WELCOME THE LA ART SHOW has refined its focus to bring a freshly curated fair for its 21st edition. The LA Art Show team is constantly driven to present a magnificent art experience that brings together galleries, artists, curators, and collectors. The art fair world is expanding and we are proud to have emerged as one of the world’s largest and longest running events with 190,000 square feet of exhibition space and close to 60,000 attendees this past year. As Los Angeles takes its place as a vanguard of the global art scene, our ability to adapt and evolve to meet the art market’s current trends is vital. While dedicated to maintaining our commitment to technique and integrity we are refining our curatorial vision and presenting galleries that showcase premier Modern and Contemporary work at our 2016 edition. WELCOME TO THE 21ST ANNUAL LA ART SHOW OR AS WE ARE SAYING 20 +1!
Every year, I extend a heartfelt thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for the LA Art Show, but this year I do so with increased vigor. For twenty + 1 years it has been our team’s goal to gather and present great art for the people of Los Angeles and its visitors. You have responded by returning for two decades to collect, share, and revel in your passion for the arts. As we enter year one of our third decade, we do so in a thriving downtown arts community, surrounded by internationally celebrated museums, galleries, and artists. We have taken this opportunity to change the fair’s direction --to refine our curatorial scope and concentrate on galleries that show contemporary and modern work. To continue our commitment to historic and traditional contemporary genres, we have created a sister show, the Los Angeles Fine Art Show which takes place concurrently and next door in Hall B. Live Video and Sound Mixing by Ben Jones and special guests. Ben Jones was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1977 and lives and works in Los Angeles. He holds a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art. In November of 2012, Jones had a seminal exhibition titled “The Video,” which was held at MOCA LA. A founding member of the multimedia collective Paper Rad, Jones helped pioneer the intersection of digital media, the Internet, and art-making.

Melanie Pullen will be creating a stage where she will be reenacting a series of historic crime scenes as part of her series “High Fashion Crime Scenes,” which engages issues of glamorized violence against women. Photographer and performance artist Melanie Pullen was born in New York City in 1975. She first began staging performances as a young child. Pullen is most noted for creating artworks engaging the issue of violence, particularly violence against women.

The Catch “The Ocean is a bowl that catches a river that falls from the sky” The Metabolic Studio Sonic Division has repurposed an industrial ruin into a musical instrument. The silo’s song can be added to by sound played elsewhere—like this performance at the art fair. We offer this performance as a prelude to Bending the River Back into the City, an infrastructure monument which will pick up water from the LA River by a waterwheel, cleanse it with sound and reconnect it to the floodplain. MILLIE BROWN PERFORMANCE CURATED BY ACE GALLERY
Surrounded by a carpet of flowers cut freshly on the opening day of the the LA Art Show, Brown will lay in complete isolation immersing herself in a meditative state where she will focus on the beauty of the external decomposition around her, and the evolving changes within. Further heightening the performance, Brown will abstain from the basic necessity of food, surviving solely on water for the entire 5 days of the performance. Withstanding the physical discomfort and inevitably entering into an altered mental state, Brown will use this fast to enable herself to explore the depths the mind can reach once physical comforts and limitations have been removed. Millie Brown is a British performance artist, currently living and working Los Angeles. She was born in 1986 and is a founding member of London’s !WOWOW! collective. Brown is internationally recognized for her performances engaging the body as a vessel for artistic creation.

The LA Art Show in conjunction with Littletopia is proud to announce the first ever Artist Lifetime Achievement award honoring Robert Williams. Robert almost single handedly created a new art movement (originally called LowBrow) that is now seeing huge influence in almost every strata of the art world. The Littletopia section of the LA Art Show may not even exist if it wasn’t for Williams’ dogged determination to change how contemporary art was perceived. He did this by taking a notion of what new art could be like and setting himself up as a model of success for the many other like minded artist to follow. In his writings like the “Rubberneck Manifesto” (from Williams’ book Visual Addiction), and his paintings like “The Land of Retinal Delights” he squared of with Duchamp himself, asserting that the idea is not everything and that a complex concept executed in a skillful and beautiful painting might actually be better than just an idea and might be the future of art. A quick 20+ year survey bears this out with important publications and major Museum shows from MOCA to MoMA validating his importance. His idea to start Juxtapoz Art Magazine (now the largest selling art magazine in the world) may eclipse his importance as a painter with its untold influence over the past 20 years. Now bigger and stronger than ever, the sky is really the limit for this new movement in the next 20 years. With all this drive and dedication it is only fitting that Robert Williams is recognized for his great contributions to creating a bigger better art world for all of us to enjoy.

For nearly three decades, Chinese artists have been tirelessly exploring new thoughts, ideas, and languages in contemporary art. They have gone from creating visual representations of the balance being struck between China’s development and its impact on the natural environment, to depicting how contemporary artists live and how their minds have changed with a more independent approach. This profound shift in their creative focus is grabbing the attention of the international art community. Indeed, mindfulness of artists’ existence and an awareness of the environment are the defining features of contemporary art, to the extent that if art fails to bring out human emotion, it is not worthy of the title “contemporary”, be it Chinese or Western. Democracy and liberalness are the mainstream of global art. For this year’s LA ART SHOW, we will be presenting works by up-and-coming young artists active in China’s contemporary art scene, based on the theme “Emotions and Sentiments: Vision of Chinese Contemporary Art” at the National Exhibition of China. Participating artists include Chen Xidan, Huang Weian, Lv Cun, Liang Gang, Lu Yunhua, Shen Chunxia, Si Yuan, Tang Yunhui and Yu Liming, who have made their names in China, and independent artists Boun, Hu Yong, Justin Y and Tony Song, first-timers to the event who are based abroad. In their works, they give a visual representation of their sentiments and emotions, using their individual means of expression and unique artistic language. Some of their works will debut, as part of the highlights at the exhibition. The exhibition intends to reveal the psyche of China’s contemporary artists and the interaction with their surroundings. Etymologically, the word “emotion” describes something in motion; it is a reflection of how individuals interact with their environments and how these interactions sustain or change. Sentiments, on the other hand, denote how individuals feel about the social consequences of those interactions, so sentiments cover both senses that are closely related to emotions and feelings born of experiences. The participating artists have drawn inspiration from the most trivial and mostly overlooked everyday objects, their favorite things and fleeting but nuanced moments, through which they express, vent and divert emotion. Using varied means of expression – metaphorical, part factual and part fictional, or downright abstract, they display the unique aesthetics and rich expression deep in their hearts. The audience will see in their creations how East meets West, their enduring mental strengths, and the mark they have left on contemporary art. Abstract art is not about randomly drawn lines; only solid drawing skills allow it to be a vehicle for free artistic expression.

She started her career as a painter in her middle age and has since achieved great success. After years of hard work, she is now the creator of hundreds of oil paintings and prints. TRANSITION OF INHERITANCE “INHERITANCE” IS AN OLD SUBJECT, WHILE “TRANSITION” IS A NEW EXPRESSION.
In Chinese, “transition” has various meanings; the most common is wading in the water. Crossing a river from one bank to the other can also be known as “transition.” However, “transition” emphasizes the procedure, rather than the result. There are an infinite number of ways one can cross a river. Each approach can be unique. The same principles are applied to the field of art. The theme for the exhibition is “transition of inheritance.” The theme focuses on respect and dependence on inheritance, with connection to tradition. The phrase stresses creation on the basis of tradition, but also pays attention to the rules of how it is created. Transition focuses on the progressive development instead of immediate accomplishment. Inheritance is a river of history and culture; “transition” would be the ripples. The ripples are a mark of transition. “Transition of inheritance” also means: to inherit and transit the river of time. The contemporary outcome is created by use of traditional skills. The evolution of Chinese civilization has manifested an integration of meanings of inheritance, continuation, and creation. Creation of China’s contemporary art is composed of both local cultural tradition as well as Western. The artists need to learn from the ideology of Western contemporary art, but also reflect upon their artistic traditions and values. Artists should guide new contemporary art by utilizing different values, methodology, and cultural logic on the basis of respecting, researching and understanding the tradition. In light of this, we emphasize the affirmation of the basic cultural position “inheritance” and the acknowledgement of the art’s “transition” of the era. Through the “Charm of Ink and Wash” and “Gorgeous Intangible Cultural Heritage,” we aspire to surpass the boundaries between fine art, folk and religious art. YIN YI BORN IN SHANDONG, 1954. CONTEMPORARY ARTIST. DIRECTOR OF ART SCIENCE CENTER AT CHINA ART SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE. “Silver Tide”, the 8th National Art Exhibition of China “Call of Life”, the 9th National Art Exhibition of China, won the Excellence Award Has held solo exhibitions in Jinan and Beijing in China, Los Angeles and Philadelphia in US, Leipzig in Germany. Has attended group exhibitions in Jinan, Yantai, Qingdao in China and in Japan and Mexico. Yin Yi’s art style could be summarized as unique, elegant and varied. His artworks made people think about the German artist Gerhard Richter, for his painting keeps changing all the time. He tries to maintain the internal relations of classic Chinese ink and wash painting while tending to keep other artists at a distance. Yin Yi began his research through material, technique, quality and realistic, freehand and abstract effect. After a long period of tough study, he formed his personal art language and style, which can be seen in his painting series such as snow land, mountain, field, stone in the water, vegetation and mist.Yin Yi has drew lessons from Chinese traditional painting and Western artists, but he still keeps a distance with them to maintain his independence. He tries to seek a new, personal and various ink and wash world with an international point of view. SELF REFLEXION A PERFORMANCE BY YANA CLARK CURATED BY MARISA CAICHIOLO
Yana Clark (1984) grew up in an ecovillage in an natural preservation area in Brazil, experiencing art in all aspects of her life. She received her Bachelors in Fine Art in 2011 at the University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Yana’s life-long pursuit of impossibilities, resolving and integrating mutually exclusive polarities: viewer and viewed; exhibitionism and anonymity; ultimately, the simultaneous perception of personal minutia and an all-encompassing “everything.” Her most recent work, Self RefleXion (2010), most directly addresses these dichotomies, its shape-shifting array of micro-mirrors constantly pursuing the integration of everything, literally and figuratively reflecting our existence as fragmented perceptions and experiences. Self RefleXion, is an interactiv e living sculpture from the series Body of Light. Viewers, initially mesmerized by the human form as a glittering compositions of light are rewarded for their closer examination with thousands of fragmented selfreflections. The frontiers of the time, space, body and mind are investigated with the mirrored body. In an interactive pas de deux, every movement of the performer and viewer expresses a point along an infinite continuum of possible images and realities, forging a surreal self portrait through the body of another, inviting viewers to experience existential and interpersonal questions: I see you... The international art world has recently been expressing a growing interest in Dansaekhwa (Korean monochrome painting). The third Gwangju Biennale in 2000 was a historic occasion for the history of Dansaekhwa, as Korean monochrome painting and Mono-ha, both of which emerged almost simultaneously in Korea and Japan between the late 1960s and the mid-1970s, were presented together in an exhibition, entitled “The Facets of Korean and Japanese Contemporary Art.” Over ten years later, in 2012, not only was the term ‘Dansaekhwa’ introduced to an international artistic vocabulary, but Korean monochrome painting became a staple art form at home and abroad from the exhibition, “Dansaekhwa: Korean Monochrome Painting,” at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea. In the course of the next three years, Dansaekhwa garnered an international

recognition that resulted in its presentation at a collateral event at the 2015 Venice Biennale. A most recent exhibition at Christie’s in New York, “Forming Nature: Dansaekhwa Korean Abstract Art,” further solidified Dansaekhwa’s standing in the global art scene. Through featured articles in international magazines such as ‘Frieze’, ‘ArtAsiaPacific’, and ‘ARTCO,’ Dansaekhwa gained additional traction in an even larger art community. Acquisitions of Dansaekhwa by prestigious institutions, including Museum of Modern Art in New York, are a testament to a substantial enthusiasm for Korean monochrome painting.

Characterized by a collective conscious, tactility and performativity, Dansaekhwa presents an abiding spirit of Korea as the “Land of the Morning Calm� in abstract fashion where tradition, history, and culture are disintegrated on a flat surface. Because of such distinct foundation from which Korean monochrome painting rises, it lies outside the artistic orbit of Western minimalism. Through repetitive movements the first-generation Dansaekhwa painters presented on canvas the material properties of oil paint or hanji (traditional Korean paper). They envisioned imbuing the painted surfaces with a spiritual value through a repetitive performance of dabbing, painting lines, or removing paint from a canvas and then refilling it.

Such creative practices that lie at the core of Dansaekhwa since the early 1970s has culminated to a global recognition for distinguished aestheticism of Korean monochrome painting. At the LA Art Show, representative works of Kim Hyung Dae, Lee Seung Jio, Yoo Byeong Hoon, as well as Young-il Ahn, who have individually established their oeuvre since the eighties, will be presented in a special exhibition, entitled “Dansaekhwa II: The Traces of Four Artists.”

Giving continuance to my idea of creating beauty with waste, I scavenge upon my remembrance of art. The great Renaissance artists, the timeless classics that caught my attention and forever occupied a space in my memory and therefor provided inspiration throughout my life. The museum in which we met for the first time, the space, the moment in my life. These notions have mingled for decades in my mind. It is now, in my new body of work, where I invite you to be a part of my discernment of Art. Henry Fuseli and Diego Velázquez are amongst the Masters I have selected to reinterpret. The XVIV, XVII and XVIII centuries are my muses. Within the space I will construct, also in cardboard, an unfinished interior and exterior of a XVII century structure. My photographs will hang opposed to a small photograph of the original inspiration. For the opening night a life model dressed in Renaissance fashion made entirely out of recyctled paper material will inhabit this space. Throughout the remaining time of the installation the model will be replaced by a mannequin.

DO ART FOUNDATION The Do Art Foundation is an art organization focused on the curating of artistic works in the public realm by developing projects that revitalize both physical and social landscapes, creating convivial experiences and catalyzing cultural exchanges. Do Art introduces artist Jana Cruder, showcasing her newest work as both performance and installation. Cruder’s “Way of the Modern Man” represents an investigation into the sociological, physiological, and consciousness-adaptive experience of how we live now. It is an artistic interpretation of an anthropological study assessing the latter side of the bell curve in man’s physiological evolution observing the emotional and physiological changes that have occurred in conjunction with the advent of the smartphone. With spines bending toward the will of these devices, our inherent social inclination has engendered an addiction to a truncated, facile mode of communication favored in the forms of text, image and Emoji. Determined to document this shift in our human interactions and posture, she installed a conceptual and formal structure – both a physical space and a conduit for exploring the contrast between the projected and observed self. In this isolation/observation booth each participant spends about 30 minutes in a private session with the artist.

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES ART WALK Dear Attendee, The Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk is excited to participate in the 2016 LA Art Show. As one of the best known art events in Los Angeles, the Downtown Art Walk attracts over 12,000 attendees to the Historic Core on the 2nd Thursday of each month for an evening filled with art, culture, and performances. Since 2004, Art Walk has remained the premier self-guided public art phenomenon in Downtown Los Angeles, bringing together art lovers, community members, and repeat visitors who collect art, dine, and shop at local businesses. During the 2015 year, we celebrated the artwork of over 200 artists, guided more than 900 art lovers on numerous gallery and mural tours, had our first short film festival, and worked with and promoted over 40 local galleries. The Art Walk continues to take an active role in International programs as well, including Vision Fest LA, IAA-UNESCO’s World Art Day and International Women’s Day. The Downtown Art Walk is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization with a dedicated team whose mission is to promote the visual arts and culture in Downtown Los Angeles, not only on 2nd Thursdays, but all year round through programming, collaborations, and cultural initiatives such as the Kinder Walk, Historic Core Mural Tours, Gallery Tours, and local events such as Night on Broadway. Dear Friends and Colleagues, I’d like to tell you our Fine Art Dealers Association story. It all started with a single phone call. When Bill Karges called his longtime friend, George Stern, in 1990 saying he wanted to start an association of premiere art dealers in Southern California, FADA was born. The original founding eight members focused on two goals: building recognition for their collegial not-for-profit organization of art dealers, and putting on the most important art show west of the Mississippi. This year FADA celebrates its 26th year as a respected association of established art dealers located in cities all over the US –— some with additional locations abroad. This trusted gallery network is dedicated to promoting the highest degree of professionalism, scholarship and integrity and to offering quality works of art whose authenticity is carefully researched. Our prestigious LA Art Show evolved over 17 productions to the LA Convention Center in 2009 with 125 exhibiting galleries, 40,000 visitors, and many special features. A few years ago we passed the torch to The Palm Beach Show Group and, to this day, we continue to support our legacy with great pride. Promoting scholarship has always been a FADA priority. Continuing in that tradition, this year we begin a collaboration with Independent Curators International (ICI) supporting a replication of admired collector Gertrude Stein’s Salon de Fleurus to travel to venues around the world. SALON DE FLEURUS Salon de Fleurus is an educational institution dedicated to assembling, preserving, and exhibiting memories on early modern art. A simulacra of Gertrude Stein’s Parisian salon, it is a project that displays and references a story of modern art’s beginnings through collecting and exhibiting, and through the social history of the salon itself. The Salon de Fleurus questions where, why and how certain narratives of modern art originated through the structure that first canonized them. Its permanent installation was located at 41 Spring Street, New York, and was open to the public from 1992–2013. Now, under the auspices of Independent Curators International (ICI) the Salon de Fleurus will travel around the world to continue to question the ways we remember and make sense of art history. Salon de Fleurus is a traveling exhibition organized by Salon de Fleurus and Independent Curators International (ICI), New York. TRAVELLERS IN TIME: THE FRAGILITY OF THE HISTORICAL MEMORY AND POLITICAL POWERS ACCLAIMED SPANISH ARTIST LLUIS BARBA PRESENTED BY THE CYNTHIA CORBETT GALLERY
Lluís Barba’s monumental photographs depict contemporary society using the same iconography as historical masterpieces. Each of his works is comprised of an ‘underpainting’ overlaid with contemporary visual references creating a symbolism and frame of reference that invite the viewer to navigate between the historical and ever changing contemporary celebrity driven landscape we live in. This unique exhibition will include the West-Coast exclusive viewing of the artist’ seminal work —a reimagining of Picasso’s ‘Guernica’— and this will be the first time this work will be shown in Los Angeles following The Artist’s Solo Museum Show ‘Travels In Time’ At The Fundacio Vila Casas, Barcelona. In Barba’s Guernica, 2014 he uses as a backdrop the Picasso painting made in response to the 1937 bombing of Guernica. A series of cultural portals in the photographic collage invite you to roam and consume. The journey begins in the foreground as a mass of collaged children’s faces, displaced from various sites of conflict, carpet the ground. Everywhere there is threat, but also hope: a tank is covered with flowers; a rainbow shoots towards an agonised woman; Angelina Jolie is an emissary of peace; and Yoda from Star Wars floats above the scene, a wise and powerful force. Barba will also reveal a new work commissioned by LA Art Show. This special project is presented by Cynthia Corbett Gallery during the LA Art Show, January 27-31, 2016. The artist will also present a rare lecture on Saturday, January 30th at 2pm titled Travellers in Time: The Fragility of the Historical Memory and Political Powers

DAYS OF FUTURE PAST EXHIBITION SHOWCASES ARTIST MARI KIM’S ANIME-INSPIRED PORTRAITS PRESENTED BY SM FINE ART GALLERY
At one time, Korean women enjoyed an almost equivalent status to men in society. That changed over the course of the Chosun Dynasty, when Confucianism gained momentum. During this period women were primarily relegated to the home. Days of Future Past, curated by Simon Kwon, Director of SM Fine Art Gallery, examines the changing gender roles in Korea, and spotlights a new generation that is empowering youth and changing culture. With the rise of Confucianism, Korea saw a resurgence in traditional gender roles and social hierarchy. Korean women were dissuaded from artistic expression. However, since the Korean War, society has changed dramatically. “The new generation of Koreans is free to pursue their dreams regardless of gender. Mari Kim is a product of this new environment for younger generations. Her work has been influential in Korea and has been steadily growing an international following. In a country where it was taboo for women to be expressive, she is now a major influence on popular culture.,” states Simon Kwon, curator of Days of Future Past. Days of Future Past is a special solo show of Mari Kim’s artwork. Heavily informed by her training in animation, Mari Kim incorporates bright colors and bold lines to create simplified and idealized figures. Most of her works depict young women and many include fairy tale or other popular characters.

MOLAA, in partnership with Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG) and the Richardson Center for Global Engagement, sent five Los Angeles artists to the Taller Experimental de Gráfica in Havana, Cuba in October 2015 for a one week printmaking exchange—the first of its kind. Los Angeles artists include: Margaret ‘Quica’ Alarcón, Rogelio Gutierrez, Dalila Paola Mendez, Delilah Montoya, Erin Miyo Stevens, and Ernesto Yerena. FROM THE STREETS TO CANVAS Most people agree that quality public art is desirable. But after the unveiling and the party, art in public spaces can take on a life of its own. Economics, cultural history, and changing neighborhoods are among the factors that move public art past the original intent of the artist. This exhibit, along with “MCLA’s Mural Renaissance in DTLA: Challenges of Expression and Legacy,” a discussion of the economics and preservation of public art moderated by Isabel Rojas-Williams, will showcase the historical and cultural evolution of some of Los Angeles’ notable and changing pieces of art displayed in public. Embracing LA’s visual art culture, this exhibit will include, among others, Carlos Almaraz, Christopher Brand, Espi, Ignacio Gomez, Willie Herrón III, Steve Martinez, MEAR ONE, Art Mortimer, Gilbert Ortiz, Frank Romero, Shizu Saldamando, Evan Skrederstu, and John Valadez. Live painting will be by UGLARworks (Unified Group of Ltos Angeles Residents) led by pioneer muralist Willie Herrón III. The exhibition, inspired by LA’s mural culture, will connect the street and the canvas. Curated by Isabel Rojas-Williams Executive Director Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles (MCLA). Virtues & Vice examines the distinct paths created by All the Girls Love Earl, Jennifer Korsen, Amanda Marie, Restitution Press, Septerhed, Anna Taratiel & Thrashbird, and the opportunities that they have created to thrive in the crowded landscape that is contemporary street art. Curated by G. James Daichendt, Virtues and Vice looks at the commercialization of street art since it started to gain popularity and prominence in art and pop-culture.
