Becoming data-driven
has made a conscious decision to focus on developing solutions specifically for energy and industrial risk and crisis management.
The time to respond to pipeline emergencies is shrinking What can start out as a potential threat to a pipeline’s security can quickly escalate into an emergency where lives, the environment, and company reputations can all be at risk. How an organisation responds in those first crucial minutes and hours of an incident can determine the outcome.
As part of their wider digitalisation journey, organisations have begun to introduce digital elements to their emergency response. Now, a new generation of technology is making it easier for companies to manage any emergency they are faced with by providing a single hub of trusted information.
The latest digital tool to be added to Restrata’s suite of safety, security and incident management software solutions, Restrata Platform, is a cloud-enabled SaaS (Software as a Service) technology, called Restrata Platform Incident & Crisis Manager. This sits alongside the Last Mile and Global Ops product. The ICM software enables industrial organisations to go fully digital with their emergency response capabilities – instantly giving responders the information they need to make critical decisions. It collates incident and crisis management data into a single platform – synchronising critical information such as people impacted, personnel on board (PoB),

helicopter and asset locations, tasks, team briefings, and media response and much more, into easy-to-use dashboards.
When every second counts during an emergency, having the right information, at the right time, in front of the right people is critical. This latest addition to Restrata’s sectorleading digital solution ensures that companies can stay at the forefront of emergency response and crisis management, taking them one step closer to achieving connected resilience and further reducing fragmentation.
The path to digitising pipeline risk management With so many aspects and potential barriers to greater adoption of digital tools, it can be challenging for HSE, security and digital leaders to gain investment in modern risk management solutions.
Key considerations when deciding on whether to digitalise include:
Understanding what data dark spots exist Most pipeline companies rely on a wide and disparate range of often conflicting data sources to build a picture of the risks across their enterprises. Not only is it time-consuming to manage these multiple information feeds, but it often results in a fragmented and incomplete picture. Digital solutions enable companies to synchronise data feeds into a single dashboard of verified data, providing a complete picture where threats can quickly be identified.
Assessing incident readiness By placing data at the heart of day-to-day operations, potential threats can be mitigated and planned for. If an incident does occur, onsite personnel are able to quickly alter their remote emergency response team which has the right information in a single platform to effectively manage the response and escalate it to a crisis team if required. Through remote devices, the team knows the exact geolocation to send medical, evacuation, or other security support to; environmental damage is mitigated; and reputational fallout addressed.
Sourcing the right risk intelligence approach to meet specific needs It is common for companies to implement the risk and security solutions provided by their insurance broker, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing and responding to threats. Today, technology provides an agnostic solution to risk intelligence, ensuring companies can find the right solution – and technology partner – for their specific operational and regional challenges.
Making the case for safety, security and resilience software in the boardroom One of the main barriers to increased digitalisation is cost. High upfront costs for something that a company hopes it will never have to really put to the test can struggle to gain support in the boardroom. Yet, when the cost to industry in the US alone as a result of incidents totalled almost US$340 million in 2020, despite a slump in production level, and topped US$2 billion in 2018, the associated risks of not taking action to reduce risks make the argument more compelling.
De-risking pipeline security in Iraq Restrata worked with pipeline owner Kurdistan Pipeline Company to undertake a full risk and security review of the Kurdistan-Iraq Export Pipeline to Turkey. The pipeline runs 300 km from Erbil to Fishkabour on the Turkish border through a variety of environments.
Following a full survey along the entire length of the pipeline including the control base, pumping station, substations, and personnel requirements, Restrata developed a concept design to optimise security. This included installing acoustic sensors along the pipeline, redesigning aspects of the control centre and control base and implementing new processes to keep workers safe.
Since then, Restrata has worked with the group to ensure all emergency response processes and procedures are in place and will be looking at how data feeds spanning personnel, pipeline data, and wider geographical threats were collated via the technology firm’s Restrata Platform which can give relevant managers and teams throughout the organisation a real-time oversight of risks and threats along the pipeline and enabled them to respond effectively to potential incidents.
How Restrata Platform works Restrata Platform is a cloud-hosted SaaS platform that generates and collates data sources across operational activity to provide an accurate real-time oversight. It features three core products: ) Restrata Platform Last Mile manages any operational environment which requires heightened procedures to minimise and manage risk. The Last Mile could be a single site, an entire country, region or global. This eradicates blind spots, solidifies standard operating procedures, and delivers end-to-end visibility and ensures duty of care. Using Restrata terminal apps, RTLS,
GPS and/or integrations with existing systems companies creates a unified view of workforce safety and asset security.
) Restrata Platform Incident & Crisis Manager delivers faster and more informed incident resolution by bringing all critical incident data and tools together on one easy to use, powerful platform. The entire team has a connected view of the unfolding situation and highest priorities, saving time and driving confident decision making.
) Restrata Platform Global Ops provides a regional or global view of a company’s Last Mile operations, plus any assets or people in between, whether travelling or lone workers. This enables an enterprise to have a truly global overview, while having the ability to drill down to the detail whenever needed.
