From our experience, people will generally start to think about long term care (LTC) costs once they reach their late 50s and 60s. A frequent trigger is that they see someone else go through this process. They watch as friend or loved one moves out of their home into nursing care, or hires in-home care, and they see how this affects them financially and emotionally. When it comes to LTC benefit needs, we are talking about the 6 Activities of Daily Living (6 ADL’s): bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, tolieting and continence. If a loved one needs two of the six activities listed above, they can often begin to use the benefits of their LTC coverages (if applicable) after a 90-day waiting period. Here are three reasons LTC planning is important: • LTC offers protection from significant long term care expenses which may impact your retirement income stream. • LTC helps pay for services that may not be fully covered by private insurance or government programs. • LTC provides choices for how and where you receive care As financial advisors, we have seen clients spend upwards of $7,000+ per month for memory care in local facilities.

If the proper financial planning is not done to determine how an LTC event is going to be paid for, it can be detrimental to a couple’s retirement savings and monthly income and sometimes even force need to sell their home to pay for care for their loved one. It’s very important to have these difficult conversations with your spouse, family and your financial advisor to come up with a plan in the event you have a long term care need in your future. If you want a no obligation consultation to discuss your LTC needs or any other financial matter, please feel free to contact us and we’ll be glad to assist you.

A 19-year-old man stabbed a 15-year-old in the chest with a pocketknife at Holland Park on Sunday, Jan. 17, after an argument that began on social media, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. The 15-year-old was airlifted to an Orlando hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Deputies arrested the 19-year-old, Palm Coast resident Jared Douglas. “This situation should have never escalated to the point of a juvenile needing to be airlifted to the hospital for a stab wound over a social media fight! Really?” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said in an FCSO news release. “Thankfully, this was an isolated incident, and our team did a great job in quickly pulling resources, videos, and interviewing witnesses to track down the suspects and take the defendant into custody. We hope the victim has a speedy recovery. Parents, talk to your kids and teach them that violence is not a solution to an argument.” Witnesses told deputies that the 15-year-old had been arguing with a teenage girl on Snapchat about “sexual allegations” over the past week. A fight began when the victim was at the park and the girl showed up with two other males — including Douglas, who jumped into the fight and stabbed the teen in the lower chest before witnesses intervened, witnesses told deputies. Douglas, the girl and the other male fled in a red convertible that deputies tracked to a Blare Castle Drive house. Deputies recovered the knife and charged Douglas with Aggravated Battery with Permanent Disfigurement.

FCSO helps catch armed felon

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies helped Florida Highway Patrol officers catch a convicted felon who fled into the woods in the early morning hours of Jan. 14 after fleeing a traffic stop for reckless driving on Interstate 95 and crashing his car. The suspect, 23-year-old Henry Davis, recently served time in prison for a robbery in Palm Beach County and has never been issued a driver’s license. The vehicle he was driving narrowly missed running into a St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office deputy, then crashed at mile marker 281 after FCSO deputies used stop sticks to deflate its tires. Davis ran into the woods, but deputies caught him and arrested him on Senor Place in Palm Coast. They found a loaded firearm inside the Explorer.

Flagler improves 911 database Thanks to a $361,924 grant awarded to Flagler County from the Florida E911 Board, Flagler County has improved its 911 database to about 99% accuracy, “scrubbing” the collective databases to ensure that there are no discrepancies and that the data sets meet the standards of the National Emergency Numbering Association.

lewd and lascivious molestation of a 15-year-old girl. The victim kept diary entries recording the abuse, which occurred while she was living at McIntire’s house. She reported it to family members, including her mother — who revealed that, 27 years before, McIntire had molested the mother as well, but that she hadn’t believed that he would also molest her daughter. When deputies interviewed him, McIntire related specific instances in which he’d touched the victim on her breasts and buttocks. Deputies arrested him.
