Locals aren’t worried, though. “I usually surf during hurricanes,” said Willy Servive. “And I just bought this lava-resistant suit.” His girlfriend, Beth R. Trump doesn’t trust Clinton but thinks it would be funny if a former president was VP. GEOFFREY TOOPIN SENIOR REPORTER

In an unprecedented act of reaching across the aisle, Donald J. Trump announced yesterday that he has selected Bill Clinton as his vice president as he enters the last several months of the campaign. “My adviser, who is now fired, told me, ‘Bill Clinton is Hillary’s husband,’” Trump said at a Flagler County protest. “I told him, ‘Look, I love Bill Clinton. I love Bill Clinton. I probably love him more than Hillary does. She won’t mind if I borrow him for four years. Well, let’s face it — eight years.” Trump said he thinks Bill is a winner, and he could come in handy if any tough policy questions arise that don’t involve forcing people to build walls. Bill Clinton said, “I look forward to making America great again with The Donald.” He then put on a red baseball cap to prove it. At a campaign rally in New York, Hillary Clinton said she was pleased with her husband’s decision. “This should divert the media’s attention away from my emails for a few hours,” she said. At a later interview, Trump added, “I’m really rich.” SEE TRUMP PAGE 2A

A 7-foot gator, or it might be a crocodile, has been adopted by the Wilsons, who live in the C-section of Palm Coast. “The kids love Frank,” said Archimedes Wilson, who owns the home. “Unfortunately, our neighbor’s dog disappeared, but we bought a replacement before they found out.” The gator crawled into the family’s pool after a heavy rainstorm and appears content to stay. The family has purchased a 5-foot leash to take Frank for walks in the neighborhood. “It’s a short leash,” Wilson said. “But it’s still a good idea to stay

YOUR TOWN PALM COAST SURVIVOR HELPS OUT ORMOND RELAY

When she was 12, Mia Bryant woke up with a knot the size of a walnut on the side of her neck. Thanks to a mix-up in the lab results, she was misdiagnosed, and at 14, when doctors correctly diagnosed her with stage four Hodgkin’s lymphoma, she was given only three months to live. But after 33 surgeries, she was declared in remission at 23 years old. Then, just a month ago, another tumor was found. But it was removed early enough, and she is still in remission. Today, she is the survivor chairwoman of the Ormond Beach Relay For Life. “Having my family support is what really helped me get to this point,” she said. “I try to encourage other people to know that just because you get a diagnosis doesn’t mean it’s the last say so. There is a chance.”

The ceremony marked the conclusion of an 18-year project the county has been planned ever since the wildfires of 1998 demonstrated why the additional exit is needed. The interchange is expected to improve safety during such crises, and also to fuel economic development and alleviate congestion on local roads. “This is a tremendous asset for the people who live in the northern half of our city, the northern half of our county,” Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts said. “I can hard-

For the first time in the lengthy series of pretrials in the case against former elections supervisor Kimberle Weeks case, Weeks herself showed up in court March 24 as her attorney tried to convince the judge to split the one case into several and to throw out some of the 12 felony counts Weeks is charged with. Florida law makes it illegal to record someone without their consent and to then distribute that recording, and Weeks is charged with seven counts of illegally recording conversations of local and state officials and others, and with five counts of disseminating those recordings.

Joerg Jaeger, Weeks’ attorney, wants several of the dissemination charges thrown out. The reason? Weeks had played the recording in question — a whispered conversation between County Attorney Al Hadeed and County Commissioner Charlie Ericksen — during a public Canvassing Board meeting before sending it out to the NewsJournal, WNZF and a third party. By playing the recording during a public meeting, Jaeger said, she’d made it public record, and shouldn’t be prosecuted for distributing it thereafter. “The argument that the defense is propounding is too incredulous to make sense,” Assistant State Attorney Jason Lewis said. “To say that if someone plays something unlawfully at a public hearing, it converts it into a public record. ... It just doesn’t make sense.” If that were the case, he said, anyone who recorded something illegally and wanted to be able to distribute it could just go to any public government meeting, play the recording during the time set aside for public comment, then feel free to distribute it at will. Circuit Judge Margaret Hudson didn’t rule at a hearing March 24 on Jaeger’s motion to have those charges thrown out, saying she wanted to look at precedent. But she wasn’t persuaded. Jaeger made other motions, but Hudson didn’t rule on them at the hearing. He said that in one instance, in which Weeks recorded a phone

conversation with Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner and others in his office, that Detzner hadn’t explicitly denied her permission to record because he’d said only that he was “not comfortable” with that, rather than simply, “No.” Hudson told him he could argue that matter at trial. Jaeger also motioned to have the judge separate the trial into three different ones, based on the details of the different recordings. The State Attorney’s Office has sought to try all 12 counts at once, Lewis said, in order to establish a common intent and show that the recordings weren’t accidental. Still, the State Attorney’s Office didn’t object per se to dividing the case, and the judge was willing to consider the defense’s request to separate counts two and three, in which Weeks was charged with recording people while not acting in her official capacity, from the other counts, in which she recorded them while acting as the county’s elections supervisor. Two lawmen testified at the hearing: Phil Lindley, the nowretired FDLE agent who led the search of Weeks’ office, and Holly Hill Police Officer Michael Coomans, who’d investigated a case concerning Weeks’ son. Weeks had recorded a phone conversation with Coomans without his knowledge, and Jaeger sought to get him to say he had no expectation of privacy in that conversation: Several other people had joined the conversation, some of them on speakerphone. How did Coomans even know who was listening in? Jaeger asked. “She told me who was present, and I believed her,” the officer replied. Lindley talked about his search of Weeks’ office, noting that when he showed up requesting five documents from Weeks — all of them public record — she at first refused to turn them over. When she did supply some of them, she made him sign for them, a move Lindley called “extraordinary.” Jaeger tried to sow doubt about whether the recording of the whispered conversation between Ericksen and Hadeed was in fact illegal. Weeks made the recording during the scheduled time for a Canvassing Board meeting; Ericksen was a Canvassing Board alternate, while Hadeed was the Canvassing Board attorney and also the county attorney. The defense argued that the recording was taken in the context of a public meeting, which is legal to record under the state’s open records laws. But the two men had the conversation while they were alone in one room after the Canvassing Board had left that room and convened in a neighboring room to count ballots. Hadeed had testified to Lindley that he considered the conversation private; neither man knew they were being recorded. But they had some warning, Jaeger suggested: He showed Lindley a photograph of a sign on the door to the Supervisor of Elections office, which says the premises may be recorded. Lindley said he hadn’t noticed or read it. When he enters a restaurant, he said, he doesn’t read the door signs saying what credit cards are accepted, either. And, Lindley said, when he spoke to the Canvassing Board members, “Everyone said they’d been told (by Weeks) they were not being recorded.”

The county dedicated the Matanzas Woods Parkway overpass in 2006. Overall, the project — including the overpass — has cost about $25.1 million. The county’s share of that cost was about $1.26 million, according to a Flagler County news release. The interchange itself cost $12.5 million, including $9 million in construction costs; the Florida Department of Transportation and the federal government paid about 94% of the project cost, according to the news release. The new Matanzas Woods interchange is the third and northernmost I-95 interchange in Flagler County. Four egg hunts, one family room

Observer

How do you make sure every kid has a fun Easter egg hunt when they range in age from 1 to 12?

“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

On Easter Sunday, it was a challenge to have a successful egg hunt for our four children because they are spread out in their ages and understanding. First, you have Jackson. He’s 12 years old, so he’s wise to the whole setup. He found all his eggs in about four seconds and then spent the rest of the time torturing his 9-year-old brother, Grant. From the kitchen, Jackson apparently found one of Grant’s eggs on the counter next to the toaster, so he said,

“Hey, Grant, do you want some — toast — for breakfast?” Grant hollered at him, “I said I don’t want any hints!” Grant was intent on making the pleasure last as long as possible. Later, on the way to church, he kept asking Hailey and me what his goal should be. “Should I try to make it last until Halloween?” he asked. “Or my birthday?” Ellie, meanwhile, is 6. She’s enthralled by the magic of the Easter Bunny. One egg was found on the top of a bookshelf, and Ellie’s eyes lit up. “Wow!” she said. “How did the Easter Bunny get up that high?” “I don’t know,” I said to her. “How tall do you think the Easter Bunny is?” She held her hands about 12 inches apart. “Hmm,” I said. “Maybe so. So how did he get up there?”

BUNNY COULD LEARN FROM SANTA On the way to school one day last week, I warned my children that they needed to behave. Otherwise, the Easter Bunny might leave coal in their baskets. Grant, 9, cocked his head to one side and said, “Dad, that’s Santa’s gig.”

FRIEDRICH HAYEK “Road to Serfdom,” 1944

Kennedy, 17 months old, helped put stickers on the real Easter eggs. We’re smart enough to not hide the real eggs — just the plastic kind.

“I guess he hopped up the shelves.” As she found egg after egg, Ellie grew somewhat frustrated. Apparently, she doesn’t like jelly beans as much as the Easter Bunny thought. She said, to no one in the room, “Would you just give up on giving me jelly beans!” Then we have Kennedy, the youngest of the four. At 17 months, she slept in and was the last to join the egg hunt. She would pick one up and shake it like a rattle. Inside,

there were several Mini M&Ms of different colors, each perfectly engineered to produce a rainbow of drool on her pajamas. Out of all the kids, I’m the easiest to please when it comes to the egg hunt. I found one with some of last year’s candy in it: Chewy Sprees, which are my favorite. “Look at this!” I said, holding up the candy to show my wife, Hailey. And, ignoring her look of disgust, I tossed them into my mouth. Delicious!

LET TERS

TO ADVERTISE Readers shouldn’t get so upset by opinions different from theirs Dear Editor: Newspapers routinely endorse or recommend against political candidates. So it is with surprise that I have read the letters in your last two issues. Although I didn’t agree with some of the comments in your editorial, I recognize that freedom of speech is not something that applies to just those whose opinions I happen to agree with. Case in point: all the vulgar, offensive comments that Mr. Trump has made in the course of his campaign. I am disgusted by them, but I recognize his right to say them. As a reasonably intelligent person, I look at information from many sources, whether making a voting or buying decision. I don’t make decisions based solely on someone else’s view. To those so concerned over someone expressing a differing opinion, I say remember that this is a democracy. All opinions have equal value. If you are bothered by different points of view, just stick to FAUX News. You will never hear a different point of view there. EDITH CAMPINS Palm Coast

First Amendment applies to newspaper editors, too Dear Editor: I am amazed, startled and bewildered by the letters from

readers who admonished Mr. Walsh and others for expressing their personal opinions on the political aspects of the upcoming election. Some letters are downright insulting, expressing their concerns and assumptions that the people in charge of the news were trying to sway their opinion. First of all, if a few words can change or make a difference in who you were planning to vote for, you didn’t really have grasp on your choice to begin with. If the attitudes weren’t so sad, they would be comical. You’re saying that all news should portray the wishes and will of the people. No straying from that notion. Well, let me tell you the facts of life: A newspaper is not owned by the people. It is privately owned, and it is those people who can and do have the right to express their own opinions on each and everything they chose to write about. They have the right to express their opinion on who they are behind, and express their opinion of who they do not like and why. You, the people, do not own the paper, so therefore have no right in whatever they chose to write. First Amendment gives you the right to speak but not speak and tell others what they can say. That’s why we have the First Amendment. So it would behoove you to chill with your comments. IRENE PICKERING Palm Coast

Enforcement needed near stop signs at bus stops Dear Editor: I have read your article, “Let’s try this: Three bus stops begin pilot program,” in the Observer on March 3. I am happy to hear that the schools are trying such a program. I want to suggest that especially the stops around the crossing at Frontier Drive are also removed because a lot of drivers park their cars there even though signs forbid to park 10 feet before the sign. Moreover, they park in front of private properties, blocking the driveways. The issue arises during morning and evening times when cars are parked and the school bus inhibits smooth traffic. At this point, a lot of cars block the street, and it is impossible to enter from Frontier Drive. SLAWOMIR KOSSAKOWSKI Palm Coast

Absence of signs makes A1A beautiful Dear Editor: We now have groups like the A1A Scenic Byway, and, apparently, their offshoot, the Friends of A1A, meddling inside the city boundaries of both Flagler Beach and Beverly Beach, once again creating busywork, at taxpayer expense. These two busybody groups are now trying to jam even more large abusive signage down the throats of our residents. Instead, if they are truly concerned with scenic beauty, they should instead be

attempting to get hundreds of signs removed. We already have enough ugly signs in town to build our very own Eiffel tower. None of this signage is being coordinated; they are simply placed out there by numerous other state, and local entities. Where is the common sense in this thinking? After all, four years ago, our city had an estimated 600 signs (or one hundred per mile) on just the Flagler Beach portion of A1A alone, the very highway these people like to call scenic. It’s ludicrous. Realizing that the scenic view of our beautiful ocean was fast disappearing behind a wall of signage, I contacted both the secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation and Gov. Rick Scott about my concern. Shortly after notification, low and behold, and to their credit, approximately 150 signs were removed in a matter of months. That, my friends, is making our city scenic. Some things should not be considered negotiable, especially when the present signage in this small town is already far too abusive.

STICKY FINGERS: BOYS STEAL ELECTRONICS, CHOCOLATE 1:54 p.m. 600 block of Palm Coast Parkway SW. Grand theft: Deputies arrived at a local department store to find an employee chasing three boys out. The boys stopped on the sidewalk when they saw the cops. The employee said she’d seen one of the boys, a 14-year-old, grab two chocolate bars, enter the bathroom, and then walk out without them. That boy and another teen, a 16-year-old, then walked to the electronics section, where the 14-year-old took a pair of headphones and two phone cases and stuffed them into his backpack, then grabbed three more phone cases and stuck them in the 16-year-old’s backpack, then grabbed two more phone cases and another pair of headphones and stuck them in his. When the teens walked out of the store, staff were waiting for them. The 14-year-old had $325.86 worth of merchandise in his pack, and the 16-year-old had $479.95 worth in his. Deputies arrested them. The third boy, who turned out to be uninvolved, was released to his mom.

‘WATERCOLOR’: WAS PAINT DUMPED IN NEW WELL? 3:10 p.m. Sesame Boulevard and Sleepy Hollow Trail. Property damage: Someone called the Sheriff’s Office to report two kids they believed were dumping paint down a city of Palm Coast well that is not yet in use. Deputies caught one of the kids, who denied opening the well and putting anything in it. A city contractor lowered a camera into the well and didn’t find any evidence that the well was compromised.

SLOVENLY CAR THIEF RETURNS TO CRIME SCENE? 11:16 p.m. First block of Round Tree Drive. Attempted stolen vehicle: A thief who stole a Chevy Malibu March 15 and then returned it with a condom wrapper on the floorboards — and kept the keys — may have returned. The victim told deputies that after the break-in he’d had the ignition re-keyed, but not the car’s door locks. On March 25, he heard the car alarm go off and saw a man in a sweatshirt sitting in the driver’s seat. The man ran. The victim believed the man was the same one who took the car March 15. Deputies couldn’t find the thief.

The most dangerous intersections on Belle Terre The intersection of Belle Terre Boulevard and State Road 100 topped the list, with 50 crashes between 2012 and 2015.

WHERE ARE THE ACCIDENTS HAPPENING?

There are 10 intersections on Belle Terre Parkway/Belle Terre Boulevard that had 10 or more crashes between 2012 and 2015, and the city wants to make them safer. “We’re trying to take a look at it and be proactive,” City Manager Jim Landon told Palm Coast City Council members as staff members gave a presentation on Belle Terre Parkway traffic at a City Council workshop March 29. Intersections with the most crashes tend to be the ones with delays caused by heavy traffic volume, which leads to impatient drivers, Landon said. The city, with the support of the River to Sea Transportation Planning Organization, studied intersections along the 8.8-mile stretch of Belle Terre Parkway/ Belle Terre Boulevard between U.S. 1 and Pine Lakes Parkway. Right now, the intersections aren’t overwhelmed: They all operate an an “acceptable level of service,” which the city considers to be a C or better on an A-to-F grading scale. But some intersections would drop below a C level in the future, Palm Coast Traffic Engineer Sean Costello told the council, if there

are no road improvements made. Those include the intersections with S.R. 100, Eastwood Drive, Easthampton Boulevard, Royal Palms Parkway, Point Pleasant Drive, Ponce DeLeon Drive, Pine Grove Drive, Whippoorwill Drive, Pritchard Drive and Parkview Drive. The city has options. In some cases, the best way to make the intersections safer is to add turn

lanes, or a median, or new signs. Others might need a new signal, but lights are often not the best way to make intersections safer, Landon said. “The perception of the public is that if you have crashes, the best thing you can do is put a signal up,” he said. But rear-end crashes — the most common type in the city — tend to occur at signalized intersections or at intersections

HOW TO FIX IT Priorities for intersection improvements along Belle Terre Parkway: - At Whippoorwill Drive: Add southbound right turn lane - At Point Pleasant Drive: Add northbound right turn lane - At Ponce DeLeon Drive: Add northbound right turn lane - At Pritchard Drive: Add northbound right turn lane - At State Road 100: Add northbound right turn lane (Transportation Impact Fee funded); Add eastbound left turn lane (FDOT funding) - At Eastwood Drive/Market Avenue: Signalize Source: Palm Coast city staff presentation

where people slow down suddenly for a turn in an area where there isn’t a turn lane. Now that the city has identified problem spots, Landon said, “Now we need to identify the biggest priority from a dollar standpoint.” About 3,900 to 7,200 vehicles travel Belle Terre Boulevard daily, and about 24,000 to 28,000 travel Belle Terre Parkway daily, Costello said. Those numbers are expected to rise to 7,100 to 13,000 vehicles per day for Belle Terre Boulevard and 31,000 to 36,000 vehicles per day for Belle Terre Parkway by the year 2030.

BRIEFS Man leads deputy on 110-mph car chase, crashes in front of Bimini Bar, flees on foot An 18-year-old led a local deputy on a 110-mph car chase, then flipped his car in front of the Bimini Bar on State Road 100 and fled on foot. Deputies using a search dog tracked the young man down an hour and 15 minutes later. The incident happened at about 11:50 p.m. March 25, as a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputy tried to stop a blue 2005 Pontiac that was speeding east on State Road 100 near County Road 302. The deputy turned on lights and siren, but the car sped up. “My calibrated speedometer in my patrol vehicle indicated 110 mph,” the deputy wrote in a report. The car continued speeding east, and the driver couldn’t handle it as it entered the turn near Bimini Bar and Deen Road. The Pontiac hit the ditch on the east side of the road and flipped, landing on its roof. A search dog named Repo led deputies to the railroad tracks behind O’Reilly’s Auto Parts, where they found 18-year-old Daytona Beach resident Rasheen Orien Smith. The young man had some scratches and said his head hurt, but otherwise was not injured. Smith is charged with one count of fleeing and eluding an officer and one count of leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

County to consider LGBT Proposed ‘monopine’ tower nondiscrimination protections to improve cell signal reception

JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

The proposed cell tower is supposed to look like a giant pine tree. But Palm Coast City Councilman Bill McGuire thinks it looks more like something else — something you’d use “if you’ve got a giant bottle and you want to wash it,” he joked at a March 29 Palm Coast City Council meeting. Still, the council raised no major objections to the proposed 150-foot tower, which would be placed at 4 Corporate Drive and is expected to improve cell reception for anyone whose cell plan carrier signs on to use the tower: ATT has already done so. The tower can support up to four carriers. “We’ve got dead zones that we’re well aware of that are getting worse and worse, because it’s not just where the towers are, it’s also how many people are trying to use those towers,” City Manager Jim Landon told the council. Councilman Jason DeLorenzo said he’s had signal problems with ATT in the area. “They can put one in my backyard, honestly; it’s so bad,” DeLorenzo said. The proposed initial five-year land lease would require the tower company, American Tower, to

replied. “I mean, this is literally a quarter mile or less from that (Fire Station No. 21) location.” Netts said it seems the county itself doesn’t yet know what it will need. Landon said that the proposed emergency radio system upgrade is “years out” at this point. “What’s so bizarre about this conversation is our whole focus was on the actual radios themselves ... and then — poof, out of the middle of nowhere, then all of a sudden, ‘Oh, well we’ve got this tower issue,’” Landon said. “It’s frustrating because we should know by now, but we don’t.”

pay the city $24,000 annually, increasing 3% each year. The monopine tower’s limbs would conceal antennae that the tower company could not, as per city code, place on a regular flagpole-style monopole tower. The council will vote on the proposed tower at a future meeting. Councilman Jason DeLorenzo asked if the tower could be placed at city Fire Station No. 21 on Corporate Drive, a location that has been proposed as a possible site for a new 350-foot emergency radio tower as the county upgrades to a digital system that may require more towers, including one or more within the city limits. That wouldn’t necessarily work, said city Information Technology Director Steve Viscardi, because moving the telecommunications tower even a quarter mile in one direction from the proposed site just west of the county library branch could leave coverage holes that carriers want to fill. Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts asked Viscardi if the monopine tower could also be used for emergency radio communication. It could be, Viscardi replied, but the 150-foot tower might not have good signal penetration inside buildings. Netts said planning is difficult because the county hasn’t told the city how many emergency radio towers it might need for its upgrade. “We need to know,” DeLorenzo

Flagler County may add “personal gender identity and sexual orientation” to a list of qualities that may not be used as a basis for discrimination in housing, extending protections to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. “We have the protected class of people that you always have in discrimination where it’s race color, religion, sex age handicap, familial status ancestry or national origin,” County Commissioner Barbara Revels said at a March 21 commission meeting. “And I would like consideration to add to that, ‘and personal identity or sexual orientation.’ That you cannot discriminate based on any of those items.” No commissioners objected. “That’s kind of the law of the land right now anyway,” Commissioner Frank Meeker said. The city of Palm Coast has housing nondiscrimination protections that cover sexual orientation — alongside race, color, sex, religion, national origin, familial status and handicap — but do not cover gender identity. The housing nondiscrimination protections in the cities of Bunnell and Flagler Beach do not have protections for either sexual orientation or gender identity, and Beverly Beach does not have a housing nondiscrimination ordinance. Volusia County includes sexual orientation and gender identity in its human rights ordinance, as do

The 150-foot tower would carry ATT and up to three more cell carriers.

Broward County, Orange County, Palm Beach County and many other municipalities in the state. But there are no explicit federal housing non-discrimination protections on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, and many states, including Florida, do not have such protections for housing or for employment or public accommodations. Revels’ announcement came just two days before North Carolina passed a law overturning all local nondiscrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, barring municipalities from passing any new ones and requiring transgender people to use bathrooms that match the sex on their birth certificates. The law has prompted a backlash from corporations. On March 28, the governor of Georgia vetoed a bill which would have allowed individuals and businesses to discriminate against gay or transgender people on the basis of religious belief. The veto followed opposition to the legislation from corporations including Disney, Apple, Bank of America and Home Depot. Revels suggested that county staff could also consider adding protections in parts of the county code other than the housing section. “This is just the one section on housing, so there might be other areas,” she said. County staff will examine the code of ordinances and return to the commission with proposals.

BRIEFS Presidential poetry at the Flagler County Library Information provided by news release from the Friends of the Library: The Flagler County Public Library annual poetry readings will be presented by Muriel Levy and Friends at 1 p.m., Friday, April 1 in the Doug Cisney Room at the library, 2500 Palm Coast Parkway. Poetry by or about U.S. Presidents from George Washington to Barack Obama will be read by local guest speakers. (He’s from Georgia.) More than 40 readers will entertain and educate during the event. Light refreshments will be served.

Flagler copter pilot trained to fight fire from the air

The following is an edited news release from the Flagler County communications office: Flagler County’s helicopter pilot, Todd Whaley, has wanted to be airborne his whole life. But it wasn’t until the first time he fought fire from a helicopter that he knew what he was destined to be. “My first job out of flight school was with a small company out of Logan, West Virginia fighting fire and I fell in love with it,” Whaley said. “Firefighting from a helicopter is one of the most exhilarating things I’ve ever done. see the progress when you hit it directly with a bucket of water.” Whaley, whose first name is actually Steven though he goes by Todd, entered the Navy and later used the G.I. Bill to become an A&P (airframe and power plant) certified maintenance technician through the Federal Aviation Administration. He began flying airplanes in 1999 and helicopters in 2001. He has since accumulated more than 4,000 flight hours. Whaley calls the job with Flagler County — fighting fire, air ambulance, marine rescue, as well as search and rescue — his “dream job.” He has worked for the county just over two years. “Fighting fire from a helicopter is concentration intensive because you are doing both: flying an aircraft and fighting a fire,” Whaley said. “I absolutely love coming to work.” When he isn’t flying a helicopter, Whaley enjoys flying airplanes, skydiving and scuba diving.

Almost 20 cakes brought in close to $1,000 for the G.W. Carver Center March 26 during a fundraising event that brought in thousands of dollars overall, and which center director Cheryl Massaro hopes to make an annual one. The Motown Madness fundraiser, with plates selling at $50 each, was a “huge success,” Massaro said. “We had a compliment of at least 150 people, and the highlight of the evening was the youth entertainment that was provided, which was local students who participated in our local talent show here at the youth center,” she said. “It was a good time had by all, and I’m sure it’s something we’ll make an annual thing in the future.” Final numbers weren’t in yet, Massaro said, but it looked like the fundraiser brought the center about $5,000, perhaps $800 of it from the 18 specialty cakes center supporters brought for the event’s cake auction, where they were auctioned off by district Superintendent Jacob Oliva. “We made so much money on our cake auction,” Massaro said. “They pranced those cakes around, and we had one cake catch $80.” Each cake brought in

about $20 or more, Massaro said, with a cake called a hummingbird cake bringing in the most. The rock band Traces of Gold provided music, Massaro said, and Chicken Pantry brought meals. Meanwhile, the Carver Center is preparing for its annual online auction, which begins April 6 and runs through April 27. It brought in more than $7,300 last year. CARVER CENTER PLANS FOR ADDITION, SEEKS FUNDING The G.W. Carver Center would like to add a new wing to the front of the building, and has applied through the county for a federal grant to fund it. The new wing would include expandable classrooms that can be customized to the size of a class, office space, a small cafeteria, and restrooms. “We have so many great programs going on, including Road to Success, that we would like to expand the space so we can have more of those programs,” center Director Cheryl Massaro said.

Admission to the Flagler County Fair & Youth Show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will include the “Rock n’ Rib Fest” with live music. The addition is the result of a new partnership with Flagler County’s five radio stations. “It’s really two great events rolled into one,” said Penny Buckles, the fair vice president and general manager. “The radio stations are bringing a major concert to the rodeo arena.” No one has to go hungry at the fair. On Friday, the Rock n’ Rib Fest will sell the traditional ribs. On Saturday, the third annual Smokin’ on the Farm BBQ contest will also have mouths watering. “We have 15 competitors who will be cooking more meat than they need for us to sell for our fundraiser,” Buckles said. Barbecue contestants will be setting up on Friday evening, and the grills will start smoking at 4 a.m. Saturday. Awards are presented at 5 p.m. Saturday. Dinner is available at 6 p.m. “This is 4-H- and FFA-based, and they serve and help,” Buckles said. “We donate part of the fundraising money back to them.”

Buckles said she expects the live entertainment on Saturday will increase barbecue attendance and the amount raised. Country music legends Restless Heart will take the stage at 8 p.m., Friday, April 8. Local country bands Patrick Gibson and Southern Chaos will open for the headliner at 5 p.m. Live music returns Saturday, April 9, with Kids Rock The Nation at noon, Nova Rex at 4 p.m., followed by Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute at 6 p.m., and The Ultimate Foreigner Tribute at 8 p.m. The evening will conclude with a firework finale at 9:30 p.m. Tony Thornock, a Gene Simmons impersonator, will also perform. Sunday, April 10, is the final day and will showcase young local talents produced by Narrow Magazine from noon to 4 p.m. The marriage between the fair coordinators and the radio station came about when David Ayres, vice president and general manager of Kix Country 98.7 & Beach 92.7, was looking for a new group to partner with. “We’re really excited about working with the fair and taking it to a new level,” Ayres said. “I asked what they were doing with the arena during the fair and they said, ‘nothing.’ It was peanut butter and chocolate.”

“It is considered by many to be the mother of all arts,” Palmer said. “Architecture is not done by one person in a dark room over a drawing board any longer. It’s done by a team of people. We are sitting around, basically sitting on top of one another drawing, looking at books, studying things together.” His presentation ended with four words. Four words he said are on T-shirts he and his wife have: “Proceed and Be Bold.” Flagler Schools Superintendent Jacob Oliva, with the help of School Board members Colleen Conklin, Janet MacDonald and Trevor Tucker, presented each inductee with a Hall of Fame plaque. This presentation wasn’t the end of the program for the inductees. Nineteen FPC students had been selected to stay for the next portion and have some personal time to ask questions and pull more tips from those who have gone before them.

Three Flagler Palm Coast High School graduates returned to their alma mater to share their art career successes with current students. All three had been in Ed Beckett’s classes when at FPC and each took different paths to achieve the dreams they had in high school. Christina Katsolis, class of 2000; A.J. Neste, class of 1998; and Sean Palmer, class of 2001 were recognized as being role models for the students at FPC interested in a career in the arts. They are also the first students to be inducted into the newly established Arts Hall of Fame. Ann DeLucia, the president of the Flagler County Art League, opened the event at the Flagler

A true home town girl. “I joke how I haven’t gone very far in life,” Katsolis said. “I was born at Halifax Hospital and I work right across the street.” A.J. Neste spoke about how he has spent the past 15 years traveling the world with his camera. He found his initial success not by surfing the waves, but by taking photos of those who were. He spoke about how he became the surf photographer for the USA surf team and how he has come back to Florida with his family to be the senior photographer for Interpret Studios in Jacksonville. “Don’t take your ideas for granted,” he said. “If I can motivate just one person here you would make it all worth it.” Sean Palmer, architect and owner of Palmer Studio Architecture & Interiors in Flagler Beach, spoke about what art has to do with architecture.

We’ve encouraged students with scholarships for those going on to higher education in the arts,” DeLucia said. “Today, we would like to encourage our students to find a way to combine the love of art with a successful career. This is the first of what we hope to be many more programs.” Ed Beckett has been working toward the creation of this program for much of his 28 years at Flagler Palm Coast High School. He thanked FCAL for acquiring a grant from the city of Palm Coast to make Art Works a reality. Beckett introduced each of the former students, who gave presentations explaining their individual paths to success. “They were all so very excited to come here and give back to the kids,” he said. “That’s what is so exciting about having them here.” Katsolis is the education coor-

“You are hanging from the edge of a cliff 500 yards in the air. The only thing between you and falling to the ground is a piece of rope with the person of your choice on the other end. “Who do you know that you can trust enough? Who do you know who has enough guts to withstand rope burn, watch blood drip from his hands, and still not let go? “Look around and ask, ‘Who can I trust to hold the rope?’ Who will let his hands bleed for me? If you can look at every member of your team and say they will hold the rope, then your team will win!” Source: “Called to Coach,” by Bobby Bowden

killed in a car crash at age 14 in 2004. In attendance were many of Teddy’s friends and family, including his parents, Rob and Patti Costa, and two grandmothers, Marcia Costa and Kay Mancini. The ceremony was held to thank everyone who helped raise more than $5,000 in just six months to build the scoreboard. On the scoreboard next to Teddy’s name are the words “Hold the Rope.” Patti Costa explained that the phrase was quoted at Teddy’s funeral, and that Teddy was someone who could be trusted to be positive and helpful. (See the box to the left for more.) “He was a champion to underdogs,” Patti Costa said in a later interview. “He would not allow people to be bullied. He would always step in and do the right things.” Costa said she planned to continue doing projects in her son’s honor, including helping children get the equipment they need to

ax Scherzer, voted the American League’s best pitcher in 2013, throws a 98 mph fastball and a nasty slider for the Washington Nationals. Adam Wainwright, a two-time World Series champion pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, features a curve ball that falls about a foot on its way to the plate. The two aces faced off a week ago in Viera, a typical Florida small town but for the fact that it’s home to the Washington Nationals’ spring training site. The game put Palm Coast baseball fans within 100 miles of a championship-caliber matchup, and, for this author at least, represented what living in Florida is all about. Eighty degrees and sunshine — i.e. shorts, sandals and sunscreen — in late March? Check. Tickets 50% cheaper than what you’d expect up north? Check. A traffic-free ride to Publix to pick up the world’s best chicken wings, plus buy-one-get-one Chips Ahoy? Perfect. To be sure, that half-off ticket only gets you in the door for a “discount” baseball game. You won’t really notice until the seventh inning or so, but the signs do get pretty unmistakable at that point. On Thursday, our group decided we’d had enough fun once “Batter No. 93” came out for an at-bat against “Pitcher No. 85.” The next day, when the Cardinals and Mets were tied at three after nine innings, the managers decided to stop playing; a day later, the Mets and Braves faced the same score, and chose to tack on a 10th inning. So yeah, things are different in the spring. But at other times it feels just like April, or even August, depending on the heat of the Florida sun that day. On Friday in Port St. Lucie, Mets phenom Noah Syndergaard struck out nine Cardinal batters in six innings, and frequently hit 97 and 98 mph on the radar gun with his fastball. And the team’s center fielder, Juan Lagares, was making major league-level defensive plays all weekend. If you haven’t been to a Grapefruit League game (the nickname for contests played in Florida in March), consider splurging on a $20 ticket. And if you have, tell us about your experience in a letter to the editor or on Facebook.

QUEST FOR CONSISTENCY

The Sparling brothers lead Matanzas High School’s drive to reach .500 on the baseball diamond.

BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

A

lthough Matanzas High School is struggling to find consistency and is only winning one out of every three games so far this season, Coach Jim Perry sees a bright future, thanks to his star outfielder, sophomore Bobby Sparling. Sparling, whom Perry says is the team’s MVP so far this year, leads the Pirates in most offensive categories, as of March 23. He has hit the team’s only home run, is batting 15-for-45 for a .333 average, and has seven doubles and 12 runs batted in. The only category in which Sparling isn’t leading the team is hits. That honor is held by his brother, Matt, who has 17 hits. Is there a friendly competition going on in the dugout for the team lead in hits? “There’s a lot of conversation about that, yessir,” Perry said. The two Sparlings exhibit brotherly love on the team. “They pick on each other,” Perry said, “but they also pick each other up.” For example, Perry continued, Matt Sparling had a tough performance on the mound in the second week of the season, and Bobby “was very positive with his words toward him, saying, ‘We’re going to be all right,’” Perry said. “They’re as classic a set of brothers as you could have.” The team’s quest for consistency has a deadline: The district tournament begins April 18.

Bobby Sparling is Matt’s younger brother, and they’re in a race to see who will lead the team in batting. As of March 23, Bobby was 15-for45, or .333, and Matt was 17-for-52, or .327.

Coach Jim Perry says one key to helping his team progress is to make sure the team is mentally tough. “We talk about it a lot,” he said. “When things happen and we see the bad body language, we don’t want to carry a bad at bat into the field on defense, or carry an error on defense into the dugout to the plate.” He said the team works on mental toughness by creating adversity during practice with a game called 21 Outs. Any error made during a 21-out period results in the entire team running from the leftfield foul pole to the right-field foul pole, to show that the whole time is impacted by any one player’s mistake.

THINGS YOU CAN DO IF YOU FIND AN ANIMAL

Jacque Estes

Buttons was an important member of our family and he stayed with us until he was almost 16 years old thanks to some very caring women.

n Check his collar

He was an escape artist and too smart for his own good. Usually when he got out, he would go a few blocks and then wait on a corner for me to come and pick him up. Once, while visiting relatives in Iowa farm country, he watched as people came in and out of the front door and upon figuring out the mechanics, dashed to the door, leapt up, hit the door lever and took off. But this time, he wasn’t so easy to find. I was frantic. I went back to work, still calling the humane society a couple of times a day. There were no microchips, but he had tags, and the inside of his leg was tattooed. Finally the call came from a local veterinarian who had called the humane society. Apparently the vet’s receptionist only read the first few numbers from the tag when the person at the humane society said, “Please tell us you’ve found Mrs. Estes’ dog.” Yes, I had been a regular caller. Two ladies took my dog to the

any years ago a bride in her 20s stood at the front door saying goodbye to her mother. She knew Buttons the fox terrier was behind her and she wanted to close the door. But mother had more to say and kept a firm grip on the open door. Then the inevitable happened. Buttons darted into the night. “He’ll come back,” my mom said. But he didn’t — not for several days. My husband and I searched for Buttons. I took the next day off from work, searched, called his vet, other vets, visited and called the local humane society and animal control.

vet. He had been attacked by some pack dogs that had killed other dogs in the neighborhood. He was in bad shape. They shouldn’t have picked up such an injured dog. They could have been hurt. The vet told them this. He also told them they had saved my pup’s life. I tell this story because there are many of you who are just as wonderful as these women. You don’t think twice about helping an animal that is lost or in distress. What you do next is what is important. While not all dogs and cats are being looked for, there are many that are. There’s a lot of confusion as to what shelters do with lost animals. I cringe when I hear someone say, “Don’t take it to the shelter; they will kill it.” This is not true. They want to find the animal’s owner, if possible, and, if not, find him a new home. Shelters are a first stop for anyone who has lost a dog, but if they don’t know you’ve found the animal, they can’t help.

for identification. n Take him to a local vet or the shelter to be scanned for a microchip. n Take him to the shelter or call the shelter and provide them with a photo, description of the animal and where it was found, and your phone number. n If no one claims the animal during the stray period then you can give him a loving home. If not, the shelter will look for one for you. n Put up “found signs” in your neighborhood or check social media. There are a couple of websites that are specifically for lost and found pet postings. little rain didn’t stop families from lining up outside City Hall for the annual Egg’stravaganza put on by the city of Palm Coast. Children had their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny. Some children were egg-static, others not so much. Although an egg hunt didn’t take place due to the rain, children didn’t leave empty-handed: Everyone got to take home a bag of candy and toy-filled Easter eggs.

The line wrapped around the sidewalk in front of City Hall.

PALM COAST PERMITS

he annual Flagler Beach Easter Egg Hunt drew several hundred people to the beach despite the rain. Colorful umbrellas, raincoats and smiles were the dress code of the day. More than 4,000 eggs were placed on the beach north of the Flagler Pier for three groups of children to “find” on Saturday, March 26. In less than an hour, all of the eggs had been gathered and added to Easter bags, baskets and buckets. Joseph Pozzuoli, architect and organizer of the beach Easter egg hunt for the past four years, told the crowd the event had more sponsors this year than in the past. – JACQUE ESTES

The following is an update for permit activity in the city for March 21-25. Total number of permits issued: 215. Since January 2009, $864,690,039 construction dollars have been invested in Palm Coast.

The best advice that Shaffer said he was given is “bigger is not always better.” He said he prefers a smaller, friendly business, rather than a corporate approach. Seventy agents aren’t necessarily better than the 13 he has at his office, he said.

Gail Christina Taft Wilson How does a daughter write an obituary for the mother that she cherished and called her best friend? With as much grace and poise and love and laughter that her mother would, that’s how. With the inner strength she taught me and with determination to keep a smile on my face no matter the circumstances, as difficult the pain and loss. This is just some of what I learned from my mother Gail Christina Taft Wilson in my 45 years before her unexpected passing this February the 14th, 2016 after arriving in the Cayman Islands to start a well-deserved vacation.

The last several years, Gail worked for Allen Deprey, DC in St. Augustine, FL where she had the privilege of working with her lifelong friend Jenny every day. The patients adored her and looked forward to seeing her on every visit, behind the desk, with her everlasting smile, always sincerely glad to see them. As her surviving children, Erik and I wish that her kindness and beauty come down and through and

February 19, 1947 – February 14, 2016

My mom was born in Evergreen Park, Illinois in February of 1947 to Astrid Irene Thon and Franklin John Taft who both preceded her in death. She married my father, Robert (Bob) Gordon Wilson on August 10, 1968 (deceased in 1997) and had two children; myself, Kelly Anne Wilson Moore (of Deland, Florida) in January of 1971 and my brother Erik Robert Wilson (of Palm Coast, Florida) in September of 1975. Gail graduated from Thornridge High School in Dolton, Illinois in 1965 and attended and graduated from the University of Chicago Medical Center from 1965-1969, simultaneously interning at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital, both in Chicago, Illinois. She went on to become an Electronmicroscopist for St. Luke’s Hospital, prior to the birth of her children. Gail and Bob (Retired Pipefitters Union Local 597, Chicago) relocated to Crystal Lake, Illinois in 1971 where they raised their family until moving to Florida in March 1990. Gail owned and operated the well-known family businesses of “Clownin’ Around” and “the Bridal Connection” in Palm Coast, Florida for more than 25 years before retiring in 2013. She was “THE” bridal coordinator in three counties and was the planner and decorator behind dozens of beautiful, successful weddings over the years. She was especially well known as “Flower the Clown” and “Mrs. Claus”, seeing the children of many local families grow from toddler to teen through the course of her business life. She filled the lives of many people with incredible joy and beauty through her work, all of whom she called friends and left a lasting impression on each of them in her special way and with a sparkle in her eye. Her spirit was undeniable and people would never forget her.

onto all of us who loved her. She was an incredible mother and friend, completely dedicated to the happiness of her children and grandchildren. She never stopped teaching and guiding and she most apparently never stopped loving us with all her being. We think she would say that her work here was done and she received a “call” of sorts, to journey to a reunion with the love of her life, her husband and partner Bob, her parents and all other family and friends that preceded her in death. And although she would be fearful of leaving her children and her grandchildren, Ashton Robert Wilson (15), Eric Samuel Charles Moore (15) and Cheyne Clair (21), she would know in the depths of her soul that she was the most amazing mom (because she reminded us all the time) and grandma (“Gow”) possible and she had raised us all in the best way; encouraging us to be unique, loving us un-conditionally and teaching us the joy in life. She always said “You should wake up every morning with the thought that something wonderful is going to happen.” She lives deep within our hearts now, forever with us, forever watching and guiding. I will forever see her face looking back at me in the mirror with comfort and I will always be so incredibly proud to be her daughter.
