo, sports psychology and a vibrant and active Outdoor Education programme. We nurture and teach pupils from 2 -11 in the Prep School and 11-18 in the Senior School, and we are justly proud of the rounded, all-encompassing education they receive. We call it “Learning For Life”. Come and see what makes

us so special. Contact us on 01823 668800 or admissions@ wellington-school.org.uk to find out more about our scholarship and entry procedures. Wellington Prep School has opened the doors to a host of two year olds in the new Chapel Nursery. Is it time to put a spring in your step?

With daffodils blooming, is it time to put a spring in your step and make some changes? You didn’t (did you?) stick to your New Year’s Resolutions and now perhaps is the time to have a look at longer term goals rather than one month wonders. So why not make Spring the time you take the steps you need to change your life in the long run. We’ve all been there and

sometimes it’s difficult to know where to make that change, particularly when it comes to employment. You spend a huge amount of your life in work, and it’s important for health and wellbeing to enjoy what you do. “It is possible and when you tackle one thing at a time” says Julia Hill (pictured), a 36 year old mumpreneur from Andover. Like many other mums in the UK, Julia struggled to juggle a career as a Data Analyst Team Leader with her two beautiful young children. And, like many other mums, Julia felt that she was being pulled in all directions. After the birth of her second child Julia knew things had to change. Although she’d been there 12 years, her job was no longer fulfilling her and her young child was in nursery;

neither of them were happy. Julia looked at the aspects of her role as a Data Analyst Team Leader and realised that what she loved was working with numbers. As they say, from small acorns grow big trees. Julia investigated which roles included a large amount of numeracy and would also provide the flexibility to work around her children. Then, she looked at which providers would be best suited to deliver the Bookkeeping qualifications she needed. After researching all options, Julia decided on a Bookkeeping course with Open Study College/ ICB and taking the bull by the horns, signed up for ICB Levels 2, 3 and 4 certificates in Bookkeeping. Being out of the learning cycle for some time, Julia

A-lone parents

The most isolated generation ever UK MUMS are suffering a crippling epidemic of loneliness - leading them to be dubbed ‘the most isolated generation ever’. Despite 24-hour social media contact, a shocking 92 per cent of mums admit that they feel lonely - with 54 per cent feeling more friendless than before they had children. The new study from video parenting site ChannelMum. com found 70 per cent of current mums with dependent children say their generation is the loneliest ever, compared to 14 per cent who believe it was their own mothers and 16 per cent who feel it was their grandmothers who were most alone. Of mums who do feel disconnected and abandoned, a huge 61 per cent try to hide their feelings from friends and family, and only 38 per cent have ever told their partner how they feel. Worryingly, 55 per cent of lonely mums say being isolated has left them suffering anxiety, while almost half (47%) per cent feel ‘very stressed’. Four in ten (37%) regularly cry while 29 per cent have struggled to leave the house with fear. A further one in 20 admit they drink to cope with the loneliness whilst 1.5 per cent even self-harm. And 16 per cent admit to getting angry with their children due to their unhappiness. The poll of 2,025 mothers found the biggest source of isolation comes from ‘cliquey and bitchy’ groups at the school gates or baby & toddler groups, with 51 per cent of mothers revealing they feel excluded. A quarter feel alone as they live far from their own families while a third (30%)

feel other mums are coping better or they don’t know how to meet more ‘mummy mates’. Almost half admit social media makes them feel worse looking at other mums ‘perfect lives’ while a third compare their bodies to other mums online. But surprisingly, it is rich mums who are most likely to be isolated with 70 per cent of mothers polled saying they wouldn’t approach a wealthy or upper class mum to be a friend. Over half of Muslim mums admit they feel lonely as other mothers are hesitant about approaching them - with 35 per cent of nonMuslim mothers admitting they are nervous about speaking with a mum who wore a Hijab. A further 23 per cent won’t approach mums from other countries while 27 per cent of mums don’t try to befriend mothers from another culture. One in five also said they are worried about making friends with a mum who has children with special needs, along with seven per cent who are frightened about befriending single mums. Meanwhile older mums are more likely to feel isolated compared to younger mums. And sadly, two in five of mums even admitted they wouldn’t invite the child of a mum they didn’t know to a party or playdate - suggesting divisions are being perpetuated to the next generation. The study showed the main reasons mums are scared to approach other mothers is being judged, with two in five fearing they ‘will be looked down on’. A third were worried about accidentally causing offence or ‘saying the wrong thing’ while 35

per cent simply believe ‘we are too different’. As a result, modern mums are now a quarter more likely to confide in online friends than real world friends about feeling lonely - with online friends as valuable as ‘real world’ ones. A third of mums revealed they like seeing other mum’s ‘parenting fails’ online as it reminds them others are struggling too, while almost a quarter find having someone to turn to 24 hours online as very valuable.

soon found that she enjoyed distance learning as it gave her the flexibility to learn when it suited her and before long, in just one year, Julia had completed levels 2 and 3 with flying colours, achieving distinctions in most of the exams. Julia went on to work for another bookkeeping business to gain experience whilst in the process of setting up her own Bookkeeping business. Then, after less than a year of studies Julia was awarded her own Bookkeeping Practice licence in June last year. "As a mum with young children you feel that your employment opportunities are limited to either compromising your childcare or stacking shelves. I decided to be the owner of my own destiny and thanks to the courses through

Open Study and ICB, I am now on the way to having a thriving Bookkeeping business which is rewarding for me and works for our family." Julia said. "I gained an Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) qualification through Open Study College and exams with ICB. I found the course easy to follow with brilliant tutor support and it was a very smooth process.” Julia adds “It has not only allowed me to set up my business, my ongoing ICB membership also provides great networking opportunities. With ICB, you don’t just get the qualification then you’re on your own, they provide the support to help you start your own business. This, together with the recognised ICB accreditation, has helped me network with

and secure my first client." "It’s daunting starting a business, but ICB has given me the tools I needed to open my new practice together with the ongoing support and networking which has been a great help.” Julia added "I am already working with companies to deliver Bookkeeping services and I hope that my business will grow through recommendation of the outstanding service I deliver." This time of year is a time for reflection on what’s good and bad. In these turbulent times, it’s good to try and keep focused on the positive. Take that first step towards a better life. So, will you change your life in 2017? #changeyourlife #education #mumpreneurs www.openstudycollege.com

Overall, the report also revealed 80 per cent of mothers want more mum friends but 30% have never started a conversation with another mother which led to them being friends. To overcome this, two thirds of mums agreed they want to slow down their busy lives and make more time to talk with other mums, while 55 per cent say mums must be less judgemental. Half say simply ‘smiling and being more approachable’ will lead to extra friends along with 48 per cent who say mums must learn ‘you are not alone and others are going through the same feelings’. And 44 per cent want more community events involving children, while 30 per cent

vow to learn more about other countries and cultures to bring communities together. Siobhan Freegard, founder of ChannelMum.com - who admits to suffering crippling loneliness after the birth of her first child - said: “We all know having a child takes a physical toll on your body, but it can take a mental toll too. It’s terrifying that in our connected ‘always on’ society, nine in ten mums still feel isolated and lonely, often with deeply troubling consequences. “Being a mum can be tough but we need to remember there is more that unites us than divides us. Scratch the surface and us mums are going through the same fears, worries and joys. “As a society, we need to get back to the idea of it taking a

village to raise a child, and to help and support parents. So today, take the time to smile at another mum - it may be the only smile she gets all day, and could lead to the start of a new friendship.” #YANA Challenge To support lonely mums, ChannelMum.com has launched the #YANA (You Are Not Alone) Challenge, to help connect mums online and offline. Mums are being challenged to carry out one of five daily activities to widen their friendship group, meet new mums and feel supported.
