What to expect at PaperWeek Canada

PaperWeek Canada, the number one gathering of the pulp & paper and forest products industry in Canada, will be held Feb. 1-5 2016 at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal.

Furthermore, the event will be held jointly with another major event – Montreal BIOFOR International – a new conference launched by PAPTAC, dedicated to the emerging Forest Bioeconomy.

Under the theme “Global Knowledge Connections”, the Program Committee is putting together a world-leading program covering the key aspects of forest products advancement. Household tracks are going to continue to lead the conference with complete programs on Packaging (TechPack), Tissue (Tissue Masters), Safety, Management, Energy and Reliability, as well as new segments on Market Pulp (PulpEx) and the Converting Industry.

PaperWeek has been steadily growing in the past couple of years, reaching a record attendance of 1150 attendees of the past three years and participation is expected to increase even more in 2016.

With an impressive roster of world-renowned keynote speakers, technical sessions and special symposia, PaperWeek will present a comprehensive program of 40+ sessions, and continue to host the PaperWeek Tradeshow which be held of three days and the prestigious PAPTAC National Awards. 12

PAPTAC National Awards National Awards for business leasdership, research & technical papers

The PAPTAC Business Awards recognize excellence in specific management areas and provide an opportunity to promote the highest levels of business leadership in the Canadian pulp & paper and forest-based industry. This recognition is awarded on the largest National platform during PaperWeek Canada, organized by PAPTAC. Mill Managers Breakfast Roundtables The Mill Managers Roundtables have become a key component of PaperWeek, an event several mill managers look forward to to exchange on a number of issues with their counterparts. It had grown into a dynamic forum and a unique opportunity to get news ideas, learn from different management cultures and benchmark best practices. The Mill Managers Roundtables will be led by Eric Ashby, General Manager at Domtar Windsor. They will take place Tuesday and Wednesday Feb 2 and 3 – from 7:00 to 9:00 am. Topics this year will be focused on Health & Safety, Management of change, and Troubleshooting Methodology.

CEO keynote/opening panel In an interactive concept, company CEOs and key executives from North American companies who have actively engaged in forest biorefinery-derived products will discuss reasons why and the strategies they implemented to adapt their business model to fully seize emerging bioeconomy opportunities.

Biorefinery Track The Biorefinery track will serve as a high-quality forum to improve the know-how of mills capable of developing biorefineries and promote the green attributes of forest biorefinery, that will prove critical for chemical companies and other downstream sectors who may utilize this process toward end-user products. Its high-level business orientation will set the stage to facilitate the connection between the sectors involved.

Government Policy Session In an interactive concept; key International, Federal or provincial government policy-makers will discuss their current or upcoming policy, programs and other measures undertaken to stimulate the implementation of forest-derived bioeconomy projects within their jurisdictions. Engineering Session: “Lessons learned when implementing first-in-kind forest bioproduct projects” In an interactive concept, experts from engineering firms will highlight some of the unexpected challenges and distinctive aspects they encountered when implementing first-in-kind forest bioproduct technologies.

Federal R&D Activities and Services for Forest Biorefinery Development in Canada This panel will provide an overview of Natural Resources Canada (CanmetENERGY), FPInnovations and National Research Council research activities and services in support of forest biorefinery development in Canada.

Biomaterials in Canada With the world economy looking towards biomaterials for potential and growth, technical experts with practical experience will talk about the knowledge they developed while implementing biomaterial projects. They will discuss what motivated their company to pursue a new biomaterial product; what lessons they took from similar projects (in Canada or the world); how they rationalized the project in order to get support for investments and how they prepared for market takeoff. Additional sessions on Bioenergy, as well as a Financial Experts Panel on Access to capital and how do you finance; a forest sector transformation.
