True story of “A Migrant’s Son” portrayed by Michaela Burger DUBBO audiences who gave her rousing standing ovations may remember award-winning cabaret star Michaela Burger performing the dynamic personality Edit Piaf last year. The powerhouse performer is returning to Dubbo Regional Theatre on Friday, April 12, at 8pm, this time to perform “A Migrant’s Son”. The true story is based on Michaela’s own family and features traditional instruments, including bouzouki, and touches deeply on topics of racism, intolerance, judgement and the struggles presented by migration. “Michaela’s immense vocal range and ability to portray tragedy, love and humour will give you goosebumps,” DRTCC manager Linda Cristof said.

AN unassuming pale brick home in South Dubbo which had been at the centre of a brush with the law has also become the focus of a personal pursuit. Former Dubbo resident Kevin Fogarty (pictured) decided to find the house which had been built by Dubbo Apex Club when he was president back in the 1960s. The three-bedroom property in Lovett Avenue had been raffled in 1967 as an Art Union fundraiser. “We had previously held a number of Art Unions for cars but this was a bold new venture,” Mr Fogarty explained. “It was drawn at the club’s Venetian Carnival at the swimming pool near Christ-

Kevin Fogarty.

“I received quite a tongue lashing but managed to escape with a warning,” Mr Fogarty told Dubbo Photo News. While recently visiting his daughter Kim in Dubbo, Mr Fogarty set out to find the house which was more or less on the edge of town when it was built.

He was unable to find its location due to local expansion since that time. Contacting Dubbo Regional Council, Mr Fogarty was helped by business services manager Natasha Everett, to whom he was very grateful for the assistance. He wrote to Dubbo Photo News wanting to commend Council for the attention he had received. “The house is still there and remains in good condition. It still looks good after more than 50 years. I moved from Dubbo to Deniliquin after teaching at North Dubbo Public School,” he said. Mr Fogarty believes that historical items pertaining to Dubbo Apex Club are now housed at Macquarie Regional Library.

mas,” he recalled. “And if memory serves me correctly it was won by a man named Basil Propert.” At the time, the law stated that sales of Art Union tickets had to cease a fortnight prior to the draw date to allow for all tickets to be collected. This presented a problem for the Apexians whose reach had included surrounding towns. “At the scheduled date for drawing, we had not sold sufficient tickets to cover our costs so proceeded to sell tickets on the night of the draw. “Unfortunately, one of our members tried to sell a ticket to the local licensing sergeant with the result that I was summoned to be at his office by 10am the following morning.
