Dubbo Local Aboriginal Lands Council By SUELLYN REES, CEO ABORIGINAL culture and spirituality is deeply linked to the land. It is a feeling of oneness and connectedness of the elements of the earth and the universe,

where everything living and non-living is interrelated. The principles of connectedness teaches the individual to concentrate on community and environs rather than self. I spent a couple of days this week attending the Bangamalanha conference and experiencing Aboriginal ways of education. I was struck by the immense heart and soul that was poured in to the teaching experience by all the Aboriginal educators. The language workshop began with a heartfelt explanation of why language is important and what it means to the Aboriginal culture; that it connects us all and brings us together as one. Harmony is achieved by a reverent respect for all things and all others within the interconnected universe. I have never experienced such a beautiful method of learning and am so grateful for having had the opportunity to experience it. The more I learn about our ancient and wonderful Australian culture and system of beliefs, the more I want to immerse myself in it. The proper education of all Australians is important so that we can find better ways for our future.

In line with NAIDOC’s 2018 theme, ‘Because of Her We Can’, Regional Enterprise Development Institute Ltd. (or REDIE.E, formerly MPREC) are celebrating the contribution of women within their organisation and communities. One of their biggest stars and all round most loved employees is Deborah Ryan, who has been nominated for the 2018 Dubbo Chamber of Commerce & Industry People’s Choice Award. The award gives the community the chance to recognise a person who can be relied upon for excellent customer service. It is nominated and voted on by the people of Dubbo. Those who have met Deb know her cheerful nature and fantastic sense of humour can’t be beat. Anyone who walks through the doors at REDI.E – or chats to her on the phone – receives five-star treatment. Overall, the REDI.E staff are tasked with the very important job of training and educating job seekers in their communities. Deb is often a jobseeker or partner’s first contact point with the organisation. One such partner is waste management company Cleanaway, who REDI.E have joined forces with to deliver an Automated Partner Site (APS) in Dubbo, as part of the NSW Container Deposit Scheme, Return and Earn. REDI.E will run a community access point, where people can drop off large volumes of containers and get the refund put back into their bank account. Cleanaway will regularly bring their trucks to come and pick up the containers from the site. It will also provide a valuable face-to-face service for customers, and many new jobs within REDI.E. “We are really looking forward to seeing it up and running, and seeing how much of a difference it makes for the scheme," said Mellissa Bourke, Operations Manager from REDI.E.

“We are also looking forward to catching up with members of the community who use the service. It will be a way to stay in touch and connect further with people in the region.” Mellissa said the site will be up and running soon. “Acknowledging the success of our programs and the communities that we work in is an important part of celebrating culture. As an organisation we are able to get behind programs that can make important changes for these communities and this is something to celebrate.” REDI.E is the next evolution of the Murdi Paaki Regional Enterprise Corporation Ltd (MPREC). The name change reflects a new clarity of direction. REDI.E are ready to start a new era, with a renewed focus on providing the best possible services across Western NSW.
