Palm Coast resident Bea Hornby is looking forward to her 100th birthday party at the VFW. JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

The ladies in Bea Hornby’s morning exercise class at Palm Coast VFW 8696 grumble in playful resistance to the exercises Hornby is leading them through. The ladies range in age from 56 to 85 and their objections would be understandable — if Hornby wasn’t 20 to 40 years older and getting ready to celebrate her 100th birthday. “She sits in the lotus position and none of us can do it. Can you do it?” Besty Klitch asked. “She’s 100!” Hornby took the class over from its founder, Anita Vardarkis, 18 years ago, when Hornby was a mere 81. She is a force to be reckoned with, and as she recalls her life, it is evident she always has been. Born in Highlands, New Jersey, on Sept. 8, 1916, she survived the hurricane that tore through South Florida in 1926, worked in the RCA factory, and was a real-life Rosie the Riveter during World War II while her husband, Thomas, was overseas serving in the Merchant Marines. Her father, a carpenter, taught her to read blueprints, a skill that gave her a quick promotion at the shipyard during the war. “She was the very first person I met here,” Patsy Farmer said during a water break at the VFW. “She is the one who told me about the exercise class.” Farmer unrolled her yoga mat for the second half of the exercise hour. Behind Farmer was the youngest member of the group, Connie Greenwood, 56. Greenwood lives in Connecticut and was visiting her mother, Dottie King. “When I visit, I beg my mother, ‘Take me to your class,’” Greenwood laughed. Exercise, reading and crossword puzzles have been a part of Hornby’s entire life. She and her brother and sisters would swim

the river in front of their home, walk across the land and swim in the ocean. Her family lived a brief time in Hollywood, Florida, in 1925. Just long enough to experience what is often referred to as the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926, a Category 4 storm that destroyed everything, including the Hornby home. The family moved back to New Jersey, but Hornby would return to Miami and visit Hollywood on vacations with her husband, Thomas. In 1986, she moved to Palm Coast. Hornby is an active member of the Palm Coast VFW. The VFW is proud of their Rosie the Riveter, who has served as chaplain, president of the auxiliary, treasurer and many other positions. She is also included on the World War II honor wall. A birthday bash is planned for Friday, Sept. 2 at the VFW. The night will include dinner and dancing and live music by Tim Rippey. “Her one birthday request was that Tim Rippey would sing at her Bea Hornby, far left, in a photo with her New party,” her friend Mary McDer- Jersey bowling team. mott said. “It’s part of her gift from her son George, who will be coming from California for the party.”

IF YOU WANT TO CELEBRATE ... The Palm Coast VFW Auxiliary, 47 Old Kings Road N., will celebrate Bea Hornby’s 100th birthday on Friday, Sept. 2. A special dinner dance is scheduled featuring her favorite entertainer, Tim Rippey. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and a chicken dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. Space is limited. Call 446-8696.

Former County Commissioner Al Jones, a decorated Army veteran and Merchant Marine who was active in local politics even after his stint on the commission, died Aug. 21 after a heart attack. He was 87. Jones and the late Jim Holland, a member of Palm Coast’s first City Council, began a tradition of a monthly breakfast meeting where local political figures and those interested in local politics would meet to discuss local issues. Jones’ last “breakfast club” event was Aug. 20, the day before his death. “He was a tremendous man,” said Flagler County Commissioner George Hanns. “He’s been an inspiration to many, many people who’ve run for office in both parties.” Jones, a Republican, was also an inspiration to Hanns, a Democrat. Jones had been encouraging Hanns to run for County Commissioner Merrill Shoemaker’s seat, Hanns said, when a district change suddenly switched Hanns from Shoemaker’s district into Jones’ district for the 1992 election. “I said, ‘Al, I’m not going run against you,’ and he said, ‘Run,’” Hanns said. “When I beat him, I’m like, ‘Al, I’m sorry,’ and he said, ‘Don’t worry about it kid, you’re going to do a good job.’” City Councilwoman Heidi Shipley posted on Facebook to acknowledge Jones’ death, writing, “In my eyes he will always be remembered as someone that brought the parties together once a month in a peaceful setting to break bread. May he rest in peace and always be remembered for his kindness.” In a reply to her post, County Commissioner Charlie Ericksen wrote, “In the years I have been in Flagler, Al was an inspiration.” Ericksen noted how Jones, though in a wheelchair, always “made his rounds” to personally greet everyone attending the breakfasts. Jones, a Flagler Beach resident, was also a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club with a lifetime membership, and was awarded the “Kiwanis of the Year” award in 2015. A memorial gathering for friends to visit with Jones’ family is planned for 5-7 p.m. Aug. 24 in the chapel at the Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home at 511 Old Kings Road S., Flagler Beach. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at Christ Lutheran Church at 2323 N. State St., Bunnell. In lieu of flowers, Jones’ family suggests contributions to Christ Lutheran Church.

Additional court services for vets? Flagler County and 7th Judicial Circuit representatives met Aug. 19 to develop a strategy to increase services for veterans in the court system and discuss the potential for a veterans court program, according to a Flagler County government news release. “Everyone is very supportive about getting veterans the help they need to navigate the court system,” County Administrator Craig Coffey said in the news release. “Chief Judge Perkins came prepared with some very creative solutions. It was a very positive meeting, and we are very thankful for the Chief Judge’s assistance.”

This is not true. The myth that the Nazis used fluoride to pacify or poison Jewish victims of the Holocaust has been bandied about websites such as Alex Jones’ infowars.com. Factchecking site PolitiFact checked the claim after a resident mentioned it during a Pinellas County Commission meeting. The site rated it “pants on fire” false after checking with recognized Holocaust experts who readily debunked it. See http:// bit.ly/1p8rNKE to read their full report.

Please protect our children and our citizens! Fluoride is highly toxic to humans and pets and negatively affects multiple systems in our bodies, especially in the amounts put into water supplies! The damage that is done to both humans and pets far outweighs any potential good it may do to prevent cavities. …

ADA also says the following: “There have been claims that exposure to fluoride presents a neurotoxic (harmful or damaging to nerve tissue) risk or lowered intelligence. Such claims are based partly on one 1995 study in which rats were fed fluoride at levels up to 125 times greater than that found in optimally fluoridated water. … However, two scientists who reviewed the 1995 study have suggested that the observations made can be readily explained by mechanisms that do not involve neurotoxicity. The scientists found inadequacies in experimental design that may have led to invalid conclusions. For example, the results of the experiment were not confirmed by the use of control groups which are an essential feature of test validation and experimental design.” In addition, the American Medical Association has endorsed community water fluoridation since 1951.

I have a flouride allergy. I lived on a military base for a short time with flouridated water. I experienced swollen lymph glands, and itchy skin after showering. Having an autoimmune disorder and being constantly exposed to an allergy causes wide spread inflammation. It’s not avoidable if it’s in my water supply.

The claim that fluoride lowers IQ is often cited to a Harvard study which did, in fact, find a “possible” link — but the researchers were using data from areas of China which had levels of fluoride many times higher than recommended in the U.S. The drinking water people in the study were exposed to had fluoride rates of about 11.5 parts per million. The recommended amout in the U.S. is 0.7 ppm. The difference in IQ was so small it was potentially within the margin of error for IQ testing — something acknowledged by the

Flagler County has already voted for fluoride. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Since Flagler County announced plans to fluoridate the county’s water supplies for unincorporated areas, Palm Coast residents have taken to the internet to oppose fluoridation in Palm Coast. A change.org petition titled “Stop Palm Coast from adding fluoride to the municipal water supply” had 172 supporters as of the morning of Aug. 24, and a Facebook page titled “Fluoride Free Flagler” had 75 likes. Palm Coast City Councilwoman Heidi Shipley has spoken against water fluoridation. “I do not feel that government should decide what your children drink,” she wrote. “People know the benefits of fluoride and I’m sure dentists tell parents their views. The choice ends there.” City Councilman Steve Nobile encouraged people on either side of the issue to contact the City Council, and posted a graphic with the words, “Get the F out!

ones who have spoken out since the County Commission made its decision. In an Aug. 16 School Board meeting, School Board member Janet McDonald said she was dismayed that the County Commission had voted to “chemicalize” the water in Flagler County “without so much as a workshop.” That was incorrect: There was a County Commission workshop on fluoride Aug. 1. McDonald continued: “This is going affect our students. … It’s a neurotoxin when taken internally. Even on our mouthwashes and our toothpaste, it says do not swallow if it’s fluoride included in it.” A total of 52 out of Florida’s 67 counties area already either fluoridate or already have the optimal amounts of fluoride naturally occurring in their water sources. About 3,200 reputable studies have showed its safety and effectiveness in the amounts recommended for community water fluoridation, Snyder said. The fluoride levels in toothpaste should not be confused with those in water: The level in toothpaste is generally 1,0001,500 parts per million, and the recommended amount for water fluoridation is 0.7 ppm.

Fluoride is a poison.” Mayor Jon Netts, who has a background in biology, noted in a council meeting that fluoride occurs naturally in the water in many areas — including Jacksonville — in the amount recommended for water fluoridation, and has been shown to reduce tooth decay. “Over the years, going back to the ’40s and ’50s, there has been outcry about, ‘Oh, fluoride is poisonous.’ Well, so is chlorine,” he said. “They’re all in the same family of chemicals. But there’s no question that where fluoride is in the water there is a reduction in tooth decay.” The issue has yet to come before the City Council: The County Commission’s measure concerns only unincorporated areas, and Flagler County Health Department Administrator Bob Snyder has said he plans to speak with Palm Coast officials about fluoridation after the November elections. On the possibility of fluoride being carcinogenic, the ADA says that a 1990s study using high levels of fluoride — 25, 100 and 175 ppm — in rats and mice found that some male rats in one group from the study showed “equivocal” evidence of carcinogenicity. The Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Fluoride of the U.S. Public Health Service combined the results of that study and a related one, and stated: “Taken together, the two animal studies available at this time fail to establish an association between fluoride and cancer.” The American Cancer Society, in a fact sheet, states the following: “More than 50 population-based studies have looked at the potential link between water fluoride levels and cancer. ‘No’ on Amendment 4 Property-tax breaks for solar-energy devices sounds and reads like an environmental Apple Pie issue. But with every new law, there are always winners and losers.

Here we go again: Another proposed constitutional amendment on Florida’s ballot that reads and sounds like Apple Pie goodness. If approved by 60% of voters in the Aug. 30 primary elections, Amendment 4 would codify in the state constitution tax breaks for having solar or renewable energy devices on all property. The big change from existing exemptions is that the tax breaks would be broadened to include not only residential but commercial properties as well. If passed, Amendment 4 will be the first step toward energy and economic utopia in Florida. At least that’s the impression the two primary proponents of the measure give you. Those proponents, by the way, are Floridians for Solar Choice Inc., which is mostly funded by the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE), a Knoxville, Tennessee-based organization of climate-change activists who have contributed IN nearly $2 million of the $2.12 FAVOR million Floridians for Solar Choice has received in contriOF 4 butions since January 2015. For a But whenever a new law is contrary adopted, there are always — opinion, always — unintended consesee Page quences, and there are always 15A. winners and losers. This also reminds us of the famous dictum about laws from the late Nobel economist Milton Friedman: What you give to one, you must take away from another. So let’s call this what it is: Amendment 4 is a subsidy for solar users and crony capitalism for the solar industry. It also is a regressive tax that likely will help the better off at the expense of the less well off. Both of these consequences, however, are overshadowed by and wrapped in the environmental activists’ purity goal of reducing consumers’ use of the most economical forms of energy — fossil fuels, in favor of the most uneconomical and expensive

AMENDMENT 4:

Solar devices or renewable energy source devices; exemption from certain taxation and assessment ARTICLE VII, SECTIONS 3 AND 4 & ARTICLE XII, SECTION 34: Proposing an amendment to the State Constitution to authorize the Legislature, by general law, to exempt from ad valorem taxation the assessed value of solar or renewable energy source devices subject to tangible personal property tax, and to authorize the Legislature, by general law, to prohibit consideration of such devices in assessing the value of real property for ad valorem taxation purposes. This amendment takes effect Jan. 1, 2018, and expires on Dec. 31, 2037.

form of energy — solar. If the amendment passes, and there is indeed an explosion in the installation of solar panels on residential and commercial buildings all over Florida, city and county tax assessors would create a benefit (lower property taxes than they otherwise would be) for those who can afford solar panels. Those who can’t afford solar panels gradually would feel the shift of their property taxes going up so local governments can maintain their levels of tax collections and services. Why does Florida need to codify a measure that will forever favor one form of energy over another? Can you imagine a U.S. constitutional amendment giving a similar tax break? Clearly, this is part of the political agenda of climate activists, such as those at SACE. Indeed, they would not need to tilt laws in favor of solar panels and solar devices if solar energy were economically competitive. Here’s the reality about solar: It’s clean and renewable, yes. But …

Writing last December in “Solar Carve Outs for the Sunshine State,” James Taylor, a senior fellow at the Tallahassee-based James Madison Institute, noted a 2014 Brookings Institution study that concluded: “Adding up the net energy cost of the five low-carbon alternatives, far and away the most expensive is solar. It costs almost 19 cents more per KWH than power from the coal or gas plants that it displaces … To place these additional costs in context, the average cost of electricity to consumers in 2012 was 9.84 cents per KWH, including the cost of transmission and distribution of electricity.” “As a result,” the Brookings Institution added, “a new solar plant [would cost] at least 200% more [i.e., triple the cost] than using coal and gas technologies.” Let’s also keep in mind how much solar energy is subsidized already. In addition to the property-tax exemption already given to residential solar devices in Florida, solar power equipment is exempted from sales taxes. And state power utilities and municipalities also offer solar power rebates and incentive programs. Nationwide, according to Taylor, the solar power industry in 2013 received $5.3 billion in subsidies compared to $5.1 billion in subsidies for the coal, natural gas, nuclear and oil industries combined. What does that tell you? To be sure, every Floridian, for that matter, every American, embraces the idea of harnessing the sun’s power for energy. But at what price and at whose expense? While Amendment 4 reads and sounds like environmental Motherhood and Apple Pie, this measure is yet another attempt by political activists to cement forever in the Florida Constitution a special benefit, to pick an energy winner over an energy loser. Solar energy, like fossil fuels, should stand on its own merit. Amendment 4 should not be in the Florida Constitution. We recommend: No.

Elections matter to Observer readers How do we know? Once again, we were overwhelmed with letters this week from candidates and other readers alike. Take time to read your neighbors’ opinions, and don’t forget to vote on Aug. 30. FLAGLER COUNTY SHERIFF The Sheriff’s Office is already providing the best service possible Dear Editor: Thank you for your endorsement. Quoting our recent accreditation assessors, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is “providing the citizens of Flagler with the most professional and effective law enforcement services possible.” We look forward to continuing our efforts to reduce the crime rate even further while expanding our transparency and community involvement. My promise is to continue with this commitment and explore and undertake new ideas and initiatives. However, we cannot do this alone and need our citizens and visitors to join our effort by lock-

James Manfre

ing their vehicles and saying something when they see something suspicious. Before I finish, I would like this opportunity to address the appalling comments Rick Staly made in response to my endorsement by your paper. In his response titled, “I stood up to two ethically corrupt sheriffs,” I can only speak for myself and state unequivocally for all that I am not ethically corrupt and have not been dishonest or been involved in any illegal behavior. The records

clearly support my statement and shame on Rick Staly for making this claim. I made a big mistake by hiring Rick and ask you not to make the same mistake. Staly is a man who says he retired from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office after approximately two years of service. He never retired, rather quit after doing all he could to undermine me and what I was trying to do for the community and my employees. Staly has a sordid history of his own. He was demoted by then Sheriff Kevin Beary of Orange County for his use of his official uniform and his position as undersheriff to hawk a vitamin supplement that garnered him over $60,000. He also was involved in Sheriff Fleming’s 2012 ethics probe as he was the head of security at the Club at Hammock Beach and recommended that Fleming be granted the free membership, the same

membership which was at the heart of his ethics violation. Finally, please do not forget what John Pollinger, Don Fleming and Jerry O’Gara have all said about Staly’s actions prior to his announcement to run for sheriff. While still employed by me at the Sheriff’s Office, he was soliciting each one to support him in his campaign. We all cannot be wrong about Staly as his history and flip-flopping between the Democratic and Republican parties shows he is an opportunist at heart. I humbly ask for your vote on Aug. 30 so we may continue our vision of making Flagler County the safest it can be for all who live, work and vacation in our beautiful county.

EDITING THE LETTERS Unfortunately, not every single letter this week made it print because we ran out of space, even though we have dedicated more pages to letters this week than I can remember ever doing in the past six years of our existence. A note on the editing process: In electionrelated letters, sometimes there are personal insults or other claims that are made without being substantiated. Our policy is to fact check letters just as we would with other stories, and we also don’t allow personal attacks. Because of the volume of the letters, some of the claims that were not easily verified simply had to be deleted. The goal in trimming the letters down was always to give the letter writer as much freedom as possible, while being fair to those under attack. — BRIAN MCMILLAN, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

Man finds wallet containing $3,400, returns it to owner A Flagler County man found a wallet containing $3,400 cash, and returned it to its owner, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office news release. Kevin Miller, a 27-year-old construction worker and a resident of Daytona North, was leaving the PetSmart at the Palm Coast Landing shopping center Aug. 5 when he saw a wallet on the pavement in the parking lot. He wasn’t sure he should pick it up, but when he saw someone else “eyeballing it,” he later told deputies, he grabbed it. Miller called the Sheriff’s Office to report the find, and started counting the cash as he waited for a deputy to show up. “My jaw dropped. There was $3,400 in it!” Miller said, according to the news release. Sitting in his truck waiting for the deputy, Miller began to feel self-conscious, and called the Sheriff’s Office a second time. “I didn’t want to be accused of stealing this money,” he said,

according to the news release. “It was just crazy. How do you not miss a wallet with $3,400 in it?” Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Daniel Weaver arrived moments later and used an ID in the wallet to track down its owner, an Orlando woman who’d been traveling on Flagler County on a family vacation. The money was for the trip. She showed up within two hours to meet Weaver at the Turtle Shack restaurant, where Weaver returned the wallet. Miller said he believed God placed him in the right place for a reason. “I could have really used that money. But I believe in honesty and respecting other people’s belongings. Especially $3,400. And I’d want someone to do that for me,” he said in the news release.

FLAGLER COUNTY SHERIFF

Dear Editor: Eleventh-hour personal attacks before the Aug. 30 primary upon my record and integrity by one of my opponents is a glimpse into the window of what his administration would look like: a sheriff who uses half truths, deceptive practices, and money to gain a position of personal power above the safety and welfare of our citizens and the men and women of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office who protect them daily. When I made a decision to run to be your sheriff, I made a commitment to run an upstanding campaign focused on the issues that affect every citizen and law enforcement officer in this county, comparing my achievements with my opponents while treating them respectfully. I am proud that my team and I have held true to honoring these time tested principals. I ask for your vote on Tuesday, Aug. 30. Thank you. DON FLEMING Flagler County

sion, tenacity, listening — and most of all to be a good person. Then you need experience, innovation, education, management skills. I have had the pleasure of knowing Donald Fleming for a number of years. Don is the only candidate that completes the above checklist with a grade of 100%. As a retired NYPD major case squad and Flagler County detective, I have a unique perspective. The foundation for any “cop” is to be a good person so you can police in a free society objectively. Donald Fleming was an amazing Sheriff during his tenure at Flagler Courtly Sheriff’s Office. He embodied the qualities that I have mentioned above. He has been dearly missed. When I was under his command, he tasked me as a detective to start an Economic Crime Unit and in the first year under his tutelage we arrested and convicted fraudsters who preyed upon the elderly and other targeted groups. The convictions and arrests added

Fleming: a great man Dear Editor: As a former prosecutor in Flagler County, I can speak with firsthand knowledge of Don Fleming’s qualifications as a sheriff. His command staff was competent and hard working. His deputies were knowledgeable and respectful. Above all, the agency had a “shine” to it. It was a privilege to be a member of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. Morale was high, and employees truly made a difference. Now, as I speak to friends still employed with the agency, there is a noticeable difference. Law enforcement and support staff simply “do their jobs.” The

shine is gone. I have gotten to know Sheriff Fleming as a personal friend over the years. He is a sheriff, cop, college professor, family and businessman, community leader and decorated Vietnam veteran. Don Fleming above all is a great man. Flagler County will be privileged to have this great man lead our Sheriff’s Office and deputies back to greatness.

up to in excess of $1.5 million in losses. Before that time in the history of Flagler County, only about $50,000 in fraud arrests were made. His accomplishments are depicted in ACFE Fraud Magazine Volume 28 No 6. Mr. Fleming proactively came to the rescue of vulnerable members of his community. I know I am not alone in my belief that Donald Fleming will restore excellence to Flagler Courtly. In my opinion he is the only candidate that is running for altruistic reasons; he cares for others a great deal. Please re-elect the best candidate for the position, Donald Fleming. Flagler County needs him.

John Lamb

JOSHUA DAVIS Palm Coast

Despite what Staly’s false attack ads might say, I do live in Flagler Dear Editor: I’m John Lamb, a candidate for sheriff of Flagler County. Recently Rick Staly sent mailers and made robo calls riddled with misrepresentation and false statements. My pledge to you is to run a clean, positive campaign that addresses the issues and concerns related to safety and security and quality of life in our county. As is customary for all appointed staff, I resigned my position as a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office assistant chief when the new a sheriff was elected. The new sheriff chose his team, and I reverted back to the rank of lieutenant which I held before being appointed assistant chief. There is no truth to the claim that I was investigated by internal affairs and disciplined three times. In 23 years of police service, I never was reprimanded or disciplined,

and I challenge anyone to prove otherwise. From the beginning of my campaign, I was open about my children finishing the school year in Jacksonville and that my wife was still employed as a detective with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Today, my children are attending school in Flagler County and my wife is currently employed as a teacher in Flagler County. Reference to our homestead is a misrepresentation as my wife continued to live in the house after I moved to Flagler in 2015. I have knocked on over 6,000 doors and the one underlying desire of the citizens I have met is that they want an ethical sheriff. I am honored to wear the badge of a police officer, and I have always worked to make it shine brighter and not tarnish it. I hope to continue this legacy as your next sheriff. FLAGLER COUNTY SHERIFF

LET T ERS

Robo calls show Staly is not fit to be sheriff Dear Editor: This evening my phone rang and it was a robo call from the Staly for Sheriff Campaign stating that sheriff’s candidate John Lamb does not reside in Flagler County, among other lies. This is a sheriff’s campaign making allegations which he knows are false. The Lamb family are neighbors of mine. If Staly is not aware they are residing here, it is he who is not fit to be our sheriff. Shame on you, Rick Staly. If the truth is not important to you in your campaign, how can the voters of Flagler County trust you with the office of Sheriff? LINDA HANSEN Palm Coast

Lamb has credentials we need in a sheriff Dear Editor: Most of the current candidates have ethics violations and/or do not have the credentials to be sheriff. But candidate John Lamb has worked in corrections, as patrol officer, on bike patrols, community relations, worked his way up to sergeant, lieutenant, assistant chief in charge of 166 deputies, overseeing 192,000 residents. He has administration abilities, worked to oversee a $350 million budget. Has the respect of his officers. A family man with

Christian values. We need John Lamb to lead the future of Flagler County. Yes he and his family are residents of Flagler County. HOWARD HAWREY Palm Coast

Vote for integrity: John Lamb

Rick Staly

Dear Editor: I am supporting John Lamb for sheriff. As a resident of Flagler County for years now, as well as being a law enforcement officer for 31 years, I recognize this county needs a new and fresh approach. The Observer gave Rick Staly the edge over Lamb and Fleming but at the same time admits controversy surrounds Staly with his past. Staly was the undersheriff in both Orange County and Flagler County, was demoted in Orange County and left Flagler County before his term was up. He ran against the sheriff in both counties after ethical issues on the sheriff emerged. Coincidental? I don’t think so. John Lamb has the experience, knowledge and temperament to right the agency.

ing Rick Staly to be our next sheriff. I took the time to travel to Orange County to speak with many OCSO employees who worked with or for Staly. Each and every person I talked with spoke well of him, were proud to have worked for or with him and praised his character and integrity. After that visit, I decided he is the only candidate with the integrity and qualifications to be our sheriff. Your comments about John Lamb surprise me. Mr. Lamb says that he was assistant chief at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. He neglects to point out that JSO has some 20 assistant chiefs and that assistant chief is five levels below the sheriff. He resigned when a new sheriff was elected, which is customary. But he did not retain his old job. Why? Mr. Lamb says he scored first in the sergeants test when in fact he scored second. Hasn’t Flagler County had enough half-truths, misrepresentations and career embellishments from their sheriffs? Is this the integrity we want in our sheriff? I don’t think so.

MARK P. BIALKOSKI Palm Coast

Staly is the better choice over Lamb Dear Editor: I am a Flagler County resident, and a former police officer, federal agent and CEO. I commend you for endors-

Whisenant has the experience we need

How can you endorse Manfre for sheriff?

Dear Editor: I was not pleased with your recommendation on sheriff’s candidates, particularly Rick Staly, who you pointed to as tainted, as is Sheriff Manfre and Mr. Fleming. Flagler County deserves having officials that are honest and not subject to past ethics problems. The only candidate running of both parties with impeccable honesty and experience is Mark Whisenant. Mark has 25 years of proven experience at local, state and federal and international law enforcement and is the most versed candidate at all levels of counterterrorism. As a chief warrant officer on active reserve with the U.S. Coast Guard, he has proven experience in building a law enforcement capability wherein the officer participants work as a team, not tolerating infighting or lack of training. He is the man the Observer should be supporting.

Dear Editor: I am shocked that you endorsed Jim Manfre as the Democratic nominee for Flagler sheriff. You cite Larry Jones lack of administrative experience as your reason while you casually mention Manfre’s ethical violation convictions. This is not a letter for Jones. Manfre is an unethical person who does not deserve the position he has. Larry Jones is a real officer. A cop. Manfre is an attorney. Larry Jones has faced death with courage and honor. Manfre’s very own sworn testimony during his ethics violation trial was described by the state investigators as untruthful and misleading. Manfre fired a lifelong deputy who needed help and then had the audacity to attend his funeral against the wishes of the Delarosby family and friends. Mr. Delarosby even asked Manfre to leave in the middle of the funeral. When Manfre came into office this last term, he hired an entirely new administrative staff. Every one of them quit the first year of his term and used their golden parachute benefit package up before they left — every single one except Staly. Every officer is afraid that they will be fired without cause at any time. Your endorsement of Manfre ignores all that you believe and know to be true. Shame.

You can expect the festering impasses between the city and its private/public ventures to evaporate when Dennis takes office. Dennis is dedicated to the taxpayers of Palm Coast. He has been a loyal watchdog of taxing and spending with a keen eye for overreach and corruption. Accordingly, Dennis has salted a few tails by exposing the questionable actions of some of our representatives. This is an exercise of our Constitutional rights in which more of us should partake! It is prudent to watch our representatives closely as they decide how much money to take from us and how it is spent, and Dennis will welcome such scrutiny. Dennis is ready to lead and will represent us well to all of those interested in sharing our place in the sun.

McDonald’s view is ‘taxpayers first’ Dear Editor: I am endorsing Dennis McDonald for mayor of Palm Coast. He has attributes that many Americans have come to embrace in a certain presidential candidate, such as plain-spokenness, self-financing his campaign and a career in commercial real estate development. His experience, dynamic approach and “taxpayer first” mentality will fill the leadership vacuum in Palm Coast so our city becomes more attractive to commercial development. Without commercial growth in or around our city, there is little hope of creating the kinds of jobs that produce more mortgage-worthy salaries, or of growing the tax base. Believe me; businesses have looked at our city and run away. Dennis has that rare fiscally sound, pay-as-you-go vision for government which appeals to business prospects. Dear Editor: Milissa Holland is the only candidate for mayor that has held public office before. She showed strong leadership skills and consensus-building abilities during her terms as commissioner and chairwoman on the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners. Milissa possesses the energy, leadership, and experience that we need in our next mayor. We strongly support her stance on maintaining our quality of life, including our superior recreational facilities: golf, tennis, waterways, trails, ball fields, swimming pools and city parks. Milissa realizes these community assets are important for all current and future residents. Palm Coast has been fortunate to have had two exceptional Mayors – Jim Canfield and Jon Netts. We will be batting 3-for-3 by picking Milissa Holland for the next mayor of Palm Coast. She is a longtime resident of Palm Coast who understands our city’s past and has a clear vision of its future.

facts, understand the issues, do what is right for our city and its residents, maintain our quality of life, be fiscally responsible and think out of the box for alternative solutions, Nick is the clear choice. He will bring to the council an ability to meet with potential new companies considering making Palm Coast their new home with an aptitude to talk technology, talent of our local work force and the amenities that exist for a younger generation of Palm Coasters. This is what Palm Coast was intended to be: a thriving community that welcomes all. With Nick’s ingenuity, ability to reach all ages and his gift to be the most courteous young man I know, he truly will be a diplomat for Palm Coast. There is no doubt that he will be an asset to the City Council working to improve the accountability to its residents and city staff but also improve the working relationship with the Flagler County government and County Commission. COUNTY COMMISSION

Meet Arthur McGovern Jr. Dear Editor: Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Arthur McGovern Jr. Currently I am running for City Council District 1 in our great city, Palm Coast. You may ask yourself, Why consider someone that you have never heard of or doesn’t have a track record for holding an office? Even though I have not held a public office, I have owned and operated my own successful business for several years prior to moving to Florida. My education includes a bachelor’s in business management and law. Currently and for the last 20 years, I have been working in and doing special events for Walt Disney World Co. Since our great country is built on people voluntarily giving of their time, talents and finances, it has been my pleasure to say that one of the organizations for which I volunteer is Give Kids the World, an organization that helps families and children with incurable diseases to enjoy their end days. I’ve been a resident of Palm Coast for over 20 years. In that time, I have seen changes — some good and some that I feel could have been better. It is time to stand up and accept the challenge of encouraging and helping the amazing people of our great city to become even better. Some of the changes would be to encourage and develop

‘A man of great integrity, intelligence and thoughtfulness’ Dear Editor: Three words. They are simple, but they are powerful. Donald is running for the seat because he knows it’s time for some fresh ideas and new energy. It’s time to get someone in office who genuinely wants to make a positive difference in people’s lives rather than run for office on empty promises that we hear every election year but are rarely delivered. My father cares about the community that our family moved to more than 25 years ago; the community I grew up in and the community my brother now raises his family in. Flagler County needs integrity, intelligence and thoughtfulness. Flagler County needs Donald O’Brien. Vote O’Brien on Aug. 30. ANDREW O’BRIEN Orlando

O’Brien has the business acumen to help our county Dear Editor: Donald O’Brien is the right man for the job. I have known Donald for over a quarter of a century. In that time I have found him to be hard working, honest, and a person you can count on in time of need. He has been a good friend and would be a good friend for our county. He has his eye on the future and has intentions to make our home an even better place for all our fellow citizens. Don has the business acumen and experience to be fiscally conservative. He understands how to run a successful business, which can only help our county. The time is right for a

change. Please vote for Donald O’Brien for our next county Commissioner. GERARD CURTI Palm Coast

O’Brien: work ethic Dear Editor: Donald O’Brien is an outstanding candidate who deserves our support. Once elected to office he will work hard to represent the residents of our community. He has a work ethic history based on honestly and dedication to the people he represents. “Above and beyond” only begins to describe the contributions he will make when he is elected to the County Commission. DENNIS CUSACK Palm Coast

O’Brien is a man of high integrity Dear Editor: I can personally recommend Donald O’Brien. I have know Donald for about 10 years, first as a person in business and then personally. SUPERVISOR OF ELECTIONS

SCHOOL BOARD Colleen Conklin is an asset to Flagler Schools

Beware the ties and history with Weeks

Dear Editor: When I consider the qualities of a successful elected official, three important traits come to mind: The ability to listen to opinions and perspectives that differ from their own, the willingness to initiate and effect change, and a passionate desire to represent and advocate for those who are unable to speak for themselves. Colleen Conklin has unfailingly demonstrated all of these during her tenure on the Flagler County School Board. While consistency is important, the dynamic aspects of public education in the 21st century require a significant level of flexibility and a critical yet solutions-oriented perspective. Balancing the needs of students with the constraints and initiatives implemented by state and federal legislators can be a very slippery slope, yet Colleen has always been steadfast in her emphasis on doing what she believes is best for the children of Flagler County. Most importantly, she remains accountable to her community when shaping and reshaping policies. As the parent of two children who spent their K-12 years in Flagler County schools, the most outstanding quality I have observed in Colleen Conklin is that she never forgets she is a mom. That perspective guides every decision

Colleen Conklin

she makes. She has never given the impression that she views public education as a business, political or P&L-driven entity. While those things do significantly impact policy and decision making on the School Board, Colleen has always been the voice (sometimes the lone voice) of parental concerns and priorities ensuring that the best possible outcome for the students remains the focal point of every initiative. Colleen Conklin is an asset to the children and parents of Flagler County. KENDALL CLARK Palm Coast

Dear Editor: Before you endorse a candidate, you should look into the history of the office of Supervisor of Elections. I have been a resident of Flagler County for 23 years (retired here after serving in the Army for 21 years). When the retired SOE was in office, we enjoyed 18 years of harmony. We never had a problem getting out to vote, we never had to stand in long lines. When Kim Weeks took over, she closed down some precincts and reduced it to a point that voters were discouraged to go vote because of traveling distances and the lines were so long. Kaiti Lenhart worked for Kim Weeks, and Weeks recommended her for the appointment in her resignation letter. In addition, members of the radical RRR group have contributed to Lenhart’s campaign. It’s public record; go check it out. Kim Weeks was also endorsed by the Observer four years ago.

just what we have been waiting for. I have known Don for over 25 years; he has a work ethic that is second to none. He understands the issues and will do what is right for the county and its residents. He has put in countless hours volunteering for many different civic groups within Flagler County, he truly wants to improve the lives of those who live here. Don’s integrity and ability to listen, moderate and be a leader will be a benefit to the County Commission. He will offer accountability and financial responsibility to all residents of Flagler County. My vote and strong support is for Donald O’Brien.

If we want a true professional in the office that has a clear vision and plan for the future, we will elect Abra Seay. She is the only candidate that never worked for Kim Weeks and the only candidate that has a proven history of excellent leadership.

Registration to implement online voter registration in October 2017. She has worked hard to communicate to the public, “Your vote is your voice.” I am currently the elections clerk of a very busy precinct in Flagler County. I have had the pleasure to work with Kaiti Lenhart for the past almost seven years. I love my job and the people I work with. It is so nice to have a team that leaves the polling place after a long day with a smile on their face and a thank you on their lips. Things have changed over the years. With Kaiti there, we have, as her website states, a “hands-on supervisor, leading the elections team in all aspects of the operations.” This truly sums up the story behind Kaiti in the office of the supervisor of elections. I look forward to working with her in the future and do truly hope she is elected this year and can continue her “mission and vision” for the Flagler County Elections office. She has been a breath of fresh air within the election office and is a pleasure to work with.

Kaiti Lenhart has given us new confidence in the Elections Office Dear Editor: Your endorsement of Kaiti Lenhart is the right choice. I have worked as a poll worker since the year 2000 in Flagler County. I haven’t felt this confident about the election process in a long time. Kaiti Lenhart brought stability to the Elections Office during difficult times. She is the most qualified candidate running for Supervisor of Elections. She has earned the poll workers’ respect. She runs a tight ship and has surrounded herself with competent and well-trained staff that she can depend on. As a poll worker, I feel much more confident when I have to call the office for clarification of an issue. Kaiti has creatively reduced the budget for Flagler County. She has researched and acquired thousands of dollars in federal grant money for much-needed voting equipment. The implementation of Ballot on Demand in this last early voting has reduced the cost of ballot printing. She was appointed to the Committee for Online Voter

Amendment 4 will lower power bills, create jobs, protect health TORY PERFETTI CHAIRMAN OF FLORIDIANS 4 LOWER ENERGY COSTS

STEPHEN SMITH BOARD MEMBER

When the question of solar in Florida comes up, many citizens want to know why there isn’t more. What is one of the biggest barriers holding back meaningful solar development? It’s not the lack of sunshine. The answer is burdensome taxes on solar equipment drive up the cost of solar power. The Sunshine State should not be taxing people who harness the sun. Taxes are one reason Florida has 9 million energy customers but fewer than 12,000 rooftop solar systems. By comparison, New Jersey has over 43,000. Florida voters will have an opportunity to remove this barrier by voting yes on Amendment 4 on the Aug. 30 primary ballot. Amendment 4 will lower solar energy costs by exempting the value of renewable energy devices, including solar panels, from the assessed value of real property and from the tangible personal property tax for 20 years. HERE’S THE BACKGROUND

The solar tax exemption amendment was put on the ballot by the Florida Legislature. It’s a bipartisan, sensible, pro-solar amend-

Kaiti Lenhart

ment seeking to increase the use of solar power, and a policy that all Floridians can support. The title and summary of the amendment can sound complicated and technical, but the concept is simple: lower taxes = lower energy costs. WHY IT MATTERS

First, a definition: “ad valorem” means a tax rate applied to a value. So, if the value of a new solar system is $30,000 and a county’s “millage” rate is 2.0, then the first year tangible personal property tax on the solar system is $600. The system is taxed annually on declining value as it depreciates, which means that this tax can kill the economic benefits derived from going solar in Florida. CLEAN AND SAFE

Florida is heavily dependent on a single energy source at present, specifically imported natural gas which generates almost 2/3 of our electricity. That leaves customers potentially exposed to fuel price spikes on their electricity bills. How much energy does the Sunshine State generate from solar? Sadly, it’s less than 1%. And despite the fact that Florida is one of the largest electricity markets in the country, the Sunshine State was ranked just 16th for installed solar in 2015. Instead of sending

JOBS JOBS JOBS The solar industry is creating jobs 20 times faster than the overall economy. One in 83 new jobs created in the U.S. last year was in the solar industry.

our energy dollars out of state, let’s keep that money here, growing our local economy. Solar power is a clean and safe energy source with zero emissions and zero water usage. Since solar has no emissions, it makes sense to transition our energy sector towards more solar given that a healthier environment will lead to a healthier economy. By lowering the cost of solar, more people will have access to this clean energy source, leading to a more sustainable future. The Amendment 4 tax exemption for solar power is the most immediate action voters can take to jump start meaningful solar power development in the Sunshine State. Lastly, do not mistake Amendment 4 for the non-consumer-friendly utility funded solar amendment appearing on the November ballot as Amendment 1. Amendment 4 in August benefits everyone in Florida and moves solar policy forward in the Sunshine State.

BRIEFS

Two Palm Coast men and a 17-yearold charged with 11 car burglaries Two young men and a 17-yearold boy were arrested Aug. 21 and charged with stealing from the cars of their neighbors in Palm Coast’s B-Section in 11 related burglary cases. The two men were 18-yearold Brian Cordell George, a Biltwell Place resident; and 20-year-old Marcus Dijon McCormick, a Bunker View Drive resident. The 17-year-old boy also lived in the B-section, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office news release. The Sheriff’s Office to a call at 5:32 a.m. Aug. 21 from a Bayside Drive resident who said he saw someone trying to break into his car, according to the news release. The caller confronted the thief, who ran. Deputies came to the area with a police dog team, and arrested the two young men. The investigation led to another home in Palm Coast, where they also arrested the 17-year-old boy. “This is just another excellent example of the community and the FCSO working together to combat crime in Palm Coast,” Sheriff Jim Manfre said in the news release. “Although I am very happy we were able to arrest those responsible, I still cannot stress enough the importance of locking your vehicles.” All of the 11 burglaries were from unlocked vehicles.

Kimberle Weeks

Lawyers for former Kimberle Weeks seek dismissal of charges Attorneys for former elections supervisor Kimberle Weeks have managed to get three of the 12 felony counts against her dismissed. Now, they may try to nix the rest of them, too. Weeks is charged with surreptitiously audio-recording conversations with officials and others. In an Aug. 19 pretrial hearing for Weeks, attorney Dean Bartzokis said he was preparing motions seeking dismissal of more charges — and possibly all of them, he said — pending against Weeks. Bartzokis was also working on a motion to suppress a search warrant that the FDLE used to search Weeks’ office during her time as elections supervisor. But, he said, he hoped the motions to dismiss “will overshadow that to a significant amount.” Weeks’ next pretrial hearing will be at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at the county courthouse.

Robert Zetrouer, jeweler, to spend 25 years in prison for raping child Local jeweler Robert Arthur Zetrouer will spend 25 years in prison for raping a 13-year-old girl. Circuit Judge Matthew Fox-

man sentenced Zetrouer to the 25-year prison sentence in an Aug. 19 sentencing hearing after Zetrouer pleaded no contest to sexual battery of a minor by a person in custodial authority. Zetrouer, now 65 and the owner of Zetrouer Jewelers in City Marketplace, will also be designated a sexual predator. The single charge for which he was sentenced was one of three that were filed; the other two were dropped. Zetrouer was arrested May 1, 2014 after the 13-year-old victim told a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputy that Zetrouer had repeatedly molested her at her home after she returned from school. The Sheriff’s Office audio recorded a phone call between the girl and Zetrouer in which he referred to the abuse.

Seven apply to fill Frank Meeker’s County Commission seat The following people have applied to be appointed by Gov. Rick Scott to the Flagler County Commission District 2 seat held by Commissioner Frank Meeker until his death in July: Kenneth Eubanks Patrick Kelly Howard Holley Larry Jones Jon Netts Marc Bellapianta Greg Hansen The seat is up for gubernatorial appointment because there were 27 months and 28 days remaining in the term.

If there were 28 months or more remaining in the term, as per the Florida Constitution, the seat would be filled during the next upcoming election.

Service to be held for FPC grad, athlete Vincent ‘Vinny’ Pacifico A service will be held the evening of Aug. 25 for Vincent “Vinny” James Pacifico Jr. Pacifico, a graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School, died Aug. 20 at the age of 27 at his home in Palm Coast. The cause of death is unknown as of yet, according to an initial report from the Sheriff’s Office. He played baseball, football and soccer at FPC and went to Shaw University in North Carolina on a football scholarship to study kinesthesiology, said his father, Vinny Pacifico Sr. The family will receive friends and family members at 5-7 p.m. at the chapel at Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home at 511 Old Kings Road S. in Flagler Beach, and a service will follow at 7 p.m. Vinny Pacifico Jr. is survived by his parents, Vincent and Donna Pacifico of Palm Coast, his brother Justin Pacifico and his sister Brittany Pacifico, as well as grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Taking action after the crash The Kathleen Boos Foundation’s goal is to educate children about the true cost of impaired driving. JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

Mark Boos, Kelly Wise-Chapman, and Robert Boos have formed a Foundation in memory of Kathy Boos. Wise-Chapman is holding a family photo.

said this was confirmed by the Florida Highway Patrol. The Observer could not independently verify whether alcohol had anything to do with the crash. “The blood results are still pending in this case. No charges have been filed at this time,” FHP Master Sgt. Dylan Byran said in an email. However it happened, the tragedy has changed the Boos family forever. They started the Kathleen Boos Foundation with the mission to combat drunk driving through education, awareness and community action. “It’s all about moving forward for us,” Wise-Chapman said.

Kathy Boos’ husband and children know exactly when they last spoke to their mother. On Friday, March 11, 2016, her daughter, Kelly Wise-Chapman, spoke to her at 4:25 p.m.; her husband, Robert, at 6 p.m.; and her son, Mark, the last one to speak to her, at 6:06 p.m., when she was in Flagler Beach with her brotherin-law, Carl Boos. A few minutes later Kathy and Carl were killed on A1A. It would be Mark Boos who would come upon the accident after receiving a call from his father that the pair had not made it home. William Gerald Schwarz was the driver of the Mercury that attempted to pass on the twolane road and hit the car Kathy Boos was driving head-on, killing her and her brother-in-law. Schwarz was taken in critical condition to Halifax Hospital where he remained in a coma for several months. How did it happen? That remains in question, although FlaglerLive.com reported that “a doctor who helped at the scene in the immediate aftermath told investigators that she smelled alcohol on the breath of the driver of the Mercury.” The Boos family

and Matanzas high schools to the board to help coordinate with events like Red Ribbon week. The Future Problem Solvers at FPC have indicated an interest in making the foundation’s goal one of their projects. “We want to change the culture; this is not OK, this practice is not OK,” Wise-Chapman said. “If we can change the culture at a younger age, and this can impact their parents, that’s where we want to go. It’s not just drunk driving, it’s impaired driving.” The foundation, a member of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce, hands out literature at First Friday in Flagler Beach, and will be at the Creekside Festival at Princess Place on Oct. 8-9. “We will be parking cars for the Chamber,” Robert Boos said. “We will also have a booth for the foundation. I am looking for six people per hour, for two days – one hour shifts.” He added: “The booth will be the hardest part for our family.” “Creekside will be our first event. It’s about getting information out,” Wise-Chapman said. “Even if there is only one person, one child who listens, we can make a difference that might affect someone else’s family.” To volunteer at the Creekside Festival with the Kathy Boos Foundation, email the Foundation at kathyboosfoundation@ gmail.com. Shifts are in one-hour increments.

SPORTS Welcome back, prep sports

THE REMATCH The crosstown rivalry is heating up. FPC at Matanzas: Friday.

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

T

he Matanzas Pirates and the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs are contemplating two words that begin with the letter “R” as they gear up for the most anticipated rematch in Flagler County sports history: revenge and repeat. After a decade of repeated drubbing from their crosstown rivals, the Pirates got their longawaited win last season, and they made sure the county knew it, by making T-Shirts that read “County Champs.” If you ask them what they expect will happen this Friday, no one’s shying away from the moment. “Walk the dog!” Philip Moultrie emphatically stated. “That’s what we’re going to do. They think last season was a fluke.” On the other side, there were very few dry eyes in the losing locker room last year. The Bulldogs felt like they failed the school and the football program. But, according to receiver Anfernee Brown, the past is the past, and that includes Matanzas’ reign as country champs. SEE REMATCH PAGE 22A

IN CASE YOU MISSED THEM

Que’Shaun Byrd

FPC won its kickoff classic game against Gainesville 21-17. Que’Shaun Byrd scored all three touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Matanzas lost its game to Clay 35-7. Mackenzy Wagner scored the Pirates sole touchdown.

y the time students pass on to middle school, they begin to loathe getting up early in the morning to go to school. But, when those students either participate in sports or have rooting interests, those alarms can’t sound off any faster. “I get excited to go to school, knowing we have a football game that night or practice that day,” said Seabreeze cheerleader Isabella Saucedo. “Also, sports brings you together with a lot of people, which obviously makes school more enjoyable.” A lot of students may never watch football, basketball or bowling, but I’ve seen many of these uninterested-in-sports teens at these events cheering because their school was involved, and/or their friends were competing. Last year, Matanzas Athletics Director Rich Weber spoke about changing his school’s culture with sports, because he believed that competing in sports increased the students’ participation in school activities. Today, and throughout this week, Matanzas High School will be filled with school spirit for the upcoming big game. Because the players care so much, school administrators have linked participation with academic performance. Those who fail to maintain a respectable GPA will not be able to perform. This has caused many athletes to hone in on even their most hated subjects for the sake of game day. Some students actually look forward to the school year, simply so they can play and watch sports. Student-athletes get coaches who motivate them to reach their full potential, and athletes discover certain aspects of learning they enjoy so well, they decide to pursue further in higher learning. “It makes a big difference, playing for a team,” said Flagler Palm Coast football player Ryan Dean. “It helps school go along a lot better.” So yeah, welcome back, Sports. We’ve missed you!

WHO WILL WIN ON FRIDAY? Hey there, football fans. This year, I’ll be making predictions, just for fun. Do you agree with my winners and the scores? Share your thoughts and follow on Twitter @PCOsports or leave a comment on our Facebook page.

Flagler Palm Coast vs. Matanzas FPC wins 24-17. I know why this was chosen as the Bright House Network Game of the Week. This game is expected to break last year’s attendance record. Matanzas made the rivalry interesting last season, winning its first contest in the series. This was, by far, the hardest game to pick this week, but I believe FPC will avenge its loss from last season and beat the Pirates at the ship in a thriller. The Bulldogs played with mostly underclassmen last season and kept the game close. Byrd will have a bigger game this time around.

Jeff Dawsey

Matanzas kicker Hannah Hile

Mainland vs. DeLand

Rematch

Mainland wins 45-17. Coming off an impressive kickoff classic win, Mainland will start stacking its win column this week against rival DeLand. Although the Bulldogs will compete for a quarter or two, Denzel Houston and company will prove to be too much.

“We’re going to come out strong, play together as a team and do them just like we did Gainesville,” Brown said. Brown says he believes the Bulldogs will win 35-0, the same score Pirates’ Dan Leonard gave me, except with Matanzas winning. Both teams can’t be right. The Bulldogs and Pirates will clash at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Matanzas.

Opelka marching up ATP rankings and celebrity Palm Coast’s Reilly Opelka has been moving up the ATP World Tour rankings, especially after reaching his first semifinal in Atlanta, where he lost to fellow

American John Isner in three sets. Opelka has gone from No. 837 to a career-high 295 in a matter of weeks. He recently beat No. 25-ranked Kevin Anderson and took No. 11-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to two tie-breaker sets before losing. Opelka joins five other American teenagers who have cracked the Top 300, which is the most of any country on the ATP World Tour. Catch Opelka in U.S. Open qualifying draw play, which begins today.

Surfers for Autism provides an environment where those with special needs can be themselves. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

H

undreds of relatives of children with special needs crashed the beach to participate in the seventh-annual Surfers for Autism event on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Flagler Beach Pier. Families journeyed from as far as Miami and other neighboring states to take part. “Everybody here is family,” said Doug Brooks, who captured photos of his son, Trace, dashing through the water. “If your kid has a meltdown out here, you don’t feel like a like three-headed monster. Everyone knows what you’re going through, and they try to help out your kid.” Out to show his support for the special needs community was John Fischer, a former Flagler County School Board member, who said, “Kids with disabilities, to me, are role models. With all the hate going on in the world,

these kids play and work together and don’t care about race, looks or anything. The parents who are with them 24/7 also don’t get enough credit. They’re an inspiration to me, and they should be an inspiration to a lot of people.” Tracy Bastante, mother of autistic surfer Damian Richter, remembers when she first allowed him to participate in SFA’s first event nine years ago. “I was scared because he was very little and the waves were big that day,” she said. “But the first time he rode in on that board, he had a smile from ear to ear.” Richter has since competed in many surfing events and has won over 40 trophies. He will be competing in the Special Olympics next month for surfing. “Surfing gave him an identity,” Tracy added. “Surfers for Autism lets us identify with other families. While these kids may be on a different level, they’re all fighting that same battle.”

Vaccinating all cats, even those that don’t go outside, is an important step in keeping them healthy.

L

ast week the Halifax Humane Society issued a warning about an unprecedented spike in confirmed positive tests for feline panleukopenia. Often referred to as feline distemper, panleukopenia is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease. The disease affects the lining of the intestinal track, causing anemic conditions and lowering the resistance to other viral and bacterial illnesses. My cat Samantha is an indoor cat, but she has been vaccinated because even cats that do not go outside and do not come into contact with other unknown cats can contract the illness when their humans track it in, on their clothing 3:49 PM unknowingly, Page 1

or shoes. The virus can remain in the environment for years, which is why when a shelter realizes they have taken in a cat with the disease, a deep clean is required. It is also the reason stray and dropped off cats with no vaccination record are put in a stray kennel, away from the general population and observed. “Knock on wood, we are OK,” Flagler Humane Society Director Amy Carotenuto said. “We are ever vigilant, and every animal that comes through our doors is vaccinated as soon as they come in.” On days when I am at any humane society or rescue, I leave my shoes in the garage and change my clothes as soon as I get home. Too protective? Maybe, but it’s worth it to me.

What does Palm Coast need in a Mayor? Vision

Milissa Holland has the experience and accomplishments needed to lead our city into the future. She was elected and re-elected as Flagler County Commissioner. She has the head and the heart for the position of Mayor of Palm Coast.

Planning

As Chair of the County Commission, Milissa directed the Comprehensive Plan Re-write Committee ensuring future growth would be equipped with adequate infrastructure.

Advocacy

As Commissioner, Milissa protected the interests of beachside residents by testifying before the Governor and Cabinet, winning a unanimous vote in their favor.

Natural Environment

Milissa helped identify Long’s Landing as a key acquisition for the Environmentally Sensitive Land Fund. She was a Board Member of 1000 Friends of Florida, a group dedicated to quality of life issues. Her input while on the Leisure Services Advisory Committee helped shape Waterfront Park.

Spraying the bottom of your shoes with a bleach/water solution, or stepping into a shallow pan of the same solution, to wet just the soles of your shoes, will help prevent tracking the disease into your home. “To combat the spread of disease, Halifax Humane Society staff have been carefully evaluating the vaccination and medical history of every cat in their care, and remain confident all cats currently going out for adoption are protected against FPV,” HHS said in a press release. Before taking any pet into your home, whether you are adopting them, fostering, or cat sitting for a friend, please ask for a copy of their vaccination records.

Kathy, 28616765, is a 1-year-old female cat, available at Flagler Humane Society. Murka, 31613798, is a 1-year-old female cat, available at Flagler Humane Society.

Workforce

Milissa has collaborated with education leaders at Daytona State College and the Central Florida High Tech Corridor Council to develop a tech-smart workforce. She served on the Workforce Development Board of Flagler and Volusia Counties and the Center for Business Excellence.

Utilities

Palm Coast faces water issues in the future. Milissa has the right experience to handle them. She served on the Governor’s Central Florida Supply Plan Committee and UF Partnership for Water, Agriculture and Community Sustainability.

Budgeting

Combing through Flagler County budgets, Milissa found many areas of duplication of services with the City of Palm Coast. She was able to eliminate this waste of taxpayer dollars.

Community Engagement

She started the annual Feed Flagler Thanksgiving dinner event now in its seventh biggest year. Over 6,000 meals served and 1,000 bags of groceries delivered.

Collaboration

She initiated the first regular monthly meetings between Flagler County, area municipalities including Palm Coast and School Board representatives.

Experience Matters. Accomplishments Count!.

Milissa Holland is a long-time resident of the City of Palm Coast, an experienced leader in local, state and national political matters, and a proven, dedicated advocate for the residents of Palm Coast.

Tax Savings

Recreation/Wellness

Swimming pools, tennis courts, golf courses, pickle ball courts, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, hiking and biking trails. An advocate for our recreation amenities, she will work to put them on a strong financial footing.

Flagler Meals on Wheels expands to include pets JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

The Flagler County Meals on Wheels program received a grant intended to help keep seniors and pets together, and well fed. “The funding will be used to provide food, supplies and care for Flagler clients who have pets, all of which can be financially and physically burdensome,” said Senior Services Manager Joanne Hinkel. Citing an article in “Aging and Mental Health,” Hinkel said that seniors with pets are 36% less likely to be lonely, and have 21% fewer doctor visits.

The $1,000 grant was issued through the “Meals on Wheels Loves Pets” initiative, and through a donation from Banfield Charitable Trust. A total of $300,000 has been granted to 162 Meals on Wheels programs this year, and $2.1 million has been granted since October 2015, when the administration responsibilities for the Pet Assistance Grant Program were turned over to Meals on Wheels America. “Along with its Meals on Wheels program, Flagler County Senior Services provides non-medical, in-home services – including homemaking, personal care and respite –

Palm Coast y t i C l u f i t u a e Our B “I have always been drawn to the natural beauty in Palm Coast. Whether it is our old growth oak forests or pristine waterways, there is much to enjoy every day. As a public official I would feel a special obligation to preserve and enhance what is here. Of course, we all look forward to a future with new shopping, restaurants, a theater, employment opportunities, homes and more. But nobody wants to give up the sight of herons swooping down the Intracoastal at sunrise. Or golfers sinking their last putts of the afternoon. I have built a career looking at how to make communities livable and sustainable. My years of experience give me a unique vision for our future. Tannah Mifarsi, a kindergarten teacher at Bunnell Elementary got more than she expected when she contacted Operation Changing Lives about some bookshelves she wanted to buy for her classroom. “She (Jennifer Suggs, public relations coordinator) asked what school I was working at and I told her BES,” Mifarsi said. “She told me she wanted to donate any supplies I needed for my classroom.” Mifarsi said the donations included primary composition books that Mifarsi was planning on purchasing herself. Operation Changing Lives donated $500 of supplies to Bunnell Elementary, to kick-off the new school year. Operation Changing Lives is a nonprofit organization based in Daytona Beach, founded by Dr. Curtis Schalit and Dr. John Akers in 2008. The organization’s purpose is to provide surgical care to patients with extreme facial deformities, and help local children in need. Along with their colleagues Dr. Roger Thayer and Dr. Brian Hamilton, the team works together with business owner Cherise Wintz, director, and Jennifer Suggs,

public relations coordinator, to create events in the community to support their cause. Annual events include a golf tournament, paddle board event, and an upcoming vent, 5k Run/Walk in Daytona Beach Shores. Schalit and his wife Maria are also the founders of the Flagler Wolf Pack Youth Football team. “Dr. Schalit was the founder of the Wolf Pack football team, so they knew how many families and classrooms would benefit with the purchase of these supplies,” Mifarsi said.

Holland Park stuck at 78% completion rating

Johnson Orthodontics marks 10,000 patients in 17 years

Just east of Goodwill, construction is underway for a Superwash Express car wash at 110 Cypress Point Parkway. A Google search reveals it will be the fourth car wash in Palm Coast. The permit was for more than $900,000, and the company has another location in Port Orange.

According to the city of Palm Coast’s Week In Review, progress on the Holland Park renovation is stuck at 78% complete for the third week in a row. This week, volleyball posts were installed, as well as fence posts in the dog park and tennis court. Work continues on the playground and the sidewalk construction.

Ten thousand. That’s the estimate by Dr. Paul Johnson, owner of Johnson Orthodontics, for the number of patients he has seen so far in his 17 years in Palm Coast, at 25 Pine Cone Drive, Suite 1. Of those 10,000, he estimates 4,000 teens and adults have been fitted with braces. In his career, Johnson has also donated over $1.2 million to over 80 local and international charities, including Samaritans Purse, Alpha Pregnancy

Center, Cornerstone, the local schools and churches. He began like everyone else, with one patient. Johnson graduated from the University of Florida residency program on a Thursday in 1999, and saw his first patient the next Tuesday. The first office in Palm Coast was on Cypress Point Parkway, about a block from where it is now. Johnson had one employee when he started, and now he has seven. In his 17 years, Johnson has treated people from Alaska, South Florida and Saudi Arabia in addition to local residents. Call 445-7671.

Twelve singlefamily homes to be built The city issued a dozen singlefamily home permits last week, including two on the same street — Park Place Circle — by Holiday Builders. The most expensive home permit is for $368,000 by Skyway Builders at 12 Chinier St. The are also 15 permits issued for additions or alterations to existing homes, including one for $83,000 at 21 Rymen Lane.
