One day, Mr. and Mrs. Santos woke up suddenly. Their little hut was shaking. They quickly woke up and hurriedly went to their children, Ana and Andres.

"Ana! Andres! Wake up! There’s an earthquake! It's shaking so hard!”, shouted Mrs. Santos as she tried to wake up her children.

“Mother! Calm down. Let us duck and cover our heads”, said Ana. “There is a table in the kitchen. Let us crawl underneath it to keep us safe from any falling objects,” added Ana while bringing with her the family’s emergency bag she prepared.

3

“Father, stay away from those hanging objects, and let us duck and cover our heads, too. Let’s move there and stay under the bench”, explained Andres as they went their way to the bench.

4

Let us stay on our knees and bend over while holding the bench,” exclaimed Andres. Father followed what Andres told him. The shaking continued. They kept holding on to the bench.

5

“When are we going to go outside, Ana?”, asked Mrs. Santos. “Let us hold on until the shaking stops mother. It is only then that we can go outside,” answered Ana.

6
6

Falling objects were scattered on the floor. Their favorite jar was broken into pieces. The family’s picture frame was damaged.

Upon seeing all these things, they fervently prayed that this disaster will be over soon.

7

When the shaking was over, the siblings guided their parents in moving out of the house while still covering their heads. Despite the chaos, Ana had never forgotten to bring the emergency bag with essential things for survival and their important documents with her.

8
8

“Let us stay away from the big trees and poles. We will stay on a wide plain to avoid falling debris and others that may harm us,” uttered Andres. As they were in the open space, they experienced aftershocks that made them hold on to each other.

9

Eventually, the earthquake ended. The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) team, together with the other rescue teams, came to the area to investigate if there were casualties. They also checked if there were properties damaged to ensure the safety of the residents and gave aid to them.

10

As Mr. Santos heard what the authorities said, he quickly checked his family for any injuries and thanked God that he found nothing.

12
11

After the investigation, the authorities informed everyone that they can already return to their respective houses. Santos’s family felt safe and secure. So, they immediately went home.

13
12

“My children, how do you know what to do before, during, and after an earthquake?”, asked Mrs. Santos. “We heard on the radio that there will be a strong earthquake in our region. They gave reminders of what should we do to be safe,"Andres replied.

13

“He reminded us that we should stay calm, move our things to a place with solid bases, put the important papers in a bag and an emergency kit which contains a flashlight, radio, blankets, batteries, whistle, food that can last long, and things we need if we evacuate”, added Ana confidently.

14
14

"We also have a quarterly earthquake drill simulation in our school. The drills teach us how to prepare and manage ourselves in times of disasters", said Andres happily to his parents.

15

Since then, the Santos family realized the importance of listening to the news on the radio. They realized that it is important to be prepared whenever there is a disaster. They were also thankful to their children for applying the knowledge gained in school. Indeed, knowledge is power.

16

COMPREHENSION CHECK:

1. What should we prepare before the earthquake comes?

2. What should be done during an earthquake?

3. What should be done after an earthquake?

4. Why do you think we need to be calm when there is a disaster?

5. Have you ever experienced an earthquake? How did you feel? Why?

6. How do you calm yourself whenever a disaster hits your place?

7. How can you help your classmates be prepared when disaster strikes in your area?

8. Why do you think the story is entitled “Knowledge is Power”?
