Letter from Co-founder and Executive Director
Dear Friends, Since our last community report, the world has changed. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed even our most ordinary interactions—and has affected people of color disproportionately. The killing of George Floyd illustrated painfully and clearly the systemic racism in our society. To confront the racial disparities that have long plagued our state and our nation requires hard, focused work. At the Page Education Foundation, we remain hopeful. We have seen our efforts to close the racial achievement gap in education make a real difference. The current and former Page Scholars featured in this annual report illustrate the talent, resilience and integrity of the 7,500 young people we have helped and supported since 1988. The strength they’ve shown as they overcome challenges and barriers to their success offers us reason for optimism. If these students are our future, then the future is bright. Thank you for your continued support of the Page Education Foundation and your commitment to creating hope through education and service. Your generosity is an essential investment in our community. We can’t do the important work we do without you. Sincerely,
Alan Page Amanda Moua Co-founder Executive Director

IN MEMORY OF DIANE SIMS PAGE Diane grew up in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, and attended Robbinsdale High School and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. After graduation, Diane worked with Pillsbury for five years, then as an account executive for BBDO Advertising for a year. She transitioned to focus group moderation and became an expert in qualitative market research. Focus group moderation was in its infancy at the time, and Diane was a leader in developing many of the procedures used in focus group moderation today. She created her own company, Leapfrog Associates, to generate product ideas for large companies, including Pillsbury and General Mills.
5
Diane and Alan first met in the lobby of General Mills, a chance few moments that led to a lifetime partnership. She had been doing volunteer work with the Boys’ Club; when she was introduced to the well-known Minnesota Viking, she asked if he would be willing to help. Diane and Alan married in 1973. Their marriage reflected not only their deep and enduring love for each other, but also a shared commitment to social justice. Together, during Alan’s 1988 induction into the NFL Hall of Fame, Diane and Alan created the Page Education Foundation. For 30 years, Diane served as the volunteer Executive Director and worked tirelessly to expand the organization’s mission and reach. If Alan was the face of the Page Education Foundation, Diane was its heart and soul. Diane’s
huge heart and her warmth made everyone around her feel better than they might otherwise have. She made personal connections with donors, staff, volunteers and, most importantly, with Page Scholars past and present. Lomumba Ismail, is just one of many former Page Scholars who credits his passion for teaching and helping others with the positive relationship he and Diane shared over the years. Diane was a visionary who led the growth of the organization’s annual gala from a small and humble gathering in a local restaurant to an event with nearly 1,000 guests each year that raises a quarter of the organization’s annual budget. In 2012, in celebration of the Page Education Foundation’s 25th anniversary, she encouraged Alan and their daughter, Kamie Page, to write a children’s book, “Alan and His Perfectly Pointy Impossibly
Perpendicular Pinky.” The project was a success—and 100 percent of the book sale proceeds went to the Page Education Foundation. Alan and Kamie have collaborated on three more award-winning children’s books since then. Diane Sims Page died September 29, 2018 after a lengthy battle with cancer. The Diane Page Legacy Fund was established in her memory; to date, over $300,000 has been raised in the DPLF to continue Diane’s work and legacy.
In 2020, the Page Education Foundation’s board members agreed to rename the organization “The Page Education Foundation founded by Diane and Alan Page,” doing business as the, Page Education Foundation, in order to more directly recognize Diane’s crucial role in starting and growing the foundation. The name change will occur later this year.
6
“When we met, it didn’t occur to me that 47 years later, we would have an organization of people volunteering, serving others, making life better—or, I should say, creating hope for those who maybe don’t have any hope. I couldn’t have dreamed of it then but, in retrospect, I should have expected nothing less. She was an incredible woman, an incredible mother and an incredible wife. She is no longer with us, but her spirit lives on.” – Alan Page
7
OUR BEGINNING
8
In 1988, Diane and Alan Page created the Page Education Foundation to encourage Minnesota students of color to pursue post-secondary education. Recognizing a need for our education system to reach more young people of color, the Pages used Alan’s induction into the NFL Hall of Fame to launch the organization. From its inception, the Page Education Foundation has offered financial assistance to students of color facing barriers to attaining their educational dreams. In turn, these young leaders return to their communities to serve as tutors and role models for elementary and junior high school students.
9
In its first year, the Foundation awarded Page Grants for post-secondary education to 10 Page Scholars. Thirtythree years later, almost $16 million in Page Grants has been awarded to more than 7,700 Page Scholars. Our Page Scholars have given nearly 500,000 hours of volunteer service to communities across Minnesota, impacting the lives of over 50,000 children. Alan, with a public and successful career as a professional football player and then as a Minnesota Supreme Court Justice, was and is the face of the Page Education Foundation, but Diane was its heart and soul. She made the important personal connections with donors, staff and volunteers and, most of all, with Page Scholars past and present. She and Alan were always completely in sync about the goals and activities of the foundation (he once said, “We were so close that sometimes it was hard to know where I stopped and she began.”) but it was her warmth, commitment and attention to detail that made those goals come to life. If she wasn’t on the phone with a potential donor, she was organizing a group of volunteers to read applications or helping a Page Scholar connect with a possible job opportunity.
Diane died of cancer on September 29, 2018. As was typical of her personality and her commitment to the mission of the Foundation, she worked tirelessly on Foundation efforts until the day of her death.
Today, guided and inspired by Diane’s vision and commitment to creating opportunities—and hope— for Minnesota students of color, Alan and the Page Education Foundation continue her work.
10
OUR PRESENT Social justice, economic justice and racial justice are part of the DNA of the Page Education Foundation. Recent events have dramatically shown that Minnesota is still struggling to confront the racial disparities that have long plagued our state. We acknowledge that although the Page Education Foundation has been providing access to educational opportunities for over 30 years, there is still much work to be done.
11
The lack of educational opportunties for students of color is a national problem, but the gap is particularly glaring in Minnesota. African American, Hispanic, South East Asian and American Indian students are not performing at the same academic level as their affluent white peers. The “2019 State of Our Students” report from the Minnesota Department of Education showed that only 34 percent of African American students are reading at grade level, compared with 67 percent of white students. Similarly, 34 percent of African American students are doing math at grade level, compared with 63 percent of white students.
Minnesota high school students of color continue to graduate at a lower rate than their white peers and, for the 25 percent of Minnesota students of color who pursue post-secondary education, fewer than half will graduate with a bachelor’s degree after six years. Providing educational opportunities for Minnesota students of color beyond high school not only helps students to achieve their career goals, it helps address systemic inequities that have lasted for too many decades and that adversely impact the economic growth and prosperity of our state for all residents.
12
PAGE GRANT PROGRAM Page Grants provide educational opportunities for all students. Our grants work on a model of community reciprocity: recipients called, “Page Scholars”, receive annual, renewable scholarships to offset the cost of their post-secondary education and commit to educational service projects directed at kindergarten to eighth-grade children across Minnesota.

YONIS EGAL Page Grant Program Fourth-year Page Scholar, majoring in political science and nonprofit management at Hamline University in St. Paul.
15
YONIS EGAL followed in the footsteps of his older sister, who was also a Page Scholar. He knew he was going to go to college, but worried about the financial burden it would bring for his family. In his first semester of college, Yonis, who identifies as an introvert, felt disconnected. He didn’t know anyone on campus. Being an athlete and part of Hamline’s soccer team helped him make new friends and stay in school. Yonis believes that a positive culture and a strong network of support can help colleges retain students of color. He now has a support network that includes his coach, mentors and other Page Scholars on campus who keep him accountable for his studies and volunteer commitments. Yonis hopes that when he graduates, he will be able to help other youths succeed academically by building out extracurricular programs that emphasize community connections.
“E very year, college gets more and more expensive; it’s become inaccessible for low-income students, especially those from the inner cities. The Page Grant helps to make college significantly more affordable.”

ISELA CERESO MENDIOLA’S family immigrated to the United States from Mexico 20 years ago, settling in Bloomington, Minnesota where she was born. Isela’s parents instilled the values of perseverance, justice and empathy in her and her younger sister, Irlanda, values that Isela continues to follow. Her goal after graduation is to become a licensed social worker so she can help immigrant families like her own. In high school, Isela regularly volunteered in a thirdgrade classroom at her former school Valley View Elementary. When she was introduced to the Page Grant during her senior year, she saw that her values aligned with the Page Education Foundation’s pay-it-forward requirement.
Isela’s journey as a Page Scholar has not only helped her pay for college, it has also encouraged her parents and younger sister to become more involved in her college experience and the education community in Bloomington Public Schools.

CHUECHENG YANG Page Connections Program Page Scholar Alum, Graduate, University of St. Thomas, with a degree in business administration, focusing on leadership and management, and a minor in communications and journalism.
24
CHUECHENG YANG, the oldest of four children, was raised in Blaine, Minnesota. His parents valued education and encouraged him to attend college and apply for a Page Grant. He was initially hesitant about volunteering with children because he didn’t know what a recent high school graduate like himself could offer them.

One of the first Page Scholars to take part in the Page Connections Accelerate program, Chuecheng stepped outside of his comfort zone to learn about career opportunities with the first Accelerate partner, Thomson Reuters. No one in his family works for a large company and he wanted to learn about real corporate life. With other Page Scholars, Chuecheng attended workshops hosted by Thomson Reuters employees and toured the corporate campus in Eagan. That experience helped him learn more about himself and the leadership skills he wanted to refine while in college.
“ When you are young you don’t realize how much influence you can have as a person. Volunteering with children made me realize that my actions matter. Regardless of whether I think I am role model or not, the children I tutor look up to me. I can choose to be a positive role model in their lives.”
25
“ Justice Alan Page is a great leader and role model because he isn’t just an accomplished athlete and judge; he uses his successes in life to help others. I want to lead like Alan Page, using my accomplishments to lift up others in the community.” –Chuecheng Yang

ROXANNE TUCKER Page Scholar Alumna Page Scholar for more than 10 years, earning a bachelor’s degree in social science and psychology, two master’s degree in human services and criminal justice and information systems and technology management with a specialization in information assurance and security. Today, she works in information technology and is the founder of ART IT Solutions, LLC.
ROXANNE TUCKER grew up in the Rondo neighborhood of Saint Paul. Both her parents were raised in the south but moved to Minnesota before she was born. Roxanne’s parents’ professions reflected their strong belief in public service: her father was a police officer and her mother an educator with the Saint Paul Public Schools. Her close-knit family made it a tradition to come together every Sunday for dinner. In 1992, Roxanne received a Page Grant to help her cover the cost of college tuition. For the service to children program, she volunteered with various elementary and middle schools— as well as a boxing club. Nearly half of Page Scholars are pursuing studies in STEM, but currently, Black women account for less than 3 percent of professionals in the field. More than once, Roxanne has experienced being the only woman of color in an IT department. The business model for the company she founded includes internship opportunities for women of color in STEM to help address this disparity.
“ Alan and Diane Page fought to aid students of color like me to further our education. I was able to complete my education and now I have an opportunity to further the Page legacy by helping other young women of color pursue a career in STEM.”

Alan releases 3rd children’s book: Grandpa Alan’s Sugar Shack Alan Page and his daughter, Kamie Page, collaborated on a third book for children. Grandpa Alan’s Sugar Shack is a gentle story of a granddaughter discovering one of the great joys of her grandfather’s youth, spring in the north woods when maple trees are bursting with sap. The story invites children and adults to join in building memories together. Proceeds from each of Alan and Kamie’s books for children supported the Page Education Foundation in fiscal year 2018 and 2019.
Testify: Americana from Slavery to Today
Alan Page receives The Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Testify is an exhibit of art and artifacts from the Diane and Alan Page Collection that reframes conversations about racial justice, serving as a reminder of our history. The exhibit ran from January 8 to February 6, 2018 at the Cargill Hall Gallery in the Minneapolis Central Library. Guests also learned about the efforts of the Page Education Foundation to close the racial achievement gap in Minnesota.
Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded by the President of the United States to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the security or national interests of America, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Cofounder of the Page Education Foundation, Alan Page, was awarded the honor in November 2018.
Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton declares November 14, 2018, as Diane Sims Page Day. Nearly 100 current and former Page Scholars gathered at the University of St. Thomas to honor the life and legacy of Diane Sims Page, cofounder of the Page Education Foundation, who passed away in September 2018. On behalf of former Governor Mark Dayton, Page Scholar Alum and Assistant Chief of Staff of Scheduling, Merone Melekin, presented the proclamation to Justice Page.

New Executive Director, Amanda Moua
Celebrating Justice Page Middle School and Junior Page Scholars
In October 2018, Amanda Moua, former Program Manager and Administrative Director of the Page Education Foundation, was named the new Executive Director. Amanda had the honor of working for nearly ten years alongside her mentor and the co-founder of the organization, Diane Sims Page. Amanda leads the foundation in continuing its mission-driven work and building relationships in the community to bring educational equity to Minnesota’s students of color.
The school on 50th and Nicollet in Minneapolis long known as Ramsey was renamed Justice Page Middle School following a student-led campaign in 2017. In collaboration with former principle, Erin Rathke, and artteacher, Elissa Cedarleaf Dahl, the Page Education Foundation launched the Junior Page Scholars program. Modeled after the foundation’s service to children program, Junior Page Scholars explore college and career opportunities and volunteer with elementary age children.
Service to Children Program and Outreach Coordinator The Page Education Foundation created a new program coordinator position to support Page Scholars in the Service to Children program and enhanced outreach to Greater Minnesota.
Page Connections – Accelerate
Diane Page Legacy Fund
In 2018, the Page Education Foundation launched Accelerate a subprogram of Page Connections. Through Accelerate, businesses sponsor Page Scholars, who take part in workshops, field trips, and mentoring. These interactions allow Page Scholars to learn about the culture and people of a company/business they are interested in, so they can assess whether the Accelerate partner would be a good postgraduation employment fit. At the end of the academic year, an Accelerate partner may offer a summer internship to the Scholar. When the student graduates, they may join the Accelerate partner on a full-time basis. Accelerate has grown from 10 Page Scholars in the first year to nearly 100 Page Scholars who participate in various corporate campus events, activities and paid internships with multiple corporate partners.
For 30 years, Diane Sims Page, cofounder of the Page Education Foundation worked tirelessly to expand the mission and reach of the organization. If Alan was the face of the Foundation, Diane was its heart and soul. Diane passed away on September 29, 2018. The Diane Page Legacy Fund was established in her memory. To date, over $300,000 has been raised to continue her life-long work.
