75 Years and bUrns feed store
How does a business stay relevant and profitable for 75 years?
Online competition, customers changing needs and priorities, and maintaining experienced and knowledgeable staff are just three of the many obstacles business owners face. Burns Feed Store’s recipe to overcome the battles has led to the recent 75 year milestone celebration and strong third generation leadership. This family business has drawn on the strengths of each family member.
Recognition is not new to Burns Feed Store. In 2017 they received the Gresham Chamber Business Excellence Award for Family Business. When asked, Shelley Burns Guisto, Manager of Burns Feed Store, said her family business has been built on amazing customers and rock-solid customer service. “Our customer needs have changed dramatically since my grandfather started the business, but our customer service continues to be our greatest asset.”
Famously known as the place to go for chickens, Burns Feed Store supplies products for all animals, Trager grills for the serious BBQ chef, gift items for all ages, and garden supplies. The business was born out of love for agriculture and animals. Shelley’s first job was at the feed store, and she never looked back. The family working in the company grew when Troy, Shelley’s husband began managing the warehouse. He added Traeger Grills, a successful department from sales to repair.
Quoted from Hoodview news, Rawley Burns, Shelleys father and owner, said “Shelley loves this business. She absolutely loves customers. That’s her forte and she brought in what I jokingly call the foo-foo stuff... gift items... candles, décor, things like that. She also features products from local vendors.” As the third generation, Shelley’s determination to continue to grow the business and make an impact on the community is strong.
and CoUntInG
Gresham rotarY
Staying relevant and profitable as a business means staying connected to the community outside of the business hours. Shelley volunteers at many events and is a key player on the Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation board. Giving back in time and talent comes naturally for Shelley who said “I love this business. I love our employees. And I love our community. I am beyond blessed to wake up everyday and do what I love.”
Burns Feed Store has left fingerprints… or hoof prints…all over the greater Gresham region. They continue to leave legacy impressions all over the region. Here’s to 75 more years!
This year the Gresham Rotary celebrated it’s 75th anniversary of their Steak Fry.
The popular community event originally held at West Gresham Grade School, continues to cater to the needs of those they serve and evolves to include new ways to provide funding for the Rotary service projects. Raffle prizes, wine and beer, business sponsorships, add to the fundraising possibilities to achieve the club goals for scholarships to Mt Hood Community College.
Doug Walker, Walker Travel and Cruises, is past President of the Gresham Rotary and a proud Rotarian since 1971. His term in office was during the COVID years. Adapting to the restraint’s COVID brought to gatherings, Doug was a steady leader of the organization, pivoting to the needs of the membership and those they serve. Commitment to YMCA Camp Collins, Dictionary Project, and Mt. Hood Community College Scholarships continued full speed ahead. COVID was nothing more than a speed bump to the strong Rotary membership.
Rotary is built on the Four-Way Test: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIP? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Gresham takes the 4 way test seriously, providing for a common purpose.
As an international organization it provides amazing life experiences for many members past and present. A nine-month exchange student program has made an impact on the families and classrooms in the Gresham area. International exchange students have come to Gresham from Japan, South Africa, and Mexico as part of the program Rotary encourages philosophically and financially.
Celebrating over 75 years as a civic organization deserves more than just a Steak Fry. It deserves acknowledgement from a grateful Gresham community.

oUt and aboUt with PoLiCe Chief traVis GULberG
Chief Travis Gulberg has been in law enforcement since 1996. He served in Multnomah County before becoming Gresham Police Chief in 2021.
A strong supporter of the Chamber’s Adopt-A-Cop program, he has also restored the monthly celebrations swearing new officers in publicly. At a recent celebration he addressed the new officers and guests saying “Today is a milestone, when a promise to serve becomes a badge worn with honor. You are joining a profession that is not just a job---it’s a calling. A calling to be the calm in chaos, the voice of reason in conflict, and the steady hand in times of fear. You will be asked to make difficult decisions, to act with integrity when no one is watching, and to lead by example in every interaction.”
Chief Gullberg loves his job but he also loves the community. Here’s how, why, and where…
He’s a foody…but where in Gresham? I don’t know if this restaurant is a Chamber member but I have been going there since I was kid in the 70’s. My mom worked there in the 60’s. My favorite is a long burger with cheese and bacon, ketchup only. Then I dip it in the fry sauce. I also love the fries with sauce and a peanut butter shake.
Spare time is rare time but he loves…. Two things. First, it’s all about family for me. Whether it is dinner together, a family game night, watching sports (especially football...”Go Vikings!”), or just hanging out, I love to spend time with them. And second, I cannot lie, I like to eat. Gresham has great restaurants!
Absolute favorite community event? Cruisin’ with the Cops, of course...
Favorite nonprofit ? I am proud Rotarian.
Greatest joy? My family! My wife and sons have been my rocks. I’m very proud of my sons. My oldest is serving with the Portland Police Bureau as a police officer, and my youngest graduated from college and is working in digital technology.
Few people know… I work on and show my classic 1976 K5 Chevrolet Blazer. Surprised? I like to read, and my two sons and I have started a book club and are currently reading the Lord of the Rings books.
You didn’t ask but I’m telling you anyway,... I love to connect and serve through my job. This is a way of life for me. I also take great pride in people feeling safe in Gresham.

Gresham Area Chamber member, All About Automotive, Inc. has been recognized nationally by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce CO-100 as a 2025 Honoree in Customer Champions. This category celebrates businesses that have set themselves apart through outstanding customer service and innovative engagement strategies. The U.S. Chamber stated that the honorees not only have prioritized customer satisfaction but have also significantly expanded their customer base by employing unique and creative approaches.
US Chamber captured the essence of their business model stating in the award:
“All About Automotive is a trusted, family-owned auto repair facility based in Gresham, Oregon, committed to delivering high-quality service with integrity, transparency, and education at its core.”
Founded in 2000 by Steve and Karen Johnston, the shop services both foreign and domestic vehicles and has built a loyal customer base spanning Gresham, Troutdale, SE Portland, Boring, and beyond. With a tagline of “We treat your car as if it were our own,” the business emphasizes long-term relationships, personalized service, and empowering customers—particularly women, who are often the primary decision-makers in car care—with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. All About Automotive is distinguished by its ASE-certified technicians, its community-focused culture, and its emphasis on education—from mentoring high school interns to offering clear, respectful communication to every customer. As a member of multiple local chambers of commerce and a supporter of area schools and nonprofits, the business has become a cornerstone of its community. By combining top-tier technical service with compassion, clarity, and customer empowerment, All About Automotive is redefining what it means to be an auto repair shop people can truly trust.
Karen and Steve Johnston are not new to being recognized as well respected business owners.
In 2024 Karen was awarded the highest honor, that of being the Business Excellence Honoree of the Year. She was recognized as being a pillar in the community. One that makes the fabric of the community vibrant and makes others want to be part of whatever she is involved in. She has been a blessing and game changer through her recent efforts as a board member on the Eastside Timbers board, raising thousands of dollars for a state of the art soccer facility, and a Gresham Historical Society board member.
Congratulations to Steve and Karen Johnston, All About Automotive, for national recognition from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Voters said Yes to PUbLiC safetY.
Businesses and Citizens rallied together, passing a Fire and Police Levy. The levy goals were fewer crimes and fires, faster emergency response times and safer neighborhoods. The funding is well on it’s way to accomplishing the goals.
The levy has provided essential resources, such as helping to maintain the staffing levels needed to ensure safety, adding additional background investigators and administrative support to accelerate hiring.
With a police-focused recruiting strategy and team now in place, candidates are showing strong interest in Gresham. Each day, the department is actively working to bring on new officers and strengthen public safety, responding directly to the evolving needs of our community.
“One of the most encouraging signs is that we now have a larger pool of candidates to choose from, which puts us in a stronger position than before. While it still takes time to hire, certify, and train new officers before they can officially fill patrol shifts, those processes are all in motion. Each step brings us closer to having the staffing levels we need.” said Claudio Grandjean, Retired Gresham Police Captain, former Interim Police Chief, current background investigator.
Voters said Yes to hiGher edUCation.
The business community strongly supported protecting My Hood Community College, a vital public asset and ensuring it continues to serve as a hub for opportunity, learning, and growth.
Thanks to voters in the community, MHCC passed its first bond in 50 years.
The bond will accomplish the following:
• Prepare students for jobs by updating classrooms and labs to meet growing demand for skilled, trained workers in the community and offering modern tools and crossdisciplinary training.
• Upgrade aging facilities to ensure our community always has access to higher education. Fix outdated buildings built in 1970 to make major repairs and address safety issues.
• Upgrade campus resources for our whole community by restoring athletic spaces and making community pool upgrades, ensuring ADA access across facilities, renovating technology for urban and rural learners, and creating year-round spaces for the community to host events.
Monumental decisions made by Gresham Businesses and Citizens.

Those benefits, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will no longer be available on Nov. 1. That led Gov.
