Freedom to publish is a cornerstone of democracy and vital to human expression and growth. Publishing enables voices to be heard, discussions to occur, paradigms to shift and understanding to develop. “Could we ever know each other in the slightest without the arts?” asks Gabrielle Roy on our twenty dollar bill. Creations are meant to be shared, and it is through many voices that our tapestry takes shape and our understanding grows. When published, words and images are honed and polished; there is opportunity for review and editing, for choice and order, for persuasion and reflection. PageMaster understands this call of giving voice, creating space and facilitating open dialogue. The realities of small producers are not congruent with the economics of big box stores and the traditional publishing model. By providing a range of services tailored to the needs of independent publishers, small press, and independent book sellers, PageMaster assists the independents in having a voice in the marketplace, remaining competitive and bolstering the huge diversity of ideas essential to our great nation’s freedom and growth. PageMaster believes that “It takes a whole village to raise a child,” and that “Until everyone has a voice at the table, no one is free.” The image of many voices empowered to speak clearly was the vision when PageMaster was created in 1996 by Dale Youngman, and it remains our mission today. The incorporation of distribution services makes PageMaster a one-stop publication machine – from conception and printing to distribution and order fulfillment of independently published material around the world. Whether you are a first-time author, a seasoned pro, an artist, or a small press, PageMaster has your back every step of the way. ¾¾ OUR MISSION PageMaster provides a full range of publication services blending art, craftsmanship and technology to design, produce and distribute effective graphic communications that challenge thinking, change perceptions, create understanding and build community. We are tooled to provide ecologically sound and effective support to artists, authors, publishers and organizations through our small batch model. ¾¾ DISTRIBUTION SERVICES PageMaster distributes independently published works to trade, library, academic and speciality markets. PageMaster also sells direct retail through shoppagemaster.ca, our Amazon storefronts, as well through as our physical location at 10180-105 Street in Edmonton, Alberta, and by toll-free telephone (1-877-855-9303). PageMaster presently warehouses limited quantities of over one hundred titles from approximately eighty self-published authors and small, independent presses. ¾¾ PAGEMASTER BOOKS PageMaster is interested in distributing quality publications that are entertaining, engaging, informative and that promote positive change. PageMaster will not consider books for distribution that promote racism, hatred, violence, pornography, or anything else that we feel is in direct opposition to our mission statement. PageMaster reserves the right to reject any work for distribution for any reason at our discretion. 3

¾¾ PAGEMASTER PUBLISHERS PageMaster publishers share a commitment to high standards of excellence – both in content and book production. PageMaster is committed to working with self-published authors and small, independent presses whose publications are well-produced and supported through focused promotional and marketing efforts. Every publisher should have a comprehensive, detailed marketing plan that covers everything from who the target audience of your book will be to the best places to market your book and the kinds of promotional material you’ll need to be successful. ¾¾ DISTRIBUTION SERVICES PageMaster offers three distribution packages: basic, advanced and premium. • Basic: direct sales from PageMaster including e-commerce and order fulfillment. • Advanced: basic plus additional on-line presence at Amazon.ca and Amazon.com. • Premium: advanced plus additional bookseller and library sales.

This service is designed to enable all PageMaster publishers to have a venue and a presence in the marketplace. Your books will receive their own product pages at shoppagemaster.ca. They will be sold at full retail price and you’ll receive 73% net receipts on every sale. ¾¾ PAGEMASTER BOOKSTORE The PageMaster bookstore, ShopPageMaster.ca, functions as our complete catalogue – providing a comprehensive list of authors, publishers and active titles presently available through PageMaster. Some key features of the PageMaster website are: • PRODUCT PAGES: The PageMaster bookstore features detailed product pages that include book descriptions, author biographies, reviews, blurbs, press releases and “look inside” features that enable readers to taste books before they buy. • AUTHOR AND PUBLISHER PAGES: Every self-published author and/or publisher is featured on their very own page easily accessed through our Author/Publisher search function. These pages list all your current titles with PageMaster. 4

• SEARCH FEATURES: The PageMaster bookstore offers many search features that allow potential customers to search for books by title, author, publisher, ISBN, genre, and year of publication. • SEO FEATURES: The store is search engine friendly and titles are searchable on the web and your title should make the first page of a Google search. • LIVE SHIPPING: The PageMaster bookstore offers live shipping, which enables customers around the world to accurately determine shipping costs before they order. • PAYMENT: The PageMaster bookstore supports online payments through Visa, Mastercard, Paypal, by toll free telephone at 1-877-855-9303 or additionally by “pick up” at our physical location. • ONLINE RESOURCES: The PageMaster bookstore features online resources for booksellers, teachers, librarians, authors, publishers and more. PREMIUM DISTRIBUTION PACKAGE Booksellers, Libraries, Schools plus on-line If you’re serious about marketing and selling your book, then PageMaster’s premium distribution package has everything you’ll need to be successful. In addition to every feature of the basic and

5

advanced distribution plans, premium distribution will make your title available to hundreds of independent bookstores, libraries and schools across North America. Your title will be promoted through various updates, both print and electronic, as well as be featured in our various print catalogues. Co-op advertising and group buys are available for our premium distribution partners. Premium distribution is based upon approval by PageMaster. To be considered for premium distribution, contact PageMaster at distribution@pagemaster.ca with information about the titles you want distributed. If everything looks good, we’ll request sample copies of your books. All titles considered for premium distribution must pass our market readiness evaluation, which includes meeting these two basic criteria: • Books must have an ISBN number. • Barcodes must appear on exterior of book. PageMaster strongly encourages all publishers to visit bookstores and libraries and explore similar titles in your genre before your book goes to print. Ask the experts about what makes a great book, how to competitively price your book, as well as about the book qualities that are important to them. If you’re serious about selling your book, some preliminary market research will save you time and money by not having to make changes later on.

FEE AND PAYMENT STRUCTURE: ADVANCED AND PREMIUM DISTRIBUTION PLANS PageMaster rates to publishers • NEW TITLE LISTING FEE: All publishers are charged an initial per-title listing fee of $74; additional titles listed at the same time are $44 per-title. Publishers will be charged a subsequent annual maintenance fee of $14.50 per title the month following the anniversary of the listing. If you wish to discontinue a title, please provide 90 days written notice before the anniversary date. • PREMIUM DISTRIBUTION SET-UP FEE: All publishers whose books are accepted for premium distribution will (in addition to the per-title listing fee) also be charged a one-time set-up fee of $150.

6

• DISCOUNT: PageMaster books are sold at varying discounts, depending on the circumstances of the sale. The primary wholesale discount is 42%, and is given to independent booksellers. The discount on books sold through Amazon is 15% (plus closing fees). Libraries and schools receive a 20% discount. Books sold through the PageMaster bookstore are sold at full retail price (or at discounted promotional prices, including 10% off on 2-5 copies of the same isbn and 20% off 10 or more copies of the same isbn). The maximum discount at which PageMaster books may presently be sold is 42 per cent.

• ADDITIONAL CHARGES: Amazon.ca charges a $0.24 per item closing fee and Amazon.com charges a $1.35 per item closing fee for books – we deduct these from the selling price to arrive at the true “net”. PageMaster charges a $0.34 per item pick fee which is based on the total number of books sold. • NET RECEIPTS: Publishers receive 82% net receipts on every book sold (selling price minus any applicable closing fees), regardless of which discount level books were sold, less the pick fee. Net receipts refers to the actual price books were sold by PageMaster. For example, if your book retails for $11.95 and was sold at a 42% discount, your net receipt equals $5.34. That’s $11.95 x 58% = $6.93 (net), $6.93 x 82% (your portion) = $5.68, $5.68 - $0.34 (pick fee) = $5.34 (payable by PageMaster to you). If your book sold on Amazon.com you would receive $6.87: ((($11.95 x 85%) - $1.35) x 82%) - $0.34 = $6.87. Sold at the PageMaster store you would receive $9.43. • AGREEMENT TERMINATION: Either party can terminate the PageMaster Sales/Distribution Agreement for any reason by providing ninety (90) days written notice. ¾¾ ACCOUNTING • MONTHLY REPORTS: PageMaster will provide monthly sales reports within thirty days of the report period. • QUARTERLY accounting: PageMaster will issue quarterly reports, noting how many books were sold, at what discount, any returns, and owing net receipts. • PAYMENT: Payments are issued quarterly according to a $100 threshold. Net receipts under the minimum threshold will be carried forward to the next quarter. Any outstanding fees or monies owing to PageMaster will be deducted from quarterly payments. ¾¾ COMMUNICATION • CONTACT INFORMATION: Please ensure that PageMaster always has your updated contact information, including email address and telephone number. • NEWSLETTERS: PageMaster will periodically send Publisher newsletters by email with important information about new promotional and marketing opportunities.

SERVICES FOR AUTHORS AND PUBLISHERS ¾¾ NEW TITLES Publishers whose books have already been accepted for premium distribution should inform PageMaster about new titles as soon as they have all necessary information and a firm date of publication. The best way to do this is through the “New Title Information” form listed under “Publisher” resources at the PageMaster website (ShopPageMaster.ca). http://ShopPageMaster.ca/publishers.html 7

¾¾ NEW TITLE INFORMATION FORM Use the “New Title Information” form to provide all the necessary data about your new title. In addition to information like title, author, ISBN, date of publication, etc., PageMaster requires a short synopsis about your new title, a book description and an author biography. An effective and accurate synopsis, book description and author biography are not only strongly recommended, this information is necessary for effective distribution with PageMaster. ¾¾ BACKLIST/ CHANGES TO TITLES The best way to make changes or augment information to titles presently listed at PageMaster is through the “Title Update” form at the PageMaster store website under “Publisher” resources. In addition to changes to book descriptions and author biographies, publishers should use the “Title Update” form to inform PageMaster about new blurbs, interviews and/or links to new reviews. http://ShopPageMaster.ca/publishers.html ¾¾ ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO SEND PAGEMASTER PageMaster requires an image of your cover suitable for catalogue and promotional use. If you are printing at PageMaster we will create required formats (minimum 1200 pixels on the short side high quality jpg, tif or pdf formats). For web use we require an optimized minimum 400 pixel wide JPEG image at 72ppi of the cover of your new title (1000 pixels recommended). Please provide a link to JPEG on the “New Title Information” form or email the file to distribution@pagemaster.ca. Send links, scans or copies of any reviews or other promotional material that we can include on our website or other promotions. ¾¾ If printing at pagemaster PageMaster’s creative department will handle the cover image, look inside pages and copy blurbs from your production files. Your associate will coordinate the distribution copies from your print run. If you have any questions or concerns connect with your associate or email distribution@pagemaster.ca. Communicate number of copies to be shipped/picked up by you and the number to be left for distribution at PageMaster with your associate. The inventory reorder form guides the reprinting from/to threshold (sample on page 13). ¾¾ for titles not printed by PageMaster ¾¾ Consignment Order Once PageMaster has received all the necessary information about your new title, a book record will be created and we will issue a consignment order for a specific quantity of books with a consignment order number. This is a suggested quantity which you can modify slightly to fit your own case quantity. If you feel that our consignment order should be amended to include a larger quantity, please contact distribution@pagemaster.ca. Never send more books than requested by PageMaster without first contacting us.

8

Send books to: PageMaster Publication Services Inc. 10180 105 Street NW Edmonton AB T5J 1C9 Canada The “consignment order” number must appear clearly marked on the outside of all packages to PageMaster. Please do not send books to PageMaster without first contacting us. All packages sent to PageMaster must be prepaid. PageMaster accepts no responsibility for unpaid shipments, customs clearing or for any additional costs whatsoever. ¾¾ Inventory Management Shipments are received directly into our inventory. Publishers must supply an itemized packing slip with each shipment, including the retail price of every title and the “consignment order” number. Notification of receipt by PageMaster will be sent immediately, including any discrepancies between packing slip and actual case quantity. Once your shipment has been processed, the updated quantity will appear on the title(s) product page. As books are sold, the quantity number will drop, enabling publishers to keep track of sales and the effectiveness of their marketing and promotions. If your shipment doesn’t appear online within seven days after you know shipment has arrived at PageMaster, please email distribution@pagemaster.ca. ¾¾ Shipping Books To PageMaster • CONSIGNMENT ORDER: Publishers should fulfill consignment orders in a timely manner to ensure timely distribution. • CARRIERS: All shipments to PageMaster must be prepaid. Publishers are strongly encouraged to purchase appropriate insurance and tracking on any packages sent to PageMaster. Publishers will be notified upon receipt by PageMaster about damaged product due to insufficient packaging. Return shipping or remaindering of damaged product will be the financial responsibility of the publisher. PageMaster strongly encourages that small parcels be wrapped in cardboard and that larger packages are padded, reinforced and wrapped in plastic to prevent damage during transit. • WAREHOUSING: Publishers are provided with insured warehouse space for stock. Although there is no warehousing fee, any books sent in excess of consignment orders may be subject to additional warehousing fees. • DROP SHIPPING: PageMaster does not currently engage in drop-shipping. The only books distributed by PageMaster are those titles physically stocked with us. • PUBLISHER RETURNS: Shipping charges on returns made at the request of the publisher

will be the financial responsibility of the publisher. Returns made at the request of PageMaster will be the financial responsibility of PageMaster. ¾¾ ADDITIONAL LISTINGS All titles distributed through PageMaster are required to be listed with BowkerLink. Additionally, Canadian titles are required to be listed with Library and Archives Canada. Information in these listings should be as accurate and complete as possible. Importantly, all titles distributed through PageMaster should list “PageMaster Publication Services Inc.” as either the “supplier” and/or “distributor” and all titles should be listed as “active” and “available.” If you require help listing your titles with Library and Archives Canada or BowkerLink, please email distribution@pagemaster.ca. • LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES CANADA All publishers who do not receive their Canadian ISBN numbers through PageMaster are required to login to their Publisher account at Library and Archives Canada collectionscanada.gc.ca and list “PageMaster Publication Services Inc.” as their supplier under “Supplier Information.” • BOWKERLINK Listing your new titles with BowkerLink provides metadata to thousands of retailers, libraries, and academic institutions. Additionally, it displays enhanced content such as cover images and book annotations to over one million readers. All publishers who did not receive ISBN numbers through PageMaster are required to create a free account with BowkerLink (if you have not done so already) at bowkerlink.com and add titles distributed through PageMaster to their database. Due to the rules of the BowkerLink agreement, PageMaster cannot do this for you. Fill out all required Publisher information. Please add “PageMaster Publication Services Incorporated (CAN)” under “Distributor Information.” When you have set-up your Publisher information, click on “Add Title” and fill in all the required information. Then click on “Additional Title Information,” adding all relevant information, including your two hundred-fifty words or less “Annotation” for your new title. This annotation will appear on the description page at booksinprint.com. Finally, click on “Upload Cover Image” and upload the your front cover image of your new title. Bowker cover information: We can accept cover images in the following file formats: GIF, TIFF, or JPEG. The image must be no smaller than 400 pixels wide. The resolution should be no less than 72 dpi, but no more than 150 dpi (please do not send extremely high resolution scans, i.e., 300 dpi). The image must be a frontal cover scan (not the entire cover or a shot of the book with drop shadow; product shots will only be accepted in certain cases, such as multivolume sets). The image must be in RGB (do not send images in CMYK). The bit depth should be set no lower than 8. Each scan needs to be a separate file, named by its ISBN with the file suffix (e.g., 9781234567890.tif).

This will appear on the description page beside your annotation. Be sure to add all titles that will be distributed through PageMaster to the BowkerLink database. 10

¾¾ MARKETING Publishers are strongly encouraged to promote and market their titles distributed by PageMaster. We can open the doors of opportunity in trade, library, academic and speciality markets, but ultimately it is up to publishers to capitalize on these opportunities. Publishers should keep PageMaster informed of events like appearances, interviews, readings, etc., as well as new reviews and blurbs so that we may help promote your title. Always remember that distribution does not sell books – books sell through good marketing. The more you do to promote your title, the greater the chance that it will be sold. Please contact distribution@pagemaster.ca if you’re interested in receiving a book marketing planning guide or to discuss marketing services available through PageMaster. ¾¾ E-BOOK CONVERSION AND SALES PageMaster is presently working towards offering E-book conversion and E-book distribution services. Our goal is to make E-book purchasing through independent booksellers, publishers and online through our bookstore easy and secure. This exciting new service will be integrated with PageMaster distribution soon! Please email distribution@pagemaster.ca for more information. ¾¾ FEEDBACK PageMaster is committed to providing all the information and resources publishers require to successfully market and sell their titles. If there is anything you feel should be included in this handbook, or if you have any suggestions or questions about our printing, marketing or distribution services, please email distribution@pagemaster.ca. We want to hear from you! ¾¾ Updates this manual will be updated from time-to-time. Notices and new versions will be emailed and posted on the publisher’s page.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES When you sign a distribution agreement with PageMaster, we expect you to provide a short synopsis of your book, a description of your book, a short author biography, as well as a 1000x pixel wide JPEG photo of your book cover. Additionally, you may provide any quotes or blurbs about your book that will help us list, market and sell your title. These important sales components will be utilized in the PageMaster bookstore, in our catalogue listings, and in a myriad of other promotions and updates to trade, library, academic and speciality markets. WHY PRINT YOUR BOOKS WITH PAGEMASTER PageMaster specializes in words and images in print. At PageMaster, not only do we guarantee that your book will look as good, if not better, than the best books stocked on the shelves of any bookstore in the world, we boast the most reasonable printing rates in town. PageMaster specializes in short batch, digital printing services. We can print as many books as you need, when you need them, from ten copies to one thousand copies. Additionally, we provide a full range of author and publication services such as editing, proofreading, layout, book exterior design, marketing support and much more. We have numerous packages available, or, if your needs are minimal, our services are available a-la-carte so you only pay for the services you need. Additionally, when your books are printed with us, you not only save heavy shipping costs to our warehouse, your book is guaranteed to always be in stock. When more copies are required to fill orders, we will print copies according to the terms of our inventory agreement and you don’t need to worry about paying “up-front” printing costs. Here’s a scenario to consider. Many PageMaster titles are presently studied in universities; every semester, university bookstores order anywhere from seventy-five to one hundred copies of any particular title. If your book is ordered and PageMaster isn’t your printer, you’ll need to pay to have books printed and shipped to our warehouse in order for us to fill the order in a timely fashion. If books aren’t received in a timely fashion, not only will you lose that particular sale, there’s a high chance that your title will be dropped from the curriculum. When PageMaster is your printer, we’ll print copies to cover the order. You’ve paid no up-front printing and shipping costs and you’ve made 82% net receipts (less printing costs) on that order.

12

When all the benefits of printing with PageMaster are taken into account, we’re sure you’ll agree that not only do you want us as the distributor of your titles, you’ll want us as your printer as well.

INVENTORY Re-order This section applies to publishers whose books are printed by PageMaster but can also be used as a guide for inventory replenishment requests for other titles. PageMaster prints books in small batches to eliminate excessive inventory and warehousing. PageMaster reserves the right to print-on-demand (and bill for printing) to prevent stock-outs. Our typical run to refill inventory is twenty copies. The “replenish at” and “to” fields establish the thresholds and a record for batch printing of your title. In order to maximize efficiency on set-ups, PageMaster will attempt to contact publishers before we print to determine if additional publisher copies are required or if the publisher has copies available. The publisher will have twenty-four hours to respond to our request or we will create copies to complete the orders and replenish the inventory. Title
