Ocado calls on kids to help bin the nation’s food waste Young inventors and pint-sized pioneers get creative to fight against food waste at home The Ocado Food Waste Challenge with Little Inventors is calling on all budding Edison’s and Einsteins to cook up an invention idea that could help to reduce food waste in the home. Little Inventors is founded on the belief that children’s ideas are invaluable, and their uninhibited imagination can lead to some amazing and powerful inventions. All ideas to help avoid throwing food away are welcome without limits, whether wonderfully wacky or perfectly practical. Suzanne Westlake, Head of Corporate Responsibility & Corporate Affairs at Ocado, explains: “We’re really excited to get children and families thinking creatively about the issue. If we uncover something amazing, we’ll be looking to turn it into a fully functioning product and list it on ocado.com for our customers. Watch this space!” The project comes after the UK’s first online-only supermarket released its nearzero food waste figures earlier this month at 0.02% - just 1 in 6,000 items - alongside its new Fight Food Waste platform. Determined to become the first supermarket with zero edible waste, Ocado already helps households throw away less food through its Product Life Guarantee, which promises to deliver products to customers with plenty of time to enjoy before expiry, and receipts that are arranged by Use By dates to help shoppers plan meals effectively. However, with 7.3 million tonnes of food and drink being binned every year in the UK, the retailer is now hoping to

uncover the next big idea to help customers to carry on the low wastage mission at home. According to leading waste charity WRAP (the Waste and Resources Action Programme), some of the most common reasons for throwing food away include not storing it correctly or using it in time, preparing and cooking more than we need, and lack of planning. With the help of Little Inventors and its new Food Waste Challenge, online grocery retailer Ocado is eager to help the nation overcome these obstacles and rescue edible food from ending up in the bin. Helen White, Special Adviser on Household Food Waste at WRAP, sheds some light on the household food waste issue: “In the UK, more than half of food waste occurs in the home, and a family of four could easily save an average of £700 every year simply by using up all the food they buy. “It’s great to see a leading supermarket like Ocado taking the charge and reducing their food waste to almost zero. As individuals, we need to start looking after and loving our food to reduce the amount that gets wasted in the home too. It would make such a difference to the world around us – and that’s something we can all get on board with.” To help the nation’s budding brains get inspired, Chief Inventor at Little Inventors, Dominic Wilcox, is hosting interactive workshops at selected schools across the country, where he will share some of his very own food waste inventions to get young imaginations and creativity

Little Inventors’ Chief Inventor, Dominic Wilcox, puts the Ocado Food Waste Challenge to primary school pupils

flowing. Teachers far and wide are also being encouraged to host their own sessions with their classes using the handy Ocado Food Waste Challenge resource pack easily available to download at Ocado. LittleInventors.org. To judge the Ocado Food Waste Challenge entries, a panel made up of some of the best minds in food and technology are coming together, including Dominic Wilcox, Chief Inventor at Little Inventors; Suzanne Westlake, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Ocado; Helen White, Special Adviser at WRAP. The winner will get to see their invention drawing turned into reality by the Little Inventors ‘Magnificent Makers’ and exhibited at the Great Exhibition of the North this summer. They will also win a trip to Newcastle to see the showcase with their family, as well as £250 of Ocado vouchers. Commenting on the challenge, Dominic Wilcox, Chief Inventor at Little Inventors; adds: “Children have

amazing imaginations and their ideas should be taken seriously – they’re the biggest group of naturally creative people and I know some excellent ideas will be revealed. I often get my inspiration from the everyday stuff around us, and with the Ocado Food Waste Challenge we want to encourage kids to think differently about the everyday food they throw away and why. My workshops will not only be playful and fun, but educational too - I’m really looking forward to seeing what fantastical ideas the children come up with!” How to get involved: To enter the Ocado Food Waste Challenge, simply visit Ocado. LittleInventors.org, download the resource pack and upload a drawing of your inventions that could help tackle food waste at home. All entries will be showcased on the online gallery for inspiration. The competition is now open and will close for entries on Monday 7 May 2018. So sharpen those pencils and get inventing!

Research reveals mums really do have a favourite child (but only according to their kids)

While the majority of British mums say they love their kids equally, a significant number report that their kids do believe they have a favourite child. According to the survey of 1,000 UK mothers of one or more children, carried out by One4all, the Post Office gift card, 1 in 5 mums say their kids believe they actually favour one of their children more than the others. And interestingly, youngest children are the most likely to believe they are their mum’s favourite. As many as 20% of mums say their children will go as far as to tease one another over who is the favourite. While the research proved that the vast majority of British mums love their children equally,

it did reveal how the relationship between a mother and her kids varies according to the order in which they were born. The survey revealed that firstborns really do stick close to their mums, and even in adulthood are most likely to socialise with their mum, inviting them out with their friends and turning to them for advice. Mums also report believing that they have the most in common with their oldest child. Meanwhile, it appears that there is some truth in ‘middle children syndrome’ – the idea that middle children receive the least attention – however it could be that this is actually being driven by the children themselves. The research shows that they are the least reliant on mum,

even in adulthood. They are the least likely to bring home their dirty laundry, to move back home after moving out, and go to the bank of mum for handouts. Despite youngest children being in some ways the worst behaved – for example, they are least likely to listen to their mum – they are the most physically affectionate. Aoife Davey, group marketing manager at One4all Gift Cards, commented: “The research revealed some really interesting findings around how mums and their kids’ relationships vary depending on whether they were born first, last or in the middle and even more so, around how so many kids think their mum has a favourite.

“It’s not so surprising to see that the baby of the family believes they are the favourite and while there’s no denying the relationship varies between a mother and her first born, middle children and last born, our research shows a mother’s love for her child remains the same, no matter when they were born.” “Mums will worry about everything with their first-born child, but by the time the other children come along, it’s likely they have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly of motherhood and will be able to relax a lot more. Also, younger siblings will learn from the mistakes their older brothers or sisters will make, and so are likely to be less of a worry to mums.”

Five good reasons Win an Aquaplane to teach your Swimming Aid (worth baby to swim… £24.99) with Hippychick!

● Social Interaction ● Health benefits – cognitive ● Better eating and sleeping

patterns ● Bonding ● Water safety We recommend taking your baby swimming as soon as you feel ready to get in the pool – normally at around six weeks. The reason we recommend starting as early as possible is because, the younger your baby is the happier they are likely to be. Don’t forget, they’ve only just left the comfort of your womb, so being in warm water will still feel entirely natural. Older babies may have already developed a fear of water so the earlier you can get them to the pool the better they will adjust to a new environment. Baby swimming is still pretty much unregulated so when looking into lessons for your baby or toddler ask the swim school about their programme and the instructors qualifications. Swimkidz lessons consist of creatively structured plans for each level of swimming building on skills so progression is made throughout. Our instructors

not only take nationally and internationally recognised baby swimming qualifications but undertake months of in-house training and moderating. We don’t stop there though as we know a lot of our clients want their children to swim with us for as long as possible so instructors also take their full teaching qualifications allowing them to teach up to competitive levels. All staff are DBS checked. Ready for the pool? If your baby is 12 weeks or 12lbs you can visit a baby friendly pool of 30 degrees or more. If the temperature is slightly under this, you can use a wetsuit but watch out for signs of baby getting cold which is a blue tinge around the lips and constant crying. If your baby is smaller then look for a pool of 32 degrees or above. Don’t forget all your baby essentials, swim nappy, changing mat, towels as baby can get quite cold once they are out of the pool. To find out more about Swimkidz Bath’s amazing programme please visit our website www.swimkidz.co.uk or contact Sarah@swimkidz.co.uk

High cost of school holiday childcare The UK’s largest childcare platform has revealed that the three major school holidays cost parents almost £3,500 on average in childcare costs. Childcare.co.uk tracked its internal data for one year and monitored the average costs for childcare services such as childminders, nurseries, nannies, and babysitters across the country during the three major school holidays – Easter, Summer and Christmas. Members of the public can find out what the average childcare cost is in their area by visiting this link: https://www.childcare. co.uk/costs The most expensive average hourly rates for childcare services nationally are: Nannying

(£9.81), Babysitting (£8.32), Childminding (£4.89) followed by day nurseries (£5.60). Childcare.co.uk allows parents to search for and connect with babysitters, childminders, nannies, nurseries, private tutors and schools and is the largest online community for parents in Britain. Richard Conway, CEO and founder of Childcare.co.uk said, “Most parents will recognise the worry of having to try and find a nanny or childminder to care for the kids throughout the school holidays while they work. We’re just hoping that we can help out a few stressed parents find the right childcarer for them in time for the ‘dreaded’ summer holidays!”

Hippychick are delighted to offer a chance to win an innovative Aquaplane swimming aid! Covering all the main stages of a child’s swimming development, Aquaplane helps to build confidence in the water whilst evolving their technique. As a back float, Aquaplane helps children achieve the correct swimming position. It features adjustable straps that do not restrict movement in the water – these grow with your child, throughout the stages of learning to swim. The wide and low profile helps enable children to have more balance

It’s Spring at Torridge House Cottages

when swimming on their back, and the patented design gives a superior position compared to all other swimming aids. During the later stages of learning to swim, Aquaplane can be used as a streamlined kick board. As further progress is achieved, Aquaplane turns into a performance tool to build stamina and strength. Aquaplane is endorsed by Team GB Olympic swimmer Chris Cook, ‘Our swimmers love the freedom the Aquaplane gives them in the water. It works wonders for their technique!’ and GB Commonwealth Games finalist Dan Coombs, ‘I use Aquaplane to help children increase confidence and adopt the correct body position when learning to swim.’

To be in with a chance of winning one of three Aquaplanes, simply answer the following question: What is the name of the green Aquaplane on the Hippychick website? Email your answer to enter@ hippychick.com. The winners will be notified by email on 30th April 2018. Terms and conditions apply.

Farm fun and learning for children at Ashill Primary All 35 children who attend Ashill Primary School near Ilminster got to see first hand the workings of their local dairy farm,on Friday 9 March. Hosted by Mr and Mrs Fry at Hatchers Pond Farm, the visit was a first for the school as part of their topic ‘Farm to Fork’ to learn more about where food comes from. Pupils had a fantastic interactive afternoon at the local dairy farm. Children had the chance to see cows and calves, chickens and lambs and to make flour from grain. The youngest children collected eggs and everyone had the opportunity to hold a weekold lamb.

Mrs Fry commented that “the children had so many interesting questions such as the reasons for the cow’s tags, why the milk is steaming when it comes out of the cow and if cows are black with white spots or white with black spots!" The visit greatly added to the understanding of the

‘Farm to Fork’ topic and the children were delighted with the goody bags supplied by the Agricultural Development Board. The school would like to thank Mr and Mrs Fry for hosting the visit and the Speke family for donating wheat grain.

The School Report talks technical The School Report, a web based educational information portal for parents, talks all things technical with Peter Wylie, Director of Education for The Baker Dearing Educational Trust. Theresa May recently announced that “Technical Education needs to be valued with equal esteem if our economy is to prosper” - words which have been welcomed by many who have been championing the cause for years. As parents we all want what is best for our children, but are we aware of all the options available? As Peter explains, ”University Technical Colleges (UTC’s)

are publicly funded free technical secondary schools for 14-19-year old’s and offer a combined curriculum with the opportunity to study for academic and technical qualifications. Employers have complained for decades that many children leaving school do not have the attitudes, skills and knowledge required to make a successful start to working life. This demand for high-quality technical education has been constantly unmet since the abolition of technical schools in the 1960’s. UTC’s are now leading the way for technically minded students that want an education that will give

them the skills and attitudes employers need and a clear route to their chosen career.” If we are to meet our country’s labour force needs with the aspirations of our future generations, we must transform opinions and raise expectations by truly delivering an educational system that delivers excellence for all. The School Report talks in more depth with Peter about the advantages and impressive statistics of a technical education on their blog page at www. theschoolreport.co.uk If you would like more information on a UTC education, please visit www.utcolleges.org

Flowers are blooming and the air is filled with bird song. It's the perfect time to get out and about! Wild Spring - top five things to look for

Wild Spring - top five things to do

’Budburst’

Visit a seabird colony

Watch the progress of Spring in a hedge! The buds of hawthorn burst and new fresh green leaves appear followed by creamy white flowers in late April or May. The blossom was once known as ‘May’ but in many places flowers can now appear in April, perhaps an indication that climate change is making Spring come earlier, although not this year!

Queen bumblebees

Look out for the first bumblebees on warm days in March! These will be queens which have successfully survived the winter and are now seeking nectar and pollen from Spring flowers.

Britain has some of the most important seabird colonies in Europe. Watching puffins, guillemots, razorbills, gannets, cormorants, shags, fulmars and gulls is one of Britain’s top wildlife experiences. You don’t just watch a seabird colony, you smell it and hear it too! Fantastic.

Visit a local Wildlife Trust woodland nature reserve Many woodland flowers are at their best before the leaves are fully open on the trees. If you find carpets of bluebells, wood anemones, wild garlic, wood sorrel and early purple orchids you can be sure it is an ancient woodland and likely to be good for many other kinds of wildlife too. So make sure you go on a Spring woodland walk – it will keep you healthy too!

Migrant birds

Chiffchaffs are usually one of the first migrant birds to arrive in March and they can be heard singing their names in a repetitive ‘chiff chaff’ song from the tops of trees. Cuckoos, swallows and house martins usually arrive in April and swifts may not appear until early May.

Learn bird songs

Spring is the perfect season to enjoy and appreciate bird song. Many local Wildlife Trusts organise dawn chorus walks that you can take part in. Why not get up early and start by learning bird songs in your own garden? Taking an early morning walk is always great for watching wildlife and early morning is the best time for listening to bird song. Our guide to bird song, with Brambly Hedge, is a great way to become an expert! Visit our website www.wildlifewatch.org.uk

Frogs and toads on the move

One of the first signs of spring is the spawning of frogs and toads. Look for masses of jelly-like frog spawn in local ponds and ditches. Toads often travel long distances to suitable ponds to breed in; they travel at night when it's cooler and damper and sadly often get killed crossing roads. There is evidence that frogs and toads are breeding earlier, even in late winter months so start looking in February.

Become a phenologist!

This means keeping a record of when and where you see your first spring flowers, migrant birds, trees in leaf, frog spawn, first butterflies and dragonflies and other seasonal signs. Your records can help scientists who are studying climate change and its impact on wildlife. So start a wildlife diary today!

Woodlands carpeted in bluebells

One of the great Spring wildlife sights! In late April and early May bluebells are usually at their best so make sure you don’t miss this amazing Spring spectacle. A carpet of bluebells transforms woodlands into a place of magic and wonder.

Sow some wildflower seeds

Think local; by planting and growing some wild flower seed you can attract butterflies and bees to your garden. Take a look at our activity sheets on our website for tips on what to grow! Visit www.wildlifewatch.org.uk

New Alliance resource gets early years teams Ofsted-ready A new learning resource pack from the Pre-school Learning Alliance will empower early years teams to be prepared and confident ahead of an Ofsted inspection. The new SMARTpd resource pack, Managing your Ofsted Inspection, provides online resources for a manager or team leader to deliver an inhouse session which readies their team with confidence and knowledge in advance of Inspection day. A special 10 Parent Talk April 2018

20% discount is available for purchases made before 30 April using the code OFS from the Alliance shop: https:// shop.pre -school.org.uk/ T202/managing-your-ofstedinspection. The resource pack is designed to prompt discussion and increase understanding so teams know what will happen before, during and after the inspection; preparing them to act professionally and calmly during the inspection. The pack also contains

guidance and tips to prepare for the joint observation the Inspector may carry out on the day with a senior staff member, including an Ofsted quiz and a joint observation record template. The resource will help managers ensure everyone at the setting understands their individual responsibility for the inspection, knows to keep the child in focus, is familiar with relevant documents, and is ready to talk about, for example, safeguarding,

how the Early Years Pupil Premium is used and how an understanding of British Values is developed in the children. Michael Freeston, Director of Quality Improvement, said: “When children are happy, safe and learning to their fullest potential and settings are running efficiently and effectively, the Ofsted Inspection is a chance to show off all the exciting learning happening and how well everything is done. “This new Alliance resource

pack helps empower the early years team to be confident and knowledgeable in advance of their Ofsted Inspection. It provides a cost-effective way for managers to ready their staff to ensure the best possible outcome. It is another valuable addition to the wide range of resources in the Alliance SMARTpd portfolio.” SMARTpd SMARTpd offers a free consultation to help providers choose training specific to the needs of their staff. Supporting all practitioners to improve their

practice should be a continual process rather than a single goal demonstrated by a qualification or certificate. To address this challenge, SMARTpd provides Alliance-approved Continuing Professional Development resources. Certificated internally and with external organisations, the resources assure access to trustworthy sources of professional development with an option to earn certification to display in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) log or setting.

Healthy Living Week Starting Reception this September? at All Hallows school Although every week at All Hallows school is underpinned by a healthy living programme, the school recently enjoyed a ‘Healthy Living Week’ to highlight a broader range of issues. Pupils are already incredibly active and enjoy being outdoors, whatever the weather, but by having a specific focus week the staff were able to focus on key aspects of addressing a healthier life style and engaged all members of the school community. The week started with a bit of good old-fashioned pedal power on a smoothie bicycle; there was a very enthusiastic crowd who volunteered to pedal furiously, whilst creating a delicious smoothie at the same time. The Life Education mobile classroom was based in school for 3 days and provided a centre for discussion on diet and exercise and how the body works. The menu for the week, included Meat Free Monday and Sugar Free

Potato planting

Thursday. Year 6 pupils milled their own wheat, baked their

own bread, and then enjoyed eating their produce. Year 7 pupils were given a talk on sustainable farming and launched their own potato growing project and the whole school were able to take part in ‘wake and shake’ and yoga. Dr Richards, All Hallows’ Head led a Resilience Day for older pupils, helping them to develop communication skills and further a positive mind-set. Dr Richards commented “Positive psychology is founded on the notion of the potential of all of us and the positive aspects of human life, such as happiness and wellbeing. It centres on fostering mental health, draws on what is strong in a person, rather than what is wrong and emphasises positive personal strengths, rather than focusing on areas of current weakness. Healthy Living Week here at All Hallows drew together many aspects of being healthy from the physical and psychological and all the children benefitted from this fun-filled and educational, active week”.

Not just an exam factory

Cash-strapped parents raiding their children’s piggy banks to combat rising cost of living Parents are being forced to dip into their children’s piggybanks and savings accounts to supplement dayto-day living costs, a new study has found, as generous parents and grandparents are now giving children more than ever. The survey of 5,000 parents found that a fifth (19%) of parents have borrowed money from their children’s bank accounts in order to pay for wider costs, with nearly half (49%) doing so to cover the household bills. Reflecting the strain rising costs are having on the household budget more broadly, almost a fifth of those parents had borrowed money to cover the cost of groceries, whilst a sixth had done so in order to cover childcare. The findings form part of the latest Parentdex report from comparethemarket.com on pocket money. The report, which looks at the spending habits of children in the UK, found that children today receive an average of £23 a month - giving them £276 to spend every year, and – collectively - a spending power of £3.9 bn. In addition to the regular pocket money pay-outs, the survey also revealed that

children’s saving accounts are relatively healthy too, with the average child having a significant £982.50 stashed away in savings. A fifth of children have savings worth £2,000. This could be down to the fact that, for children, pocket money is not their only source of income. Indeed, on top of their usual allowance, four fifths of parents admitted to giving their child extra money to cover unforeseen requests, such as new clothing or nights out with friends. These ad hoc requests are not infrequent either, with almost a fifth of parents topping up their child’s pocket money once a fortnight, and over a quarter admitting to giving these extra handouts once a month. Meanwhile, the Bank of Gran and Grandad appears to be another fruitful source of income for kids, with almost a quarter of grandparents contributing to the pocket money that parents pay their children. More popular though are ad hoc payments, with over two thirds of grandparents giving their grandkids generous handouts as and when they see them. Unsurprisingly, children in the capital are the recipients of the highest amount of pocket money compared to anywhere

else in the UK, with the average parent in London giving £29 to their child each month. This contrasts to children in the East of England who are given £19 a month and those in the South West who are given £20. Fortunately, the parents polled also indicate a marked confidence amongst Mums and Dads in their children’s ability to manage their money effectively, with almost three quarters believing that their children will be well equipped to handle money as they approach adulthood. In the absence of financial education at schools, this could be down to discussions at home, with nine in 10 stating that they have talked about financial management with their children.

The survey of 5,000 parents found that a fifth (19%) of parents have borrowed money from their children’s bank accounts in order to pay for wider costs... Despite this though, parents do clearly feel that their children would benefit from additional teaching in schools - four fifths of those polled thought that schools should do more to teach financial education. Jody Coughlan, Money Manager, comparethemarket. com said: “Fortunately for kids, the wider squeeze on the household budget seems to have had little impact on the generous amounts parents wants to give their children. That said, parents do need to ensure that they are able to give their kids this pocket money, without needing to dip into it to cover wider household bills.” “It’s incredibly encouraging however to see the number of parents who are willing to talk to their children about financial management from such an early age. Not only will this do more to prepare them for financial responsibility in the long run, but it should also help to lessen their long-term dependence on the Bank of Mum and Dad as a result! Favourably, our research shows that children have an average of £982.50 in their savings account, which puts children in good stead for the future.” To read more about UK parents’ attitudes to pocket money, visit https://www. comparethemarket.com/ money/content/parentdex-4/.

Starting school advice from Exciting opportunities Queen’s College Pre-Prep await at Wellington School What do parents look for when choosing their child’s first school? (writes Samantha Horner, Head of Queen’s College Pre-Prep). As the parent of a child who is about to take her first steps into school life, my main focus is for my daughter to feel excited about starting school, engaged with the transition activities into Reception and happy and safe in the new setting. At Queen’s College PrePrep we recognise that a caring, nurturing, supportive environment is critical to a child’s educational success in the early years. Our small classes ensure consistency and offer an engaging, positive learning environment where every child is respected as an individual. I never cease to be amazed at the remarkable level of learning our children achieve in their Reception year, and the high standards they achieve ensure they are well prepared for their move into Key Stage One. A broad and balanced curriculum delivered in an exciting and tailored way ensures all children fully participate and enjoy their learning.

In a recent parental questionnaire, our Reception parents commented that Queen’s College Pre-Prep “… provides a safe and comfortable environment in which our child is thriving”; offers “ … a wide range of activities and my child feels happy to participate without pressure”; “… makes

my child feel nurtured and supported”; “ … goes above and beyond what is expected”; “ … gives the children the opportunity to express themselves”. We are delighted to be delivering the wonderful experience any parent would want for their child.

Whispers of Hope By Charlie Albert Published by Whispers Publishing Six shocking stories, based on actual events are about the lies, deception and manipulation some parents will go to in order to get their own way, be that for money or to stop a partner seeing their child. Names and some details have been altered but the outcomes in court are true. When relationships end there comes a time of transition. It would be nice to think that parents of young children would put the child first and above everything else, after all it is not the child’s fault that the marriage/relationship has come to an end. All too often the child becomes a pawn in the battle between the two parties who are caught up in such bitterness and anger. ‘Whispers of Hope’ has been written by Charlie Albert to inspire those parents out there, to whom all seems lost. They have no money but neither do they have the knowledge of the court system to help them through the Family Court to enable them to get a fair hearing. At last, here is someone who can help and advise them.

She’ll also share poignant, life-changing moments from her first year, such as her older son heading off through the school gates for the first time.

British parents turn to social media for parenting advice A brand-new study has revealed that British parents do not always go straight to the doctor when they have a concern over their child’s health, with the majority choosing to get advice from social media instead. It was also uncovered that just under half of these participants had uploaded images of their children’s injury or illness to their social media pages. The team at www. VoucherCodesPro.co.uk polled 2,354 UK-based adults, all of whom revealed prior to the survey that they had at least one child six years old or younger. Participants were also required to have at least one active social media channel. Initially all respondents were asked, “Have you ever been accused of oversharing on social media?” to which two fifths of the parents questioned admitted that ‘yes’ they had. Wanting to find out more about their social media habits as a parent, researchers asked all participants if they posted much about their children; it was found that 79% of respondents posted something about their child ‘at least once a day’. What’s more, 82% of those accused of oversharing confessed it was with

regards to sharing too much about their child. When asked what it was they were most likely to overshare, the top responses were ‘my child’s achievements’ (41%), ‘my child’s feeding habits’ (15%) and ‘my child’s toilet habits’ (13%). Furthermore, individuals were asked if they had ever asked for parenting advice on social media and, if they had, what kind of advice it was. Almost all respondents (91%) admitted that ‘yes’ they had turned to social media to ask for some sort of advice at least once. The most common advice topics included ‘health’ (68%), ‘punishment’ (54%) and ‘school’ (39%). Those respondents who said they had asked for parental advice on social media regarding health were asked if they had done so before consulting a doctor, to which two thirds said that this was true. When asked why it was they asked for advice on social media first, the majority said it was due to having ‘immediate access’ to the advice from fellow parents which would take time to get from a doctor, whereas one in five felt it ‘wasn’t serious enough to go to a doctor for’. Of the respondents who had asked for health advice for their child on social media

channels, just under half of those admitted they had also uploaded images of their child’s illness, injury or symptoms. Finally, respondents were asked whether the issue was resolved by asking for advice via social media; one quarter said it was, whereas the remaining three quarters had still turned to a doctor or pharmacist for advice. George Charles, spokesperson for www. VoucherCodesPro.co.uk commented: “Social media platforms are incredibly powerful and can be really helpful for parents; there’s a good chance friends

5

and relatives with their own children will have experienced what you’re going through at one point or another, so can at least offer advice and guidance on what to do. The issue is when parents solely rely on social media to tell them how to parent – this can be damaging for a myriad of reasons, but mainly because your social media followers aren’t experts, particularly when it’s a health issue. “If you’re ever truly worried about the health of your child, do not waste time uploading pictures that may embarrass them in the future, instead seek advice from a medical professional.”
