and Frederick Church (1826–1900), worked on the island and emphasized the visual drama of mountains rising from the sea, the intimacy of folded hills and coves, the power of the waves, and—by way of contrast—the puny scale of man gauged in this setting.17 Their works of art, exhibited in galleries or reproduced in books and magazines, made Mount Desert known to a wide circle of people, who were fascinated by its dramatic setting.
