What a year... a time of uncertainty
An unexpected guest Half way through our Junior year spring semester we were hit with some unexpected news, the news was covid-19. Things were left in uncertainty on how the semester would work, how long we would be doing class remotely. We thought this issue would go away by summer of 2020. Senior year was coming right around the corner, and we were faced with the reality we would have to adjust to remote learning through zoom. As a class we adapted to the challanges quickly. A special thanks to Al and Eric for always staying positive, helpful, and thoughtful through this time. Although covid-19 changed somethings during our senior year, it sure didn’t stop us from making some badass work!

Social Issue In the very beginning of our fall semester we were tasked to think of a social issue that has importance to us. We were warned to choose wisely because this project would turn into something bigger and we would work on it all year. I dabbled between a couple different topics that all had importance to me and eventually landed on cosmetic testing on animals as my social issue. Cosmetic testing on animals was an important issue to me because I recognize it is still a major issue and I wanted to become more informed, as well as having the ability to inform others on the issue and how to help. The following pages in my book will demonstrate the research and information I found on the topic. Viewer discretion is adviced, some images might be disturbing to look at.

Social Issue
Cosmetic Testing on Animals So what is cosmetic testing? Cosmetic testing is an inhumane practice that places harmful chemicals on small animals to ensure the safety of the beauty product for humans. Beauty products such as makeup, fragrances, shampoos, and lotions are tested on small animals multiple times before the company determines its a safe product for consumers. Unfortunately, the practice of cosmetic testing has been happening for years and we are still not at the point of eliminating the practice completely.
These innocent animals have chemicals being placed on their shaven skin, and have chemicals being placed on their eyes. Both of these tests are to determine the irritation levels. No type of relief is given to them afterwards, they just have to deal with the irritation.

Social Issue
Who is being affected by it? The most common animals that are used for these inhumane testings are rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits. These animals are frequently being used because they are not protected by the “Animal Welfare Act.” The Animal Welfare Act is a law that was passed in 1966. It is the only Federal law in the United States that regulates the treatment of animals in research, exhibition, transport, and by dealers. unfortunately this law does not help protect the three main animals that are being used for cosmetic testing.
What are beauty products? The definition of beauty products can range, but the main ones used for cosmetic testing are makeup, fragrances, shampoos, and lotions. All of these products as stated before are tested on animals to try and determine the safety of the products. A common misconception when it comes to giving my issue the title Cosmetic testing, people automatically think the products being tested are limited to only makeup. What people don’t realize it goes deeper than that, and these test aren’t only for makeup. At the end of these tests, the animals unfortunately face death. Death is inflicted upon them by either asphyxiation, neck-breaking, and decapitation.

Social Issue
Is there an alternative? The frustrating thing about this whole process is that these tests aren’t even necessary. What I mean by this is that, studies have shown that animal testing results can be quite variable, which comes down to incunclusive results. These results don’t help guarantee the customer’s safety, which is the whole reason these tests are being done on these animals in the first place. There is an alternative these companies can take, which still helps them ensure the safety of their product to consumers. The alternative is called Non-Animal testing.
Which results in combining human cell based test and computer models to deliver faster and more accurate results, when trying to determine the safety of certain products and chemicals on human skin. This alternative helps deliver more accurate results in comparison to animal testing, which can take up to months or years to get any type of data, which at the end, ends up being inconclusive. Non-Animal testing can cost more to get results, which is why some companies still stick to cosmetic testing, to save money.
Boycotting Nars In 2017 NARS cosmetics, a well known makeup brand received a lot of backlash from their consumers. The reason being that NARS announced that they will be stepping back on its cruelty-free stance in order to enter the Chinese market. Nars shared an Instagram post where it explained, and I quote “that while the company was against animal testing and will remain cruelty free elsewhere, this move was necessary for them to be able to start selling products in China.” In China animal testing is mandatory for all cosmetic companies, and because NARS was trying to sell their products over there, they had to comply to the law of cosmetic testing on animals in order to sell their products. This made the consumers of NARS very upset, and caused an uprise of social media post calling out NARS, and using the hashtag #boycottNars. Fall 2020 15

Social Issue
Things are being uncovered After the occurence of the NARS boycott, people started realizing they could use their voice to make changes, with that we were heading in the right space. Consumers were becoming more aware of which companies were also contributing to Cosmetic testing. A light was started to being shined and exposing all of these companies that support cosmetic testing. The boycott of NARS helped bring into light other major companies that are also selling products in China, which then causes for their products to not be Animal cruelty free, as they claim to be. The following brands that allow animal crueltry in order to make profit out of their products are M.A.C cosmetics, Estee Lauder, Maybelline, Chanel Fragances, NARs, and L’oréal.

Make a difference! I believe our wallet has a lot of power, we can control which companies we want to support and fund. In our current era of social media, social media becomes such a helpful tool to get people together and hold these companies accountable for their inhumane actions. Like the example of NARS and how people hosted a boycott and used social media to spread the news. We must continue putting pressure on these companies, and lawmakers, into helping us get rid of these inhumane practices throughout the world. One way you can help is by doing your research! Before buying any cosmetic products, make sure the claims they are making are actually true. If they claim they are cruelty free take some time and try to confirm the claim the company is making is true. Don’t support the wrong people, use your money as your voice.

Clock Project The clock project is a yearly occurrence for Seniors, its part of our whole year progression with our social issue. This is the first project we do in regards to our social issue. This project in the past years was usually done physically, students would make a physical and funtioning clock. Since our senior year was done fully remote, our proffesors knew students at home didn’t have the resources or space that allowed past students to make a physical clock. Instead we decided to make our clock digitally which gave us more creative freedrom and less constraints compaired to making something physical.
22 Clock Project
Telling time
The first task given to us was to find a unique and different way to tell time. This was the concept I came up with.
The next step was to visualize how my clock would look, and how I would intergrate my social issue into my clock. The main challange was how would I depict my topic “Cosmetic testing on animals” without it being too straightfoward but also being clear at the sametime. One thing that helped me in the beginning was creating a mindmap. Fall 2020 23
24 Clock Project
First trials For my first trials for my clock I was messing with a video of ink in water, it was my methaphor of showing the harmful chemicals used on the animals while being tested on. I then added animal foot prints more specifically a bunny footprints and guinea pig foot print which are some common animals which get tested on. I played around with how the clock arms looked, as well as the ink background.

The Poster show Due to Covid-19 this year the poster show was executed differently compared to other years. Our class of 2021 raised to the challenge and decided we wanted to host the poster show online. We had 6 weeks to execute this event and were successful. The first week consisted of everyone in the class trying to collect as many posters from design firms, instagram artist, or from our own class. After two weeks we were able to collect around 200 poster and are very grateful for everyone who donated. We decided we would do this online by creating a website where people could bid on a poster of their choice, the silent auction went on for a week. During that week people could also join us for our live events on discord where we had different guest speakers and also hosted our live auction.

Let’s get creative! The first steps for the poster show were to collect posters, but most importantly to come up with a theme for the poster show. Each student in the class was tasked to create a theme that represented our class as well as the event. We could do any dimensions, colors, and theme the sky was the limit. The following spreads are showing all of the poster themes my wonderful class came up with and finally showing which was choosen to represent our class for the poster show. I also put a spread showing my thoughts and process behind the poster I created.

Marketing Committee In the beginning of the semester as a class we broke into different groups. Each group was tasked with a aspect of the two main events we would be hosting this semester, which were the poster show and senior exhibit. We had committee’s incharged of events, digital, and web team. I was apart of the marketing committee, in the marketing committee we were in charge of creating all the visuals that would promote the poster show. We created social media post to go on our instagram, emails to send out and invite guest to the event.

This helped us figure out who we were inviting personally to the event through email!

Website Construction One benefit of having the poster show online was that we could take as many poster donations as possible and bidding on posters was more accessible to people around the world. The website was the main source of the silent auction, we had all the posters listed on the site and people could bid on the the entire week. You didn’t win a bid until the end of the week and in the site itself we were able to process payment and shipping. Luckily I was able to snag a couple of posters.

Cosmetic testing Exhibit With my exhibit I wanted to keep it clean and simple, which is why the color selection is just black, red, and white. I really had to think what topics did I want to focus on after all of my research. I really wanted to drive home the point of being an aware which companies you are supporting and using your money as your voice. The structure was made in sketchup to then later be implemented in the VR website. The following spreads after this show some of my proccess when creating my exhibit, as well as show casing a handful of structures that my classmates created for their exhibit.

The Final stretch! I can’t believe I am graduating! I wanted to make this little section in my book to reflect back on my time here in the program. From those cursed 1st year projects we had to create, to looking back on all of the all-nighters as crazy memories I have made these past 4 years. I know this senior year wasn’t ideal because of covid, but it was still part of the process and something I will look back on. I really want to thank all of the amazing friends I have made in the program! for always being there for me helping me out during the stressful times, and being there for the fun times. I also want to thank animal crossing for getting me through this pandemic. Finally, I want to thank all of my amazing professors who have helped me grow as a person and designer, I am forever grateful for my classmates.
