Alec Schiess loves his job at Matanzas High School.

COOKING UP A CAREER If anyone doesn’t believe this is the land of opportunity, they haven’t met Alec Schiess.

aybe it’s the twinkling eyes, or the big smile, but meeting Alec Schiess makes you feel good. He speaks English carefully, partially as a result of medical issues from birth, and partially because when he arrived in the U.S. from the Ukraine six years ago, he only knew how to count to 12 and say “Batman” in English. Alec was 14 when he and Sveta, a 10-year-old at the same orphanage, were adopted by Sandy and Diane Ausbrook’s daughter and son-in-law. After three years in North Carolina, Alec came to live with his grandparents in Palm Coast and enrolled at Matanzas High School, a decision that would have a huge impact on his life. Thanksgiving will mark three years since Alec came to Palm Coast. In that time, he has graduated from Matanzas High School, participated in three sports in the Special Olympics — soccer, basketball and bowling — and made the junior varsity soccer team at MHS. Oh, and he got a job at his alma mater. After graduating from MHS in 2015, Alec entered the TRAIL Transition program. The program focuses on Flagler County’s 18- to 22-year-old students with

disabilities, helping them find employment that fits their needs, and the employer’s needs. Last May, Kim Houghton from the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation asked Alec what job he would like to pursue. “I want to be a chef,” he told her. The next thing Alec knew, he was on his way to Orlando for a two-week internship program at the Hyatt Regency. Alec worked 100 hours, elbow-to-elbow with the Hyatt chefs, and came home with a certificate in culinary arts. “If it wasn’t for that lady (Houghton), I wouldn’t have had that chance,” Alec said. “It’s still kind of hard to believe, but I am

thankful for that opportunity because it has opened the doors for me to actually find a job.” Applying for jobs was easy. Deciding which to accept was not. “I had two job offers on one day,” Alec said. “I was actually at the other interview, and the guy went to get the papers, and I got a phone call from Amy at the Government Services Building asking me, ‘Are you ready to work?’ I had to make that decision, whether to work at a private golf course, washing dishes and helping prep, or work with the schools.” “When they told him it would be at Matanzas, his eyes got big and he smiled that smile,” Ausbrooks said. The family discussed the pros and cons of each offer, and the Ausbrooks left the decision up to Alec. “He was distracted at bowling that night,” Ausbrooks said. “And on the way home, he said, ‘Gramps, I have made my decision. I think I want to go to work at the schools because it’s a part-time job and I don’t want to be overwhelmed on my very first job,.’” “I took the school because I thought it was the right place for me,” Alec said. “It’s one of the best schools I have gone to, and the people are just nice there. I feel it’s more like home.” Dr. Kimberli Halliday, TRAIL Transition Coordinator, said Alec’s story is one of many success stories in the program, which custom fits students’ skills and abilities with jobs in the area. Some of the businesses TRAIL has teamed up with include Publix, Lowe’s, Walmart, Golden Corral, Flagler Schools and the Flagler County Property Appraiser. October is Disabled Employee Awareness Month, and Halliday is hoping more businesses will come to her department when looking for staff. “By teaming up with these businesses, we are able to fill a vocational gap,” Halliday said. “We want our students to be as independent as possible.” Halliday said the partnership is an excellent opportunity for the companies. She and members of her team go with the student and do the training until the student is comfortable in the job and the workplace. Then, they “fade out slowly,” Halliday said. “We will go into another room, so we are there, but the student is working on their own,” she said. Students can perform repetitive jobs such as shredding and filing, which frees up employees for other duties. “If you hire one of our students, you are getting a great employee,” Halliday said. “They are dependable, on time, and hard workers.”

Volunteers raise money for Alzheimer’s research.

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

Hundreds of Flagler County residents assembled for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s two-mile walk on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Veterans Park. As the pre-walk ceremony took place, family members, friends and caregivers tearfully mourned for loved ones who’d had Alzheimer’s. Those in attendance included County Commissioner Nate McLaughlin and Flagler Beach City Commissioner Jane Mealy, who have both known people

He and his wife often relieve their friend’s wife of caregiver duties by spending time with him. “At his favorite restaurant, Wendy’s, the other day, he said to me, ‘I know you, don’t I?’” McLaughlin said. “I said, ‘Yes.’ And I was able to communicate with him all the memories we’ve shared together.” Although it’s been 16 years since her father died from Alzheimer’s, an emotional Mealy spoke of the difficulty of watching how the illness affected him in his later years.

ALZHEIMER’S FACTS Alzheimer’s disease is the sixthleading cause of death for adults in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control. There are more than 15.9 million people caring for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia in the country. In 2015, these caregivers provided an estimated 18.1 billion hours of unpaid care valued at $221.3 billion, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

It has raised $53,730 so far. “The money we raise through these walks goes to important research — which is our fastest

way to treatment and cure — and free support services the Association provides to our community in Flagler Beach and the greater Flagler County area,” said Kay Redington, CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association, Central and North Florida Chapter. From deep on my desk, a surprise READERS RESPOND

BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

In most important ways, I’m a clean person. It’s just my desk at work that sometimes gets cluttered. It has gotten to the point that when we have an important visitor coming to the office, Publisher John Walsh has been known to peek his head over my cubicle and remind me to straighten up. He usually tells a few other people to straighten up, too, just so I don’t feel bad. One day this week, though, I straightened up just because. No special occasion. And I was rewarded by finding a check made out to me for $268. It was printed in April. I told my wife, Hailey, about my discovery, expecting praise for bringing home some extra bacon. But she responded with some sarcasm: “Lovely.” It was as if she felt entitled to the money! Considering it was a reimbursement check, she might have a point ... I would say that this experience will change me, but I think my system is actually a good one. I like surprises — especially $268 surprises.

Last week’s sports story about Philip Moultrie, a running back for Matanzas High School’s football team, made a big impression on some of our readers. Moultrie shared his experience as a teen father in the story, written by Sports Editor Jeff Dawsey, and Alison Griffin responded this way on Facebook: “Naomi seems to have amazing parents and a wonderful life! “I had my son, Austin, when I was 17. I still finished high school but had to put college off for a couple years. I eventually finished and now I am a teacher! I didn’t have the help of my parents. I did have Austin’s dad, but we didn’t have much. Barely made ends meet, but we did it! “Austin graduated from Menendez last year and is playing football and getting

world a few years earlier than expected. Life hands everyone blows. Turn those blows into blessings! “It seems like you’ve done a wonderful job so far! And she’s adorable!” Griffin was one of 30,049 people who saw this story on Facebook.

The only pet we’ve ever had in my family was a fish — never a cat or a dog. Usually that’s just fine: My four children are all a bit scared of dogs. But Ellie, 6, apparently wants a puppy. For her homework recently, she was

assigned to read a book about a kid who learns how to train a puppy. Wanting to put her new knowledge to use, she convinced Kennedy, who will turn 2 in November, to be her pupil. Ellie was instructing her to sit and stay when Hailey discovered the activity and put an end to it.

“You can’t train your sister!” Hailey said. I had been wondering why, in the past couple of weeks, Kennedy had been crawling around the floor, panting, her tongue hanging out like a dog. Apparently she’s a fast learner — at least as smart as a dog.

LET TERS

Those ‘street people’ need our help Dear Editor: I am writing in response to Charlotte Smith’s letter on “street people.” She is hoping for something to be done about the vagrants who are starting to infiltrate our city and desecrate it. Has she ever stopped to think that these vagrants are someone’s son, daughter or some other relative? Many may be veterans who are suffering from PTSD or the mentally ill who have nowhere to go since Gov. Scott has cut back on necessary funds for them. Others might be people who have physical illnesses and lost their jobs, thus losing their homes and now have nowhere to live. There are so many reasons they may be there. Our country is great, but it has a very long way to go in assisting our own people who need it here instead of spending our hard earned taxes and sending it overseas to foreign countries. Now it wants to bring thousands of refugees into our country. Where, pray tell, will all of them live? I’m sure our country will assist them as it continues to ignore those special “street people.” We all need to do something about these people, instead of complaining and writing to the Sheriff’s Office to do so. Notify all of our government offices and tell them what you are noting here in Flagler and complaining about. I have. Maybe if enough constituents do so, they will finally

take notice and assist those people by getting the funds to help them. Deep in your heart, you have to know that most of them do not want to be in this position if they had a choice. Law enforcement is not our city’s babysitter. There is enough for them to handle with the crime here such as gangs and drugs. So please stop and think about what you are saying and instead try to help them. A life, any life, is a beautiful thing to waste. KATHERINE GUARDINO Palm Coast

experiences for a School Board member. Myra instituted an annual special education day for parents of exceptional children to facilitate learning about various issues affecting their kids. This event was always well attended and received warm reviews. I cannot think of a more experienced, creative, or fair-minded person than Dr. Myra Middleton-Valentine. I heartily and without reservation endorse her for the Flagler County School Board. PETER LARKIN

Middleton-Valentine for School Board Dear Editor: An educator for 30-plus years, I worked for and with Dr. Myra Middleton-Valentine for seven years. During that time, I came to appreciate Dr. Valentine’s patient willingness to listen to all sides of an issue before making a decision. Once her decision was made, she acted decisively, but always with fairness and equity regarding the people affected by her decision – employees, parents, students. As director of special education and student services, Myra worked with the School Board, other district departments, and schools to ensure that all students’ needs were met. She dealt effectively with legal issues, achieving satisfactory resolution in all cases. As a director, she handled sizable budgets, curriculum matters, and employee relations, all of which are good

favored the plan, and that resident wasn’t even included in the taxing district. Mr. Ericksen correctly said he was “a listener,” and he did not hear anyone who spoke who wanted it. He voted against it. He did listen to us. I don’t know a soul who wants it or who thinks it is needed. This is not a countywide tax, but Flagler County citizens should know that any part of the county could be so taxed on a “special” issue. This is big government in a small county. The County Commission needs to rescind this tax.

Editor’s Note: According to Flagler County spokesperson Julie Murphy, Phase 1 of the project cost $7 million and was already spent, at no cost to residents. Phases 2 and 3 could carry a cost of $8.9 million, but less than $1.5 million would come from the taxing district. In addition to the $600 maximum annually, lots in this district will also be subject to the North MalaCompra Basin assessment of $30 for the first year with the same annual maximum of $75, for capital improvements and maintenance.

Dear Editor: The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners passed a drainage project on Sept. 12 for Marineland Acres. It will cost at least $7 million and perhaps much more. Since it is a non-ad valorem tax, every resident of the area was to pay $975. This was reduced to $600 by opposition of the residents at this meeting. The present tax would increase my real estate taxes by 39% (or by 56% if the original amount proposed was passed). It would run for 20+ years, so our children will be the ones to pay for it since my husband and I are in our 70s. Only one commissioner, Charlie Ericksen, voted against it. This, after of the 50 residents who attended, 18 spoke against and only one

Sheriff’s Office seeks help to find purse snatcher Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies are seeking the public’s help to find a robber who snatched a woman’s purse in the Walmart parking lot in the middle of the afternoon. The robbery happened at about 2:42 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Walmart at 174 Cypress Point Parkway in Palm Coast, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. The victim had left the store and was loading her groceries from a shopping cart into her trunk when the robbery occurred. She’d left her purse in the top of the cart, and, as she was loading the groceries, a silver, newer-model Hyundai Sonata pulled up and a woman stepped out of the passenger seat, grabbed the purse and then jumped back into the car, which sped off toward Palm Coast

Parkway. Deputies did not know which direction the car went. The victim reported the robbery at 2:42 p.m., and told deputies that the purse held her cash, credit cards, driver’s license and prescription medicine. Deputies processed the scene of the robbery and expect to release surveillance video. In the news release, the Sheriff’s Office reminded residents to be aware of surroundings when shopping and when in a parking lot, and to be a good witness by being able to provide a description of suspects and/ or vehicles. The Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with information about the purse snatching or any other crimes in Flagler County to call the Sheriff’s Office at 313-4911. Or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-8477. Crime Stoppers tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

3-year-old found safe after escaping escapes from Roma Court Academy A 3-year-old boy was discovered walking in the middle of Palm Coast Parkway on Sept. 23, after he escaped from the Roma Court Academy’s recreation area. The responding deputy reported that a Chinese food delivery person spotted the child and contacted Roma Court, which started to search for him. Then, a woman who was driving on Palm Coast Parkway saw the boy and stopped to help him. The deputy arrived and brought him back to Roma Court, safe and sound. The Fire Department also assisted, according to Jim Troiano, of the Sheriff’s Office. The deputy later discovered that the boy, whose name was withheld, had only been attending the preschool for two days. He had told his teacher more than once that day that he wanted to go and look for his father at the hospital because his father was sick. Later, the father, Jackie Gentry, of Ormond Beach, was

contacted by the Sheriff’s Office, and he said he wasn’t surprised that the boy had escaped. He said the boy was like a raccoon — “very fast and skilled at opening doors and latches,” which he had done at home in the past, as well. Gentry also told the Sheriff’s Office that he has a friend who works at Roma Court and feels confident that it’s a safe place, with no supervision problems. Roma Court administration sent the following statement to the Palm Coast Observer: “An incident involving a child occurred today at RCA. The child is perfectly fine and unharmed. The appropriate authorities have been notified, and RCA is complying with all obligations under controlling law and rule regarding the incident. RCA is meeting all requirements to report the facts of this incident timely, fully and truthfully to the appropriate authorities. It is important to note that this incident did not arise from any violation of RCA’s duties owed to students, parents or the law. The father of the child has asked that this incident not be further publicized. RCA will honor his wishes.” Troiano said there was no indication from the deputy’s report

that Gentry was in the hospital, as opposed to what the child thought. Gentry responded to a phone call from the Observer but declined to comment. The Sheriff’s Office informed the Department of Children and Families of the incident as a precaution. The deputy also walked the route that was taken by the child and examined the safety procedures at Roma Court. The teacher who was supervising the rec area was attending to another child when the 3-year-old boy escaped, according to the deputy’s account. There is a dead bolt on the sturdy, 6- to 8-foot-tall gate at the recreation area, but the deadbolt was not activated when the deputy checked. “The outcome could have been much different,” Troiano said. “We could have seen a crash where the child was hit or killed, or he could have gotten lost in the woods. Our thanks go out to this motorist for her quick thinking, as well as the delivery guy. This is the ‘see something, say something’ philosophy. We’re happy that the information provided was, and that we had a peaceful ending to a situation that could have been much worse.”

Flagler Beach resident Lory Yazurlo, 53 and former owner of a 20-acre pig sanctuary in western Flagler County, died in the early morning hours of Sept. 22 after a van she was in caught fire on John Anderson Highway. Yazurlo, who was disabled and used a wheelchair, was unable to escape the van. Two calls came in to the Sheriff’s Office’s dispatch center starting at about 2:03 a.m. Sept. 22: Callers reported a vehicle on fire in the 3400 block of John Anderson Highway, fully engulfed, with a person still inside. A Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived at 2:05 a.m. and found the 1997 Ford Econoline E150 on fire in the southbound lane, but wasn’t able to get close to it. Moments later, a fire engine arrived and began putting out the flames. One of the 911 callers, the deputy wrote in a report, “was extremely upset and asked if I was able to ‘get her out?’” The caller said that her friend,

9A

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2016

Yazurlo, was inside the van and was paraplegic and used a wheelchair. By the time the flames were put out, Yazurlo was dead, the deputy wrote. The investigation has been turned over to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Yazurlo ran the Pig Tales Sanctuary in rural western Flagler County for about 15 years. Officials had all of the pigs — around 400 — euthanized in 2010 after tests showed that some carried diseases.

Former Staples employee arrested in connection with Staples robbery A 27-year-old Bunnell man turned himself in at the Flagler County jail Sept. 22 on charges that he’d robbed the Staples in Palm Coast at gunpoint more than a year ago, on Sept. 11, 2015. Deputies had been looking into Bunnell resident Brandon Hubbert’s possible connection with the crime ever since a Staples employee mentioned him to a deputy last October, saying that Hubbert was a former Staples employee from several years prior and that he fit the description of the robber. Hubbert turned himself in at the jail at about 12:30 a.m. Sept. 22.

he last “Amens” were said, heads were raised, and a police officer waited to direct traffic from the Palm Coast United Methodist Church parking lot onto Belle Terre Parkway. But the parking lot remained full. Instead of heading to their cars, most of the congregation headed to the fellowship hall and classrooms to participate in the church’s annual Day of Service on Sunday, Sept. 25. “We have more volunteers than we expected, so we have doubled our goal of 10,000 meals to 20,000,” said Michele Seyfert, an organizer. Seyfert said 150 men, women and children had signed up for the assembly-line process of filling plastic bags with dehydrated and dry food. Even after the instruc-

tions had been given and spaces were filled, volunteers continued to flow through the doors. Microphone in hand, Stephanie Sheffield, assistant program manager from Stop Hunger Now, explained the process to the volunteers lined up at tables throughout the hall. The bags of dried food may not look appetizing to those with a refrigerator full of food waiting at home, but Sheffield explained that the contents of the bags — assembled and sent to groups around the world — are often the one and only nutritious meal someone will get that day. “This is more than a meal,” Sheffield said. “When children get a healthy meal, the attendance rate in school goes up, graduation rates go up and they have better opportunity to get jobs.” Before the bags are passed across the table to those who hot sealed them shut, the bags are weighed. This explained a bit of advice that Sheffield had the crowd repeat back to her – “The rice goes in last.” If a bag is too light, volunteers can add rice; too heavy, and they can subtract it. In other classrooms there were additional service opportunities, and one group left the church to stock shelves at a food pantry in

Bunnell. The volunteers filling Blessing Bags for the homeless finished their job, and began looking for other duties to help with. The bags had been filled with dayto-day items most people take for granted. Love bags were being filled for victims at the Family Life Center. “This is our first time doing this with Stop Hunger Now, and we are thrilled to be doing it,” said Lyn Preat, the church’s office manager. Two new trucks will be delivered within a month, and the option to buy a third will come before the City Council for approval at a future meeting. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Personal Interest:

Palm Coast will be getting two new fire trucks in the coming weeks, and might get a third next spring. The purchase of the third truck has not yet been formally approved by the City Council, but council members didn’t voice objections during a City Council workshop Sept. 27 when Palm Coast Fire Chief Mike Beadle brought the proposal before the council in a presentation. Council members will vote at a future City Council meeting on whether to buy the $259,678 truck. The two trucks the city has already purchased and that will soon be delivered will be used at Palm Coast Fire Station 25 — the main station at 1250 Belle Terre Parkway — and at Fire Station 23 at 5150 Belle Terre Parkway. Both of those trucks cost $256,678. Beadle traveled to the South Dakota manufacturing plant that is building the two trucks earlier this month. “We did the final inspection on those two trucks. We’re just waiting for them to come to Florida,” Beadle said. “We should have them in the station probably within the next month or so. … We’re very impressed and very happy with the two trucks we just went up and saw.” The third truck, if the council decides to buy it, will be used at the Indian Trails station to replace Engine 21, which the city will keep but move into a backup position, Beadle said. Backup fire trucks are used when all of the

frontline trucks are out on calls, or are being repaired. The two trucks that will soon be delivered and the proposed third truck are all built on a commercial chassis, like those used for longhaul trucking. Buying commercial chassis trucks, rather than custom-built fire trucks, saves the city about $200,000 per truck — bids for custom trucks ranged from $424,301 to $472,921 — but the commercial trucks last about half as long as custom trucks for daily frontline work, Beadle said. City officials considered buying or leasing a used truck, but decided not to, fearing they might get a truck with mechanical problems. Beadle has favored custom chassis trucks in the past, and hopes to return to buying those, rather than commercial chassis trucks, in the future. Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts asked him why he had a “change of heart about commercial chassis versus custom chassis” for the two trucks that will soon be delivered and for the proposed third truck purchase. “I really don’t have a change of heart,” Beadle replied. He explained the problems with the commercial trucks: They’re built for long hauls, he said, so stopand-go driving within a community “just tears those trucks up.” The city has one that it used for just seven years before having to replace the chassis. But, Beadle said, the city won’t be using these new commercial chassis trucks for frontline work every day, and hopes to get about 15 years of use out of them. “They’re going to be running frontline a couple days here, a couple days there,” he said. “My change of heart is that for the operation and for what we need to do, this is the way to go — we have the backups to be there when we need them.”

Palm Coast dedicates soccer field in memory of Frank Meeker

Thousands of dollars of wine stolen from Publix

BRIEFS

PalmCoastObserver.com

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2016

A trio of thieves stole more than $3,000 in fine wine and champagne from three Publix supermarkets Sept. 22. The first theft was at the store at 800 Belle Terre Parkway, at about 4:30 p.m. Three people walked into the store and stole about $600 worth of wine and champagne. The manager at that store reported the crime on Sept. 25, telling a deputy that another store — the Publix at Island Walk on Palm Coast Parkway — had also been targeted by two of the thieves from the trio that stole from the Belle Terre store. At the Island Walk location, the two thieves hid 47 bottles of fine wine and champagne — Moet and Clicquot — in stolen reusable Publix bags. They went cheaper on their dinner, stealing $8 worth of fried chicken. At the third location, at the Publix at 800 Belle Terre Parkway, the thieves almost got caught when a store employee saw them try to leave with unpurchased wine. They dropped the wine and fled, pushing past the employee.

A sign marking the Frank Meeker Field was unveiled at a dedication ceremony Sept. 27. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Local residents and officials crowded around the sign marking the newly designated Frank Meeker Field at the Indian Trails Sports Complex Sept. 27, joining hands and then raising their arms to shout out the Latin slogan that Meeker — a longtime youth soccer coach who served as a city councilman and who was a county commissioner at the time of his death this past July — always taught his players: Carpe diem! Seize the day. Speaking to the crowd from a podium to which was affixed, with masking tape, a Dunkin’ Donuts coffee cup in honor of Meeker’s love of the coffee brand, Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts turned to the youth soccer players who’d come to the event in their jerseys, and said he’d wondered earlier that evening what Meeker would say to them if he were there. Netts listed some of the life lessons that can come from playing the game: Understanding the value of practice and hard work, being a team player, winning and losing with equal dignity, contributing 100% and always continuing to learn. “I hope it’s not lost on anyone here this afternoon that if you look

closely at these soccer life lessons, each one of them describes Frank’s approach to his own life,” Netts said. “He practiced his skills to make himself better. He valued being a team player. He won and lost with dignity. He continued to learn in every facet of his life. Soccer was truly a metaphor for Frank’s life, and it’s a fitting tribute that we honor him here today by dedicating this soccer field.” Meeker’s wife, Debbie, recalled that her husband didn’t know much about soccer when he began coaching — but that didn’t stop him.

Frank Meeker’s wife Debbie Meeker speaks at a ceremony Sept. 27 to dedicate a soccer field at the Indian Trails Sports Complex in her husband’s memory.

“He just studied … and researched everything, anything he could get his hands on,” she said. “He just studied and practiced and he just always pushed the girls to always give their best. And it was amazing how they would come to him and talk to him, whether it was school issues, boy issues, if it was family issues, because they felt that they could come and talk to him. … And they still, when they go off to college, they would come back.” Joshua Meeker, one of Frank Meeker’s sons, said after the ceremony that he was moved by seeing the faces of so many people whose lives his father had helped shape. He recalled how hard his father had pushed the girls he coached on his soccer teams to work hard and succeed. “What he expected from his biological kids, he expected from the girls,” Joshua Meeker said. Kayla Klufas played for the Flagler Firestorms, a youth soccer team coached by Meeker, for four years. She told the audience at the dedication ceremony that she would always remember Meeker “as the happy-go-lucky coach, mentor and friend with a huge laugh and a signature smile.” “For over a decade, he coached hundreds of girls and inspired us to be better sportsmen, while teaching us bits of Latin, world history and of course football,” she said. “I’m just one of the many people who was inspired by Frank through soccer, through church or through his time serving on our local government.” Meeker was first elected to the Palm Coast City Council in 2007. He was elected to the Flagler County Commission in 2012.

SPORTS FPC swimmer Lauria breaks record that stood 34 years

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

T

Rivalry game lives up to the hype

Deidra Burkley blocks former teammate Jaelyn Lawrence’s kill.

Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast go the distance in round 2 of the crosstown volleyball showdown. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

T

he Matanzas Lady Pirates survived another five-set match against crosstown rival FPC to win 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-13 on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Matanzas. As the match swung back and forth with nearly every point and set, cheers from the FPC and Matanzas supporters did the same. Each section wanted to outdo the other, although Matanzas as the home crowd held the advantage, and both sections made the competition on the court that much better. “It’s definitely a rivalry,” said Dawn Moses, the Lady Pirates’ coach. “These two teams definitely bring their best games on this night. That just makes for an exciting match. It was exciting there (at FPC), and it was exciting here.” For the second time this season, the girls went to five sets. Last time around, it was the Bulldogs who only needed a set to win it, but the Pirates stormed back to win. This time, the Bulldogs rallied to force a final set but were unable to finish the comeback. “You know it’s going to be crazy, going into the fifth set with a rival team,” said Ashley Dietrich, FPC’s head coach. “They ran off at us a little bit 5-1, and that was a big part. We just got outhustled.”

Kierra Jones lets off a loud roar after the Bulldogs force a fifth set.

While her team did pull out the thriller, Moses didn’t believe her Pirates played their best game. “We missed a lot of serves tonight, and that hasn’t been like us for the last couple of games,” she said. “But I told them it takes a good team to be able to not play well and still win the match.”

GAME STATS Matanzas: Kaylee Mandt led all players with 18 kills and three blocks. Jaelyn Lawrence had eight kills, and Alyssia Piaz had six kills. FPC: Jael Jara finished with 13 kills and 26 assists. Angelica Collazo also had 13 kills. Kierra Jones had six kills and three ace, and Shelby Beck had 11 digs.

he chance to break a record always makes a competitor work harder. Flagler Palm Coast sophomore Sam Lauria discovered this, although previous disappointing results nearly thwarted her goal. Just a few months prior to Sept. 12, Lauria considered quitting the sport of swimming. Competing at this past Summer Seniors Championships with her club team. “I was frustrated at myself because I could’ve done better,” she said. “I just didn’t get the results I wanted.” Lauria spent the weekend at Lake Okeechobee, and there she got away from the pool and relaxed — something she hadn’t done in a while. She had worked herself too hard, and swimming became more work than fun. With a renewed mindset, Lauria jumped back in the pool to work on the next goal. Now, in her first year with FPC — and second year overall in the sport — she has accomplished one of her goals, breaking the 34-year-old record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:25.31. Flagler County school teacher Diane Howes held the previous record. “I wasn’t surprised, but I was very proud,” Lauria said. “It took a lot of hard work, and I’m glad I had my coaches and teammates cheering for me to do it.” “I cried, because I was so excited for her,” said Marie-Anne Johansson, her coach. “It was awesome. I know it was something she really wanted, and she’s been working like crazy.” It’s crazy to think Lauria has conquered a record that has stood for over three decades while competing for only two years. She didn’t even like the sport at the beginning. It wasn’t until a year later when she returned to the water that something sparked. “I felt a connection with the water,” Lauria said. Lauria has two more years to swim for the Lady Bulldogs, so we might be watching a future swim star. Lauria already has the work ethic. If she’s not at school, she’s in the pool.

Matanzas wins 31-3. The Pirates have become the team that other teams hate to play. Other than last year at Mainland, Matanzas has stifled every team it’s played in the last two seasons, and its offense has actually gotten better. If New Smyrna’s 47-3 loss to FPC is indication of how this game might go, the Pirates are going to run through the Barracudas.

Flagler Palm Coast (1-3) vs. Sandalwood Sandalwood wins 33-13. The Bulldogs play one of the most difficult schedules in Florida football. Their very best is demanded of them weekly, but they’re not able to compete with most of their opponents. While they played an exceptional game against New Smyrna, FPC will host undefeated Sandalwood this week. Other than their 17-14 win over Spruce Creek, the Saints have scored at least 35 points in all of their games while holding all of their opponents to 14 or lower.

Seabreeze (0-4) at Pine Ridge Pine Ridge wins 27-3. Every week it’s the same story: Seabreeze has no offense. The Sandcrabs failed to score

Mainland wins 47-10. The Bucs have played a number of state-ranked opponents, and they continue to show why there are ranked in the upper echelon of all classes. Some journalists picked Apopka to upset Mainland, but the Bucs did to them what they do to all the other teams last week. They put up 40 points and dare their opponents to keep up against their defense – and it never happens. This game should be a cake walk for Mainland.

Father Lopez (1-3) at Trinity Prep Lopez wins 31-21. The Green Wave hasn’t been able to stop anyone this season. The defense allowed 35 points in Lopez’s only win. And the offense has struggled at times, but, as it showed in its previous game against John Carroll Catholic, it can score. Down 24-0 early in the game, the Green Wave put up 19 straight points – and then went scoreless for the rest of the game. Both teams have struggled to stop other teams, but Lopez will score enough in the end to get the win.

Patrick Maxcy at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

ALI

PAINTER CAPTURES JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

O

ne day in January, Patrick Maxcy received a call from the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky, asking him to be the guest artist of the year. “At first I thought it was a joke,” said Maxcy, a 1999 graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School who now lives in Colorado. But it was no joke. Casey Harden, manager of collections, had been searching for just the right artist for a year. She searched for “humanitarian artist,” and she discovered Maxcy, who describes himself on his website as an artist, painter, muralist, adventurer and humanitarian. “I loved his art immediately,” she said. “I love the concept of street art and murals, but he does it in such a way you become engulfed in his art. Reading Patrick’s story also made me begin to think of Muhammad and his principles in a whole new light. Many people wouldn’t think of environmental rights and Muhammad in the category, but when you read the dedication and passion Patrick had for his own causes, as well as the causes of the nonprofits he was painting for, I thought he and Muhammad lined up perfectly. I also like the shock and awe that our visitors would get when they

see a painting of an octopus to describe Muhammad. Patrick put a new perspective on Muhammad in a very unique way.” She added: “It was never just about Patrick’s art. His art is incredible, but what really stuck out to us was his need to help others.” Maxcy got his start at FPC, taking classes from Ed Beckett and Sheila Crawford, who retired several years ago. “She was a big influence on him,” Beckett said. “After graduating (college), he taught a couple of years at FPC in Sheila Crawford’s room; then he went to Colorado. He came full circle.” The six murals — each 10-by4½ feet — in Maxcy’s Ali exhibit, “Ali to Me,” involved more than putting brush to canvas. “Initially they were considering a 100-foot mural that would wrap around the center,” Maxcy said. “Then it was decided that six murals depicting the core values Ali lived by would be painted.” The six core principles are confidence, conviction, dedication, respect, giving and spirituality. Maxcy was scheduled to meet with Ali, but the boxer and humanitarian died on June 3, the same night Maxcy was at his own art show opening in Colorado. Maxcy still got to “meet” Ali through his personal journals, and talking to the boxer’s fam-

ily and friends. He used what he learned to interpret Ali’s life and tell the story. “Mostly I learned about the humanitarian aspect, and what he has done to affect other people, not his boxing,” Maxcy said. While his art was the focus of the opening, Maxcy was in awe of the six humanitarians of the year selected by the center, who were being honored that weekend. Awardees were from the states, as well as Pakistan, Israel and Germany, and several of them were named in Forbes Magazine as the world’s 30 top social entrepreneurs. “They were amazing, and I spent a lot of time with them,” Maxcy said. He describes himself as a fast

painter. Using acrylics and house paint, he painted the murals in July and August, each taking him about three days. “Normally I am working eight to 10 projects at a time,” he said. “But because of the massiveness of this project, I didn’t work on anything else.” Did he find himself overwhelmed or nervous when creating the project, or attending the opening? “I could paint all day,” Maxcy said. “I was more nervous about what to wear.”

So many wonderful stories about African greys! Thank you.

JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

Courtesy photos

Elliot is a timneh African grey.

This week I will feature some of the responses I have received about African greys in Palm Coast. A couple of you asked when Rosie began talking. She was talking when we adopted her. Since she is adopted we can only guess as to how old she is. Seeing how she has developed over the past 10 years we have had her, I think she could be about 25 years old. Three new African greys roosting in Palm Coast live with Michele Evans. Evans moved to Palm Coast with one Congo African grey and two timneh African greys. They range in age from 17 to 35 years old. She adopted all of them. The birds have always been in front of a window or sliding glass door. They enjoy relaxing music and have their own TV. Unlike my Rosie, they are very quiet, perhaps because

"Pretty bird" is more than an expression with Oscar, an African grey parrot.

there are three of them? Disney is their favorite TV channel. The only time they get noisy is when they want to go to bed. They are insistent and will scream until all of the lights and electronics are off and the drapes are closed. This happens as soon as the sun sets. Being a good sport, Michel goes to her room to give them the peace and quiet they crave. Maureen Albrecht and Maxine have been together for 17

Gabby is an African grey new to Palm Coast.

years, since Maxine was a baby. Albrecht thought her grey, Maxine, would never talk, even though she left recordings of her voice and different songs for the bird to listen to when she was gone. After about a year, everything changed suddenly. Maxine started talking and hasn’t stopped. Maxine does pluck her feathers, a habit that can be a result of stress or even hereditary. The Albrechts have moved a lot in the 17 years, but Palm Coast became home six years ago when they retired. Like my Rosie, Maxine has moods, and, if she isn’t in the mood to talk, she won’t. There are times she needs her space. Maxine sings “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and “Old MacDonald” and others. She knows the children and grand-

children’s names. She has a “cousin” named Jerry, a conure who visits from time to time. Conures are loud birds and often screech. “When we tell her Jerry’s coming and, ‘What are you going to say?’ She says, “SSHH Jerry, be quiet!” While Rosie will warn visitors, “Watch out, I bite,” call the dogs and cat, she doesn’t say full sentences like Maxine. Maxine’s repertoire includes “I am going upstairs and take a shower” and is always asking, “Can I come out?” Christina Rois-Mendez shares her home with 5-yearold Oscar. Oscar chews on bones. He’s a lucky bird. Since he doesn’t have to share the house with curious dogs and a cat, he doesn’t have to be in a cage. He has a play stand, and he gets to spend part of his day in a screened canopy with his humans. He enjoys chewing on cereal boxes and throwing balls and chasing them throughout the house. Being a bird with no boundaries, he also serves as an alarm clock by waking RoisMendez up at 7 a.m. and then running to the kitchen to wait for his breakfast. Oscar sings and chirps but hasn’t started talking — yet. He makes a high-pitched whistle when he senses danger, a cat or hawk outside. Evenings are spent in front of the TV with the family. Tradition IN PALM COAST Chabad of Palm Coast commissions the first Torah scroll of Palm Coast. JACQUE ESTES

DID YOU KNOW?

COMMUNITY EDITOR

“It’s going to be exciting,” Rabbi Levi Ezagui said. “The last time I saw the Torah, I was a little kid.” Ezagui is the director of the Chabad of Palm Coast, and the excitement was the celebration of the first Torah scroll completion of Palm Coast. The Pine Lakes Golf clubhouse dining room was filled with members of the Jewish community from around the State on Sunday, Sept. 25. Rabbi Levi Vogel of the Chabad of St. Augustine unrolled the scroll and inked the final letters as other rabbis were invited up to take part. The final letters of the scroll were written by Moshe Chaim Guttman, as it was done for the first time, 3,300 years ago, by Moses. “The scroll is an essential addition to the local community. It represents the unbroken chain of Jewish tradition and survival,” Ezagui said. “The ancient wisdom contained in this scroll is the essence of our identity as Jews. Possessing our own Torah scroll is a cause for great joy.”

An authentic Torah scroll is a mindboggling masterpiece of labor and skill. Comprising between 62 and 84 sheets of parchment-cured, tanned, scraped and prepared according to exact Torah law specifications, and containing exactly 304,805 letters, the resulting handwritten scroll takes months to complete. Timeless dictums hold for a certified Torah scribe and everything from the character of the scribe to the quality of the parchment and type of ink are taken into account. The slightest error voids the entire 54-portion parchment.
