The Inlet, Ithaca, NY | Site Research & Analysis

[re] Habiting The Inlet

D e s i g n S t u d i o Fa l l 2 0 1 2 T h e I n l e t , I t h a c a , N e w Yo r k After careful consideration of the existing spatial and programmatic conditions in the downtown Ithaca area I noted how its main spine and adjacent spaces had been developed and contained the infrastructure for a sustainable existence: dining, retail, leisure, green space, a r t s , i n s t i t u t i o n a l a n d o ffi c e b u i l d i n g s , e t c . I therefore looked at The Inlet, walking distance from the downtown area, as a possible development space with a location in between the dense urban fabric and a more spread out mountaineous condition that exists in Cayuga Lake. The idea was to develop a space and program that made active use of the site in both its adjacency to the downtown area and unique location which provides great views and access to water activities. The Inlet could therefore work as a second and equally important destination to the downtown Ithaca area.

Site Plan | Proposed Development

The proposal for The Inlet consists of two hotels: one short term and one long term. They are placed above a public strip that plays with interior and exterior conditions to provide a space for leisure and entertainment usable all year long. The main spine connects all t h e s p a c e s a n d i s o n l y i n t e r r u p t e d i n t h e c e n t r a l s p a c e o f t h e g r o u n d fl o o r o f t h e l o n g s t a y hotel, where it is partially enclosed by two gardens that mark the location of skylights, and frame views of the lake and the city while at the same time providing access to the building from the boardwalk. The two hotel volumes have the same width. The short stay grows u pw a rd w h i l e t h e l o n g - s t ay e x p a n d s h o r i zo n t a l l y. Owego Town Hall | Section Perspective & Structure

The Terraced Town Hall was envisioned to use local resources and establish a relationship between the city and the building as well as between the built and unbuilt. In the front is one of the town’s main streets and in the rear a river path for local citizens. Through shifting spaces, extruding and protuding volumes, and the insertion of open and enclosed terraces, the Owego Town Hall accomodates the required programs and at the same time creates a clear spatial and programmatic hierarchy.
