Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

I was about 18 years old when I started taking short courses on makeup during summer breaks. That is when I discovered my real passion, hence decided to pursue it professionally.

What was your “aha!” moment?

Discovering the art of makeup was when it all began and then finally starting my own salon/bridal studio in Karachi was the ‘AHA!’ moment in my life.

It doesn't seem as easy as it looks like.

Pakistan’s leading actress, Mahira Khan, has been winning hearts through not just her immense talent but also her philanthropic work. As a brand ambassador for Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Khan visited Facebook and Google’s headquarters in California and held talks there to increase awareness and raise funds for the cancer institute.

Hailing from Lahore, the stargazer Dr. Tayyaba Zafar became the first Pakistani female to be selected for an Antarctic research trip under the Homeward Bound Program. The program works to enhance the impact of female global leaders and specialists in technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dr.Zafar has a PhD in Astronomy and she has been selected among 80 women belonging to 26 different countries, being the only one to be selected from Pakistan.

Aside from being a well-reputed singer and talented actor, Meesha Shafi has been one of the few Pakistanis in the industry to speak out against the misogyny that prevails within our society. In 2018, Shafi initiated the #MeToo movement, helping to give other women the chance to speak out about their experiences with sexual harassment, for which she gained immense support from women in the UN.

Pakistan’s first and only female international MMA Champion, Anita Karim has been making waves in 2019 as she bags her second international win in Singapore at the One Warrior Series against Indonesia’s Gita Suharsono. Fighting out of Islamabad’s Fight Fortress MMA Gym, Karim won two gold medals in 2018 at the Pakistan Grappling Challenge. In spite of the sport being heavily male-dominated, Karim is breaking these stereotypes! More power to you girl.

A former Pakistani national cricket team player, Marina Iqbal is the first female cricket commentator from the country.

In 2018, Iqbal played her final one-day international against New Zealand and she then proceeded to improve on her language skills, making her commentary debut during the Pakistan-Australia women’s cricket series held in Malaysia.

Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy won the 2018 Eliasson Global Leadership Prize for her extraordinary, courageous leadership. The activist and filmmaker is the first Pakistani to win the prestigious award given by the Tällberg Foundation in New York. The award recognizes Chinoy’s brilliant work in telling stories that hope to spark conversations and bring about a positive change in the world.

The youngest Nobel Laureate, Malala Yousafzai, has always been lauded for her advocacy for female education as well as for her efforts to fight for female rights the world over. In 2018, Harvard University selected Yousafzai for its Gleitsman Award in recognition of her tireless work in promoting education for young girls.

The Gleitsman Award provides US $125,000 for activism that has improved quality of life around the world.

Pakistani politician Krishna Kumari was featured in BBC’s 100 Women List of 2018, which comprises of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world. Kumari has been a member of the Senate of Pakistan since March 2018, and is the first Hindu Dalit woman, and the second Hindu woman to hold this position. She is known for her campaigns for women's rights and her works against bonded labour.

TEAM PAPERAZZI HEADED OVER TO KARACHI’S FIRST FUNCTIONAL TRAINING GYM. FUNCTIONAL TRAINING ATTEMPTS TO ADAPT OR DEVELOP EXERCISES THAT ALLOW INDIVIDUALS TO PERFORM THE ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIFE MORE EASILY AND WITHOUT INJURIES. WE WERE THOROUGHLY IMPRESSED BY THE FACILITIES AVAILABLE HERE ESPECIALLY ALL THE EQUIPMENT WHICH HAS ALL BEEN LOCALLY MANUFACTURED IN PAKISTAN BY FITNESS INC. What is functional training? How does it compare to other styles of training such as CrossFit or bodybuilding?

Usman: The literal definition of functional training has to do with the kind of exercises or movements that replicate your daily life movements such as squats, lunges, presses etc.

Functional training is an all rounded fitness approach that targets different aspects of fitness at the same time such as strength, endurance, speed, stamina, and flexibility. The nature of exercises being done mostly revolve

around compound exercises – these exercises utilize multiple muscle groups so it teaches your muscles how to work together. Functional training makes you more functional – not just inside the gym but also outside while doing your daily activities. There is a lot of focus on sports and also performance as compared to bodybuilding therefore this kind of training caters to all ages from students to aged people.

Kamran: In compound movements, multiple muscles are being used.

Compound exercises make you more athletic. Bodybuilders target an isolated muscle group, and are therefore not that athletic. Compound moves target maximum muscles in minimum time.

How is your upcoming program Combat 59 different from other boot camps?

Usman: Combat 59 is basically an innovative group training system that combines functional training, circuit training, and high intensity training. In other boot camps or classes, what happens is that

an individual is using their own bodyweight to do the exercises, or they use very minimal equipment.

Kamran: In Combat 59 we would have a different workout program everyday. One day we might do high intensity workout, the next day strength training and the other day CrossFit, so it’s about everything for which we would utilize the entire gym space and use all the equipment.

What sets you apart from other gyms?

Usman: First of all is our philosophy of purely focusing on training that makes one perform better inside and outside the gym. Secondly, the equipment that we have inside our gym; you cannot do ineffective exercises on it. Most of the equipment revolves around doing exercises that will push you and will make you feel like you have worked hard. Our equipment is such that you can do all sorts of training here; from Bodybuilding to Cardio to Functional, and even CrossFit to Mixed Martial Arts etc.

Kamran: As I said before, we have different patterns and workout plans, our exercises are very different and we make sure the exercises target different muscles rather than isolating them. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a part of functional training and interval means time so you have a target in that.
