PROPOSAL SUCCEEDS DESPITE HURRICANE The weekend Fleming Island resident Todd Harry chose to propose to his girlfriend of four years, Roxanne Iriarte, was Oct. 7-8, on a vacation in Hammock Beach. As the East Coast was evacuated, it was obvious that Friday was out of the question, but Saturday morning Harry suggested they drive down and see if they could at least stay one night. “I told her if we can’t get in we will turn around and come back,” Harry said. They arrived to find 10-15 National Guardsmen verifying two things: Do you have a license? And, do you have a need to be on the beachside? As Harry showed his license and a copy of his reservations, he whispered, “I am going to propose — please.” The couple was allowed through, but at the resort they were told the hotel was closed. Instead, staff helped out by bringing two chairs to the grass by the 18th hole, where Harry proposed. And she said yes. Finally, with the staff witnessing the event from inside, he proposed and she said, “Yes.”

YOUR TOWN GARDEN SPOILED Before Hurricane Matthew, the Hammock Community Association had a dedication ceremony scheduled for Oct. 20, at the Hammock Community Garden, on the community center property on Mala Compra Road. A butterfly garden in honor of Jane Culpepper, an Island Garden in honor of Alma Nemrava, and a tree in memory of Frank Meeker, had all been created by volunteers. The gardens were completely destroyed by the hurricane. The garden will be replanted. To donate, email joannecreuter@outlook.com.

on Mala Compra Road is closed, at least through the end of the year, until repairs can be made, following damage by Hurricane Matthew. While the center is structurally sound, it appears that flood waters reached as high as the chair rail inside the building. Also: The pickle ball courts were undamaged and open for use.

The decision not to evacuate Emergency help was not available after winds reached 45 mph. JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

Marge Rooyakkers heads up the security committee at Hammock Dunes. Her duty to the community was one of the reasons she decided to stay, when evacuation orders were issued. “It was very difficult making the decision whether to go or to stay,” Rooyakkers said. “On Thursday (Oct. 6), I met with a representative from the sheriff’s department, and Travis Houk, our Southern States property manager. The sheriff’s office was very clear about what they would, and would not do.” Probably one of the scariest things for anyone staying behind is the knowledge that, once the bridges over the Intracoastal are closed, there is no emergency service available. “When the winds get to a sustained 45 mph, they close the bridge,” Rooyakkers said. “Up to that point, they had sheriff deputies on both sides of the bridge.”

The guards normally posted at the gates to Hammock Dunes were sent home when the winds reached 40 mph, allowing them to get to their homes families, and for their personal safety. “We locked the gates open, because if we don’t, and the wind slams them shut, they are locked, and people can’t get out,” Rooyakkers said. “So for personal safety reasons, we lock the gates open, and they stay open.” On Saturday, residents discovered they had National Guard units at the cross streets by the front and back gates, checking licenses. “No one was supposed to come across the bridge, except for residents of the island,” Rooyakkers said. Rooyakkers had four friends and two dogs at her house waiting out the storm. She knows there are many residents who, for whatever reason, chose to stay. “I have stayed through three hurricanes; this was the fourth,” she said. “There were two groups (of people) that stayed: the new residents who wanted to experience the storm, and the group that has always stayed, and just were not leaving their homes.”

Those who stayed at Rooyakkers’ home sheltered in a hall or a room with hurricane-glassed windows. There wasn’t a lot of sleeping. Tired of watching trees “go inside out,” Rooyakkers took out a 1,000-piece puzzle for the group to work on. “I made breakfast for everyone, Marge and the minute we finished the Rooyakkers power went out,” she said. The power stayed out for the next three to four days. After the storm passed, Rooyakkers ventured out to discover all of the walkovers to the beach were either gone or damaged. The security office was notified, and caution tape was added to the entrances so no residents were taken by surprise. With the power out, the gates had to remain open, but Rooyakker said deputies were driving through the neighborhoods once the bridge was opened. “The sheriff’s department did a bang-up job,” she said. Of the four hurricanes she has stayed home for, she admits Matthew was the worst, “by far.” “If this ever happens again, even though I am the head of the security committee, I am not sure I am staying,” she said.

Turtle season comes to an abrupt halt Since the hurricane came late in the turtle nesting season, the number of nests lost was reduced. JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

When it was clear that Hurricane Matthew was going to batter the East Coast of Florida, Linda and Bob Jaeger headed to the beach — not for a stroll, or time in the surf and sun, but to check on turtle nests. Specifically, those that had passed the typical hatching time frame of about two months. If nests do not appear to have hatched 70 days after being laid, they are dug out and surveyed, one egg at a time. Typically, nests hatch between 50 and 60 days. “We pushed to make sure there were no 70-day nests left,” Bob Jaeger said. “Even before the storm, some of the clues that the hatchlings had crawled back to the sea were missing because of high tides we were having.” The Jaegers have been part of the Volusia/Flagler Turtle Patrol since 2009. They patrol the beach in their turtle patrol ATV from the beach south of Washington Oaks Gardens State Park to the Flagler by the Sea campground. In that approximate 10-mile span, 406 turtle nests were laid this season. Twelve were lost when Hurricane Matthew came through on Oct. 7. Bob Jaeger should know: He keeps the records. Since the beach has been closed, the couple has not attempted to go back. There’s really no reason;

Above: In a 10-mile span of beach monitored by Bob Jaeger, 406 turtle nests were laid this season. they know the nests were washed out. Bob Jaeger is a retired biology/ marine science teacher and has taken classes to the beach to study erosion. He knows that next season the changes in the coastline may require a little more human intervention, mainly moving vulnerable nests away from the tide line. “We didn’t have to do that much this year, but we may have to next year,” he said. A KEMP’S RIDLEY SIGHTING?

One highlight of the season was in August when a resident told the couple she had taken photos of a mother turtle laying a nest the afternoon before. Most turtles lay their nests at night, unless it is an extremely rare Kemp’s ridley. Kemp’s ridley turtles are generally found in the Gulf of Mexico and north of the East Coast and are the only sea turtles that routinely lay their nests during the day. Prior to this sighting, there has only been one Kemp’s ridley documented as having laid a nest on the Flagler coastline, and that was in 2012, according to the turtle patrol records. Jaeger said DNA tests were being conducted to confirm the species, but the photos look like it was a Kemp’s ridley.

Switching from electric saws to electric guitars Local restaurant provides some musical relief from storm devastation.

JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

The strum of guitars, the beat of the drums, and the occasional wail of a harmonica, went down as smoothly as the wine, as people took a night off from hurricane horrors, at the Hammock Wine and Cheese Shop on Thursday, Oct. 13. “It’s a reset night,” Carol Mathis, owner of the Hammock Wine and Cheese Shop, said as the restaurant patio began to fill with music and people. “It’s time to reset your mind and emotions and come together as a village.” Mathis estimated about 70 people attended the event, and it was the first of many Thursday night jam sessions for Rob Peck at the restaurant. Ken Yarborough approached Mathis about having a special jam session at the restaurant on State Road A1A after Hurricane Matthew destroyed the Matanzas Innlet Restaurant, where they normally play on Thursday nights.

“We have a beloved friend, Rob Peck, who suffered a devastating loss in the hurricane, and that’s all I am going to say about that,” Yarborough said. “It was a crazy idea, to move it down the road and give everybody a reason to smile for a few hours.” The devastation was the loss of Peck’s home in St. Augustine, and many of his musical appearances, due to restaurants, like the Matanzas Innlet, which were also lost or closed because of damage. “The hurricane hit and I … umm … I lost my house.” The words didn’t come out of Peck’s mouth as easily as the songs later that night. “What happened at Matanzas Innlet, this is what sort of evolved, an incredible jam session of all-star musicians. That’s what we are recreating here tonight.” Peck, originally from Gainesville, worked out of Nashville as a sideman for George Jones and others, before returning to Gainesville to “settle down.” In 1999, he moved to St. Augustine and began playing up and down

the East Coast of Florida. “Many months ago, Rob started playing a weekly gig at the Matanzas Innlet Restaurant,” Yarborough said. “Something happened along the way, and musicians started showing up on Thursdays and sat in and jammed with him. He’s gracious and lets them; a lot of musicians won’t let other guys come up. It evolved into this weekly jam that would pack the restaurant.” “You would never know who was going to show up, Alabama, Stella Parton — Dolly’s little sister,” Peck said. Will Lopez was one of those who began sitting in the Inn-

He’s a beautiful guy.” Peck and friends, musicians who preferred to take the Traveling Wilburys approach to identification, giving names like “Chevy” and “Ford” and “Porsche,” did bring some smiles, on and off stage. “I want to thank everybody for coming out,” Peck said. “It’s all my friends, and they’re very supportive, and it’s very much appreciated.”
