Note from the Producing Artistic Director Welcome to the world premiere of Christopher-Demos Brown’s timely and thought-provoking The Cancellation of Lauren Fein. As you know, this is a play about cancel culture. We’re all aware of the term, but if asked to define it, I suspect there would be no consensus on what, exactly, it means. When Pew Research Center published a study about Americans and cancel culture in 2021, respondents were divided into two camps: 49% believed it “describes actions people take to hold others accountable,” while 42% viewed it negatively, with comments such as “censorship of speech or history,” “mean-spirited actions taken to cause others harm,” and “people canceling anyone they disagree with.” Incidents of cancel culture these past several years suggest that there is merit to both schools of thought: it can be about righting a wrong, and it can also be about stifling speech. Powerful men who, for years, had gotten away with sexually abusing subordinates were finally held to account, losing their lofty positions and sometimes their freedom. On the other hand, in 2020, a White professor at USC was suspended for using a Mandarin word in class that sounded like a familiar racial slur in English. In 2021, world-renowned composer Bright Sheng, the Leonard Bernstein Distinguished University Professor at the University of Michigan, was forced to give up his class after screening the 1965 film version of Othello, with Laurence Olivier in blackface, and failing to provide any context. Students refused to accept his letter of apology. Both men were subsequently reinstated. I offer these two examples because Chris set his play in the world of academia, and Lauren Fein, like those real-life professors, sees her life begin to unravel due to misunderstandings and a failure to communicate. This is not uncommon on college campuses; there is a Cancel Culture Database, where you’ll find that since 2015, 370 professors have been targeted for their comments. I dare say that, regardless of which side of the aisle you’re on, you’ll likely find some of those cancellations were well-earned. But so many were not. That’s true in all walks of life. There has been some extremely egregious behavior and, yes, speech that has been called to account and resulted in severe consequences for the perpetrator thanks to cancel culture. But there are multitudes of people who have said something inelegant, and the recipient(s) took offense or even misheard the word or words and immediately pounced. It’s a “gotcha” moment; rather than challenge the statement, or ask for clarification or explanation, they bring their grievance to social media, which fans the flames. And a person is shunned, or a career is in tatters. In today’s world, there are many who prefer assumptions to actualities, disagreement to discussion, fighting to forgiving. Thanks to social media campaigns, the accused rarely stand a chance. This is the environment Chris introduces us to in The Cancellation of Lauren Fein. Like Jenny Connell Davis did with The Messenger, our previous world premiere, Chris compels us to contemplate where we’re headed as a society. 4 palmbeachdramaworks.org

WHY I GIVE

“Theatre to think about,” PBD’s tagline, is what attracted me. The plays deliver on this. I appreciate the quality, variety, and depth of the performances. The combination of a small venue and unusual plays makes PBD a true gem. Further, the educational programs and performances at schools are so valuable. It is rewarding to see my contributions in action on the stage and in the community.

Theatre To Think About

2023/24 SEASON DEATH OF A SALESMAN By Arthur Miller

March 29 - April 14, 2024 This Pulitzer Prize-winning, trailblazing play changed American theatre in the person of its everyman tragic hero, Willy Loman, a dime a dozen, disappointed, disillusioned, and delusional traveling salesman with a skewed vision of the American Dream. All he wanted, the playwright wrote in his memoir, was “to count.” Or as Willy’s wife, Linda, implores, “Attention must be paid.” Executive Producers

Toni and Martin Sosnoff

Producers

Ruth Baum, Nancy Goodes, Sandra and Bernie Meyer

TRYING

By Joanna McClelland Glass

May 24 - June 9, 2024 In 1967, feisty Sarah Schorr, a 25-year-old from rural Canada, goes to work as secretary for 81-year-old Francis Biddle, the patrician former US attorney general. The brilliant Biddle is now frail, sometimes befuddled, and always irascible. Inspired by the playwright’s experiences as Biddle’s secretary, the piece is a tender yet unsentimental portrait of two disparate people navigating their vast differences to form a bond of mutual admiration, consideration, and respect. Executive Producers

Stephen Brown and Jamie Stern
