2022-2023 CALENDAR SOMERSET SCHOOL DISTRICT

DISTRICT LEADERSHIP

Welcome to the 2022-2023 School Year

Hello Spartan Family!

I am Shannon Donnelly, the very proud District Administrator of the amazing Somerset School District. I have been in this position since July, 2022. Prior to that, I held a variety of leadership positions in the Somerset School District including High School Principal (5 years) and Director of Pupil Services (5 years). I am filled with Spartan Pride and beyond excited to kick off the 22-23 school year.

Students, families, and schools have had to navigate a lot over the last three years. Somerset was no exception to that. Nothing will go back to how it “used to be’’ and we now have a new normal. What a great time to hit the reset button and come together as a school and greater community. We believe that strong schools are vital to ensuring a strong community and that students are at the center of everything we do; our why. There is no better time than right now to work together and continue to make Somerset a premier school district and community that all stakeholders can be proud of!

We pride ourselves in our commitment to our mission of the district: “Together we engage, educate, & empower all learners; bridging their passions to pathways to create successful futures and positively contribute to our local and global communities.” In order for this to come to life for each and every student, we have to create a learning environment in all of our schools that fosters inclusivity, diversity, innovative thinking, risk-taking, collaboration, communication, self-advocacy, and relevant, real-world problemsolving. We will ensure that each and every student has the skills, knowledge, and dispositions needed for them to create their own successful future.

I look forward to an awesome school year! GO SPARTANS!

Somerset Middle School uses Top 20 Training as its advisory curriculum. Top 20 is all about being aware of our thinking so we can be the best version of ourselves and each other so we can all reach our highest potential. Students learn about our Spartan Standards, our guiding principles for how we will behave and treat each other. These standards are discussed and students identify what this looks like and sounds like throughout SMS in order to create a positive learning environment.

Service projects are a part of what we do at Somerset Middle School, and Chilly Charitable Week allows our students to give back to our local community in a variety of ways, all while participating in different, fun winter activities. Students donate money, paper goods, cleaning supplies, and canned goods that are given to local charitable organizations or organizations that directly impact some of our students.

Our week wraps up with our annual Blanket Project. Students donate money and fleece and then cut and tie fleece blankets. These blankets are donated to Grace Place, Lakeview Hospital, Westfield Hospital, and Turning Point Women’s Shelter to spread warmth and kindness to those in difficult situations. This year students made 150 blankets!

STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE! 46 student actors took the stage to bring Somerset High School’s production of Disney’s Newsies to life. The musical is loosely based on the historical events of the Newsboys strike of 1899. In addition to the high school actors on stage, three students played in the live pit orchestra, and six more helped with backstage and technical elements of the show. Additionally, many other students contributed to the set, props, and costumes.

This year, Somerset High School will be presenting Shrek the Musical in March through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International. This lively and humorous family-favorite is sure to be a hit, so watch for reservation information!

We love celebrating our families here at Somerset School District! Somerset Elementary has been celebrating our Grandparents for decades. Years ago, we celebrated the day with the whole school but once we moved to the new elementary school it became a second grade program. Each May the second graders dress up like their favorite grandparents, prepare a skit, and sing. It is a day for making memories.

Our summer school program has traditionally run for six weeks. We offer two three week sessions, however, each year we revisit this and the calendar is set. All registration is done online through Infinite Campus. We offer ten different adventure camp/day camps at the elementary school during the first session and drop down to five second session, since adventure camp is by invitation only and runs only three weeks.

Over the two sessions we offer approximately thirty-nine different classes at the middle school. At the high school level we offer seven online courses for credit, one in-person class (high school physical education), and remedial for students who need to make up credits from the past year. Also part of our high school program is the BFS/Open gym program which has approximately 150 students enrolled.

SCHOOL BUS INFORMATION

The School District of Somerset contracts services through Safe-Way Bus Company to provide safe and efficient bus transportation, in compliance with Wisconsin State Statutes, for students whose primary residence is within the school district boundaries and more than two (2) miles from school. For students living less than two miles from school, transportation is offered if there is an area of “unusual hazard” that is not mitigated in another way. If you need to discuss anything related to transportation, please visit our website, or contact Michelle Mahler at mmahler@somerset.k12.wi.us.

Somerset School District does not require families to register for transportation each year – information is carried over from year to year, if no changes are required. All information is available through Infinite Campus. For any changes, a link to the Transportation Registration form can be found viaInfinite Campus as well as through the District website, on the Transportation page, under the Families tab.

ROUTES: The transportation coordinator has been working with Safe-Way on fall routing over the summer. Somerset School District will no longer require all families to register for transportation. Transportation information will roll over from the previous year.

PARENTS, please take this opportunity to sign in to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to view your current information. If everything looks correct, please check back in the fall for any changes.

PLEASE FILL OUT THE REGISTRATION/CHANGE FORM IF:

• Students did not ride last year, but now require transportation services

• Students are new to Somerset School District

EXCEPTION: Junior Kindergarten students fill indicating transportation needs

• Students require different accommodations from previous year

• Students will no longer require student transportation services

EXCEPTION: Recent graduates will automatically be removed from services

The form can be found at www.somerset.k12.wi.us (Click on Transportation)

Transportation information will be communicated through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. An announcement will be sent to families with active transportation needs when the portal has been updated for the upcoming school year. Please make sure that contact information is up-to-date in Infinite Campus and review notification settings to ensure timely receipt of important details.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS

Somerset School District will be using the Parent Portal Messenger in Infinite Campus to provide voice, email, and text message alerts. Please be sure to set up your Parent Portal activation in Infinite Campus to receive emergency and many other notifications.

We encourage you to create/update your Infinite Campus account and be sure to include both home and work email addresses and phone numbers. For your convenience, Somerset School District will set notification preferences, enabling families to receive emergency messages via primary email address and home telephone numbers. You may customize your settings to receive text messages as well as calls to your mobile, work, or alternate phone numbers.

WEATHER: In cases of extreme weather, school delays or closures are normally announced by 5:30 AM whenever possible. On days schools are closed, all after school activities are also cancelled.

EMERGENCIES: These are managed on an individual basis, typically in coordination with local public agencies. In all cases, if students are relocated, families are urged to follow the instructions provided by the school district and/or emergency services.

The Parent Portal is available for all parents. Please take a moment to review/ activate the Parent Portal through Infinite Campus as this will be the messenger used to communicate school closings and other school related messages. Lunch payments can be made through the portal as well as viewing of grades, schedules, assignments, attendance, and all summer school information.
