Turkish reception was great SALAHUDDIN HAIDER

I

T was really great. Tall, lanky and handsome Turkish Consul General, Murat Mustafa Onart, stood at the gates to personally greet guests coming to join him in celebration for the 90th anniversary of the proclamation of Turkey. The evening, the atmosphere at his Defence Society residence, offered a delightful touch to those present. An aura of romance. The vast lawns were dimly lit, and the hospitality was traditional. The turn out was impres-

sive indeed, as practically the entire diplomatic corp had showed up, from USA consul general Michael Dodman to Didier Boschung of Switzerland, French consul general Christian, Bahreini consul general Ibrahim Hejazi, Oman counterpart, attired in suit as usual, the Thai and the Korean consul generals, the Chinese consul general Ma You, and his vice consul Yin, the Russian consul general Oleg. Both Russian and the Chinese heads of missions are relatively new but they are pleasing personalities and quickly win over friends with their disarming smiles and friendly handshakes. They are true representatives of their respective countries. Mr Onart himself is a delightful person, extremely cour-

teous, and pleasant to talk to. He and the Sindh adviser Sharmila Farooqi, who was chief guest from Sindh government side, spoke highly of the traditional and fraternal ties that bind the two countries. Turkey has been in the forefront of supporting Pakistan, and in recent years this relationship has touch new heights. The Japanese consul general Aouchi talked with a touch of sadness about the recent natural disaster in his country. He said he had asked the Pakistani authorities if they needed any assistance for relief to the earthquake victims of Balochistan. No reply yet. However he felt that the Japanese economy, in melt down for considerable time, has begun to pick up again, thanks to the policies pursued by the

new Liberal Democratic Party, whose leader, the prime minister, had brought stability to Japan, which is a happy augury for a great country in the Far East. Kuwait and UAE are yet to send their replacements for Sohail and Muttairi, the two popular diplomats in Karachi who are now on new assignments since past few months. Muttairi perhaps has been made ambassador in Bosnia. The previous Russian consul general Andrey Demidov is now on vacation at home. Among the businessmen and entrepreneur were the newly elected President of the Karachi Chambers of Commerce and Industry Amir Abdullah Zaki, a brilliant young man, very social and highly efficient in his

work, Yaqoob Tabani, chairman of the Tabani group of companies, Dr Zulfiqar Ali Shalwani, secretary information to government of Sindh. A charming personality, Maria Paola of Family Educational Services Foundation, the Director of the Human Resources and Administration of Engro Foods, Kanwer Anwar Saeed, former vice president of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Khalid Tawab, Byram Avari, the eminent hotelier of Pakistan and also honoray consul for Canada in Karachi, with his lovely wife, Goshpi. The food was sumptuous and thoroughly enjoyable. It reflected Turkish hospitality.
