Thi s project i s loca ted i n Brooklyn, New York. We focused on the conceptual possibi li ti es of the si te, i nsti tution and bui ldi ng technology. The center of fi ction i nclud ed a library, readi ng rooms, educa tion, a udi toriu ms, as well as wri ters’s resid ency. The structure of the building is created using the structure of a narrative.

For thi s 2 week i ntense d esign charrette, stud ents li ved i n the Falli ngwa ter exi sti ng guest house and worked to d esign an adj acent 3 season space and 4 mi ni mal 3-season sleepi n g ca bi ns. My group was i nspired by the id ea of bei ng one wi th na ture when you are on such a si te. We reori ented the si te d esign of the exi sti ng house i n ord er to focus on the context.

The si te plan conti nues the exi sti ng tree li ne and frames the vi ews of the valley. The plan crea tes a good sepera tion of pri va te vs publi c area as well as congrega tional nod es. Thi s si te plan redirects the ori enta tion of the exi sti ng house to the pa th tha t leads to the Falli ngwa ter house.

“Extension of the hand� I d esigned thi s mallet wi th the i ntention of respecti ng the na tural grai n and function of a mallet. I chose to keep the bottom sid e of the mallet orthagonal i n response to the shapi ng of our arm. The much contrasti ng curvi li near sid e was widled to fi t the way one holds the mallet, taki ng i n consid era tion different types of use. I spent 6 weeks a broad d esigni ng and bui ldi ng a teacher’s cottag e for two adu l ts i ncorpora ti ng pri va te space for each i ndi vidual and a common area. We worked wi th the cheifs of the vi llag e, our cli ents, duri ng our d esign process to specify exactly wha t they wou ld like bui l t. We spent 4 weeks bui ldi ng thi s home wi th help from masons i n the vi llag e. Our fi nal outcome was a bea utifu lly crafted cottag e wi th a breezeway and a slanted roof for their i ntense cli ma te, and functional li vi ng qua ters for the teachers.
