These Are Not Your Mama’s Summer Camps!

hen I was growing up, summer camp, for all its delighting diversions, was pretty much a one-size-fits-most experience: classic crafts (God’s eyes, leaf impressions and really bad tie-dye couture), cabincleaning contests (so gullible!) and an “everybody participates, everybody wins” policy that roped all campers, however reluctant (read: me), into obligatory activities such as singing in the round, archery and skits. But today’s kids have it made when it comes to camps, with an almost overwhelming number of offerings tailored to all types and tastes. For parents already spinning too many plates, navigating this plethora of options can feel overwhelming. Enter ParentMap’s Summer issue, our indispensable annual guide to planning the

perfect seasonal fun for each and every one. We’ve wrangled up some above-average horse camps that will set your budding equestrian off on the right trail (p. 9). The UW Robinson Center for Young Scholars offers a variety of math, science, literature, philosophy, and writing classes for children in grades 5-10. Our academic programs provide an intensive, inspirational and in-depth learning experience that is renowned in the region. In Summer Challenge, children explore a variety of adventurous topics such as the physics of roller coasters, astronomy, architecture, and creative writing. The supportive collaborative learning environment is one that children remember for a lifetime. Summer Challenge (5th – 6th grade) emphasizes hands-on learning, ﬁeld trips, and activities. Its goal is to provide motivated students with an intensive, hands-on, fun educational experience in areas outside of the traditional school curriculum. The program runs from July 8th – 26th, ﬁve days a week from 9:00AM – 2:20PM. There is also an After-Class program available from 2:20 - 4:30PM. There will be some homework, because of the breadth and depth of material covered. Registration opens March 1st at 8:00 am.

SUMMER STRETCH

Summer Stretch (7th – 10th grade) is more academic in nature, providing an accelerated, rigorous learning experience. The Summer Stretch program is characterized by high-level thinking, intellectual adventure, and pursuit of understanding. The program offers both condensed self-paced courses (e.g. Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Precalculus, Chemistry) and courses for enrichment (e.g. American Literature, Debate, Physics of Robotics). What all of these courses provide is an in-depth, intensive learning experience. The program runs from June 24th – July 25th, three days a week from 9:00AM - 2:20PM. Students must be committed to a substantial homework load; courses are graded and ﬁnal transcripts are provided. Registration opens Feb 1st at 8:00 am.

RC ONLINE

RC Online (9th – 12th grade) is a new accelerated learning opportunity, bringing advanced college-prep curriculum to an online platform for high school students. RC Online provides an inspiring, expansive educational experience as a window into what college-level work will be like; to move students rapidly from novice to advanced writers, readers and thinkers via speciﬁc skills, practices and tools. Top tips for finding the right horse camp By Nancy Schatz Alton

dding horses to the itinerary introduces a whole new level of inquiry when it comes to choosing a summer camp experience for your child. That’s why we wrangled experts and parents of horse-loving kids to get their pointers on picking the perfect equestrian camp. Along the way, we found out why families are thankful for the lessons learned from structured time spent with these majestic animals. Horse camp can lead to rewards beyond horse handling and riding experience, says Christina Wilsdon, author of “For Horse-Crazy Girls Only: Everything You Want to Know About Horses” and mother to a now grown daughter who was smitten with horses as a child. “Being horsecrazy gave Sophie an interest that sustained her during the turbulent years of adolescence,” says Wilsdon of her daughter. She notes that attending and then working at horse camp imparted skills that helped her daughter in all areas of her life. Sophie Wilsdon seconds her mother’s opinion. “I learned about deadlines and responsibility, how to treat animals and people with respect, and that hard work pays off,” she says. Whether your child has a budding interest in horses or is ready for an immersive seven-day, all-horses-all-the-time camp experience, Wilsdon recommends that parents research options carefully. Here’s her checklist, chockfull of horse sense: • Make sure the instructors are experienced. Find out how many years the camp or stable has been in operation. Ask if the camp’s instructors are parentmap.com/summer

certified by an accrediting organization, such as the Certified Horsemanship Association (cha-ahse.org). • Kids should learn about horses on the ground first, adjusting to being in the horse’s presence before they attempt to ride. • Horses 101 should be part of camp, imparting

that will work for your child, whether that means a horse-centric experience or a camp that furnishes a mix of activities alongside directed equestrian time. Here’s a roundup of camps that come highly recommended by experts, parents and campers alike.

Camp Sealth (Vashon Island) campfireseattle.org Camp basics: Camp Sealth offers eight one-week sessions of horse camp and teaches Western riding, with beginner, intermediate and advanced programs. Age ranges vary by session, but are generally open to grades 4–11; sessions can accommodate campers with mild to moderate disabilities, too. Riding instruction includes arena lessons, ground lessons and trail rides. Day or overnight camp: Overnight camp. Horse facts: Horse time comprises about 50 percent of the total activity time each day, with two hours of riding and two hours more for grooming, feeding, ground lessons and chores. Each camper is assigned a horse for the week. Price range: Short week (four-day session) starts at $460 with rates increasing from there.

The barn should be tidy and smell pleasantly of hay and horses. The animals should appear friendly, curious and contented. Lastly, find a camp with an activity balance

What makes it different: Kids and parents love this horse camp because it offers a balance of horseback riding and other camp activities. Kids get a chance to develop a personal relationship with their horse, learning from and bonding with the animal throughout the week. Campers also get a chance to experience the whole horse-care experience, including feeding, chores, grooming and ground lessons. What makes it different: This camp balances time and instruction between horses and art. Its natural horsemanship approach starts on the ground and works its way onto the saddle. Campers acquire safety skills and learn to ride with lightness, balance and confidence. The goal of the art program is to help young people express their creativity through different mediums, styles and materials.

No experience is required, and special programs are offered for advanced riders. Most camps include a riding show for campers’ parents on the last day of camp. Price range: From $105 for a three-day Mommy and Me Pony Camp up to $1,750 for a two-week overnight camp. What makes it different: At Lang’s, it’s all about horses. What makes it different: Horsemasters participants experience the magic of camp on horseback, exploring forest trails with their trusty equine friend. In addition to time at the barn, campers participate in traditional Camp Orkila activities (like swimming in Puget Sound) as a part of the Horsemasters unit. So, You Want Your Kid to Speak a Second Language

An abridged atlas to summer language camps By Jonathan Shipley

his summer, take a pointer from the polyglot (and apparently ultra-soulful) “Father of Europe” and enroll your kids in a language camp. They’ll be having so much fun, they won’t even know they’re learning! It’s good for them Science has proven time and again how learning a second language benefits a child. Learning another language boosts problem-solving, critical-thinking and listening skills, in addition to improving memory, concentration and the ability to multitask. Children proficient in other languages also show signs of enhanced creativity and mental flexibility. Moreover, kids who learn a second language have improved reading, writing and math skills, and generally perform better on standardized tests. And, finally, there is an empathy advantage: Children exposed at an early age to other languages display more positive attitudes to the cultures associated with those languages. What are my options? In the Seattle area, there is a plethora of language and culture camps.

Kids can have fun learning such diverse tongues as Arabic, French, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and others. Most camps cater to each student’s existing knowledge of the language. If a camper is already proficient in Spanish, they’ll be spoken to in Spanish. If they are new to the language, the camp staff will adjust to each student’s level of aptitude. How do you find the right camp for your child? First, meet with camp staff. Ask them about the curriculum and what aspects of the language’s culture they’ll explore. If you’re fluent in the language yourself, use it while interviewing the staff. Here is a limited list of some Seattle-area camps. And who knows? When summer is over, your children may just tell you “Thank you,” “Gracias,” “Merci” or “Danke sehr.”

MULTIPLE LANGUAGES

One World Now (oneworldnow.org) offers summer language camps in Arabic, Chinese, Korean and Russian. The language and culture camps focus on fostering language acquisition, intercultural understanding and a desire for international travel. Students learn through classroom activities, guest speakers, music and field trips. The last day of camp features student performances in a culminating showcase for classmates, family and friends. ► ParentMap Summer 2019 • 15

Sponge School (spongeschool.com) offers camps in Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese, Japanese, German and French. Camp themes include “Cooking Around Latin America,” “The Secrets of the Maya,” “Tales of the Monkey King” and others. Campers range in age from preschoolers through fifth-graders and are grouped according to age and ability. Asian Pacific Language School (apls.org) offers classes in Mandarin Chinese and Japanese. Cultural activities include Asian arts, cooking, counting, music, painting, games and more. There are afternoon field trips to neighborhood parks and farms, and weeks are themed (for example, “Food Week,” “Stories and Legends” and “Summer in Asia”).

DANISH

Himmelbjerget Danish Camp (nwdanishcamp.com) offers a unique opportunity for kids ages 10–18 to learn about the history, people, culture, language and traditions of Denmark. There is also a camp for younger children, Little Tivoli Day Camp, for kids ages 3–10.

FRENCH

Alliance Française de Seattle (afseattle.org), based at the Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford, is one of the Seattle area’s leading French cultural and learning centers. In addition to classes offered

all year long for kids and adults, it also has themed summer camps, all in French. This year’s camp themes include “Tropical Paradise” and “Zoo.” Up in the San Juan Islands, un petit peu of France can be found on a 47-acre private island. Canoe Island French Camp (canoeisland.org) was founded in 1969. Attendees at the sleepaway camp learn French and about France’s culture, and participate in traditional summer camp activities such as kayaking, theater, archery, sailing, marine biology and fencing. On the Eastside, the French Immersion School of Washington Summer Camp (fisw.org) offers five weeklong sessions that engage different aspects of a child’s imagination, using visual arts, storytelling, theater, science, music and movement. The camp is conducted in French, but previous French-language experience is not required.

ABC Sommerprogramm, presented by Seattle’s ABC German School (abcgermanschool.com), are summer camps designed for children ages 3–10 to learn the German language through songs, games and play. Each week has its own theme, with crafts, songs and games to

SIGN LANGUAGE

Seattle Children’s Summer Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (seattlechildrens.org) provides summer fun for campers who use sign language as their primary mode of communication. Activities include swimming, art, playing outdoors, special guest visitors, games and more. All staff members are fluent in sign language.

Seattle Amistad School (seattleamistadschool.org) offers 10 weeks of Spanish-immersion enrichment programming. The campers learn about the wonders of the Pacific Northwest through its arts, cultures and ecoregions. Activities include art projects, science experiments, field trips, yoga, dance and music. Camps and classes geared toward STEM — that’s science, technology, engineering and math — can help your kid stay sharp just as much as that summer reading program. Sure, school-year science classes may bore kids with all that memorization, but a science summer camp? Think hands-on exploration that kids do naturally. Got a kid who hates math? Nothing makes sums more fun than learning alongside fellow campers. Not only are STEM camps a perfect way to disguise summer learning as summer adventure, they can also ignite a lifelong passion for inquiry — and may even interest your child in a career field in which jobs are growing at a rate too fast to fill. That’s not bad for a summer camp. To help your family research options, we’ve gathered a few new and interesting offerings for summer 2019.

At Digivations Camp Demigod Institute (digivations.com), a sleepaway camp in Leavenworth, students choose among the worlds of Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, and multiple-fantasy mash-up themes. With Digivations’ NASA award-winning multidisciplinary curriculum, students engage in outdoor quests (which sometimes include robotics and sword fights). They also learn the science behind the magical elements they love — such as the chemistry behind potions or the principles of biomimicry as applied to the monster in their favorite book. emember when summer camp meant macramé, camp songs and s’mores? Well, welcome to summer camp 2019. Your kid could learn video production in order to start their own YouTube channel, or how to build up strength to conquer that next big rock-climbing challenge. Maybe they’ll use math to create miniature doll toys or design their own clothes, learn debate and research skills or take on a weeklong backpacking expedition. Our area is blessed with plenty of options, so we’ve done our best to pick six novel camps you may not have heard of.

UP FOR DEBATE Perfecting presentation and debate skills and building self-esteem take center stage at Capitol Debate’s Public Speaking and Debate Camp (capitoldebate.com). Hosted at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, this camp teaches kids how to structure arguments, research evidence, write rebuttal briefs, articulate ideas and be a more effective communicator. By the end of camp, students will be prepared to join their school’s debate or speech team, or participate in its Model United Nations activities. Camps for Kids With Special Needs Tips and camp options to ensure a great experience By Nancy Schatz Alton

hen I hugged my 6-year-old daughter goodbye on day two at day camp — knowing day one had not gone well — I hoped prepping the staff again would be enough. I’d spent the early morning hours talking her through ways to make camp bearable and extolling the camp’s merits. But the 10 a.m. phone call from a parent volunteer who discovered my child sitting alone and sobbing inconsolably beneath a tree revealed that I had failed at a very essential aspect of camp preparedness as a parent of a child with special needs: finding a camp that was capable of meeting my daughter’s specific needs. “The thing about finding camps for a special-needs kid is that every kid is completely different,” says Laura Stone, a West Seattle mom with a child who is on the spectrum. Her son has enjoyed attending Blue Compass Camp, which is specifically staffed and structured for kids with autism, Asperger’s syndrome and ADHD. She has also signed her son up for local camps that aren’t tailored for kids with special needs. But for these camps to work well for him, she says, the providers must be made aware of his unique needs in order to be able to adjust

and adapt to them effectively. Amy Hallmon, a West Seattle parent of five kids with special needs, concurs that clear communication with camp staff before day one is vital. “It’s not overkill to provide specific examples of potential behaviors and how you would deal with them — in writing as well as verbally, and more than once,” says Hallmon. “[During camp week] speak up if you see or hear something that doesn’t work. One of our kids needs an ‘escape spot’ when she becomes overwhelmed, and she can’t talk about it once she’s upset. For every camp activity, she needs a designated, safe calm-down spot — and to not be asked any questions.” Hallmon says it took several attempts to convey the concept to camp staff last summer, but her determined communication paid off, setting the foundation for an ultimately fulfilling experience for her daughter. On-staff medical personnel support campers as they participate in a wide range of adaptive recreational activities, including boating, archery, cycling, performing arts, outdoor education, and arts and crafts. While some camps target specific types of medical needs, Camp Korey’s general sessions serve kids with a variety of life-altering medical conditions. Ages: 7–16. Day or overnight camp: Overnight summer camps, family weekends throughout the year and day events. Cost: Free. Camp Patterson • everettwa.gov Camp basics: Run by the City of Everett, Camp Patterson invites all 7:20 PM campers, particularly those with developmental delays and physical challenges, to explore Silver Lake. This summer day camp experience includes swimming, kayaking, field trips, music, and arts and crafts. Through these activities, the day camp seeks to promote a positive self-image and teamwork among campers. Weekly camp sessions run from July through early August. Ages: 5–21. Day or overnight camp: Day camp. Cost: $125 per week with extended care available for an additional fee. Outdoors for All • outdoorsforall.org Camp basics: This fittingly named nonprofit foundation’s day camps ensure that youth of all abilities participate in outdoor sports and recreation. Campers try a range of sports, such as kayaking, rock climbing, cycling and swimming. In addition to athletic endeavors, campers partake in field trips to local zoos, parks, aquariums and other community excursions.
