The four months of Semester one consisting of the courses of foundation and graphic design made me realise the importance of discipline, dersistance and dedication. The lesson that I’ve learnt is that there is more than the ‘what’ and ‘how’. It is the ‘why’; which is the most important one. The whole purpose of this document is to reflect upon my performance and my understanding of the course. Each course had a lot of things to take back. I’ve learned some important factors about design and I am trying to integrate those in my work. Coming from a Pixelised academic past, it was a different experience trying to cope up with the magnitude and direction of the vectors, but I think that was the challenge. Graphing out this curve has helped me to understand the progress and to plan for the future with a better judgement.

What is Design? We were introduced to design at the National Institute of Design by Ashoke Chatterjee. The importance of past and the depth at which we have to think was very effectively propogated through his experiences. He emphasised on the dire need of design intervention in rural areas. Sudhir Sharma, a working professional and a member of India Design Council instructed us to be true to yourself and your design. The intention, the process and the product all three things matter when it comes to a good design. The priorities that we need to set for ourselves have to come from a proper thought process. Not only your skills but also your ego and focus matters. The shortfilms by Gary Hustwit focused on the design qualities like form, symbolism, sustainibility. The most interesting line was Designers are culture generators.

Dignity. Service. Love. Meaning is an important part of design. Go beyond the brief. Observe everything closely. Right attitude is important. Identify your timber.

Rajesh Dahiya, an NID almni working as a professional graphic designer gave really important insights through his presentation. We must do more things than needed as needed. The attitude of the target audience plays a very different role in designing. Amit Gulati emphasised the importance of diversity. May it be diversity in your skills or your views, embrace diversity. Stay attentive and keep looking. Experience design and learn to live it.

We were instructed to express our thoughts on ‘What is Design’ As an open eyed newcomer to the new field of designing, this was my take on design. A point to be noted /9


The presentation and lecture by Krishnesh Mehta was grundbreaking for most of us. The very fact that our senses matter the most was overlooked by many of us. He explained the cross domain nature of design and how it can achieve actualization of abstract concepts. He made it point to tell us that research is the most impotant step in any design process. Design is about what you experience, what you reflect and how you reflect. Prasad Bidapa stressed upon the point that the Indianness in the design is unrecognisable. If there is such a thing as indian design, it should be transending throughout the globe but it is not happening. He concluded with a point that history is important, but if we keep living in it, we will not be creating one. The presentation by Aarti Shrivastava and V Sakthivel introduced us to the process of research and documentation, a major part of any design project. The commitment, team spirit and management contribute to the success of every design venture.

Think things that nobody thinks. Have an interest in everything. Design from ground up. Research. Design process is important. Be one of a kind.

The presentation by Rupesh Vyas was very interesting for me. I learned that one can go to any extent as a designer when we recognise the problem. The depth at which we have to work exceeds the general norms and then the process becomes much more than just a solution. The very detailed and layered documentation and strategic design helps not just to solve a problem but also to avoid the next. Uttam Pal Singh made it clear that any idea you have, no matter how irrational you think it is, can be realised. Engaging the target user with your creation is a very important quality in a good design.

Making a poster on any indian design was a very interesting task. I chose Kathakali colours as it is one of the oldest design traditions which uses complex compositions and simple colours for visual communication. A point to be noted /11

Reality Check The very first task inthe fundamentals of visual design course was to draw some very basic things and write an essay about why did you come to NID. The tree that I drew that day was more of a stylized tree rather than actual representation. The discussions about each and everyone’s drawing made us realise that it is important to refresh our knowledge and work hard. Ability to give a good visual representation of a concept is the basic need of a designer. We were going to develop this skill first, learning from the things around us. We were divided in 4 groups and were assigned a mentor. My group, group B had Mr. Sanjay Pande as our mentor.

Learning from People The study of human anatomy teaches us a lot about structure of any object and movement. We studied gesture drawing by keeping one of us as a model and capturing the gesture as quickly as possible. Studying the posture, the foreshortening, the light and shade and the proportions of a body helped me to understand and improve my perception about everything aruond me. We went for a morning sketching stroll and the experience of real life quick sketcheing improved my observation skills. and this helped me to portray the essence of a scene in shortest and fastest way possible.

Learning from Nature Nature is the best model to observe. The harmony and balance in nature taught me the structure and complexity of forms. A simple leaf study can teach you about form, line strength ,shadow and light, foreshortening, balance and much more. I studied different kinds of tress and their leaves to understand the interrelation of size, texture and form. As my mentor had said, this study of nature taught me to observe instead of just looking. There are so many details to one object that one can keep drawing and never stop. The study of textures opened my eyes and I started to notice textures of objects as well as their form.

Learning the Perspectives All the objects around us exist in three dimensions. Perception of height and depth is hence very important in visual design. We studied one point, two point perspectives and the theory behind it. The constant checking of our mentor helped me to understand and correct my mistakes. The concept of vanishing point visual perception clteared the doubts about how we percieve the third dimension put on a two dimensional plane. Demonstrations of visual measurement helped me to recreate the view in proportionate form on paper. We studied different percpestives by observing the objects we use everyday.

Visual Diary Visual diary was a group task in which we had to document the experiences and essence of a given location. I was the group leader and we got ‘Geeta Mandir’ as our location to study. Geeta mandir is an important part of Ahmedabad which has a bus station and the name is taken from a famous religious place ‘Geeta mandir’. We visited the place several times over the span of four days at different time of the day and tried to document various dimensions of the same place. As the group leader I had the responsibility to make sure that the task is cetting carried out perfectly. As the group consisted of 10 students from different disciplines and had different perception about the place, we presented the collection of our experiences as ‘Ten faces of Geeta Mandir’. Ten sections documented by ten students with ten differennt ideas. The concept of ten faces was very well recieved.

Colours The study of colours and composition was conducted in a very interactive way. We were introduced to different colour models,colour theory , Gestalt’s laws, association of colours, etc. We learned the colour terminologies sucha as value, tones, hue, saturation, brightness, shades, etc. We were supposed to pick a monochrome natural object and try to find as many colours as we can from the sample and make sample swatches. The experience of finding and matching the colours with the real colours was a tough but engaging task. I had picked up a section of a brken branch which had dominent brown with reddish tones. The most enjoyable part was the workshop of splatter exercise conducted for understanding the role colours play in perception of an abstract ideas and terms. I continued this expercise on my own and came up with a set of explorations which helped me to understand colours as well as their interrelation.

Basics of Composition Composition is a very important part of any design. How you put up things changes the way people look at it. We were given three topics, Friendship, Anger and Safety and we were told to compse 5 frames consisting of lines and dots as components depicting one of the themes. I chose to compose frmaes for Friendship. Friendship is about connection, it is about having common elemnts of interest, it is about being there for each other all he time and it is about sharing. I tried to portray these abstract ideas through my composition.

Composition on Paper Portarying a place in Ahmedabad through colours was a big task. We were give Bartan Gali as our location. The lane has the most number of utensils shops. And it is situated in the eastern i.e. old Ahmedabad. As per the schedule we went there in the morning for our visit. We had to grab the character of Bartan Gali through colours. The bartan gali in the morning was not at all what we had expected. It was dull. All the shutters were closed. The rusted pastle colours of the shutters and the old styled, faded colours of the buildings were giving a very different identity to the bartan gali. There was not a single open shop in the whole lane at 9.30 am. The absense of Bartans in bartan gali was very unsettling. We selected the colour of the moring sky, shades of the closed shutters, feel of the walls of the buildings and the absense of the shiny things in bartan gali as our inspiration and composed ‘Bartan Gali-The Morning Ragas’

Composition through People The most interesting part of this module was the composition skit. We had to prepare a skit on the topic of ‘Climate Change’. It was a group project with 25 students in a team. The objective of this task was to make us aware that composition exists beyond paper and pencil. The composition of people, cohesion of thoughts and harmonious execution of the theme also requires intense sense of composition. We decided to treat the whole drama with sarcasm. We were not going to tell people to stop polluting and start behaving in agood way, we would be encouraging the activities which lead to climate change and in the end, with a twist in the tale we’ll reveal the harsh reality. As the script writer and director of the play, I anchored the whole process. I understood the fact that there are more responsibilities to a director than just directing. The play was recieved very well.

Comparitive aesthetics Introduction to the term aesthetics and learning the gravity of the term from various cultural and philosophical aspects was an important event in this semester. The varied interpretations of aesthetics and the way poeple percieve it made me realise hoe much the contribution of the viewer or the user matters in the conception of a design. Art and design are different from each other in the sense of their functionality, but the aesthetic qualities of both of them remain consistent. The Rasa theory when talks about the aesthetic attitude and the basis of dream fabrication speaks of Dream symbolisation, they indicate the involvement of the viewer in the process. This module taught me to go beyond the written lines and poured out colours on the paper and try to find the meaning and intention. It is not about what the writer was meaning it is about the way you percieve it.

Ekla Chalo The assignment was to select any piece of art and write a critique about it. I selected the song ‘Ekla Chalo’. Ekla Chalo is an iconic Bengali Patriotic Song written by Rabindranath Tagore. The phenomenal song was used in commercial films recently and so the youth is quite familiar with it. I personally think that the text though given a theme of patriotism for centuries, speaks about personal triumph over social resistance. I decided to try and interprete what the song means to me. The very amusing thing about this song is that the song is perceived as a motivational song yet Tagore never talks about a bright future. I think the reason lies in the human tendency to look forward for brightness, metaphorical or literal. Just a slight indication of ‘Hope’ is enough to come out of the darkest place. . But still, I just couldn’t digest the concept of being unlucky for being different. Yes, the word ‘unlucky’. When I thought about it, I realised that the word unlucky does not mean ‘The one with a bad luck’ it should mean ‘The one who does not need any luck’. Those who believe in themselves never relay on other’s help but in fact help others to find their own path. Everything works out fine if you don’t give up! It’s never ‘Walk Alone’; it is always ‘Walk Independently’!

Design as a process We were introduced to design as a process through various presentations and case studies. The process of design development has several stages sucha as accept the situation, Analyse it, Define the problem, Ideate, Select a solution, Implement it and evaluate the results. The process of Discover, Define, Design and Deliver brings us to a more cohesive and inclusive design solution. In the mini-project of this module, we went through this process . The task was to identify an activity performed in NID campus and analyse it. We searched and shortlisted a lot of activities on campus which seemed very interesting to analyze. The activity of making Iced-Tea at BMW (canteen) was selected as it had a lot of shocking flaws in the process that we wanted to share with the fellow students.

Basics of Typography The first task of this module was to design a hand written self-portrait through typography. I decided to take the self-portrait literally, and started laying out the my information in a way that it would suggest a silhouette of my face. I tried this approach digitally, but the complex detailing was not possible for me to do, so I decided to keep the silhouette theme and add different things inside the outline. We discussed the way the layout was done, the choice of colours and their placements and many more details. We had discussions through presentation about classification and history of Typefaces. I got to know about serifs, sans serifs, type-heights, Cap-heights, X-heights, Leading, descenders, ascenders, counter-forms, basically all the terms then unknown. We observed the changes that took place in the very concept of a character through its form and shape and how it makes difference in a communication strategy. The weight, the size, the style, the orientation, everything matters.

Letterpress We went to visit the Print Labs and Sachinbhai along with Tarun, introduced us to Types, and the Case. We observed the structure of a type and recalled the information about type-measures that we learned in the morning. We got to know some simple gimmicks put in the type to make the job of a typesetter easy, like the groove and specific arrangement of alphabets and other characters in the case. We had an assignment to print our own layout using letterpress. After finalising the layout, we Composed it ina tray and printed it under supervision of Sachinbhai. I learned the working strategy and techniques involved in letterpress.

Expressive Characters We started with our Assignment 1. We circulated a sheet of paper with the names of everyone in our class and every other person had to attach an adjective to that. After getting the final list, we finalised on One adjective for each person. I had to write ‘Ayushi Medatwal’ in such a way that it will project ‘Talkativeness’. Finally I found a contemporary typeface named ‘Le Chatte a momon’. I explored various layouts, with repetition, without repetition and finalised the one which had the text at various positions parallel to the horizontal base of the given area in varying sizes. The whole composition has a feel of rhythmic movement and hence it was done.

Emphasis Making The second assignment was something different. We did not have the privilege to select a typeface and we were given a text with 2 to 3 lines. My Text was in Devnagari. I chose devnagari because I had no idea how can one create a layout with words and a unit and not separate alphabet. In devnagari script, if you separate out the characters from a word, it looks wrong and distracting at times. Devnagari scrip and Hindi language. We were not supposed to change the physical hierarchy of the given text but create a logical hierarchy through typography which will impart the meaning of the text. I found out that re-emphasizing the text in different manner will enhance the impact on the reader. I tried different layouts with different levels of hierarchy.

Meaning Making The next level of the on-going assignment reduced some constraints and added more difficulties. We were given one more typeface with three different weights and we were supposed to create a layout similar to the one from the last part but change the hierarchy. This was difficult to do than I thought it would be because more options you get, more and more confused you get while taking a decision. The new typefaces had some thick and thin strokes which were lacking from the previous one. I observed all the sample texts thoroughly before actually starting the work. Each typeface was giving a different level of impact or force to the text. I observed that changing the font in the same layout changes the level of effectiveness of the layout. I was able to understand the importance of perfect selection of typeface, appropriate selection of the size and weight and need of creating a layout which serves the cause.

Contextual Layout After completing the sentence level assignments we moved on to paragraph level. We were given a text about “What to do before and during an earthquake� I opted to do a booklet for it. The size of the font, the style of the font, the way you place your titles decide the reading sequence. Addition of colours makes it even more critical as conflicting decisions about the colour and the layout will distract the reader from the information, which is not expected. We should be able to create exact amount of contrast so that the reader will get the correct hierarchy and will not be overwhelmed.

Letter Integration Ι Form is avery strong tool to convey a message. Form is an easy visual stiluli to which we react to. Creation and use of a good form is very important in graphic design. We recalled the basics of gestalt’s laws and the phenomonon of visual perception. To actualise this knowledge, we started our first assignment. The task was to integrate two letters to create a good form. We took the initials of our name as the letters. We had references of the same letter in different fonts. I understood how forms imerge from very simple basic forms. The visual perception of the viewer should be taken into consideration. The form should be clean and there should not be any difficulties in perception of that form. Forms should have a specific hierarchy of emphasis.

Letter Integration ІІ Continuing with the same assignment, we selected a letterform and a number and we were supposed to integrate those two. I selected B and 3. These two have very similar forms and I wanted to make sure that I can integrate those two while keeping their indentities intact. I’ve understood that the process of form creation is in-exhaustive. I understood the gravity of the work that graphic designers do while creating a visual entity. The thought behind each form along with its aesthetic value matter.

object abstraction The assignment of image abstraction emphasised on the process of image simplification. We were to select any object of our choice and take it as a visual reference and attach different emotions to it. The objective of this assignment was to create an association of an emotion with an object. I selected my headset as my object. The movable earpieces allowed me to explore various moods projecting from the posture of the object. The position I chose reflected Ignorance. I took the photograph of that position as a reference and created a simplified image of the object. After a number of simplifications and modifications, I understood how minimalistic and expressive image can be. The final outcome is presented as a poster to project the importance of Acceptance.

creation of an icon Icons are the most minimalistic and most informatie images. An icon can actually communicate better than text. We were instructed to recognise a situation or a place which needed some visual aid. While I was working on my personal weaving project, I had gone to buy yarn from ‘Gheekanta’, a place in Ahmedabad whi has a huge fabric related market. The whole area was very unorganised and I felt a dire need of an Icon for this area. As Gheekanta is a huge area and it is not possible to create an icon for such a large area, I proposeda signage system for that area. The specific parts of Gheekanta are centers for specific trading. These sections mainly include Thread market, Sewing Machine market, Spare part and repairing, Unstiched cloth section and Stiched clothes section. I have worked on the first part of the system I’ve proposed, The Thread Market.

All you need to know is this. This module was specifically designed to introduce and motivate us about a very important part of Graphic Designing, Production Process. We studied various methods involved in Pre-Press, Printing Methods, Post-Press activities. We studies the techniques used in preparation of screen and plate for screen printing and offset printing. The importance of colour correction and the methods to do it. The colour models, paper types, types of inks and methods of book binding. Industry Visit We had an industry visit to ART-O-PRINT which produces packaging for medical products. The activities we observed there include Positive making for offset Four colour Offset Printing Die-Cutting Creasing Folding Paper cutting We observed the methods of sutting, gluing of corrugated sheets in the visit to the industry producing corrugated boxes. These bosex are made up of recycles papers.

Hands-on Experience The classroom project was to design and print a poster using offset and screen printing methods. We decided to do screen overprinting on offset printed poster to observe the various permutation and combinations of the results. We studied different binding methods and we actually got to go through the process inthe Print Lab at NID. ALPAVIRAMA 2014 I got the opportunity of working on the live project of designing and production of the catalogue for ‘ALPAVIRAMA 2014, The South Asian Short Film and Dicumentary Film Festival’ organised by the department of Film and Video Communication, NID. I worked with Taun Deep Girdhar, Senior Graphic Design Faculty and Nagesh Lakhan, a fellow learner. I worked in the process of designing and finilising the layout. As the catalogue was to printed in grayscale, I had to convert all the photographs from their respective colour modes to grayscale and colour correct them as needed. The process of putting the information in the spread also helped me to understand the role of a proof reader in the production process. This project has helped me to understand the role of a graphic designer in publication process.

float processing(); Exploring various aspects of visual imagery through ‘Processing’ has helped me to achieve a perfect balance between implementation of technical knowledge and expression through art. Processing gives us a way to design interactive environments. The very surreal nature and the precise placements of the elements in a design make the visual very interesting. Use of this platform in interaction and new media design has proven its immense capability to materialise and interpret complex ideas through data visualization.

As I was working my way through processing, I decided to make a booklet based on my experiences at NID. This process of making the booklet has boosted my self-confidence tremendously. The process of writing the text, editing it, finilising it, refining it and then starting with concepts for the layout was a very good experience. I was writing my experiences and relating them to the expressions through generative art.

Logo design competition The logo design conpetition for the ‘Mahatma Gandhi Swachhta Mission’ was announced on 17th July and the deadline was 24th July. The brief was to design a logo for the mission adapting the thought of ‘zero waste’. GUDC announced the goal of making major gujarat cities ‘zero waste cities’ by 2019 and for that a logo had to be designed. The adjoining entry was shortlisted for final selection. Results are awaiting. I tried to interprete the concept of ‘Kalpavriksha’ (The coconut tree), as a zero waste model through the design. The earlier version had a play with gestalt and it was not easily percievable. I further simplified the form and the type to make it more cohesive.

Weave the way In the interdisciplinary environment of NID, I’ve had many opportunities to witness different processes from different fields. Inspired by the fellow designers from the textile department I started studying the techniques of weaving. Being very enthusiastic but unable to get hands on a proper loom, I designed and made my own ‘Frameloom’. The whole experience of creating my own loom and successfully weaving on it was very satisfying. I tried different kinds of weaves on my loom and I understood the hardwork the textile design students do. I got to know the basic terminologies in textile designing. I plan to continue this venture as it helps me to understand the complexities of composition.
