Remembering Dr. Gary Shelton: the smile that helped thousands of animals AMY WADE-CAROTENUTO

and who introduced us to Dr. Andrea James, who became our lead veterinarian for several years. We drove many a shelter dog to his hospital for him to perform hip surgeries or knee surgeries. The dogs that he did that for would probably not have been adopted had it not been for his help. After he married his wife Nena in 2015, they would travel to Thailand and he would perform spay/ neuter surgeries and provide other veterinary care to animals in need. He did this all as a volunteer. Dr. Shelton was one of a kind. He did more for animals than just about anyone I know. And he did it all with a smile and a great, contagious laugh.

Children often collect things at the beach — shells, rocks, driftwood — but it’s not as often that one sees them collecting trash that includes fishing line and other plastics, as well as a sand and sediment loaded tire. But that’s what Tanner Jones, 10, and Emily Dampieta, 11, were doing during a beach visit with their grandparents at MalaCompra on Father’s Day. “These two kids were trying to remove a tire with a little adult help,” said County Attorney Al Hadeed, himself a beachfrequenting environmentalist. He didn’t admit to whether he was the adult helping the youngsters wrestle the tire out of the water. Once they wrangled the tire out of the waves, the children rolled it up the dune to the walkover mat

CONGRATS TO OUR FATHER’S DAY CONTEST WINNERS

Two lucky dads were chosen as this year’s Observer Father’s Day contest winners: Palm Coast resident Mike Cohen and Ormond Beach resident Marc Schwartz. Congratulations to our winners and a special thanks to our sponsors for supporting this contest and supplying the prizes. Our sponsors were so that county staff could more easily remove it from beach. “These are some very environmentally-conscious kids protecting sea turtles by removing debris,” Hadeed said. “They set

The animals lost a dear friend last week when one of the hardest working, smartest, kindest veterinarians that I’ve ever met died unexpectedly from a heart attack. Dr. Gary Shelton cared about every animal and every owner. He opened three successful veterinary day practices, and, with several other veterinarians, founded The St. Augustine Regional Veterinary Emergency Center. He was a large animal veterinarian as well, and was involved with Flagler Humane Society for decades. In the ’90s and early 2000s, he would visit the shelter anytime we needed extra help, even providing court testimony which helped us to gain legal custody of animals from their abusers. In 2012 he was asked by a struggling FHS board of directors to help when we had no veterinarian, no medical staff and no executive director. He responded by bringing his expert medical team here. Shelton and his assistant Shannon ensured that our veterinary department was staffed and running smoothly. He was the one who asked me to return to FHS,
