BRAYDEN IS BACK! For most kids, going to school is something you have to do, not always something you want to do. But for Brayden Henry, just showing up is a victory. Brayden, 6, is winning his battle with leukemia. He showed up to the first-grade open house at Bunnell Elementary School with his mother, Brittney Hedetniemi, and had a big smile on his face. “He told me, ‘Mom, I’m strong again,’” Hedetniemi said. “So he’s playing baseball this season.” Brayden has had a lot of support from the school. Last year, after missing most of the school year because of his treatments, he was honored with “Bray Day,” and many of his classmates wore orange for leukemia awareness. Brayden pointed out that, soon, the hyper pigmentation “freckles” that have appeared on his forehead from laser treatments will also be gone. Good luck, Brayden! Glad you’re back in school.

completed by the end of the school year,” Peterson said. “Starting next year, the kids will come out and do whatever Vinnie is teaching them at that time; they can do a mason corner, frame up an interior wall, or frame windows and doors,” DeLorenzo said. “Instead of being in a tiny classroom, where they really don’t have any room for that, we are going to have them outside, where they can learn how to build full-size, and learn how to do all of those things.” Each year, a house will be built on part of the slab, and then torn down to make room for the next class to start again.

onstruction workers, their white rubber boots sinking into poured concrete, stood ready with rakes, shovels and levels as the next batch of concrete sloshed down the chute. The crew was working on a raised concrete slab behind Matanzas High School. There was little chatter, just the sound of rakes scraping and the truck’s barrel rotating. Everyone was focused on the job at hand. Then the Matanzas High School bell rang, and Vinnie Oliveri’s career and technical construction students continue on to their next classes. Jason DeLorenzo — a Palm Coast city councilman and the government services director for the Flagler Home Builders Association — was on site, as was Debi Peterson, the executive officer. They were at the school ensuring there would be a “next generation” of skilled construction workers. “This is our first collaboration with the high school,” DeLorenzo said. “We are already working with the school district in all five elementary schools with the Brick Builders Club.” MHS junior Ethan Caballeros admitted he initially signed up for Oliveri’s class because it sounded easy, and he liked building things. “We were building bird houses, and then it started getting interesting my second year,” Ethan said. “My second year was when

it started growing into this.” LeAsia Lugo, a junior, said she took the class “because I like building stuff.” “My mom grew up independent, and down the road, if I have to do something, I will know how to do it,” she said. “ I won’t need a man or someone else to do it for me.” DeLorenzo said he and the FHBA approached the high school 18 months ago about becoming involved in the construction tech program. “We are advancing it from

shop class to construction class,” DeLorenzo said. “They are lucky to have Vinnie Oliveri as the teacher. He is a former home builder. He knows from start to finish how to build a house, so that’s where this focus on construction is coming from.” The raised foundation the classes worked on will serve two purposes. Half of the area will be used to house a shed. The second half will be for students next year and beyond to build a house from the ground up. “The shed will be built and

Brick Builders clubs are extracurricular activities at the elementary school level, held either before or after school. The students receive a visit from FHBA members who introduce them to “building 101,” explaining how different job skills are needed to build an entire house. The clubs build Lego houses which are judged by FHBA. The top home from each school is featured in the organization’s annual Parade of Homes. The collaboration is in direct response to a trend DeLorenzo has seen: a dwindling construction labor force. “Through the recession we lost a lot of ‘— and Sons’ family businesses. The recession hit

smooth it out. The sophomore has some construction experience. Julian’s father built houses, and Julian has helped him pour concrete, and build sheds and pump houses, at home. What is his advice to anyone interested in taking Oliveri’s class? “Look forward to doing hard work,” Julian said. “There will be fun days, and then there are other days that you have to get your stuff done.” Debbie Butler, now a senior, was on Coach Oliveri’s softball team when she heard about the program. “I grew up with a lot of boys, and I like to be outside and build stuff. It’s fun,” she said. Sophomore Kayla Bird isn’t sure how she got involved in the class. She didn’t sign up for the elective, but it was on her schedule her freshman year. “I didn’t want it at first,” Kayla admitted. “But then we started doing things and I liked it, so I stayed.” One volunteer, Mannix Leach, is a graduate of Matanzas and of Oliveri’s class. After some time in the military, he returned to do what Oliveri had recommended while he was in high school — go into construction. “He’s been a great mentor for me, and that’s the reason I came back,” Leach said.

so hard, people left the business or retrained in something else,” DeLorenzo said. “We are working on this kindergarten-to-career program to get the kids interested in construction, to make sure we can fill our staff needs.” Not to be left out, the middle school students are participating for the first time this year. “This year Buddy Taylor Middle School started a builder’s club,” DeLorenzo said. “The first half of the year, these Matanzas kids are prefabbing picnic tables. They are doing all of the cutting and drilling, and they will deliver them to Buddy Taylor and those kids will assemble them.” “They’ve already delivered them,” Peterson said to a surprised DeLorenzo. “They were supposed to be delivered Oct. 1, but they are ahead of schedule.” The tables will be used at the school as additional outside lunchtime seating. Buddy Taylor and Matanzas will also help build this year’s Santa’s Village at the Rotary Club’s Fantasy of Lights in Town Center.

School. A former custom home builder in the area, he sold his company in order to prepare the next generation. “I am not a Marine by any means, but I run a tight ship. I was raised by a military father. I expect that when it’s time for work, that’s all we do,” Oliveri said. “I could be making six figures a year compared to what I make. I am giving them all of me, and I expect them to give me all of them in return.” Oliveri tells his students that after four years, there is a prize: job placement. “If you are all in, I promise you there’s a prize at the end of it,” Oliveri said. “Whether you go to college for it or you don’t, you can have a career.” Not all of the lessons are physical. Oliveri said he gets into the business aspects, and the students learn what it takes to form a C corporation and S corporation. “We are trying to put Matanzas High School and Flagler County on the map for having the best program in the state of Florida, and hopefully nationally,” Oliveri said.

Two Zika cases reported in Flagler County Two travel-related Zika cases were reported in Flagler County Sept. 15, according to the website of the Florida Department of Health. The two people infected had recently traveled to Nicaragua, and Florida Department of Health staff believe they contracted the disease there, Health Department spokeswoman Sarah Revell said. The Health Department would not say whether the two infected people were male or female, how old they were, or which city they live in. “It is very important for residents to know these two cases are travel-related, meaning the patients did not contract Zika locally and that they contracted the virus overseas,” Revell wrote in an email to the Palm Coast Observer. “Since these are Flagler’s first cases of Zika, the county has been added to the Declaration of Public Health Emergency.” Revell said the Health Department works with local mosquito control districts to follow up after it discovers Zika cases in Florida. The department advises Zika patients to avoid mosquito bites while they’re symptomatic. There are eight Zika cases in Volusia County, four in St. Johns County and none in Putnam County, according to the Florida Department of Health website. Miami-Dade has by far the most cases, with 219, and Broward County is second, with 109.

The mosquitoes that spread Zika bite during the day, not at night. Flagler’s two Zika cases are travel-related.

For most of the people who are symptomatic — and only one in five infected people are — Zika is a “mild illness” that resolves itself a week, according to the Department of Health website. Its danger lies in its connection to the condition of microcephaly in newborns born to infected mothers. According to the Health Department: “Signs and symptoms of Zika fever may include: acute onset of low-grade fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis (reddening of eye), body aches, headache, eye pain, and vomiting. Treatment is symptomatic since there is no specific treatment against the virus. Illness typically resolves within a week. … The Ministry of Health of Brazil has reported an increase in the numbers of newborns with microcephaly in areas experiencing Zika virus outbreaks.” There are 87 Zika cases in Florida involving pregnant women, and 671 cases not involving pregnant women, according to statistics published on the Florida Department of Health website Sept. 21. Zika is spread through mosquito bites and through sexual contact. 214013

So long, Pennsylvania Club A miniature community is no more, after 25 years.

BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

When I got an invitation to speak at the Pennsylvania Club luncheon, I was happy to accept. Then I was told I would be the last speaker. Ever. The club, which started in about 1991, had run its course,

Sheriff campaign signs stolen Dear Editor: I am writing this letter to inform your readers of a disturbing event that has taken place numerous times during my campaign for Flagler County sheriff. Approximately 20 of my campaign lawn signs, “Dougherty for Sheriff,” have been stolen from locations throughout Flagler County. The most recent theft took place in front of the Palm Coast Bowling Lanes on Old Kings Road, where 10 signs were stolen. The owners of the bowling lanes are great people who allow Flagler candidates to display their signs. They informed me that they did not remove the signs. The city of Palm Coast also informed me that my signs were in a legal display zone, and that they did not remove them. I then filed a stolen-property complaint with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. As the only NPA candidate running for office of sheriff, I have made a decision not to accept any political donations. Therefore, I have paid for my campaign signs with my own money. The persons responsible for this are committing the crimes of petit larceny, possession of stolen property, and criminal mischief — all misdemeanors under Florida law. The person or group of people responsible for this are also no better than the crimi-

and lack of interest in filling leadership positions and participating in club outings had led them to decide to dissolve. Before my remarks, I was able to meet with a few of the club members. I met Sam Pobiak, who married into the club five years ago — both she and her husband were married for the third time, and both are 87 years old. I met Anne Kohl, who was one of the original members. She joined because she had just moved to Palm Coast and was looking to become part of the community. Dot McKenney was also an

nals I arrested as a New York Police Department officer. If their goal is to discourage me or remove my name from the sheriff’s campaign, they are sadly mistaken. Trying to sabotage the efforts of an American citizen trying to improve their community is a disgrace. I urge anyone who has information about stolen or damaged campaign signs to contact the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. TOM DOUGHERTY Palm Coast

We need to do something about the street people in Palm Coast Dear Editor: I sincerely hope something is going to be done about the vagrants who are starting to infiltrate our beautiful and clean city. When I tried to get the Sheriff’s Office to do something about it, they refused, saying it’s OK for these street people to camp out with their filth and mess around the stores where shop. Apparently it’s OK for them to panhandle, cause traffic tie-ups and generally make a nuisance of themselves. (Although since it’s our taxes which pay for the streets and parks, isn’t it our property they’re desecrating?) If the police won’t do anything about it now, it’s only going to get worse. Much worse.

original member, and she said she would miss the club, but noted that there are a lot more things to do in Palm Coast now than there used to be in the early 1990s. “I’m going to

Soon, we will be having the same problems as Daytona, and we really don’t want that, do we? I can only hope that whoever gets elected as the new sheriff will step up and do the right thing. If so, whoever pledges to get those street people out of our town sure gets my vote. Maybe the new mayor and City Council will help by passing better ordinances and laws so law enforcement can do their job. Let us hope this problem will be stopped soon before it escalates. Palm Coast is a beautiful city, and we want to keep it that way. CHARLOTTE SMITH Palm Coast

Why I’m voting for Middleton-Valentine Dear Editor: In November, the voters of Flagler County have the opportunity to elect an outstanding educator to the School Board: Dr. Myra Middleton-Valentine. I had the privilege of working with Dr. Middleton-Valentine for nine years as parent liaison between the Flagler County school system and the parents and guardians of students with special needs. From her position as director of special education, she was able to help to provide the most appropriate educational opportunities to these students in a professional and

miss it,” she said, “but what are you going to do?” Then she joked, “Do you want to be our president?” Sadly, as a native of lowly Connecticut, I’m not eligible. In her closing remarks, the real club president, Eileen Bentzley, encouraged all to keep up their friendships, and indeed there was a good indication it would happen, as she announced she was going to visit a member in the hopsital. It was humbling to step into their community just as it was coming to a close. Palm Coast is a different place now, and in many ways it’s a better, more vibrant place. But let’s not forget our senior neighbors who have lost their communities, or other transplants who could use some help finding their place in one.

Holland Park’s long construction delays harm residents Dear Editor: Holland Park has been closed for almost two years, to the dismay of all of the F-section residents. The construction deflates property values, gives lack of usage to residents and presents an eyesore to all who pass the entrance of the park. It has been months of a torn-up construction site. Is there any hope that the F-section can have its entire beloved park back? Or do we have to plan on “no trespassing” signs facing the public for more months? BETTY ANTHONY Palm Coast

Editor’s Note: According to the city’s latest report, Holland Park construction is now 84% complete. Send letters to editor@palmcoastobserver.com.

For nearly four tense hours Sept. 20, a 24-year-old horse named Mercy was stuck in a septic tank at her owners’ home on Clove Avenue in the Mondex. She had wandered into the yard and somehow fell into the tank, which was filled with sludge, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office news release. Rescuers from the Flagler County fire department, a large-animal rescue team from St. Johns County Fire Rescue, an animal rescue team from the University of Florida, a group of area veterinarians from Shelton Animal Clinic, and agricultural Deputy Steve Williams of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office all gathered to help the horse. Workers from Flagler County Road and Bridge and the health and code enforcement departments were also on scene. Mercy’s owners, Barbara and Harry Jones, watched tearfully as the delicate operation unfolded: An A-frame maneuver was erected using a strap and a large, flat surface called a sked for leverage. Mercy had been given a tranquilizer, and a mask was placed over her eyes as she lay in the tank waiting to be rescued. The saga, which began around 11 or 11:30 a.m., ended about 3:15 p.m. when Mercy was carefully

pulled out of the septic mess. Her grateful owner hugged Williams, who knows Barbara Jones well. Throughout the ordeal, Flagler County firefighter Brady Barry, himself a horse owner, stayed with Mercy, stroking her and protecting her sensitive ears as the workers tried to free her. After the men pulled Mercy out of the cesspool, workers scrubbed her with brushes and hosed her off with antiseptic chemicals. She will be monitored and given antibiotics, the veterinarians said. After workers cleaned Mercy, Williams and Barry carefully helped the horse stand up, and she quietly munched grass as her owners thanked the rescuers.

The 23-year-old, Z-Section resident William Hofer, had been convicted of grand theft in October 2014. The wallet belonged to LSection resident Deon Jenkins, 23, who contacted the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office before the Sept. 13 meeting at the parking lot of the Target Plaza on State Road 100, saying that Hofer had been asking for money in exchange for giving the wallet back. The Sheriff’s Office’s arrest report doesn’t say how Hofer got Jenkins’ wallet in the first place. Deputies found Hofer in the parking lot at about 9:46 p.m., in the passenger seat of a car driven by a 37-year-old Z-Section man, according to the arrest report. A corporal asked Hofer is there was anything illegal he should know about, and Hofer replied that there was a knife in the car. The corporal opened the car door and saw a large filet knife,

A 19-year-old woman awoke from a nap Sept. 14 and noticed that her car — a Kia, which she’d parked in her driveway on Red Clover Lane — had been stolen, along with her keys and cash from her wallet. She called the Sheriff’s Office at about 8:48 p.m. to report the theft, according to a Sheriff’s Office case report. She’d taken her nap at about 6:30 p.m. But as a deputy was driving out to her home to talk to her, the deputy got a call from dispatch: The missing car had been found empty and crashed into a light pole at Central Avenue and Town Center Boulevard, and was towed to Rogers Towing.

which was out of its sleeve and “tucked in between the passenger side door and the sear laying on top of its sleeve positioned in a concealed manner,” and “easily accessible to (Hofer) while he was sitting in the vehicle,” a deputy wrote in the arrest report. A deputy noted in the report that Hofer couldn’t explain why he’d brought the knife with him: There was no other fishing gear visible in the car. The man driving the car said he didn’t know the knife was in the car, and that it wasn’t his. Deputies ran a criminal history check on Hofer and found that he’d been convicted of grand theft in October 2014, and arrested him. Homer had also been arrested multiple times previously in Flagler County dating back to 2009.

it. He decided school was costing him money, and it wasn’t worth it. So he dropped out. Life was seemingly going great for him. He was free from just about any responsibility. He watched a lot of movies; he smoked and sold dope. But then he got hooked on a movie called “The Hurricane,” starring Denzel Washington. Something about the movie took hold of him, and he watched it every day for two months. Then one day, as he looked for a cigarette lighter in a drawer, he came across a Gideon’s Bible with an orange cover and thought about how the Bible had impacted a character in the movie. He thought, “I wonder how many lives would change if I read this?” He went back to his bedroom and read for three hours. Then he kept reading, day after day. A customer came into his room one day and noted the irony of the situation: “Are you reading the Bible and smoking weed?” But he kept on reading. Gradually, he stopped selling. He stopped smoking. Instead, he started watching evangelists on TV. He felt convinced that he would some day become a pastor himself. He didn’t come clean completely, however: He sometimes stepped back into his old paths, and, for a period of about eight months, he gave up on trying to resist his old temptations. Again, he was a man of contradictions. He prayed to God: “If you want the police to come take me to prison, that’s fine with me, as long as I can preach in prison.” He felt resigned to the fact that

he would end up behind bars. But, as he told the First Baptist congregation to a chorus of amens on Sept. 18, “I’m glad he chose this route instead of that route.”

MURDEROUS INTENT

Still, Dawsey still had a remarkable journey remaining. The next part of the story is adapted from a 2012 Facebook testimonial in Dawsey’s own words: One day in 2006, a close friend stole $4,000 from my safe. Unfortunately for him, my cousin’s business partner had two hit men who were living with us in my house. Once I told them my situation, they agreed to murder my friend for $3,000 whenever I gave them the signal. The very next day was Sunday, and I had previously informed Diana, my cousin’s girlfriend, that I would go to church and watch her get baptized. I decided to call and notify her that I was staying home, but before I could dial her number, she pulled up to my house, so I decided to go. At church I never reflected on the stolen money. I was focused on the pastor, the congregation and the music. I had been absent from church pews for so long, I

felt out of place. When the pastor gave the altar call, I immediately thought to myself, “I have to get right first, and then I’ll come to God.” As if reading my thoughts, the pastor said, “It’s not about getting right and then coming to God; it’s about coming to God and allowing him to get you right.” I instantly walked up to the pastor so that he could lead me to salvation. The church praised the work of God as I agreed to be baptized with Diana. And so, whereas I had thought that I was attending church to see someone else’s big moment, God orchestrated a transformation in my own life, so that I also got baptized. After my salvation, I went home and read a few chapters in the book of John. Later that day, I saw my friend who had stolen from me, and I began to contemplate whether I would go along with the plans to have him killed, even though I had been saved. Day after day, I debated. I really wanted him dead. Finally, after three weeks, I surrendered my anger. I forgave him. I moved on. And I never looked back. My friend’s life and mine were saved at the same time.

Dawsey went on to serve in the military. He married his wife, Jessica, and then graduated in pastoral theology in 2014 from Trinity Baptist College, in Jacksonville. He was hired that same year to work at the Palm Coast Observer. Since then, he has been a fixture in the First Baptist Church of Palm Coast, becoming a deacon and serving in the youth ministry. His desire to be a pastor never waned, and his dream was finally realized at the ceremony on Sept. 18. The Rev. Kevin Lauter, senior pastor, led the ceremony in front of the congregation, as more than two dozen other ordained men from the church approached Dawsey one by one, put their hands on his shoulders, prayed quietly with him and offered words of encouragement, while music played in the background. Lauter addressed the congregation and gave Dawsey this piece of advice: “The way you love the Lord will lead others to love the Lord.” He said it was a sign of a healthy church that God had called a member of this congregation to become a pastor. Some day, Lauter said, Dawsey could be led to become the full-time pastor of a church. For now, though, Dawsey has no plans to do anything other than serve the members and continue his work at the Observer. “In this post-modern world,” Dawsey wrote on his testimonial Facebook post, “people question why miracles are nonexistent. Their problem is that they are looking in the wrong places: … Wicked hearts are being transformed all over the world.” And he is living proof.

Six Flagler Palm Coast High School students removed from school Sept. 7 in connection with a “detailed plan to conduct a coordinated plot” against the school are still barred from returning to campus as detectives investigate. None has been charged with a crime, and the investigation is ongoing. The boys, who were questioned at the school Sept. 7, were then removed from campus on a fiveday “administrative excusal” — barred from campus, but not penalized for the time missed. That administrative excusal period has been extended as deputies continue to investigate, Flagler Schools Behavior and Discipline Coordinator Tim King said after a School Board meeting Sept. 21.

“We’re still working through it all,” King said. “As a district, we’re in constant communication with law enforcement.” The threat investigation began when a bomb threat was emailed to Bunnell Elementary School from an FPC student’s email account. That bomb threat turned out to be a hoax, but it led investigators to information on a plot against the high school. Detectives confiscated the boys’ school-issued laptops to conduct a forensic investigation. A Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said that it was not clear if the students had been serious about the threat against the high school. “This really sounds like students who were goofing around, but we are being very thorough and making sure that there’s not a serious threat,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Laura Williams said.

School Board to tighten facility-usage policy School Board members sought at a workshop Sept. 20 to tighten regulations to prevent events like the Sept. 10-11 Wheels and Keels car and boat show at Flagler Palm Coast High School from happening on school district properties in the future. School Board members were concerned that the Wheels and Keels event — which raised $5,000 for the district’s Future Problem Solvers program and was spearheaded by Flagler Broadcasting General Manager David Ayres and School Board member Andy Dance — did not come before the board for consideration, and that the arrangement involved subleasing. Subleasing is barred under district policy, but that’s what happened, board members said, when the contract between the district and the radio station was used to allow a third party — car dealership Ritchey Auto — to use the school property. Even that agreement appeared to have been violated, board member Colleen Conklin said. “Who or how or why did they think that they had permission to actually work to actively sell vehicles on our property?” Conklin said during the meeting. “At the end of the day, even the agree-

ment that actually was signed off on was violated. … That agreement was not what took place.” But Dance said that what happened at the Wheels and Keels event was what had been intended. “There may have been some words or terminology in the agreement that might not have fully substantiated what was going on, but the agreement and the way it was fulfilled was the way that it was intended to go through,” he said. “There were questions in the beginning when the radio station brought the fundraiser forward, but those were worked out through many different checks and balances. And I think the question being the scale of the event — that there’s issues with the scale of the event, and ways to provide checks and balances for those — so that would be something appropriate to look at.” School Board member Janet McDonald disagreed. “Mr. Dance, I beg to differ,” she said. “If the words of the agreement don’t align with the way it was worked out because that’s the way it was intended, that’s a false presentation of the agreement. If it actually came out the way it did and that was the intent, but that wasn’t the language that got signed and committed to, that’s a violation. A huge violation.”

WHAT ABOUT UNUSED LAND?

The school district has more property than it currently needs, and has been getting various offers to buy some of it, including the Corporate 1 property and another property in the Hammock off Oceanshore Boulevard. “We do have folks that ... have written us and said that they are willing to buy that (Corporate 1) property, and we’ve pretty much

told them that right now it’s not for sale,” Flagler Schools Superintendent Jacob Oliva told board members during the workshop Sept. 20. “But if the board wants us to accept these offers or explore them, then we need a little direction on how we move forward.” The Corporate 1 property and the Oceanshore Boulevard property each have around seven acres of usable land — less than would be needed for an actual school site. The board also has unused land in the Seminole Woods area and on the site of the Indian Trails Middle School and Belle Terre Elementary School campuses, among other locations. “Some of these properties are really a value only to us, because of the educational deed restrictions on them,” Mike Judd, assistant to to Flagler Schools Superintendent Jacob Oliva, told board

members during the workshop. Some of the larger properties might be needed for future school sites as residential construction increases, Oliva said. “We are getting to that point where development is starting to happen, rezoning is going become a very real conversation I think in the very near future, and there are some very big projects that had been kind of sunsetted for a while that are going to start ticking up as far as construction is concerned,” such as the Hunters Ridge development, he said. Judd said it might make sense to hold the properties. “Properties are getting more difficult to get, not easier, and they’re getting more expensive. … Once it’s gone, it will cost you a lot more to get it back and cost you nothing to hold on to it,” he said. Oliva pointed out that even smaller properties that can’t be used for schools could be used in the future to negotiate trades or sales, and that they will increase in value. Because it doesn’t cost the district to hold vacant land, and it is increasing in value, it makes sense to hold onto it, he said, unless the district gets an offer that would account for at least 10 years of appreciation. “My recommendation would be to not sell any of these properties unless we put in a variable factor of what we estimate a property value increase would be for the next 10 years,” Oliva said.

The two-page contract for the event did not mention actual sales taking place at the school property. It said that the radio station and the Problem Solvers “wish to participate together to undertake and organize a fundraising event … by conducting the First Inaugural Boat, Car and and RV show” at the high school campus, and that “the vendors participating in this event will be displaying boats, cars and RV’s.” But if the board wants to tighten up the language in its policy, School District Attorney Kristy Gavin said at the meeting, it needs to deal with another problem: The facility-usage policy the district has been using wasn’t ever actually formally approved by the board before it was adopted by district staff. The School Board wasn’t able to come to a resolution Sept. 20 during the hour-long workshop, and will consider the issue again in a future workshop.

‘She makes me better’ JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

After a long day filled with schoolwork and grueling football practice, Matanzas senior running back Phillip Moultrie returns home and is immediately met by his smiling, 1-year-old daughter, Naomi. When he picks her up and dedicates his next moments to her, all is OK with the world. But, when he first learned that his middle school sweetheart Yeiska Alvarado was pregnant, nothing was OK. “The first thing that came to my mind was, ‘Dang! I just messed up not only my career, but hers, too,’”

Moultrie said. “And I was so scared to tell my mom. And, when I finally told her, she just started crying and didn’t talk to me for a whole week.” “It was hard because I didn’t know what to do,” he added. “I was still a child. I didn’t know how I was going to be able to take care of my own child.” Wanting to do the right thing, Moultrie and his family met with Alvarado’s family and discussed a plan that would allow both young teens to remain in school. Both families agreed to help with the pregnancy and babysit, so that Moultrie and Alvarado could continue their education.

Having a child made studentathlete Phillip Moultrie grow up fast.

NEW LIFE

A FOOTBALL LIFE

With the arrival of baby Naomi, life changed for Moultrie. A lifestyle characterized by hanging out with friends in the wee hours of the morning, not taking anything seriously and sometimes disobeying his mother altered into a routine that kept his head in the books as he spent ample time with Alvarado and their baby girl. “I was not as mature as I am now,” he said. “I didn’t do my best in school. Having Naomi made me grow up fast, and now I have to take everything seriously to take care of her and make sure she has a good life and is raised right.” While Moultrie said he can’t imagine life without Naomi, he made it clear that other teenagers should not follow in his footsteps. “I’d tell any young teenager not to have a kid at a young age,” he said. “You have to grow up too quick and focus on a child. Focus on school.”

Moultrie has also developed on the football field. These days, he is known for doing anything that helps the team succeed. This offseason, Moultrie was moved to running back from wide receiver. At the beginning, he didn’t like the move, but now he says it comes more naturally to him. “I really like it now because I get a lot more touches,” he said. “Instead of lining up as a receiver, getting about five touches per game, I touch the ball like 20 times.” In three games, Moultrie has running totals of 115 (FPC), 207 (Mount Dora) and 168 (Seabreeze) and five touchdowns. “I’m very satisfied with myself,” he said. “I’m doing well in school, on the field, and I’m taking good care of my daughter. Most kids at a young age don’t take care of their responsibilities as a parent, and they don’t try to stay in school. So, that’s why I’m satisfied with life.”

“I’d tell any young teenager not to Courtesy photo

grandchildren a lifetime, while some great players – no matter how popular they may be – never reap a dime for their work. It’s because of this that I took a two-year hiatus from college sports a few years ago and didn’t care to ever watch another collegiate sporting event. While I still hold to my convictions, I’ve changed my mind about not watching college football for one reason: I know some of the players! For the longest, the only sports figures I had ever personally known were my cousin Lawrence Dawsey, an FSU assistant coach; and Keith Stokes, a former receiver for East Carolina and preseason NFL player. While both were cool, I didn’t know them well. I’ve only seen Lawrence once in my life, and Keith was more of my cousin’s friend than a friend to me. But now, the students I once covered are competing in multiple sports around the nation. If you read one of my previous columns, “More than journalism,” you’ll understand what I think about these particular athletes. No matter who we are, if we see someone we know on TV, we celebrate as if we’ve seen ourselves on TV. When I caught Mainland’s Adrian Killins running down the sideline for that touchdown against Michigan, I celebrated as if I were his dad; I was so proud of him. This past weekend, I didn’t get to see him perform, but I heard about Matanzas alum Andre Bodison’s monster game with New Mexico Military Institute. He caught seven passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns. And although the game didn’t go well for him or me, I enjoyed watching former Buc A.J. Westbrook play for the Seminoles. And there are so many more. Five years from now, all the kids I’ve created great relationships with by telling their stories or simply giving advice will be playing on Saturdays and Sundays – and other days for other sports. What a joy! Hopefully you feel that same pride in seeing these athletes succeed.

Meet the Lady Alley ’Dawg: Gabriella Hernandez She’s been a bowler siince before she could walk. Career high: 267. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

You can tell she’s in her comfort zone: High-fiving her teammates after strikes and spares. Laughing it up with onlookers about scores. Palm Coast Lanes is Flagler Palm Coast freshman Gabriella Hernandez’s second home. Even before she was big enough to hold a ball, Hernandez extended her hands to play with one of her parents’ bowling balls. With the bumpers up and the ball made

ready, little Hernandez would push the ball down the lanes with the same excitement she still exhibits for the game. Her parents, Jessica and Randy — tournament bowlers — signed her up for a league when she turned 8, and ever since then it has shifted into a job-like responsibility, replacing her leisure time with practices and weekend tournaments. “I guess you can say my life can be labeled as pretty boring,” Hernandez laughed. “I literally live at the alley, whether I’m practicing or there at 10 p.m. because my dad has league. The bowling alley has become my second home.” Making her residence in the alley, Hernandez has elevated her game. Not only is she the Lady Bulldogs’ anchor (best bowler), but her rounds usually beat or compete with all the boys’ rounds. “Beating the guys definitely hypes me up and gets me motivated,” she says, “because you know guys always think they’re better than girls.” The Lady “alley” Dawg has aspirations to continue her playing career throughout college and all of her adult life. “I want to bowl until I can’t walk anymore,” Hernandez says. “Bowling is my life and passion. When I bowl really great, it makes me as happy as anything. Bowling has given me confidence and helped me become mentally strong in many ways.”

“I’m a little new to the high school bowling. but I really enjoyed being a part of this team.”

INSANE NUMBERS Hernandez has rolled a 634 series this season, going 155, 222 and 257 in a game. Her career high is 267 and a 640 series. She has also won multiple local and area tournaments.

Flagler Palm Coast (0-3) vs. New Smyrna Beach:

New Smyrna wins 22-20. The Bulldogs and Barracudas have similar styles and similar weaknesses. When both teams drop back to pass, turnovers tend to occur. Both have good defenses and a running game, but the game will go down to whoever makes the fewest offensive mistakes – and if the Barracudas can stop Que’Shaun Byrd.

Seabreeze (0-3) at Palatka:

Do you agree with my winners and the scores? Share your thoughts on Twitter @PCOsports.

Palatka wins 20-7. The Sandcrabs have scored a total of seven offensive points in three games. They’re just not that good on offense, and it affects their defense, which has to play the majority of the game on the field. If the Sandcrabs can find a way to score two touchdowns by moving the ball, their defense will rest enough to make this a competitive game.

Matanzas (3-0) at Nease:

Mainland (4-0) vs. Dr. Phillips:

Devin Mathews goes up and catches the ball for a 10-yard touchdown pass in the Pirates’ 30-0 win over Seabreeze.

WHO WILL WIN ON FRIDAY?

Matanzas wins 21-10. The Pirates still have much to improve in order to become elite, but they have enough on both sides of the ball to win games. Philip Moultrie and the offense has become unpredictable, and everyone has trouble moving the ball against the Matanzas defense. While Nease will give the Pirates a challenge they have yet to see this season, Matanzas should still be able to handle the Panthers.

Mainland wins 43-20. What separates the Bucs from most teams is their ability to score on every drive. Most teams play a field position game. Not Mainland. The Bucs simply play “Who can score the most points the fastest?” Dr. Phillips may give the Mainland the biggest challenge up to this point, but the Bucs will do what they do best: run away in the end. Mainland has too many offensive and defensive weapons.

Bullying: no laughing matter Mark Alan presents an anti-bullying message through comedy and magic. JEFF DAWSEY

As a former bullying victim, comedian-magician Mark Alan now spreads his anti-bullying message in an entertaining way, as he did Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Flagler County Public Library. “When I was young, a kid who lived in my neighborhood was relentless on me for years,” Alan said. “The fear factor is the most important thing that bullies use. The two things that are most important to bully prevention are to try to stop being afraid of the bullies, and to make sure everybody stands together. If you have 10 kids and two bullies, the 10 kids will be more powerful than two bullies.” Alan used the kids in attendance as props, and they all got a kick out of the entertainment. “It was awesome!” said Arian Lugger, who came with his mother. “When I now see someone getting bullied, I’m going to go get help, and I’m going to help them.” After he performs for an audience, Alan loves to get calls from parents who thank him because their kids put into practice his methods and overcame bullying. Mark Alan presents these steps to try to prevent bullying: Stop the bullying. Tell someone. Ask for help. Nobody deserves bullying. Don’t be a bystander.

Alan used this bucket of happy stars to tell students how to fill up the bucket of good things and to not take away other’s good things.

young students, Alan stated that bullying also happens to adults. Whether by a boss, coworker or anywhere else, they too suffer much of the same treatment by other adults, and he believes his methods can also aid in preventing them from bully attacks. “The method is not brain surgery,” Alan said. “It’s kind of easy stuff, but it’s not easy to get everyone to do it.”

DID YOU KNOW? There are three major forms of bullying: Physical, verbal and social/cyber. And, when there is someone around, bullying will be stopped within 30 seconds.

Mark Alan had this student say negative things to “Little green piece of paper” and throw it down and stomp it. Then he said that paper would never be the same again.

Bird care from the experts: bird owners

PETS OF TH E WEEK

Today we get tips from Baiata Bird Sanctuary

R

osie and I are amazed at how many African greys we heard from last week. OK, I heard from their owners and told Rosie about it, but believe me – she was amazed. Thank you all for emailing and sending photos. My plan is to feature your birds next week. My first pet was a light blue parakeet, and we raised parrots many years ago, but there is always more to learn. While there are books and countless internet sites full of information, there really is nothing better than going to the source — people with birds. This week I visited Darwin, Plato and Teddy at the Baiata Bird Sanctuary at Nature Scapes in Bunnell. A couple of humans, Trudy Tappan and Kathy Clark, were there too. Darwin is a 75-year-old blue fronted Amazon, a perfect

example of how long these birds can live. He stayed back in the aviary, while Plato, the African grey, and Teddy, the cockatoo sat in on the interview. One thing I learned: Rosie might not be getting enough sleep. “These birds need between 12 and 14 hours of sleep,” Tappan told me. “Without a good amount of rest in a dark and quiet area, they may not be as talkative.” So Rosie’s schedule has been changed. I have always covered her up, but she is in the family room so the TV is still on. Since our TV died last Friday, keeping it quiet hasn’t been a problem, but when the new one arrives, I am moving her to a different room for bedtime.

Why? Because, since Friday, I have seen a difference in Rosie. Make time for play. Yesterday Rosie was in a mood. She didn’t want to play. This morning she blocked me from filling her food dish so we could play. Birds, like people, have moods. Clark told me that Amazons don’t generally play with toys as much as a grey will. From tug-of-war with their covers, to a game of fetch, where the bird throws the ball and the Clarks return it, it’s all about creativity. A healthy diet is also important. I have read many articles about how to introduce pellets. Rosie might eat a few, but she usually picks around them. A diet of seeds is not a balanced diet. This is the one pet you

can feed some “people food” to, specifically, raw fruits and vegetables. “Offer different foods,” Clark suggested. “I have a bird that likes pomegranate.” Rosie likes scrambled eggs (hard-boiled too), green beans, okra, blueberries and bananas. One thing that you must do is clean the fruit and vegetables thoroughly. The least bit of soap, insecticide or any manmade additive can be fatal. We also talked about “first” birds. This is important. Birds go up for adoption because the owners weren’t realistic in what to expect. Cockatiels and parakeets are wonderful birds to start with, and may be taught to sit on a finger, say a few words or whistle tunes.

The Chabad of Palm Coast commissioned the scribe and is hosting the event. An expert ritual scribe will ink the final letters of the magnificent scroll, as done 3,300 years ago by Moses. Following the completion of the Torah, there will be music and dancing to celebrate the event. An authentic Torah scroll is a masterpiece of labor and skill.

Comprising between 62 and 84 sheets of parchment-cured, tanned, scraped and prepared according to exact Torah law specifications, and containing exactly 304,805 letters, the resulting handwritten scroll takes months to complete. “The Scroll is an essential addition to the local community. It represents the unbroken chain of Jewish tradition and survival,” Rabbi Levi Ezagui, director of Chabad of Palm Coast, said. “The ancient wisdom contained in this scroll is the essence of our identity as Jews. Possessing our own Torah scroll is a cause for great joy and celebration. For more info visit www. chabadpalmcoast.com.

here have long been mobile businesses, such as automotive glass repair, car detailing, locksmiths, etc., but the business model is now expanding. Heavy traffic and busy lives have created an opportunity for several new businesses to become mobile and take their services on the road. Dr. Jennifer Hepler, a chiropractor, recently started Joyful Health Chiropractic, taking her portable equipment with her on house calls. Born and raised in Ormond Beach, Hepler worked in chiropractic clinics in North Carolina and Tallahassee after getting her degree at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Port Orange. She saw the need for mobile chiropractic practice and decided to start one in her home town. “Busy professionals do not have to leave their office, and patients don’t have to battle traffic or sit in a waiting room,” she said. “Families don’t have to figure how to coordinate all their kids’ schedules. Life is busy and time is precious.” Hepler now wants to create a community of mobile businesses to network and support each other. Call 530-5475.

With Backpack Software, customers don’t have to unplug everything and bring it into a store. Also, problems can be environmental, she said. For example, one time a customer said there was a “buzzing” noise and it turned out that it came from a microwave next door. “We work in partnership with people,” Walker said. “They are not just dropping off their computer at a store and picking it up.”

Funky chalkboard is a ‘draw’ Inside the place at the Flagler Beach pier. BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

Erin O’Brien is the general manager of the Funky Pelican, which turns four on Jan. 9, 2017.

omeone gets married. Someone has a birthday. Someone is happy and feels like drawing a sunflower with a smiley face on it. It’s all recorded in chalk by passersby at the Flagler Beach pier, on the Funky Pelican’s public chalkboard. “It is something that has become a draw,” said Erin O’Brien with a laugh. She’s the general manager of the restaurant since it opened in January 2013, and

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC IS PLAYED AT THE FUNKY PELICAN? On a given day at the Funky Pelican, you might hear Led Zeppelin, the Doors, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. That means you’re on the Rolling Stones station on Pandora. The staff picks the music based on who’s in the restaurant. If they see a group of people for whom they think Led Zeppelin would be a bit too raucous, they’ll turn on some Motown instead. So, if you’re wondering how hip you are, just listen to the music at the Funky Pelican and you’ll know.

she recently shared some details about how the chalkboard is handled. Every night, the chalkboard is washed clean, and new chalk is set out. Sometimes during the busy season, the board is washed two or three times a day so there is always some room for the next person to write something new. People have proposed marriage on the wall. Sometimes, when a birthday party is planned at the restaurant but no one can get there early enough, the Funky Pelican will get a call asking, Can you write Happy Birthday to soand-so on the chalkboard for us? And O’Brien is a good sport. “We’ll erase a little room and put it up there for them,” she said. The cost is relatively small, but not zero: O’Brien buys $85 to $100 of chalk per month. There are also strict rules from the city — Flagler Beach had to give the restaurant special permission just to have the chalkboard in the first place — that forbid profanity or advertisements of any kind. So, it has to be closely monitored, and O’Brien instructs the staff to include the chalkboard as part of their regular rounds at the restaurant: check

FROM DUST TO DUST: HOW DID IT BEGIN? When the building was being renovated before the Funky Pelican opened, the front walls facing the sidewalk were covered with construction material called Peel and Stick paper. The texture of the paper was such that you could write on it with a pebble, and the marks would remain. “One person put something up there, and then everybody was doing it,” said Erin O’Brien, the restaurant’s general manager. “People would write on it, ‘RIP Steve,’ or “Happy birthday.’” Rather than try to stop people from doing it, they decided to encourage it. They got special permission from the city of Flagler Beach for a public chalkboard and have been maintaining it ever since.

your tables, check the bathroom, check the chalkboard, check your tables again. It’s one more thing to do, but everyone has gotten used to it because they appreciate the novelty value of being the restaurant with the chalkboard. It’s good for business. “I think it definitely helps us,” O’Brien said. “When people write on it, the first thing they’re doing is asking one of us to take a picture, or they’re taking a selfie, and right away it’s going on social media, and these are tourists from all over the country. It’s given us a lot of exposure to the country, really. People hear about it, and they want to come down.” O’Brien said that’s one of her favorite parts about working at a

restaurant: meeting people from all over the world: Russia, Germany, England, Australia, Italy, Canada, all over the United States. Owner Ray Barshay said there are plans to add the restaurant’s logo and the name of the city permanently to the chalkboard, to encourage people to take pictures and send them to friends. Artists have also come to draw on the chalkboard, sometimes spending all morning working on an image, even though they know it won’t be long before it’s washed away. And the next day, someone else will have gotten married or engaged, or someone else will have had a birthday and will stop at the Funky Pelican to tell the world.

Christian Clark prepares a drink at the Funky Pelican.

WHAT’S ALLOWED ON THE BOARD? Pretty much anything is allowed on the Funky Pelican chalkboard, but no profanity or advertising of any form — and that includes a social media handle. You can’t say, “Follow me on Snapchat at … ” because that’s considered advertising. Also, you can’t write anything political. Nothing offensive. Photos by Brian McMillan

The chalkboard is washed every night, and new chalk is set out the next morning for people draw with.

BUSINESS OBSERVER PLUS Former Yacht Club site reopens as ‘upper tier’ events venue T

he old boat dock is now more of a wedding deck. Shane Bonner and fellow Palm Coast resident Brad Huffstetler bought the former Palm Coast Yacht Club building at the northern end of Florida Park Drive, in January, and it has been reopened, reimagined and upgraded as a new “upper tier” events venue called Channel Side. “We changed out all the floors, the paint, the lighting,” Bonner said. “We’re redoing the dock, we’ve put a new roof on, we re-landscaped. It’s definitely a lot different.” The result, Bonner and Huffstetler hope, will fill a niche in Palm Coast for a range of events, including weddings, anniversary parties, sweet 16 birthday parties or quincineras, bar mitzvahs, corporate meetings, celebrations of life, or other gatherings that want a “luxury space.” Meanwhile, the Palm Coast Yacht Club is more of a social club, Bonner said, with meeting moving from venue to venue, rather than maintaining the overhead costs of the building. For more information, visit channelsideclub.com.
