TWELVE-YEAR-OLD golfer Lachlan Jones has just returned from a successful trip to the Gold Coast where the NSW team won the Schools Australia National Championship. As captain, when the St Mary’s Primary School student received the trophy on behalf of his NSW team, there were a few tears shed by proud grandparents Peter and Heather Sadler. “My late father, Lachie’s great-grandfather Doug loved his golf. In fact, he was completing a history of the Dubbo club when he passed away a couple of years ago,” Peter explained. “I knew of his interest in the club and his administrative contribution but it was only recently that I discovered he was also a pretty talented player. I was blown away when I found this old trophy dad won in the late 1950s. He was B-Grade champ. Not a bad effort given the strength of Dubbo golf in that era,” Saddles continued proudly. “Dad would be raising a glass for young Lachie with some of his old Dubbo High and local golfing mates I’m sure,” he laughed. Peter was a fair player himself who held the position of Dubbo Club vicecaptain for seven or eight years. “My daughter’s husband Jason is a keen hacker as well and my wife Heath-
INITIATIVE
Drains are just for rain A BRIGHT yellow slogan strategically stencilled along the retail strips of Macquarie and Talbragar Streets will serve as a powerful reminder to people shopping and working in the CBD that litter washed into stormwater drains can easily end up in one of our greatest natural resources – the Macquarie River. In an initiative under Dubbo City Council’s Bin Your Butts and Bat for the Macquarie River campaign, the words Drains to the Macquarie River have been strategically stencilled above 50 stormwater drains within the CBD. Bin Your Butts and Bat for the Macquarie River is a multi-level campaign
er likes to pull out the clubs. Unfortunately her ambitions are on hold at the moment as a gardening mishap resulted in a visit to theatre... and the insertion of some plates and screws into a broken ankle!” While Heather is resting up from her job as administrator at the club, she will have time to study her grandson’s style. Peter says his grandson has had an outstanding season. “He won the NSW Primary School Sports Association trophy and has been invited to tour New Zealand for a series of tournaments in January. This week’s win has been the icing on the cake, leading NSW to victory in the National Champs. “Next up is the NSW Champion of Champions Tournament at Coffs Harbour next week. Jason might pick up a few tips from him,” he laughed loudly. “Lachie plays off a handicap of seven; Jason’s off 9!” Lachlan Jones, the little sporting champion, follows in the footsteps of local golf prodigies such as Kim Grattan, Matt Gleeson, Jake O’Brien, the Wilson twins Lindsay and Patrick, Leonie Oxley and Megan Russell who all learned their skills on the long fairways and challenging greens at royal Dubbo. And within his steady hands, he holds the proud Sadler golfing heritage.
aimed at reducing discarded cigarette butts and other litter on the retail strips of Macquarie Street and Talbragar Street and is funded by a $48,420 grant as part of the NSW Government’s Waste Less Recycle More initiative for local litter prevention action. Dubbo City Council’s stormwater education officer Karen Hagan said that twice-daily clean ups are required in the CBD to correctly dispose of litter and that cigarette butts were the most littered and harmful items. “When it rains, cigarette butts lying in our streets and gutters are carried via the stormwater system into the Macquarie River, where the chemicals contained within the butts can negatively impact on the health of the river water and aquatic life.”

WHO AM I? ? z I was born on June 11, 1959, in Oxford, England, and educated at the prestigious Eton College. z I took up rowing and competed nationally. z At Cambridge University, I studied archaeology and anthropology, and met actors Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry. z Together with Ben Elton we established a skit show called Alfresco, which then led to a partnership with Rowan Atkinson on Blackadder (1983). z I landed roles in movies including Sense and Sensibility (1995), 101 Dalmatians (1996) and Stuart Little (1999). z Although I’d been famous in the UK and Australia for decades, I found widespread fame for my role as the grumpy but lovable Dr Gregory House on the US television series House.
