protection to the poor and marginalized segments of the society. “It is serving the vulnerable people by providing them healthcare and education, irrespective of religion, age, gender, caste, creed or political affiliation,” he remarked. He further said that PBM was also working on initiatives for women empowerment adding that the education of women and children would lead to their prosperity. To a querry he said that Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal provided medical treatment facility to 3,000 patients during last year adding poor and deserving cancer patients of the country were also being provided financial assistance. Managing Director said that general public should generously donate blood to PBM’s Thalassemia Center so that maximum number of children could be provided free of charge treatment.—APP

LHC admits Ayyan Ali’s acquittal plea for hearing

RAWALPINDI—Once again the Customs court could not frame charges against supermodel Ayyan Ali 15th time on Thursday in the money laundering case and adjourned the hearing till November 19. Ayyan failed to appear before the Customs court judge, Rana Aftab Ahmed, where she was to be indicted after her acquittal plea was dismissed. The counsel of Ayyan filed a plea before the court that her client was sick, therefore, she must be exempted from appearance. The medical certificate of the accused was presented on the court orders. On this, the judge remarked that the doctor who has issued this certificate belongs to Karachi and it will be difficult to summon him if needed. The court ordered Ayyan to appear on the next hearing and adjourned the hearing till November 19. Meanwhile, on behalf of Ayyan, a plea has been filed in the Customs court for return of supermodel’s passport. It is prayed that Ayan is to go abroad on important visit, therefore, the passport should be returned. On the other hand Ayyan Ali on Thursday filed an acquittal plea in Lahore High Court (LHC) a week after the special customs court hearing the money laundering case against her had rejected a similar petition.—INP

Adhocism ruining National Saving Directorate

Court moved for appointment of permanent Director General ZUBAIR QURESHI ISLAMABAD—Central Directorate of National Saving (CDNS) an institution of national importance is without a permanent DG and it seems the federal government has other more important things to do than filling the vacant seat. At present the institution is working on adhoc basis and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Finance has been given additional charge of the CDNS. A etitioner Saeed Khan resident of Peshawar on Thursday moved the IHC challenging the appointment of an official of the Ministry of Finance as caretaker DG of the CDNS since January 26, 2015. The caretaker charge can be assigned only for a period of three months with three months extendable but the respondent has been occupying the post for almost one year and despite the fact that the post is of grade-21 while Mr Waqar Ahmed (the Acting DG) is a grade 20 officer. The petitioner has nominated federation of Pakistan through secretary ministry of finance, secretary establishment, finance minister Ishaq Dar and joint secretary ministry of

finance Waqar Ahmed having additional charge as Director General CDNS as respondents. Justice Athar Minallah of the IHC while hearing in the petition issued notices to the respondents and sought their comments within fortnight. The petitioner told the court that at present, the CDNS was operating with a network of 429 offices, comprising 12 Regional Directorate, 16 National Saving Treasures, 378 National Saving Centers, one Directorate of Inspection and Accounts, seven Zonal Inspection and Accounts Offices, 12 Regional Account Offices and two Training Institutes. That CDNS is responsible for mobilization of domestic saving through sale of various government securities called National Saving Schemes (NSSs). Such a large institution is operating without any permanent DG for the last one year. The federal government last year advertised the post of DG CDNS and received 53 applications. Further short listing was done for interview but then the government committee in its meeting announced that no suitable candidate was found from all over Pakistan even though 53 people applied and some of them were shortlisted but not shown in the minutes of the meeting, petitioner says.

AIOU develops liaison with industrial sector to share latest research ISLAMABAD —Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has formally set up a separate office of Research, innovation and commercialization (ORIC) to maintain liaison with industrial sector to share latest research in the relevant fields. The office will work as a bridge between the researchers and the end user for the application of latest knowledge (new innovation) in a particularly field, said Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui while inaugurating the ORIC. The society should get the benefit of research findings, being carried out in the educational institutions, he added.

He noted that Higher Education Commission has allocated a huge fund for the research work and now it is the duty of the Universities to ensure its proper use and disseminate their research findings among the end users and the policy-makers for the socioeconomic development of the country. The present day’s repaid socio-economic progress world-over is the result of continuous research and development of new ideas and innovations in the manufacturing sector, he added. activities, by publishing research journals and holding seminar and conferences on the relevant topics. A special incentives package has also been given for this purpose. Prof. Dr. Nowshad Khan, Head of ORIC said on the occasion that a core-group will be set up to evaluate the research findings and to pass on the credible one to relevant sector. The ORIC will try to meet the demand of a particular industrial sector as well, equipping them with latest knowledge and development in a particular field. The manufacturing groups may also contact them for their research-based needs, he added.—INP
