ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll

35 YEARS! Wow! My retirement plan is to continue to work as long as the music industry continues to support our pages. I so appreciate all of your support over the years. By far we have not covered the music scene as well as we should have, or could have but we continue to strive to do our best and have a continued desire to do better each issue. 35 Years ago Whitey Noll, my husband, was 40 years old and was at another dead end job and had the need to take care of our 4 children. His friend and boss at the time, Mike Staub, told him what he needed to do was start his own business. Mike was and is owner of “The Apartment Guide”. Whitey was like, “right,” we were on welfare and had no money to speak of so Whitey went to the library and checked out a book entitled “The Have & the Have Nots”, we of course were the “Have Nots”. He studied up on publishing and with the help of Mike giving us point-

ers on what to do and how to get started the Pennsylvania Musician Magazine was born. With pure determination and his mom’s credit card for gas and a few good friends who loaned us money to print the first issue, he began the endeavor of creating The Pennsylvania Musician Magazine. He was a paid performing musician in the 60’s and early 70’s and he thought it would be a wonderful tool for

‘ado’ it is a great pleasure to continue to let you know who and what is happening throughout this great state and hope you join us in that endeavor and keep us alive until the day that we are no longer needed or wanted. Over the years Whitey has given me the permission to carry on his vision and I have strived to do that. When we moved into the computer world and started doing more of the paper on our own he bowed out and moved on to other endeavors and left me the responsibility to keep on fishing to feed the family. I am honored and blessed that you all have continued to support the Pennsylvania Musician Magazine. We are a DIY endeavor and solely funded by our advertisers. I also want to take time to thank all the many people that help me put this paper together and get it out to the public (because without getting it into the hands of the public there’s no sense in doing a paper) including: Keith Hummel, Jim Price (The Professor), Rachel Rocks, Meredith Kaminek, Deb Whitcomb, Eric Hoffman, John Kerecz. Deanne Trio, Randy Wilson, Shawn Kurey, Jimi Jaymz, Imelda Redding, and Jeff Pittinger, Center Daily Times (Amy Sinclair & Chad Cowder). Without the help of others and God, my heavenly Father who encourages continued.on page 26...

Whitey, lead singer for the Starfires musicians, clubs and all music related industries to have a publication that would let people know who and what was happening in the area and many musicians have used our pages to market and build their careers and their fan base including: Kix, Sharks, Hybrid Ice, Silver City, Live, Fuel, The Hooters, The Badlees, Emily’s Toybox, UUU, Candlelight Red, Halestorm, and a host of others. Whitey’s thought was to have a publication that musicians could use to market themselves without judgement and criticism. He felt it was our job to let the general public know who and what was happening and not be a critique type of publication. His thought was that one person could love a band or performer and the next person could hate them and not stand their sound, he did not want to get in the middle. Plus he said it takes guts to get up and perform ones music and musicians didn’t need the negativity. We still hold to those principles today. So without further
