FRANÇOIS BOISROND PAINTING 1980s-1990s

THE WOLF SCHULZ COLLECTION - PART IV

FRANÇOIS BOISROND has a radiant palette. I believe this delightful energy must come from a loving eye. In deft and colorful strokes he paints what we have all seen a thousand times: the charms of Paris, the beach, the open road and the countryside and, very often, la famille. His particularly sunny view of the world is expressed in paintings that are like Sunday cartoon-strips which let viewers escape the moment. Sometimes we go for a drive in the country, read a favorite novel in bed, or simply enjoy the view beyond our open windows. Boisrond’s method is deceptively simple. Bright colors highlighted by black borders, a cinema-like serial framing, and a light application. Really, so simple are these images that they have an internal buoyancy like a bubble, or a kiss. They rise in the atmosphere full of clarity and light. They give us joy. When Matisse painted his famous fenêtres, first in Coillure and much later in Nice, he gave us a new vocabulary for representing the ordinary. This is the foundation of Boisrond’s practice, that is, the breaking down of the complexity of the real world into a shorthand of color that we can apprehend instantly. It is not a compromise but a concession to feeling. By allowing the attraction to speak for itself we are moved, as it were, to enjoy the moment. With Boisrond, as with Matisse, the viewer is blissfully unaware of the struggles the artist overcame to produce, like a goldsmith or a jeweler, the essence of the thing presented to our eyes. Among my favorite works in the Schulz Collection is one that lies within the realm of what one might call a salon painting, though it is more like a mural. At nearly 18 feet in length, cat. no. 6 is a great sweeping panorama of France, highlighting in the right panel the Seine, the boulevards and the Eiffel Tower of Paris, and on the left side the summery beaches of the Côte d’Azur backed by the green collar of the Esterels. At the center of all this geography is a graphic representation of the artist: his head, with Europe sketched in atop a deeply reddened (sunburned?) face, is centered by images of his family, en vacance, the kids reading and sketching and his wife sleeping blissfully, while the view in the upper left corner is through the windscreen of a car traveling down what appears to be la Route du Littoral, a palm tree beckoning the driver to rest in the shade of its fan-shape leaves. It is a work that belongs in a hotel, hung up behind the concierge, where the battered traveler can enjoy a moment of bliss, and perhaps recount the highlights of his or her vacation, while pulling out the Visa for a final week in the memorable Provençal sun. There is, quite frankly, a healing power in the paintings of François Boirond, and I sometimes look at his canvases as a visual tonic. They act as an invitation to a voyage, or at least a road trip, and I want to grab my bag and explore the divine country that is France, even if I’m half a world away in San Francisco, stuck in the living room of my fog-bound house.
