Plano Parks & Recreation is pleased to offer another season of wholesome, funfilled recreational activities and programs to the Plano community . Throughout my life and career, I have grown to know that play, in all of its forms and fashions, is a powerful influencer for good. It helps promote social, physical and emotional balance and well-being, not just in childhood, but throughout all stages of life . Whatever one’s pleasure, play is an essential component for a rich, fulfilling and rewarding life.
Because Plano Parks & Recreation understands this, great care and consideration is taken in the provision of Plano’s recreation programs . The Fall Recreation catalog can serve as a guide to improving individual and familial health and wellness with its wide array of programs and classes . Whether trying something new, rediscovering the forgotten hobby, or looking to expand social circles, there are plenty of options for every member of the family inside this fall edition
The coming of fall also means the return of some of Plano’s favorite events (see Pages 2 and 83): Boo Bash at Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center on Oct . 26, the Holiday Market on Nov . 18-19, and Breakfast with Santa at Carpenter Park Recreation Center on Dec . 9 are some of my favorites, that I’m sure your family will enjoy, too so mark your calendars! But these are just some of the family-oriented events planned for this fall See more of what’s in store on page 25

In an effort to provide the best possible customer service to our patrons, we have chosen a new look for our aquatic class listings. This new format allows us the flexibility of adding additional classes as instructors become available, and always provide you the most up-to-date list of open courses.
We offer preschool through adult swim classes. Youth Swim starts at level 1 and goes through level 6, and all classes adhere to the American Red Cross guidelines for staffing ratios. Each section on the following pages provides a QR code with a complete list of available classes. If you don’t see a class that fits your schedule, check back with us as classes will be periodically added. If you find your desired class is full, we encourage you to put your child on the waiting list as we often are able to add several students from each list.
The objective of Preschool Swimming is to introduce young students to swimming and water safety. Each participant will be assessed on the first day of class and, when feasible, will be placed in the skill-appropriate group to promote comfort and success. Skill range will vary from first-time swimmers to independent swimmers, and instruction will be adapted to fit the needs of the group. Skills taught in this course include submersion, floating, gliding, breath control, rudimentary front crawl and back crawl, elementary backstroke kick, and dolphin kick.
This parent/child class provides instruction in basic water skills that increases confidence, coordination and safety in the water. A responsible adult is required to participate with their child in the water. Students will be in the water for approximately 30 minutes.

Learning how to swim is fun, but did you know this lifelong skill benefits children in many other ways? Becoming a good swimmer can also help improve your child’s strength and coordination, as well as their overall self-esteem.
Swim assessments are required for all swimmers who are new to the Plano Parks & Recreation system or those who have had more than one year between previous classes with the City of Plano. At no additional charge, participants may book a time online for a swim level assessment using the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program criteria. Participants must be at least six-years-old. Participants will be in the water independently for approximately 5-10 minutes and will be tested on their current knowledge of and ability to perform in-water skills such as front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, side stroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. This assessment does not guarantee registration spots for participants.
Level 1 is intended for children who are unfamiliar with or uncomfortable in aquatic environments. The objective of this course is to introduce students to the water and get them comfortable with the foundations of swimming. For successful completion of this level, students must demonstrate the ability to fully submerge and to propel themselves in the water on both their front and back unassisted by an instructor. The only prerequisite for this course is age.
The objective of Level 2 is for students to learn how to propel themselves on their front and back using alternating and simultaneous arm and leg action. For successful completion of this level, students must demonstrate front crawl with side breathing, the ability to rollover into back crawl, the ability to tread water, and rudimentary understanding of the elementary backstroke kick and dolphin kick, unassisted by an instructor. Prerequisites include ownership of a Level 1 certificate or the ability to demonstrate all skills required to pass Level 1.

Prerequisites include ownership of a Level 2 certificate or the ability to demonstrate all skills required to pass Level 2.
The objective of Level 4 is for students to improve their skills and increase their endurance in front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke. Students will learn the arms and coordination to breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke, basic turns at the wall, and safety assists. Additional diving, safety, and deep water skills are built upon. For successful completion of this level, students must demonstrate the ability to effectively complete 25 yards of front crawl, back crawl, and elementary backstroke, along with 15 yards of breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke. Prerequisites include ownership of Level 3 certificate or ability to demonstrate all skills required to pass Level 3.

A low-fat diet can help you maintain desirable cholesterol levels, but the convenience of fast food, hidden fats in many foods, and taste preferences make choosing low-fat, low-calorie foods difficult. If levels of LDL cholesterol are too high, or levels of HDL cholesterol are too low, fatty deposits build up in your blood vessels. These deposits will make it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries. This could cause problems throughout your body, particularly in your heart and brain, or it could be fatal. Learn what you need to know to take the actions you need to help protect yourself!

The student/coach ratio is 4:1 for all classes ages 5-10. The ratio is 6:1 for classes ages 11 and up. To avoid cancellation of a class, a class may “make” with less than the minimum number of students, but with a reduced number of sessions. Classes at the same level and similar age groups may be combined at the discretion of High Point staff. Any group of two or more players may schedule a private class by contacting High Point staff at 972-941-7170.
Group lessons are very popular and some classes fill very quickly. To assure a continuous chain of instruction, we recommend that students enroll for multiple sessions at the time of initial registration. For example, a student should enroll for a Beginner session in the first session, an Advanced Beginner I group in the second session, and an Advanced Beginner II group in the third session.
High Point participates year round in the QuickStart Tennis play format, a program designed to help children learn, rally, and play quickly. Using shorter and lighter racquets, balls that are easy to keep in play, and court dimensions tailored to smaller players, youngsters from ages 5-10 pick up the game very quickly. In a short time, young players are able to keep the ball in play and play points just like older and more experienced players. In time, as students’ games improve and as they mature physically, they move to traditional rackets, balls, and courts. QuickStart is a great way to introduce children to the great game of tennis.
$2 .50 per person per session
Adult (l8 & up) $3 00 per person per session
We encourage players to continue learning and playing in progressively more challenging courses. The goal is to have students playing tennis (in some form) as soon as possible.
