A beautiful afternoon at Dubbo Trots Contributed by JACQUI INGHAM THE warm weather made for a beautiful afternoon at Dubbo Trots on Sunday, July 17, bringing a nice crowd of all ages. It was great to see the Tulhurst Racing Stables, as a large supporter of Dubbo Trot meetings, get two winners, two seconds, a third and a fourth. Dubbo Harness Racing Club hosts its next meeting on Sunday, August 21.

Phil Phillips – champion half NARROMINE half Phil Phillips played alongside local legend and NSW centre Bobby Weir at a time when the Jets dominated Group XI. The dynamic half-back was the architect for Narromine, finely crafting an explosive pack of forwards with a brilliant set of backs. Narromine boasted an all-star scrum that included future Panthers and St George prop Ross Cale, 1974 Amco Cup toughman Dennis Richie, ball-winning hooker Peter Walls (when No 12s actually raked for the ball), State of Origin and Canterbury Bulldogs forward John Coveney, the durable Murray Bouchier, Country second-rower “Arnold “Puddy” Gillespie and Brian Walsh. When Phillips looked outside he could call on Trevor Blackhall, Pat Smith (a future Country NSW and South Sydney captain), Englishman Chris Harding, speedsters Greg Barling and Noel Gallagher (a renowned cycling champion) and i ball iley the man rated by former 2DU boss Reg Ferguson as the greatest fullback he had seen in Group XI. Phil won the inaugural 2DU Regency Jewellers Trophy in 1973; ten years later he was still rated so highly by selectors and coaches that he was named Footballer of the Year for a second time! Phil spent a couple of seasons under Test winger Johnny King at Wellington but couldn’t oust the young blondehaired Dubbo Macquarie half Bobby Pilon (who was now with Orange CYMS) from the Western Division team. Phillips played opposite some great No.7s including CYMS Ken McMullen, Parkes Country and Newtown star John Bonham, Reg McCulla from Canowindra, Noel Sing, Doug Wighton (Condobolin) and Brian Lawson, who he replaced at Wellington in 1974. One of the greats – Phil Phillips! 34
