WHO AM I?

Russ the Story Bus to make a Dubbo stop

z I was born on November 17, 1942, in Queens, New York, escaping the crime-riddled streets of Little Italy, where I grew up, by immersing myself in the cinemas of old-world Hollywood. z I earned degrees in film communication from New York University. z After a brief stint teaching there, I began my career creating some of the world’s greatest and most admired films of the 20th and 21st centuries. z Early success came with Who’s That Knocking at My Door during the late ‘60s, starring Harvey Keitel. z That was followed by Mean Streets (1973), Taxi (1976) and New York New York (1977). z During the 1980s, I released the black and white film Raging Bull, followed by The King of Comedy (1982) and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY OVER 1000 books are on the move, heading to Dubbo on board Russ the Story Bus thanks to the Sydney Writer’s Festival Children’s Festival of Moving Stories initiative. It is the first time the bus has been taken out of the metropolitan area. On Thursday, December 1, Russ will drop in on Dubbo West Public School (9.30am and 11.30am) and Dubbo Public School (1pm to 3pm).

Travelling with Russ are illustrator and writer Judith Rossell and illustrator Tony Flowers to meet students who will get the chance to ask them about their craft, upbringing and career. Students can browse the latest children’s and Young Adult (YA) books and take home a book of their choice for free. There are fun activities inside the bus which is fitted out to look like a library. You can’t miss the exterior of Russ the Story Bus which has been painted with larger-than-

life artwork by award-winning illustrator Shaun Tan from his book “Rules of Summer”. After Dubbo, Russ the Story Bus will visit Mudgee, Maitland and Gosford before returning to Sydney. “The Children’s Festival of Moving Stories is part of a long-term strategy by Sydney Writers’ Festival to introduce young readers to authors and illustrators to inspire them in their own aspirations for the future,” said Clare Sawyer, recently appointed Sydney Writers’ Festival’s Head of Children’s Programs.

Shining a light on Hans Claven Oval THE sporting clubs that use Hans Claven Oval will be able to train and play longer thanks to the renewal of the lighting system. “The new lighting system will be a 200lux system which brings it up to the level used for semi-professional football games,” Dubbo Regional Council manager Sporting Facilities Wes Giddings said. “The new lighting system will improve lighting across the field but will cost less to run than the old system which was a 100lux system."
