Introduction Basrur / Basroor is a village in Kundapur taluk in Udupi district of Karnataka. It is a historic port town on the banks of the Varahi River. It covers an area up to 1424.4 acres with a total population of 6,613 people. Basrur is famous for its old temples, the main one being the ‘Shree Mahatobar Mahalingeshwara temple’. The town morphology too emphasises this importance with settlements on streets of various communities radiating from the main temple. Kundagannada(Kundapura Kannada) a dialect of Kannada is spoken by majority of people in the region.

Master Plan

History Historically Basrur was also known as Vasupura(named after the ruler Vasuchakravarthi). For much of the sixteenth century and the first half of the seventeenth century, it was the rice port on the Canara coast. In the 12th century, Basrur was ruled by the Alupas. During their rule the regional ruling system was introduced and the Keri(streets) were laid. They also brought about improvement in the trading system. During the 1400’s the Vijayanagara dynasty came into power. Since it was a huge dynasty they brought about the governor system for ease in the administration system. During this time the land owners were the Halaru(bunts). In 1510, Krishna Devaraya catered the formation of Agrahara, a settlement of Brahmins. In 1554, Sadashiva Raya (Tuluva Dynasty) willingly handed over Basrur to Keladi Nayakas. During the reign of the Keladi Nayakas, Kashi Matt was constructed. Many Portuguese travellers visited Basrur during this time. Before the Portuguese began trade, Islam followers of Basrur managed transportation and trade that took place through the boats. Once the Portuguese began trade in Basrur, there was competition between the locals and the Portuguese in selling products in the market and the roads of the markets were widened for ease in trade
