So-ok Civic Center Project Description: Considering the current Covid-19 situation, we weren’t allowed to take off our masks and are in need to remain socially distant. The after scene of this situation is what we hope to see the most. So-ok civic center aims to encourage people to interact with each other with the programs and space provided to bring out liveliness within people. With the analysis of Thai paintings and elements as inspirations, we sought to create bondage within the community and produce spaces that capture the scene of people being able to interact with each other once again. We want to form an atmosphere that allows people to spread their liveliness around, not to restrict them in one place. To express this idea, the design uses organic forms, curvatures, of the kanok pattern, which was inspired by nature and developed throughout Thai history. The curvatures of each line in our design give a sense of freedom and symbolizes how people from different places meet each other at the endpoint like the kanok pattern, which can increase the interaction of people as we designed the space to be seen on all sides. The So-ok civic center is a mid-rise building that provides a civic activity plaza and green space on most floors for people to initiate conversations and interact with the space in a bustling atmosphere. These spaces allow users to take their time off technology and gather in the middle of the busy city. The civic center is also linked to the skywalk that connects to the airport link for the busy people to spend their time more in the civic center. Not only does our building have green space, but the landscape is also designed for users to enjoy the greenery and recollect the memories in the past where people would gather near the water source or under the bodhi tree for different activities. So-ok civic center will bring the opportunities for people to interact with each other and the green spaces that will further impact the physical and mental health of people in a positive direction. It will also balance the busy life of people to make users slow down, take their time off and experience community life.

Uniquely Thai
“Uniquely Thai” is an idea that would express the spirit, culture, and traditions of Thai people. In So-ok civic center, kanok pattern was the inspiration of our design. The kanok, which is the Thai pattern that are respected by Thai people and often used in sculptures, wall paintings, and ornaments of architecture. It is an important Thai value and property that developed throughout history. We define the form of the building by using the process of creating kanok sam tua. The repetition of stacking pattern creates the dynamic movement within the building that allows the users to feel a welcoming and lively atmosphere by utilizing this center. In addition, the rich culture of Thai best expresses the uniqueness of itself. The ancient Thai paintings with very detailed elements of Thai people’s daily life of the past like the lively atmosphere of markets near the rivers. Even in architecture, the ornaments and carvings that are used on walls, roofs, and columns all symbolises Thai culture and their beliefs. With the analysis of Thai paintings used as an inspiration, we evaluate the spaces and programs to adapt into our design. The space we define as uniquely Thai mostly appear in the exterior space that provides the most social interaction in the community that would further improve the relationship between people. The interior also provides the opportunities for social bonding with the help of each programs and circulations.

The programs are designed to respond to the design concept of the civic center by expressing the atmosphere we analyzed in the Thai paintings where people gather around the water source or under the bodhi tree for market, leisure, and other activities. Through this lively atmosphere, the programs are arranged in a way that people can get the most social interaction, such as the outdoor space and landscape that provides spaces for people to utilize.

Programming Inspirations & Analysis of Thai Paintings We choose painting to explore Thainess from the lively atmosphere and daily routine of people from the past. They used boat as transportation and business . The activities are executed near the water source. People also gather under the trees and trade products which show social interaction in the community. The vegetation and biodiversity are plentiful and allow people to get close with nature. With our analysis of the paintings, we aim to create a lively atmosphere for both outdoor space, indoor space, and landscape to provide the opportunity for people to interact with each other.
-Floating market -Traveling and business by boat -Flow of water -Activities beside water source -waterfront pavilion
-Offering monks food -Stair that connect to elevated platform
-Pavilion -Do activities at Chan -Stair that connect to elevated platform

Design Concept The design aims to encourage people to interact with each other with the programs and space provided as to bring out liveliness within people. Through the analysis of the paintings and some Thai elements, the space captures the daily routine of Thai people in the past. The atmosphere it brings doesn’t restrict the liveliness of people within a box.So, the design uses organic forms which is inspired from the curvature that comes from the kanok pattern. The kanok pattern which was the initial design that developed throughout ancient Thai history, and can be seen in different places, such as walls, sculpture, temple doors, etc. It is inspired from nature and developed throughout history, which then became more valuable as Thai property. The curvatures of each lines gives a sense of freedom and symbolizes how people from different places meet each other at the end point like kanok pattern, which can increase the familiarity of people as we designed the space to be seen in all sides. The design concept answers the programmatic requirements by taking considerations about users circumstances of each programs and possible sceneries that might occur to form a pathway that leads us to our design concept, social interaction. Especially, the civic activity plaza and green roof that acts as an gathering point where people from all over will meet and interact like the concept of kanok pattern.
Conceptual Diagrams
Begin from rectangular shape, then split into triangle. Curves are then added to touch the points and sides of rectangles.
Curves are extracted from the rectangle to separate into different sections.

The programs are organized in different zone and level by categorizing them into private or public and taking considerations of the time of each programs. The organization of program reflects the site analysis (environmental factors) and other analysis by providing different access for people that uses different transportation, arrange programs that can see greens, programs that are used for gathering and perform activities. Depending on these analysis and factors, we placed the programs that would make the users comfortable and accessible.

The site plan responds to our site analysis by designing landscapes that would fit the site surroundings, such as the accessibilities, the green areas and the atmosphere we aim to create. Our landscape design concept is integrating the form of kanok and use the curvatures that goes along with the civic center. The landscape design relates to the design of the civic center or our design concept through the curvatures used to connect the building with the surroundings. The landscape design consist of pedestrian paths that connects to the interior of the civic center, the outdoor parking area, greens, water source, and drop off area. The curved skywalk provides access for users from airport link into the civic center from the second floor. The green roof and water source, inspired from the Thai paintings analysis, increase the lively atmosphere around the civic center. The materials we used in our landscape design are concrete for the pathways, bitumen for car park area, and vegetations surrounding the area.

We used reflective glass because it’s a durable material that has solar control energy that has the qualities of being energy efficient, and heatproof. It also provides a wider view for the users to take a look outside to make them feel more comfortable while staying inside the center. Reflective glass is an excellent green material, it is commonly utilized to construct green structures. It has a mirrored effect, reflecting heat or UV rays away from the surface and assisting in the maintenance of a cool temperature within buildings. It is important in improving indoor environment, and when used properly, it may also help with energy efficiency. Excellent daylighting will make better health and well-being of the people.

The structural system of the civic center uses loadbearing wall and shear wall. The materials used are steel and concrete. Steel bars are placed inside the precast concrete for more stability. Concrete are used because it provides the lowest carbon footprint, it’s durable, maximizes energy efficiency via thermal mass, and low maintenance costs.
