INTRODUCTION

The Kari Yu! program provides youth with the skills and tools they need to develop a vision for their future. The training and coaching methods have continuously been improved with feedback from over 340 companies that have hired Kari Yu! graduates. This publication “Faces and Voices of Kari Yu!”, produced under the supervision and guidance of Ruth San A Jong, presents a sample of the over 2,500 youth that have participated in the Kari Yu! program. The stories are told by the coaches and mentors of the youth themselves. They highlight the daily challenges faced by vulnerable youth in Suriname and how Kari Yu! has helped them to face these obstacles. We share these stories in the hope that you will understand the urgency of supporting youth.

Let’s embrace youth’s energy and innovation, let’s empower them to reach their full potential so that they can contribute to the stability and growth of Suriname.

Alex Anakaba DUBBELE BEPERKING EN TOCH ZELFREDZAAM Alex is vanaf de geboorte invalide en beweegt zich voort in een rolstoel. Ondanks zijn beperking is hij extrovert en heeft geen gebrek aan vrienden. Na de basisschool volgde Alex zijn onderwijs op voortgezet speciaal niveau. Na zich te hebben georiënteerd op de beperkte vakopleidingen die aangeboden werden, koos Alex voor de bouw. Echter werd hij op advies van de school verwezen naar de vakrichting landbouw. Hier zag Alex geen heil in en besloot zijn formele scholing te stoppen.

Als elke andere jongere, heeft ook Alex een droombaan en idealiter werkt hij op de administratie van een kantoor of bedrijf. Om een stap dichterbij zijn dromen te komen schreef Alex zich in voor de basis computercursussen Microsoft Word en Excel. Via de trainingscenter werd hij geïnformeerd over een Kari Yu! partner die trainingen in Cellulair Reparatie aanbood en sessies om een eigen onderneming te starten. Hij schreef zich enthousiast in. Als onderdeel van de training werd een periode van stage gekoppeld. Hier begon de werkelijke uitdaging: er waren geen bedrijven die de rolstoel van Alex konden accommoderen. Hierdoor heeft Alex dit onderdeel van het trainingstraject niet kunnen afmaken.

Ongeveer drie maanden na de training, krijgt Alex,

via zijn coach een baan aangeboden in een cellshop in het district Brokopondo, ongeveer 120 kilometer verwijderd van zijn eigen vertrouwde omgeving.

Alex grijpt de kans aan en verhuist naar Brokopondo. Jammer genoeg is Alex al gauw terug in Sunnypoint. Het was niet rendabel. Er waren te weinig klanten die hun cellulair aanboden voor reparatie.

Terug op Sunnypoint, begon Alex zelfstandig zijn diensten aan te bieden aan familie, vrienden en buurtbewoners. Hij blijft ook solliciteren naar bedrijven. Het werkelijke succes zit in de kracht van Alex zelf! Van de overheid ontvangt Alex een financiële steun. Echter is dit bij lange na niet voldoende om te werken aan zijn toekomst: één waarin hij zelfstandig woont en werkt. ‘Maar ik geef de moed niet op!’ zegt hij met een brede lach.

r Bianca Overeem. Grants Manager DOUBLE DISABLED AND YET SELF-RELIANT Alex is physically disabled from birth and relies on a wheelchair for his mobility. Despite these potential obstacles, he is outgoing and has many friends.

After primary school, Alex enrolled in a Junior Secondary Vocational School for students with special needs. After exploring the limited career options, he decided to specialize in construction, but was referred to agricultural studies instead. Alex didn’t think he would be happy pursuing agricultural studies and decided to drop out of school.

Approximately three months after the training, Alex received a job offer to work in a mobile phone shop in the district of Brokopondo, about 120 kilometers away from his familiar environment. In addition to repairing cellular phones he would support the day-to-day administration. Alex grabbed this chance and relocated to Brokopondo. Unfortunately, it was not long before Alex returned to Sunny Point. ‘It was not profitable’, he says. ‘Very few customers offered their phones for repair at the shop.’

Like any other young person, Alex also had a dream job and in an ideal world he would work as an administrator in an office or in a business. Determined to turn this dream into reality, Alex enrolled in basic computer classes to learn Microsoft Word and Excel. At the training center he learned about a Kari Yu! partner who offered training on repairing mobile phones. He enrolled.

As part of his training, participants were expected to complete an internship period within the private sector. This is where the challenges started: there were no companies who could accommodate Alex’ wheelchair and so Alex could not complete this component of the training.

Back in Sunny Point, Alex started to offer his mobile repair services to family, friends and neighbors. He also continued to seek employment in the private sector. The real success lies in the power of Alex himself! Through the government Alex receives some financial aid, however, this support does not provide appropriate funds for Alex to work on his future: one in which he lives and works independently. ‘But I will never give up!’ he says with a bright smile.

Argil Noordzee

IK RED VANDAAG WEL Je vraagt je meteen af waarom Argil is afgehaakt, wanneer je de slanke jongeman met een bril op en een uitstraling van zelfvertrouwen en intelligentie ziet. Máár na een kort gesprek, realiseer je je dat hij de afgelopen jaren veel tegenslagen op zijn pad heeft gehad en dat hij zich steeds uit de kuil heeft weten te graven. Je staat dan juist versteld van zijn zelfbewustzijn en doorzettingsvermogen.

Argil was 20 jaar toen hij in de examenklas van het VWO zat. Hij deed het goed in de vakken Engels en Nederlands maar had problemen met Wiskunde en Economie-2. In dezelfde periode, raakte zijn vriendin zwanger. Argil wilde voor zijn toekomstig gezin kunnen zorgen en begon elke dag na de school tot middernacht in een restaurant te werken. Je snapt dat hij door dat drukke werkschema geen tijd had om te studeren. Hij slaagde dat jaar niet en stopte met de school. Wanneer je tot hem praat, vertelt hij eerlijk dat hij nog niet ready was voor een kind.

Na de geboorte veroverde de dochter van Argil zijn hart volledig en deed hij al het mogelijke om ervoor te zorgen dat zijn dochtertje en haar moeder alles kregen wat ze nodig hadden. Argil begon ‘s nachts in een casino te werken. Verdrietig was hij dan ook, toen zijn vriendin de relatie wilde beëindigen.

Argil deed alle moeite om meer tijd aan ‘thuis’ te besteden. Hij begon vroeg in de ochtend in een callcenter te werken, zodat hij overdag en ‘s avonds thuis kon zijn bij zijn gezin. Het was al te laat. Zijn vriendin verliet hem en nam hun dochtertje mee.

I’LL MAKE IT THROUGH TODAY Hij houdt zijn tranen in wanneer hij vertelt dat hij zijn dochtertje al zeven maanden niet heeft gezien.

Hij gaat kapot hieraan. Hij raakte in een depressie, bleef drie dagen weg van het werk en kreeg ontslag. Hij vroeg zich af waarvoor hij leefde. Aarzelend vertelde hij dat hij een ander soort leven begon te leiden als overlevingsmechanisme: ‘Het late uitgaansleven, stickies, geen vaste baan, maar hosselen, een ik – red- vandaag- wel denkwijze.’ Hij ‘flipte’ dat hij zijn dochtertje niet mocht zien en functioneerde niet goed.

Na een paar maanden zag hij in dat deze manier van leven anderen alleen de kans zou geven om die tegen hem te gebruiken. Hij wilde het tegendeel bewijzen, hij wilde anderen de kans niet geven slecht over hem te praten. Die dag werd, met het lezen van de oproep voor een training en coaching programma door Stichting Vonzell, een Kari Yu!partner, een keerpunt in zijn leven. Argil schreef zich in en volgt de lessen van het programma. Hij vertelt enthousiast dat vooral de stress managementlessen hem goed doen. ‘De training motiveert me écht, omdat ik niet alleen ben: ik doorloop sámen met mijn klasgenoten dit proces.’ Argil heeft een baan gevonden als verkoopmedewerker bij een opticien.

Hij vertelt trots dat hij getraind wordt om klanten gericht te helpen. Hij weet dat hij nog moet wennen aan een vaste baan. Daarom rekent hij erop dat zijn coach hem begeleidt om te slagen in zijn werk en het behouden van zijn baan. Vol vertrouwen vertelt hij dat hij binnenkort weer contact met zijn dochter zal hebben. Argil, een rustige jongen met ambitie, heeft zijn pad weer gevonden.

When you see Argil, a slender and quiet young man with glasses and an intelligent, self-confident demeanor, you wonder why he dropped out of school.

But after speaking with him, you come to appreciate how he has managed to pick himself up despite the many setbacks he has faced in recent years. His perseverance is inspiring.

Argil was 20 years old when he was in his final year of High School. He did well in English and Dutch, but struggled with Mathematics and Economics. It was in that same year that Argil’s girlfriend became pregnant. Argil wanted to provide for his future family and started working at a restaurant every day after school until midnight. His demanding schedule did not allow for any time to study. That year, he failed his exams and dropped out of school. He admits that he was not ready for a child. But once his daughter was born, she captured his heart completely and he did everything to ensure that she and her mother had everything they needed.

Argil started working in a casino at night and was devastated when his girlfriend wanted to end their relationship. He made every effort to spend more time at home. He began to work at a call center early in the mornings so he could be home with his family in the evenings. “It was too late” he says. His girlfriend left him and took their little daughter with her.

He fights back the tears when he explains that he has not seen his daughter in 7 months. It was killing him from inside.

He slipped into depression and stayed away from work for three consecutive days. He was laid off. He questioned the purpose of his life and he hesitantly told me that, in order to cope, he began to live a different kind of life. In this new life, he got involved in late night partying, drugs, no permanent job but only hustles, and adopted an “I will make it through today” mindset. Devastated about not being able to see his daughter, he was no longer functional. After a few months, he realized that this way of life would make his ability to be a father very questionable. He did not want to give anyone a chance to speak badly about him.

Coming across a Facebook recruitment post for a training and coaching program by stichting Vonzell, a Kari Yu! partner, became a turning point in his life.

Argil enrolled and started attending the training sessions. He tells me enthusiastically that the stress management classes were especially helpful for him. “The training really motivates me because I am not alone; I go through this process together with my classmates.” Argil found a job at an optician. He proudly tells me that he received training in customer service. He knows that he will need to become accustomed to having a full-time position and is depending on his coach to help him to excel at his job and to maintain his employment. Argil is confident that it is only a matter of time before he can see his daughter again. Argil, a quiet but ambitious young man, has found his way again.

Armand Hooglied

DE SMAAK VAN MIJN KEUS Als je Armand wil verrassen, dan doe je dat niet met een bosje bloemen of een belkaart. Je kunt Armand echt blij maken met een heerlijk Surinaams gerecht.

Een heerlijke pot gritbana supu met ‘alles’ erin maakt zijn dag helemaal goed. Wanneer zijn moeder de soep klaarmaakt, kan niets misgaan.

Armand straalt van blijdschap wanneer hij terugdenkt aan de lessen die hij tijdens de Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training heeft gehad. Hij heeft het nu wel goed, dankzij de keus die hij heeft gemaakt om de training te volgen.

Helaas is het niet altijd zo geweest. Hij had een keus gemaakt die niet zo lekker smaakte als die gritbana supu. Armand komt uit een groot gezin van vijftien kinderen. Het was voor zijn ouders moeilijk om financieel rond te komen. Elke dag naar school gaan was voor hem altijd een open vraag. Zal het vandaag wel of niet mogelijk zijn? Na school ging hij hosselen om wat extra centjes te verdienen. Het ging goed met zijn schoolprestaties. Hij maakte de keus om te stoppen met de school. ‘Even stoppen’ om thuis te helpen en te sparen om terug te gaan in het nieuwe schooljaar. De soep smaakte nu als wanhoop en eindigde in demotivatie en stress.

Maar er borrelde iets in Sunny Point, de buurt waar hij woonde en dat was het Kari Yu! programma. Zonder lang nadenken, sloot hij zich aan. “Door de training heb ik leren omgaan met stress en leren budgetteren, een positieve attitude gekregen, en heb ook goed vakmanschap geleerd. Kari Yu! heeft mij geholpen om mijn baan te vinden.”

THE TASTE OF MY CHOICE Armand is momenteel werkzaam in de constructie.

De techniek heeft hem altijd gefascineerd. Elke dag leert hij iets erbij. Hij komt vaak in contact met klanten. “Je leert zoveel mensen kennen, en dat dwingt je om vriendelijk te blijven in elke omstandigheid,” geeft hij met een glimlach aan. Hij moest in deze situatie terugdenken aan de lessen “Een positieve attitude in elke situatie” en “Stress, ik kan het aan” van de Kari Yu! training, En ja je kan ze vergelijken met de smaak van die lekkere gritbana supu.’

Het ontvangen van het Kari Yu! certificaat ervaart hij aan als ‘een doel bereikt’. Het certificaat geeft weer hoop en motivatie. Met deze ervaring wil hij anderen ook aanmoedigen om de stappen te ondernemen om iets van hun leven te maken. “Als je nog de kans hebt om te studeren, geef niet op en als je die niet hebt, houd je bezig met iets productiefs. Kleine stappen doen wonderen!”

If you want to surprise Armand, you don’t do it with a bouquet of flowers or a calling card. You surprise him with a delicious Surinamese dish. A wonderful pot of gritbana supu (ground plantain soup) with all the trimmings will make his day. When his mother prepares the dish, he says, nothing can go wrong.

Armand radiates joy when he thinks back to the lessons he attended during the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training. He is doing well thanks to the training. Unfortunately it has not always been like that. He made a choice which didn’t taste as good as that gritbana supu. He comes from a large family of 15 children. It was difficult for his parents to cope financially. Being able to go to school every day was not guaranteed.

Would it be possible today or not? He was always hustling to earn some extra money after school. He was actually doing well in school. Then he made the choice to quit school, just for some ‘time out’ to help at home and save up to return to school. The soup now tasted like despair with an aftertaste of hopelessness and stress.

But something was simmering at Sunny Point, the neighborhood where he lived, and that was the Kari Yu! program. Without thinking too long he joined in.

‘Through the training, I learned to deal with stress, adopt a positive attitude and learned about budgeting and good workmanship’, he says. ‘Kari Yu! helped me to find my job.’

Armand is currently working in construction, an industry which has always fascinated him. He learns something new every day. He often interacts with customers. ‘You will get to know many people, and it forces you to be friendly in all circumstances,’ he says with a smile. This reminds him of the ‘The Power of a Positive attitude’ and ‘Stress, I can handle it’ modules in the Kari Yu! training. ‘Yes, you can compare it to the tasty gritbana supu.’ He considers his Kari Yu! certificate to be a goal accomplished.

The certificate gives him newfound hope and motivation. After this experience he wants to encourage others to take the steps to make something of their lives. ’If you still have the chance to study, do not give up,’ he says. ‘And if you do not have the chance, do something productive. Small steps do wonders!”

Bianella Amsdorf IK HAD NIET VERWACHT DAT IK ZOVEEL ZOU LEREN Bianelle stopte met de school toen ze in verwachting raakte in de vierde klas van het LBO. Na een zware bevalling met keizersnee, bleef ze thuis om op haar baby te letten. Ze zag geen uitweg en had zich erin berust dat dit haar leven zou zijn. Ze kreeg steun van haar familie, maar er was ook vaak ruzie.

Een van Bianella’s karaktertrekken was dat ze heel snel agressief werd, wat voor veel ruzies heeft gezorgd. Ze wist niet hoe ze met haar agressie moest omgaan.

Op een dag zag ze een flyer van Kari Yu!, die haar neefje op een tafel had gezet. Ze zag telefoonnummers en belde meteen voor informatie. Deze training paste helemaal in haar straatje. Ze wilde aan haar karakter werken, hoe te reageren in moeilijke situaties en ze wilde ook haar familierelaties, waaraan ze heel veel waarde hechtte, versterken. Deze waren de belangrijkste redenen waarom ze de training volgde.

‘Vroeger als je per ongeluk op me trapte, werd ik al boos, ondanks het feit dat je ‘sorry’ zei. Nu ben ik niet meer zo agressief. Ik had niet verwacht dat ik zoveel zou leren op de training. Ik heb zelf een baan kunnen vinden!’

Vacatures zoeken, een sollicitatiebrief, een curriculum vitae samenstellen, zijn dingen die Bianella nu kan. Ze werkt intussen al zes maanden bij de kassa van een pompstation. ‘Ik was zo blij en flexi dat ik maar één dag in plaats van twee dagen nodig had om ingewerkt te worden’, zegt ze trots.

Bianella is een doorzetter, die de Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training heeft afgemaakt ondanks het feit dat haar baby in dezelfde periode in het ziekenhuis was opgenomen met ademhalingsproblemen. Dit gebeurde ongeveer twee weken voordat de vijf weken durende training zou eindigen. Haar moeder, die de beste bedoelingen met haar heeft, eiste dat ze zou stoppen met de training en meer tijd zou besteden aan haar zoontje. Het was geen makkelijke keus voor haar, maar ze besloot om gedurende de ochtenden met haar zoon te zijn in het ziekenhuis en in de middaguren de training voort te zetten. Die keus zorgde weer voor veel spanningen en ruzie in huis. Maar zoals Bianella het zelf zegt: ‘Waar een wil is, is een weg. Kari Yu heeft veel voor mij betekend.’

I DIDN’T EXPECT TO LEARN SO MUCH Bianella was in the final grade of the junior technical school (LBGO) when she found out she was pregrant, and dropped out of school. After she gave birth, she stayed at home to take care of her son. She did not see any way out and thought that this was going to be her life from there on. Although she received support from her family, there was a lot of tension at home. Her aggressive personality was causing her trouble and she did not know how to deal with it.

When she saw the Kari Yu! flyer her nephew had placed on the table, she did not hesitate. She immediately called for more information about the training. This training was right up her alley. She wanted to work on her character, how to react in difficult situations and to strengthen family ties which she valued.

“Before, if you accidentally kicked me, I used to get angry very quickly even if you apologized. Now I am not that aggressive anymore.” The training has also taught her how and where to look for jobs. “When I entered the training, I did not expect to learn so much. Now I can write a job application and a cov-

er letter. I even managed to get myself a job!” For the past six months Bianella has been working as a cashier at a gas station. “I was excited and eager for the opportunity and worked so hard, that I only needed one day instead of two to learn all the work.”

Bianella is a fighter and finished the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training, despite the fact that her baby was hospitalized with respiratory problems about three weeks into the course. Her mother, who has the best intentions for her, ordered her to stop attending the training and to focus on her child instead. It was not an easy choice, but Bianella decided to spend the mornings with her son in the hospital and continued to attend the Kari Yu! training in the afternoons. This choice led to more tension and arguments at home.

But as Bianella always says: “Where there is a will, there is a way. Kari Yu! made it happen for me!”

Carlos Napo

CARLOS, JIJ BLIJFT BIJ ONS! Hij liep er verloren bij. Toen Carlos voor de eerste keer op de training kwam, kon je aan zijn verwaarloosd uiterlijk zien, dat het iemand was die weinig kansen had gekregen in het leven. Maar aan zijn vastberaden blik kon je ook zien dat hij zeker wist dat hij op de juiste plaats was.

Hij ging niet naar school, omdat zijn moeder het duur vond, vertelde hij. Hij woont samen met zijn familie op een erf waarop vier verschillende huizen, de zogeheten prasi osos, staan. Veertig mensen in vier huisjes. De armoede was schrijnend, waardoor hij met enkele andere jongens het verkeerde pad koos en in aanraking kwam met justitie. Op een dag stond hij op de hoek van zijn straat met enkele jongens te hangen toen een mevrouw op hen afstapte en vroeg of ze interesse hadden om mee te doen aan een training. Een training waarbij ze ook zouden werken aan het vinden van een baan. De organisatie zou ze daarna drie maanden begeleiden om hun baan te behouden en daarin te groeien. ‘Ik was heel nieuwsgierig en verrast dat dit mij overkwam’.

Hij werd toegelaten tot de training die verzorgd werd door stichting De Echte Vrijheid, een Kari Yu! Partner. Aangezien Carlos nooit naar school is geweest, kostte het extra moeite om de training bij te benen. Maar dat weerhield Carlos er niet van om zich volledig in te zetten. Tijdens de lessen moest Carlos altijd aangespoord worden om te praten, maar als hij eenmaal over zijn kindje sprak, was hij niet te stoppen. De wil om voor zijn dochtertje te

CARLOS, YOU STAY WITH US! zorgen was er. En hij wist dat een vaste baan het middel was om dat te bereiken.

Carlos is mevrouw Banel, project manager bij De Echte Vrijheid, dankbaar voor haar motivatie en geduld. ‘Bij Carlos heb ik best lang nagedacht over waar ik hem kon plaatsen in een baan’, zegt mevrouw Banel. ‘Waar zou hij op zijn gemak kunnen zijn? Waar zou hij iets leren zonder zich minder te voelen dan de rest? Het zelfbeeld opkrikken is vooral de bedoeling.’ Ellen hield in haar zoektocht ook rekening met zijn passie ‘Voetballen’.

De meest geschikte plek bleek een bandenzaak. De eigenaar bekommert zich al jaren over de doelgroep tweedekansjongeren. Ook voetbalt hij een keer in de week met deze doelgroep. Op de sportdagen is Carlos zelfverzekerd en hij doet met alles mee. ‘Carlos, jij blijft bij ons!’ zegt de werkgever. Carlos toont eigen initiatieven en kon al vrij snel zelfstanding autobanden verwisselen. Hij nam het voortouw en na enkele maanden kreeg hij zelfs de verantwoordelijkheid de zaak ‘s morgens te openen. Carlos kwam ook eerder dan gepland in vaste dienst met een salarisverhoging, ondanks de omstandigheden in het land. Met zijn vaste baan kan hij zijn dochter verzorgen. Mooier kan het niet!

When Carlos first attended the Kari Yu! training he looked lost. His disheveled appearance showed that he was someone who had had very few opportunities in life. However, based on the look of determination in his eyes, one could also tell that he was certain that he was in the right place.

Carlos did not go to school because his mother found it to be too expensive. He lives with his family on a piece of land with four small houses called prasi oso’s, a type of compound dwelling. There, forty people live in four small houses. Poverty is a constant sorrow in his life. As a result, he has made some poor choices along with some other guys and has had some run-ins with law enforcement.

One day he was hanging around his street corner, along with some other boys, when a woman approached them asking whether they would be interested in participating in a training that would help them to find a job. The organization responsible for the training would also coach them for three months in order to help them to keep their jobs and grow as employees. “I was very curious and surprised that this happened to me,” says Carlos.

Stichting De Echte Vrijheid (True Freedom Foundation) carried out this job training initiative under the Kari Yu! program. Because Carlos had never been to school, it took some additional effort for him to keep up in the training, but this did not prevent him from participating. The trainers would always have to encourage him to talk during the sessions, but whenever he spoke about his daughter, he talked passionately about his desire to provide for his little

girl. He knew that having a steady job would be the best way to achieve that.

Carlos is grateful to Ms. Banel, the Project Manager at Stichting De Echte Vrijheid, for her motivation and patience. “I actually had to think quite hard about where to place Carlos”, Ms. Banel recalls.

Where would he feel most at ease? Where could he learn something without feeling inferior? Boosting his self-image was her primary aim. In her quest, she always kept in mind Carlos’ passion for soccer. On the soccer field, Carlos is confident and outgoing.

The most suitable workplace for Carlos turned out to be a tire service company. For years the owner has been concerned about the need to give disadvantaged young men a second chance. Once a week he even plays soccer with these young men.

Carlos was the right fit and was hired. During the company’s recreational sports activities, Carlos participates confidently. “Carlos, you’re staying with us!” the company’s Director told him.

Carlos is proactive at work. He is a quick learner and is already able to replace car tires independently. He is a leader who takes the initiative to fix any problem that comes up. Having impressed his supervisors, he is now also responsible for opening the shop in the mornings. Despite the difficult economic conditions in Suriname, the company fast-tracked the usual trial period and made an early offer to Carlos for a permanent full-time position, along with a pay raise. With his new job he is now able to provide for his daughter. It does not get any better than this.

Clifton Pinas

FOCUS JE OP HET POSITIEVE Geduld is een schone zaak. Een bekend spreekwoord waar Clifton alles van weet. Hij woont samen met zijn ouders, twee broertjes, twee zusjes, een tante en een nicht. Clifton heeft zijn peuterjaren doorgebracht in het district Para. Daarna is hij verhuisd naar Pontbuiten, een moeilijke omgeving met veel uitdagingen. Clifton heeft een aantal vrienden in de buurt, waarmee hij optrekt, maar zegt meteen dat niet alle vrienden goede vrienden zijn. Sommige van de jongens stelen in groepsverband en willen niet werken.

‘Het is een strijd die ik voer. Ik wil niet tot deze groep horen, ik wil iets beters van mijn leven maken. Als je naar je omgeving kijkt, wil je bijna gaan geloven dat deze handelingen de enige uitweg zijn, want je weet niet beter. In de zestien jaren dat ik op Pont woon, kwamen zulke ideeën ook in me op’, zegt hij eerlijk, ‘maar gelukkig heb ik een sterke wil en heb ik me daaraan niet schuldig gemaakt.’

Toen hij 19 was, werd er van hem verwacht dat hij een vriendin had, anders hoorde hij er niet bij. Maar meegaan met de modetrends en een vriendin hebben kost geld. Clifton stopte met de school toen hij in de 2e klas van de Technische school zat.

‘Ik ging met mijn oom werken in ‘gowtu busi’. Ik vond mezelf te oud om mijn ouders geld te vragen. Ik had een vriendin en wilde haar geld geven. Ik heb er drie jaren gewerkt, soms in de keuken maar ook op het goudveld. Moni ben meki.’

Het ging goed, totdat een neef en een oom van Clifton om het leven kwamen in het bos en hij van zijn moeder niet langer op de goudvelden mocht blijven. Terug in Paramaribo, schreef Clifton zich als

FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE 21 jarige weer in op school. Maar na enkele maanden zag hij het niet meer zitten. Hij had geld nodig en wilde zijn ouders niet lastig vallen. Drie jaar lang hosselde hij en nam elke job aan die hij kon vinden.

De enige regelmaat in zijn leven was voetballen in de middag. Financieel had hij het moeilijk.

‘De negatieve gedachten kwamen weer in me op.

Dit leven was ik al zat. Ik wilde iets beters van me leven maken, maar wist niet hoe en waar te beginnen.’

Zijn leven kreeg een andere wending, toen hij van zijn moeder hoorde over het project Kraka Tiki, dat in samenwerking met Kari Yu! werd uitgevoerd.

‘Ik heb mijn voetbalmiddagen opgegeven, omdat ik vijf weken trainingen moest volgen. Ik zag dit als mijn laatste kans en ik heb alles op alles gezet om mijn doel te bereiken. Ik heb gewoon genoeg van die andere manier van leven.’

Met hulp van de coach van het Kraki Tiki project, startte Clifton zes maanden geleden met een stageperiode bij een koeltechnisch installatiebedrijf.

Hij had één doel voor ogen: een arbeidscontract met voorzieningen. Hij viel bij de leiding op door zijn hulpvaardigheid en loyaliteit. Twee maanden later, tekende hij een contract met het bedrijf voor zes maanden.

‘Ik ben vóór half zeven reeds op het werk en heb een goede samenwerking met mijn collega’s. Ze kunnen altijd een beroep op mij doen. Ik adviseer mijn vrienden om geduld te hebben in het leven en traningen te volgen om iets te maken van hun leven.

Ik hoop dat ze tot het besef komen, voordat het te laat is.

Good things come to those who wait. A well-known proverb which Clifton knows all about. He lives with his parents, four younger siblings, an aunt and a cousin. As a toddler, Clifton lived in Para. Afterwards he moved to Pontbuiten, a low-income peri-urban community with many challenges. Clifton has many friends in the neighborhood to hang out with, but is quick to say that not all friends are good friends.

Some of the young men steal in groups and do not want to work.

“It is a constant battle I am fighting. I do not want to belong to this group, I want to make something better of my life. If you look at the environment surrounding you, you would almost think that these actions of stealing are the only way out because you do not know any better. In the sixteen years that I have been living in Pontbuiten, I also had such ideas”, he says honestly, “but thankfully I have a strong willpower and did not let myself become guilty of those actions.”

When he was 19 years old, he was expected to have a girlfriend, otherwise he would not fit in. But following the latest fashion trends and having a girlfriend cost money. Clifton dropped out in his second year of the Technical Vocational School. “I started working in the small-scale gold mines with my uncle. I thought I was too old to ask my parents for money.

I had a girlfriend and wanted to be able to provide for her. I worked there for three years, sometimes in the kitchen, sometimes in the gold mines itself. I made money.”

It all went well until Clifton’s cousin and uncle died in the jungle surrounding the mining fields and Clif-

ton’s mother stopped him from going to the gold mines.

Back in Paramaribo, 21-year-old Clifton re-enrolled in school. However, after a few months, he lost interest. He needed money but he did not want to burden his parents. So for three years, he hustled and took every job that he could find. The only regularity in his life was afternoon soccer. Financially, things were bad.

“I started having negative thoughts again. I was sick of my life. I wanted to make something better of my life but did not know how and where to start.”

Hearing about the ‘Kraki Tiki’ project that was being implemented in collaboration with Kari Yu! became a turning point in his life.

“I gave up my afternoon soccer because I had to attend the five-week training. I saw this as my last chance and I did everything I could to reach my goal. I had just had about enough of that other way of living.”

Six months ago Clifton began an internship at a company that provides installation services for cooling systems. The company’s management team noticed him because of his thoughtful personality and loyalty. He had just one goal: to secure an employment contract with benefits. Two months later he signed a six-month contract with the company.

“I get to work before 6:30AM and I have a good working relationship with my colleagues. They know they can count on me if they need anything. I advise my friends to have patience and attend trainings to make something of their lives. I hope they will come to realize this, before it is too late.

Conchita Stoard IS DAT MIJN SALARIS…. ZOVEEL GELD? Ik ontmoette Conchita tijdens de training van Powered, een Kari Yu! partner. Ze zat achter in de klas toen ik als Kari Yu! job coach een gast presentatie verzorgde. Ze was druk, lachtte luid en verstoorde mijn introductie. Ik sprak haar aan en vroeg haar om zich voor te stellen. Geloof het of niet, ze stond op en liep naar voren met haar tas en al haar bezittingen, stelde zich zelf voor en verontschuldigde zich voor haar gedrag. Ik was meteen geïnteresseerd om haar te leren kennen.

Stel je eigen voor: je bent geboren in een éénoudergezin met vele monden, die gevoed moeten worden. Je bent een van de 6 kinderen en je woont samen met je moeder en grootmoeder in een bouwvallig huisje. Je kiest er noodgedwongen en door de vele ‘struggles’ voor om te gaan werken om je familie te ondersteunen. Je haakt op gegeven moment af van school, want het wordt jou echt te veel.

Je levert met je zuurverdiende centen een bijdrage in de zorg voor je broers en zussen, terwijl jijzelf nog behoefte heb aan zorg en onderwijs. Uiteindelijk trek je in bij een man, met wie je denkt samen een leven te kunnen opbouwen. Je wordt binnen korte tijd moeder van drie kinderen en dan is je man plots met de noorderzon vertrokken. Je staat er alleen voor en moet samen met je kinderen terug naar je ouderlijk huis.

Tijdens ons intake gesprek zegt Conchita dat ze bereid is om elk werk aan te nemen en zichzelf van daaruit op te bouwen. Ze heeft maanden gestruggeld om werk te vinden. ‘Ik heb echt hulp nodig’ zegt ze smekend.

IS THAT MY SALARY, SO MUCH MONEY?

Er kwam een vacature binnen voor interieurverzorgster van de Amerikaanse ambassade en we werkten samen aan haar CV en sollicitatiebrief.

De ambassade belde haar enkele dagen na haar sollicitatiegesprek om haar de baan aan te bieden en om afspraken te maken om haar contract te komen ondertekenen.

‘Ik ga bij de ambassade werken. Ja, ik Conchita, Mijn GOD! Ze dankte me hartelijk voor mijn steun.

Ze kreeg een eerste contract van 6 maanden. ‘Is dit mijn salaris, zo veel geld!’ Riep ze uit.

I met Conchita when she was attending her training at Powered, a Kari Yu! partner program. She sat in the back when I came in as a Kari Yu! Workforce Development Officer to give a guest presentation.

She was restless and was disturbing my introduction. I called her out and asked her to present herself. Believe it or not she got up and walked to the front of the class with her purse and all her belongings, introduced herself and apologized for her behavior. I was intrigued and wanted to get to know her.

‘Het gaat niet goed met Conchita’ hoor ik van haar supervisor aan de andere kant van de lijn. Na de feedback nodigde ik Conchita uit voor een coachingsgesprek. Niet lang daarna werd ik weer gebeld door de supervisor met klachten en ik had wederom een coachingsgesprek met Conchita. Er hing haar ontslag boven het hoofd, maar ze kreeg een zware reprimande, nadat ze zich had verontschuldigd en had toegezegd beter haar best te doen.

Imagine this: You are born in a single-parent family with many mouths to feed. You are one of six children living together in the dilapidated house of your grandmother. Because of the many struggles, you are forced to start working to help support your family. At a certain point you drop out of school, because it just too much for you to handle. With your hard-earned money you contribute to the care of your siblings, while you yourself still need to be taken care of and educated. Next you come to live with a man with whom you thought you could build a life. Soon, you become a mother of three children and then suddenly your partner abandons you. You are left to take care of your children and return to your parental house with your three kids.

Conchita werkt nu al een jaar bij de Amerikaanse ambassade. Bij haar jaarlijkse evaluatie was het commentaar alsvolgt: ‘Conchita is cooperative and open-minded in working with others. She responds quickly to new instructions, situations, methods and procedures. During ‘Make Ready’ Conchita’s performance as a custodian is outstanding.’

During our intake interview, Conchita mentions that she is willing to take on any job and work herself up from there. She has been struggling to find a job for months now. “I really need help”, she says with a pleading voice. I received information about a vacancy for cleaning services at the U.S. Embassy, and together we worked on her jobseeker’s profile and

cover letter. The Embassy called her a few days after her interview and she was offered the position. She had to return a few weeks later to sign her contract.

“I’m going to work at the Embassy. Yes me, me Conchita! Oh My God!” She thanked me warmly for my effort. “Is that my salary, so much money”, she screamed. She received an initial six-month contract.

“Conchita is not doing well”, I heard her supervisor say at the other end of the line. I invited Conchita for a coaching session. Soon, I received another call from her supervisor and yet another coaching session followed. Dismissal was hanging over her head, but after she promised to do better she was strongly reprimanded, instead.

Conchita has been employed by the Embassy for over a year now. At the annual review her rating read as follows: “Conchita is cooperative and open-minded in working with others. She responds quickly to new instructions, situations, methods and procedures. Her progress report concludes: Conchita’s performance as a custodian is outstanding.”

ALLES WAT IK VAN DE TRAINING HEB MEEGEHAD NEEM IK MEE

EVERYTHING I LEARNED AT THE TRAINING WILL BE OF GOOD USE TO ME

Platgemaaid gras, twee doelen en een nummer vijfbal is wat altijd in Dennis zijn gedachten opkomt.

‘Voetbal is mijn passie’ benadrukt hij elke keer. Het veld is de plek waar hij tot rust komt en zich als Ibramovich kan voelen en spelen. Voetballen wil hij tot zijn beroep maken en hij zal er alles aan doen om de bal te beheersen net als Ibra. Naast professioneel voetballen wil hij architect worden. Dit was de motivatie om zijn studie op het amto te starten. Beter kon het leven niet zijn: met voetbal als hobby en student bouwkunde.

De eerste dag was hij als eerste op het erf. Hij nam plaats achter in van het lokaal waar hij heel rustig alles en iedereen observeerde. Ik ontdekte dat hij veel vragen had, maar die niet altijd durfde te stellen. In persoonlijke gesprekken merkte ik dat hij de lessen naar de praktijk vertaalde. Ook zijn motivatie en attitude begonnen zich positief te ontwikkelen.

Hij stelde doelen en maakte plannen om die te bereiken. Met trots gaf hij aan dat hij nu weet, hoe hij zijn droombaan kan bereiken. ‘Ik heb ontdekt wat ik kan en daarmee zal ik beginnen en verder groeien.’

“Soccer is my passion.” The soccer field is where Dennis unwinds and where he can emulate Ibrahimovic, his favorite professional player. Dennis dreams of one day becoming a professional soccer player and controlling the ball like Ibra. He also wants to be an architect. That dream is what motivated Dennis to start his studies at the Evening Senior Technical School (AMTO).

everything and everyone. I noticed that he had many questions, but he did not always dare to ask them. During one-on-one coaching sessions with him, I also realized that he quickly put into practice what he had learned at the training. Over the course of the training program, his motivation levels and attitude improved steadily. He excelled at setting goals and at making plans to achieve those goals.

Maar dan staat zijn wereld op zijn kop. Een zwaar gewicht drukt hem op de schouders: zijn ouders scheiden. Door de scheiding werd de zorg thuis zwaarder. Hij voelde zich verplicht en verantwoordelijk om bij te dragen in de huishouding. Hij besloot eerst zijn studie te combineren met werken.

Later stopt hij met de school om meer uren te kunnen werken. De meeste jobs kreeg hij in de bouw.

In de hete zon sjouwde hij met stenen en zand om het stortmengsel klaar te zetten. Soms deed hij dat met honger en dorst. Toch rekent hij die dagen tot betere dagen, want hij had niet altijd werk. Hij had wel eens thuis gezeten zonder job en een niet afgeronde opleiding. ‘Er was geen uitzicht’ gaf hij aan.

Hij had al ervaring in de bouw en ging verder hiermee. Hij had heel gauw een vaste baan.’Dit werk brengt mij overal en ik leer veel over de constructie van ramen en deuren. Het vak is mij nu eigen geworden. Alles wat ik van de training heb gehad, neem ik met mij mee. Ik herken soms de Kari Yu! lessen en oplossingsmodellen terug op de werkvloer.’

However, shortly after enrolling at AMTO, his world turned upside down. His parents decided to get a divorce. As a result it became more difficult to make ends meet at home. Facing this new hardship, Dennis felt an obligation and responsibility to contribute to the household. First, he decided to combine his studies with work, working primarily in construction.

Then he dropped out of school in order to work longer hours to support his family. In this job he lugged stones and sand in the hot sun to prepare the concrete mixture for pouring. Sometimes he worked on an empty stomach. Despite his struggles, he considered those to be his better days, because at least he had a job. This was not always the case because some days there was no work and he stayed home without a job and without a High School diploma.

Today Dennis proudly states that he knows how he can achieve his dream job. “I have discovered what I am able to do and with that I will start to develop myself.” He already has experience in construction and wants to continue in this field.

On one of the days when he was unemployed, Dennis received a message from a friend about the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training and decided to attend the information session but rushed out because he wanted to go play soccer. Seeing this, I wondered if this young man would actually show up at the training. However, on the first day of training, he was the first to arrive at the training site. He sat in the back row of the classroom, where he quietly observed

Dennis quickly got a job. “This job takes me everywhere, and I learn a lot about the construction of windows and doors.” He adds: “Construction has become second nature to me.” When asked about the difference that the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training has made in his life, he says: “Everything I’ve learned at the training will be of good use to me. I often recall what I have learned during the training sessions and I apply it at my workplace.”

As a job coach, I celebrate the hard work and determination of this rising star.

Eunice Adang GOD LAAT ZIJN KINDEREN NOOIT IN DE STEEK Eunice is een verlegen twintigjarige dame waarachter een stille kracht om door te zetten schuilgaat. Tijdens het intake gesprek met de coaches gaf Eunice aan dat zij een tweede kans wilde om zichzelf een betere toekomst te garanderen. Deze jonge vrouw met haar stille kracht had een doel voor ogen: ze wilde graag bij een mijnbouw bedrijf werken. Zij had al eens gesolliciteerd, maar was niet opgeroepen.

Op de laatste dag van de Kari Yu! training hadden wij, als coaches, een laatste interview met Eunice.

Tijdens het gesprek bleek duidelijk dat de training haar had geleerd hoe om te gaan met stress en hoe haar financiële middelen beter te beheren. Bij de certificaat uitreiking straalde Eunice extra. Wij waren zeer trots om haar getraind te hebben.

Na de training bleven Eunice en ik in contact om na te gaan met welke baan ze aan de slag kon. Op gegeven moment vernam zij van een vriend dat het mijnbouw bedrijf nogmaals op zoek was naar personeel. Ondanks ze intussen al een baan had bij een kippen slagerij, vroeg ze me dringend of ik haar kon helpen met het invullen van een sollicitatieformulier en het oefenen van een sollicitatiegesprek. Ze wist wat ze wilde en ze ging ervoor. Het bedrijf belde haar binnen twee weken. Ze appte mij over het goede nieuws. Eunice zei ‘Gado noyti no e libi en pikin’: God laat zijn kinderen nooit in de steek. Zes maanden geleden werd haar droom realiteit.

GOD NEVER ABANDONS HIS CHILDREN Eunice is a shy twenty-year-old woman with a hidden strength to persevere. During the intake interview with her coaches, Eunice said she wanted a second chance to secure a better future. This young lady with a hidden strength had a goal: she wanted to work at a multinational mining company. She had already applied, but had not received a call back.

On the last day of the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training, the coaches had a final interview with Eunice.

During the interview it became clear that the training had taught Eunice how to deal with stress and how to manage her financial resources. On graduation day Eunice shone even brighter than usual. The coaches were very proud to have trained her.

After her graduation Eunice and her coaches stayed in touch about job opportunities. Eunice has a silent perseverance. At one point she heard from a friend that the mining company she was interested in, was recruiting again. Although she had already taken a job at a slaughterhouse, she eagerly asked her if her coach if she would help her to fill out the application form and to practice interviewing. The company called her within two weeks. She sent her coach a text message with the good news. Eunice said: “Gado noyti ne libi en pikin”, which means God never abandons his children. Six months ago her dream became reality.

Garrien Cabenda (Erika) IK HEB DE KEUS GEMAAKT OM TE ZIJN BIJ MIJN INTRODUCTIEDAG De toelating tot het instituut (COVAB), de opleiding voor verpleegkundigen in Suriname, is voor Erika een droom. Als je droomt, kun je twee dingen doen: blijven slapen of opstaan en achter je dromen aan gaan. Erika staat aan het begin van de verwezenlijking van haar grootste droom. Zij wil anderen helpen: zieke mensen genezen, zieke kinderen bijstaan, ook in de laatste periode van hun leven. Erika wil dat witte uniform dragen! Haar droom om gediplomeerd verpleegster te worden, kan nu eindelijk beginnen. Ze heeft een aanvang gemaakt met de opleiding tot verpleegkundige bij het COVAB. Erika is afkomstig uit de buurt Abra Broki, een volksbuurt. Een buurt waarbij de criminaliteit onder jongeren groot is. Het aantal tienermoeders is schrikbarend hoog, het drugsgebruik onder jongeren eveneens hoog en veel jongeren verlaten de school vroegtijdig vanwege ondisciplinair gedrag. Erika heeft veel van haar klasgenoten om deze redenen de school zien verlaten. Na het doorlopen van de basisschool(glo), volgde Erika het Lager Beroepsgericht Onderwijs(LBO)en stapte succesvol over naar het Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs(mulo). Ze wilde de opleiding tot verpleegkundige volgen, maar dat kon niet vanwege verkeerde informatie over de kosten, de periode van inschrijving en de stukken die ze moest overleggen. Het werd onduidelijk hoe ze verder moest.

Erika raakte gedemotiveerd, maar ze gaf de hoop niet op. Zij wilde zichzelf en de omgeving bewijzen dat opgroeien in wat men de ‘ghetto’ noemt geen belemmering is voor groei.

Toen zij hoorde over het Kari Yu! programma was dit voor haar een mogelijkheid om zich verder te ontwikkelen en haar droom te verwezenlijken.

Dankzij de Kari Yu! Youth to Youth trainingen is Erika gegroeid en kan zij zich nu bijvoorbeeld op correcte wijze voorstellen. Zij weet ook wat de verwachtingen zijn van de omgeving. Erika is nu erg gemotiveerd en zelfverzekerd en weet ook hoe zij om kan gaan met stress. Zij weet ook hoe ze haar geld beter kan beheren. ‘De vaardigheden hebben mij nog meer gemotiveerd om mijn droom te realiseren.’

We gingen samen opzoek naar informatie over de inschrijvingsprocedure van COVAB en na enkele weken vertelde ze me met plezier in haar ogen dat ze was toegelaten tot de opleiding. Het was voor mij als coach duidelijk dat zij het licht in de tunnel weer zag. De Kari Yu! certificaatuitreiking viel samen met de introductiedag van COVAB. Erika zei op hele zachte toon: ‘Ik zou de certificaat uitreiking graag willen meemaken, maar ik heb de keus gemaakt om aanwezig te zijn bij mijn introductiedag.’

Ik was zo trots op haar. Ze is zich ervan bewust dat ze in het leven keuzes moet maken en dat deze weloverwogen moeten zijn. Als Erika zich blijft inzetten op deze manier, komt het zeker goed. Ze heeft haar toekomst in eigen handen genomen.

r Zaviska Lamsberg. Career Counselor I MADE THE CHOICE TO BE PRESENT AT THE ORIENTATION DAY Erika dreamed of becoming a nurse. If you dream you can do two things: continue sleeping or get up and follow your dreams. Erika has taken the first step in making her biggest dream come true. She wants to help others, heal sick people and comfort sick children, even during the last days of their lives. Erika wants to wear the white uniform. Her dream of becoming a registered nurse may finally come true. She has started the training to become a nurse at the COVAB institute.

Erika comes from Abra Broki, a working class neighborhood with high crime rates among young people. The number of teenage mothers in the neighborhood is alarmingly high, as is drug use and many youth drop out of school due to undisciplined behavior. For these reasons Erika saw many of her classmates leave the education system.

After attending Primary Education (GLO), Erika attended Lower Secondary Education (LBO) and successfully transferred to the More Advanced Lower Secondary Education (MULO). She wanted to enroll in nursing school, but could not because of misinformation about the costs and when and how to enroll. It was unclear to her how to proceed. Erika got discouraged, but she did not give up hope.

She wanted to prove to herself and those around her that growing up in the so-called ‘ghetto’ was not an impediment to growth. When she learned about the Kari Yu! program, it was an opportunity to further develop herself and a step towards making her dream come true.

Thanks to the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth program, Erika has grown. Now she knows how to properly introduce herself and what the expectations of the environment are. Erika says she is very motivated, confident and knows how to deal with stress. She knows how to manage her money and the skills she has learned have motivated her even more to work toward her dreams.

A few weeks after we gathered the information on how to enroll, she told me with joyful eyes that she was admitted to the nursing school. As her coach, it was clear to me that she saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Her graduation ceremony coincided with the nursing school’s orientation day, and Erika told me in a very soft voice: ‘I would have liked to experience the graduation, but I have chosen to attend my orientation day instead.’

I was so proud of her. She is aware that she has to make choices in life and that these choices should be well-considered. If Erika remains committed like this, she will definitely do well. She has taken her future into her own hands.

Gordon

EEN VIJFJARENPLAN UITGEZET Gordon zijn realiteit was een nachtmerrie. Vanaf zijn tienerjaren is Gordon een wees en hij woonde met zijn broer. Na de dood van zijn broer, die zelfmoord pleegde, is elke steun die hij nog kon krijgen, weg komen te vallen. De dood van zijn broer had zoveel emotionele schade bij hem veroorzaakt, dat hij heel moeilijk kon functioneren op school. Hij besloot om de tweede klas van de Lagere Technische School te verlaten en een baan te zoeken. Zijn droom om arts te worden vervloog.

Zijn ontevredenheid over zijn leven groeide met de dag. De relatie met zijn collega’s werd met de dag slechter. Met ondersteuning van familie kreeg Gordon uiteindelijk de begeleiding die hij nodig had.

Hij zat inmiddels bij zijn tweede waarschuwingsbrief van zijn werkgever en wist ook dat het niet lang zou duren voordat hij bedankt zou worden.

De werkgever die zijn situatie kende, hield rekening, maar heeft hem toch moeten ontslaan, nadat hij een collega fysiek had aangevallen. Gordon zat toen weer eens werkloos thuis en zonder perspectieven.

Een recruiter kwam op een dag bij zijn huis langs en vertelde over de Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training.

Hij twijfelde in het begin, maar de recruiter overtuigde hem om tenminste de introductiedag bij te wonen.

A FIVE-YEAR PLAN HAS BEEN DEFINED De sessies over ‘Omgaan met stress en emoties’ en ‘solliciteren’ zijn de lessen waar Gordon de meeste waarde aanhecht. Ook de sessies over ‘Werkethiek en Samenwerken’ waren een eye opener. Hij is dankbaar dat zijn coach hem heeft ondersteund met het schrijven van zijn CV. En ook voor de informatie over vacatures die hij van hem ontving.

Je ziet dat zijn leven weer op de rails is. Hij heeft perspectieven voor de toekomst en heeft een vijfjarenplan voor zijn leven uitgezet. Zijn familie ondersteunt hem. Nieuwe vrienden omringen hem.

Tegenwoordig is Gordon de vertegenwoordiger van zijn buurt in de wijkraad en hij werkt al 8 maanden bij een bouwbedrijf als assistent Supervisor.

Zijn werkgever prijst hem de hemel in voor zijn discipline en positive attitude. Omgaan met zijn emoties is zijn grootste levensles geweest. Het verliezen van een geliefde, plagerijtjes op de werkvloer, kritiek van de familie, zijn allen verleden tijd.

Zijn kijk op de wereld is volledig veranderd en een nieuw begin is gemaakt in zijn leven, dankzij het Kari Yu! programma.

Gordon’s reality was a nightmare. As a teenage orphan, Gordon lived with his older brother. When his brother committed suicide, his only support system collapsed. The death of his brother caused him so much emotional damage that he could hardly perform at school. He decided to leave the second grade of Junior Vocational school (LTS) and look for a job. In his eyes, the dream he had of becoming a doctor was gone. His dissatisfaction with life grew day by day.

Although he eventually found work, his relationship with co-workers worsened every day. With support from his family Gordon went to a psychologist for mental support. He received warning letters from his employer and he knew it would not be long before he would be fired. Although his employer knew his situation and took it into consideration, he was forced to discharge Gordon after he got into a physical confrontation with a colleague.

A recruiter came by his house one day and told him about the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training. He hesitated at first but the recruiter convinced him to attend at least the introduction session.

Gordon values the modules on ‘Coping with Stress and Emotions’ and ‘How to Apply for a Job’ the most. The modules about ‘Work Ethic and Collaboration in the Work Environment’ were an eye-opener. He is grateful for his coach, who helped him to develop a jobseeker’s profile and provided him with information about job vacancies.

Today you can see that his life is back on track. He now has a vision for his future: He has developed a five-year plan for his life. His family supports him and he is surrounded by new friends. He is now a Community Council Representative for his neighborhood and has already been working for over 8 months as an Assistant Supervisor at a construction company. His employer highly praises him for his discipline and positive attitude.

Learning to deal with emotions has been his greatest lesson in life. Losing a loved one, being bullied at work and facing criticism from his family are now all in the past. His view of the world has completely changed and Gordon has had a new beginning in his life thanks to Kari Yu!.

IK TREK DOOR TOT DE LATE UREN Gyll werd geboren in het dorpje Dyumu, diep in het binnenland van Suriname. Op tweejarige leeftijd verhuisde hij met zijn vader dichterbij de hoofdstad Paramaribo, waar hij naar school ging. Uiteindelijk verliet Gyll de school toen hij in de 6e klas zat van de basisschool, omdat de kosten hiervoor te zwaar werden. Hij besloot kleine karweitjes te doen om zodoende wat geld in handen te hebben. Hij werkte als handlanger bij de bouw van huizen, zodat hij voor zichzelf kon zorgen. Uiteraard waren er ook perioden waarbij het werk stil lag, en dus ook het inkomen.

Via een buurmeisje hoorde Gyll over het Kari Yu! project, waarbij jongeren getraint worden om een duurzaam inkomen voor zichzelf te bewerkstelligen. ‘Ik kon kiezen uit Cellulair Reparatie, Groenteen Kassenteelt of Mode en Creatie. Tegenwoordig repareert men geen mobiele telefoons als die stuk zijn, maar men koopt een nieuwe. Ik heb geen interesse in de landbouw, dus koos ik voor Mode en Creatie.’ Hij was de enige heer tussen 13 andere dames die soms met hun kleintjes naar de training kwamen. Het was overduidelijk dat Gyll zich niet geïntimideerd voelde door zijn deelname aan een ‘vrouwending’.

I KEEP GOING UNTIL THE LATE HOURS Na de training liep Gyll zes weken stage in een confectiebedrijf om zijn vaardigheden aan te scherpen en te leren omgaan met industriële machines.

Naast de vaardigheden Mode en Creatie, kreeg hij ook sessies over hoe een klein bedrijf te starten.

Momenteel biedt Gyll zijn diensten aan buurtbewoners. Sinds kort krijgt Gyll via een kennis uit een andere buurt, opdrachten om af te werken. Een broek of rok herstellen, gordijnen van een zoom voorzien, maar ook een jurk of kostuum maken, iedereen kent hem intussen. Met fondsen van Kari Yu! kreeg Gyll de beschikking over een tweedehandse naaimachine.

‘Als ik een opdracht heb, ga ik vaak door totdat die af is, ook al moet ik doortrekken tot in de kleine uren. Ik merk dat mijn klanten dit op prijs stellen.’

Gyll legt zijn focus op het perfectioneren van zijn vak. Mode en Creatie is zijn passie geworden.

Gyll was born in the village Dyumu, deep in the interior of Suriname. When he was two years old, he moved with his father closer to the capital Paramaribo, where he attended school. Gyll dropped out of school when he was in the final grade of primary school. Paying school fees became increasingly difficult, so he decided to do odd jobs in order to have some money on hand. To take care of himself, he worked as an assistant at construction sites.

There were also periods where the need for his services reached a standstill and his income came to a halt.

Gyll learned from a girl in his neighborhood about a Kari Yu! partner, which trains young people and enables them to earn a sustainable income. “I could choose between mobile phone repair, vegetables and greenhouses or fashion and design”, he says.

“Nowadays people do not repair broken mobile phones that often, they rather buy a new one. I have no interest in farming, so I opted for fashion and design.” Gyll was the only young man among 13 young women, who often brought their children to the training. But he did not feel intimidated by his participation in a ‘woman’s occupation’.

For six weeks Gyll was stationed as an intern at a clothing company, where he developed his skills and learned to operate heavy-duty sewing machines. In addition to fashion and design skills, he attended several sessions on how to start a small business.

Currently, Gyll offers his services in his neighborhood. Furthermore, a friend from another neighborhood is providing Gyll with orders. Whether it is for mending trousers or a skirt, hemming curtains or making a dress or suit, nowadays everyone knows him. With funding from the Kari Yu! program, Gyll received a second-hand sewing machine for his start-up.

“I will often continue working until the order is completed, even if I have to keep on going till late at night” he says. “I noticed that my clients appreciate this service.” Gyll focuses on perfecting his craft.

Fashion and design have become his passion.

Igay Majokko

UITGAAN IS GEEN INVESTERING Igay las in de krant en op Facebook een oproep om aan een Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training deel te nemen. Basic Life Skills had ze eerder van de padvinderij meegekregen. De pre-employment training, doelen en prioriteiten stellen, en de sessie over een baan vinden en behouden hebben een wezenlijke bijdrage geleverd aan wie ze nú op de werkvloer is.

Tijdens de trainingen was Igay op tijd en deed altijd mee. Zij is degene geweest die altijd rust probeerde te brengen als er onrust was. Ze was net een moeder van de groep. Op de laatste trainingsdag besloten de coaches een ‘sollicitatierepetitie’ te organiseren waarbij de participanten ‘op gesprek’ kwamen.

Iedereen moest formeel gekleed zijn. We waren buitengewoon verrast. Wij hadden enkele vragen opgesteld om te toetsen of de jongeren daadwerkelijk gereed waren voor een sollicitatiegesprek. Igay beantwoordde de vragen naar tevredenheid.

Igay, een zelfverzekerde 22-jarige vrouw, die is opgevoed door een alleenstaande moeder kon haar certificaat met alle eer ontvangen. Omdat ze de oudste van zes kinderen was, deed ze regelmatig de oppas wanneer haar moeder moest werken. In haar vrije tijd ging ze vaak uit met als gevolg dat ze vaak laat kwam op school. Ze werd afgeschreven.

GOING OUT IS NOT AN INVESTMENT 25 kilomenter verwijderd van Paramaribo, moest Igay haar keuzes herevalueren. Er is weinig vertier in Lelydorp en vanwege de afstand naar Paramaribo kon ze zich het niet meer permiteren om uit te gaan.

Uitgaan is geen investering.

Igay stelde haar coaches niet teleur. Meteen na de training vond ze een baan. Ze werkt al 8 maanden in een fabriek in Paramaribo die gespecialiseerd is in aluminium ramen en deuren. Om rond te komen moet ze haar uitgaven prioriteren. Het zou haar niet lukken als ze geen prioriteiten had leren stellen in de Kari Yu! training. Ondanks de afstand naar het werk komt ze op tijd. Via het bedrijf doet ze mee aan vervolg opleidingen. ‘Mijn baan is uitdagend, omdat het traditioneel een ‘mannenbaan’ is’, zegt ze, ‘maar ik vind het een bijzonderheid dat ik ‘mannenwerk’ heb geleerd en het ook kan!’

Igay first learned about the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training through a newspaper and Facebook advertisement. She previously had been introduced to basic life skills at the girls scouts. The pre-employment training and the classes on setting goals and priorities as well as finding and maintaining a job have contributed significantly to her work attitude.

Igay was always on time and participated actively in the training. She was like a mother to the group, who mediated whenever there was any tension.

On the last day of training, the coaches decided to organize mock interviews. The participants had to be formally dressed. We were extremely surprised.

We had prepared some questions to test whether the youth was ready for a job interview. Igay had successfully answered these questions.

Igay, a confident 22-year-old woman, the eldest of six children raised by a single mother, proudly received her certificate. Because she was the eldest child at home, she often took care of her siblings when her mother had to work. Being raised in Paramaribo, she went out to party whenever she had some free time. This also meant that she was often

late to school, which resulted in her being expelled from school. When the family moved to Lelydorp, about 25 kilometers from Paramaribo, she had to re-evaluate her choices. There is little entertainment in Lelydorp and because of the distance to Paramaribo she could not afford to go out anymore. Going out is not an investment.

Igay has not disappointed her coaches. She almost immediately secured a job and for the last 8 months she has been working at a factory in Paramaribo that designs, assembles and installs aluminum windows and doors. To make ends meet she had to prioritize her spending. She would probably have failed, had she not learned to set priorities during the Kari Yu! training. Regardless of the distance between home and her work, she manages to arrive on time. Through her job, she has the opportunity to participate in trainings. “My work is challenging because traditionally it is a ‘man’s job’,” she says, “but I think it is unique that I managed to learn and that now am able to do a man’s job.”

Jade

WANNEER MAG IK DE TRAINING WEER KOMEN VOLGEN? Jade is een jonge Hindoestaanse vrouw die op het eerste gezicht arrogant en ‘gangsterachtig’ overkomt. Zij is niet het type waar je spontaan naartoe zou stappen om een praatje te maken. But as they say, don’t judge the book by its cover. Want als je haar eenmaal kent, is ze heel vrij, lacht vaak en praat ook veel.

Een jaar geleden zat Jade op het havo(dagschool).

In het begin was ze heel enthousiast, maar dat zou snel veranderen. Een nieuwe school, nieuwe vrienden, nieuwe omgeving, afstuderen: alles wat een tiener zou willen. Ergens aan het begin van het schooljaar werden regelmatig roddels over haar verspreid. Ze dacht eerst dat ze het aankon, maar het tegendeel was het geval. ‘Ik wilde huilen, maar wie zou me troosten? Ik wilde weglopen, maar waar zou ik naartoe gaan? Ik wilde heel hard gillen, maar wie zou naar mij luisteren?’

Volgens Jade maakten leerkrachten misbruik van hun macht: pesten en roddelen onderling over hun studenten. Ze sloot zichzelf af van de buitenwereld.

Men vertelde dat ze sigaretten rookte, marijuana gebruikte en doorverkocht aan medestudenten. Ze werd zelf opgeroepen door de directeur om erover te praten. Op vertrouwensbasis gaf ze aan dat ze af en toe marijuana gebruikte. Hierna volgde een schorsing. Een dag wegblijven werd uiteindelijk twee dagen en die werden maanden.

Ze dacht bij zichzelf: ‘Waarom zou ik moeite maken om naar school te gaan? Waarom zou ik tussen mensen willen zijn die mij zo negatief beoordelen?

Wat zou iemand mij kunnen aanleren, die zelf nog heel veel moet leren?’

Van een vriendin hoorde Jade over de Kari Yu! Youth to Youth trainingen en ze werd uitgenodigd voor de informatiesessie. Leergierig als ze is schreef ze zich meteen in. Tijdens de module: ‘Ik en mijn toekomstplannen’ moesten de participanten nadenken over hun toekomst en een stappenplan maken over hoe ze hun doelen zouden bereiken.

Terwijl Jade haar toekomstplannen presenteerde barstte ze in tranen uit. Ik nam haar apart en trooste haar en al gauw kwam het hele verhaal eruit.

Ze schaamde zich, voelde zich bedrogen en in de steek gelaten.

De volgende dag maakte ze de stap om te gaan informeren of ze een kans kreeg om de verloren twee maanden in te halen. Men besloot haar in te schrijven op de avondopleiding van het havo. De Kari Yu! training heeft ze niet afgerond. Jade heeft bewust gekozen voor haar havo opleiding omdat ze begrijpt dat ze het met een formeel diploma veel verder kan schoppen.

Vijf maanden later doet ze het nog steeds heel goed op school en ik kom haar af en toe nog tegen. Elke keer vraagt ze me uitdagend en met een grote glimlach: ‘Wanneer mag ik de training weer komen volgen?’

WHEN CAN I ATTEND THIS TRAINING AGAIN? Jade is a young Hindustani woman, who initially comes across as arrogant and ‘gangster-like’. Because of her attitude she is not the type you would likely approach to have a chat. But as they say, you should not judge a book by its cover. In fact, when you get to know Jade, you quickly realize that she is very open, often smiles and talks a lot.

Last year, Jade was still in high school. At first she was very excited to join a new school, make new friends, experience a new environment and, of course, be part of a graduation. Everything a teenager is looking for. Unfortunately, soon after the school year began, rumors about Jade started to circulate around at school. People were gossiping about how Jade smoked cigarettes and used and dealt marijuana to fellow students. At first she thought she could deal with the gossip, but in fact it hurt her deeply.

According to Jade the teachers abused their power by bullying and gossiping among themselves about their students. “I wanted to cry. But who would comfort me? I felt like running away. But where would I go? I wanted to scream out loud.

But who would listen to me?”, she said. In light of all this, she became socially withdrawn. The principal summoned her to his office to talk about her presumed bad behavior. Because she trusted her principal, she told him honestly that she sometimes smoked Marijuana.

This led to her suspension from school. What started as a one-day suspension from school led to not showing up in school for days and then for months at a time. She thought to herself, “Why should I bother to go to school? Why would I mingle with people who talk so negatively about me? What could someone, who still needs to learn so much herself, teach me?”

A friend told Jade about the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training and invited her to attend an information session. Curious to learn, she enrolled. During the training module ‘Me and My Plans for the Future’ participants were asked to envision what they wanted to achieve in life and to identify the steps they needed to take in order to reach their goals.

During her presentation, Jade burst out into tears. I took her aside to comfort her and soon she started to share her story with me. She felt ashamed, betrayed and abandoned.

The very next day she went to her school to inquire about how she could make up for the two months of classes that she had missed. With the support of school administrators, Jade enrolled in an evening High School program. Jade deliberately chose not to complete the Kari Yu! training, because she realized that, with a formal degree, she could achieve much more in the long run.

Five months later, Jade is doing very well in school.

We bump into each other every now and then and each time she asks with her rebellious voice and bright smile: “When can I attend the Kari Yu! training again?”

SUCCES IS ALTIJD EEN KIND VAN DURF GEWEEST Mariska laat mij altijd terugdenken aan de Bijbelse tekst ‘klei in de hand van de pottenbakker’. Ze luistert en observeert goed. Haar ouders gingen uit elkaar toen ze pas 4 jaar oud was. Tegenwoordig heeft Mariska haar eigen gezin. Ze woont in het district Nickerie. Ze heeft een zoon van 1 jaar en haar moederliefde straalt ze uit. Echter heeft ze vaker ruzie met haar partner en ze hebben financiële problemen. De ervaringen uit haar jeugd zijn nog steeds van invloed op haar dagelijks leven. Thuis gaat het niet goed: ze wordt uitgescholden door haar schoonmoeder en soms mishandeld door haar man. Ze vertikt het echter uit die situatie te geraken. Weggaan van de vader van haar zoon lijkt geen optie. Zal die houding zijn ontstaan door haar eigen ervaring als kind? Is ze bang dat haar zoon ook zonder vader zal opgroeien?

Mariska wist iedereen thuis over te halen haar toestemming te geven om de Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training te volgen. Ze heeft hem helemaal doorlopen. ‘Ik durfde vroeger mijn mening niet te uiten.

Vooral thuis niet. Daar was ik te bang en zenuwachtig voor. Maar nu heb ik durf en zelfvertrouwen.

Daar ben ik trots op!’

Toch gaan dingen niet altijd zoals ze dat wil. But you can’t have the ups without the downs. Haar man gaat soms zo ver dat hij haar met een blauw oog naar het werk laat gaan. Na de afronding van de training heeft Mariska een baan kunnen vinden

bij een lokale supermarkt. De situatie werd er niet beter op, de ruzies bleven aanhouden. Niemand hielp haar, ook niet met de oppas. Haar baby werd ziek. Ze moest hem naar de arts brengen en de werkgever toonde geen begrip. Ze werd ontslagen omdat ze al genoeg ‘verzuimdagen’ had. Mariska verviel weer in het thuisblijven, omdat ze geen oppas had voor haar kind.

Tenslotte vond Mariska werk als interieurverzorgster voor een rijk gezin. De man van Mariska deed af en toe de oppas, maar het liep mis; zo erg dat haar zoontje een keer van het bed viel en zich verwondde. De vraag is of ze de knoop zal doorhakken of in de situatie zal blijven.

Zij is zeker niet meer dezelfde Mariska als voorheen. Ze heeft haar baan behouden en het gaat ook beter met haar zoon. Nu kan ze zelf voor hem zorgen. Zij zit nog in een dilemma als het gaat om haar man. De boodschap van Mariska blijft overeind: ‘Succes is altijd een kind van durf geweest!’

SUCCESS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CHILD OF COURAGE Mariska reminds me of that biblical text of ‘clay in the hand of the potter.’ She is a good listener and is observant. Her parents separated when she was only four years old. Today, Mariska has her own family. She has a one-year-old son and radiates love for her child. However, she and her partner argue often and they face financial troubles. Mariska lives in Nickerie. Her childhood still affects her daily life. Her situation at home is not going very well.

She gets scolded by her mother-in-law and sometimes beaten by her husband, but, she refuses to get out of the situation. Leaving the father of her child is not an option. Does her attitude originate from her childhood experiences? Is she worried that her son will also grow up without a father?

Mariska managed to persuade everyone at home to give her permission to attend the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training, which she completed successfully. “I used to be afraid to express my opinion, especially at home,” she says. “I was scared and nervous to do so. But now, I have courage and confidence and I am proud of it!”

find a job at a local supermarket. The situation at home did not get any better and the fights at home continued. Nobody supported her, not even with babysitting. When her baby fell sick and she had to take him to the doctor, her employer showed no understanding. She had already missed too many days. Mariska fell back into a pattern of staying home and taking care of her child.

Eventually, Mariska found a job as a domestic worker for a wealthy family. Her husband occasionally took care of the baby. But one day it went wrong, and her son fell off the bed and got injured.

The question is whether she will make the decision to break the cycle or remain in the same situation.

She is definitely not the same Mariska that she was before. She has managed to keep her job and her son is doing better. Now she can take care of him herself. She still faces a dilemma when it comes to her husband. Mariska’s message still stands: ‘Success has always been a child of courage.’

Things do not always go as Mariska wishes. But you cannot have the ups without the downs. Her husband sometimes goes so far that she has to go to work with a black eye. Mariska was able to

Jennerino Mendeszoon ZONDER HUIS, HEB JE GEEN THUIS Bij onze eerste kennismaking was Jennerino’s rust meteen merkbaar. Een slanke jongeman van 20 zat rustig in zijn stoel voor zich uit te kijken. Hij neemt bij alles zijn tijd en is zorgvuldig. Hij heeft een positieve instelling over het leven, ondanks alles wat hij heeft meegemaakt en put daar kracht uit.

Zijn gedrevenheid en leergierigheid zijn duidelijk te merken. Wat Jennerino zo bijzonder maakt, is zijn vermogen door te zetten ondanks alle tegenslagen in zijn leven. Te vaak hebben anderen hem teleurgesteld en toch blijft hij hoopvol. Hij probeert andere jongeren te motiveren, om hun leven op te pakken en niet stil te blijven zitten.

Zijn ouders scheidden toen hij een peuter was. Zijn moeder overleed toen hij negen was. Nooit heeft iemand hem verteld waaraan zijn moeder stierf. Na de dood van zijn moeder werd hij door verschillende familieleden opgevangen. Dit betekende vele verhuizingen. Uiteindelijk belandde hij bij een tante in Frans-Guyana. Al die tijd had hij helemaal geen contact met zijn vader. Pas toen hij 18 jaar was, heeft hij zijn vader voor het eerst ontmoet.

Zonder huis heb je geen thuis. Het grootste probleem waar Jennerino mee zit, is huisvesting. Hij heeft van jongs af te vaak moeten verhuizen. WITHOUT A HOUSE, YOU DON’T HAVE A HOME straat. Zonder reden. Zijn tante had hem uit huis gezet. Hij was teleurgesteld in haar en vond het jammer dat men zo met hem was omgegaan. Op deze manier is het moeilijk voor Jennerino om anderen en vooral familie te vertrouwen.

Nu woont hij in bij een vriend die hem een voorlopige plek heeft aangeboden. Maar hij weet dat hij daar niet lang kan blijven en kijkt uit naar iets anders. ‘Ik wil mijn eigen huis hebben. Ik wil graag stabiliteit en rust.’ Elke dag maakt hij zich zorgen over hoe hij verder moet. Vanwege de hoge huurprijzen in Paramaribo, maakt hij zich elke dag bezorgd over hoe verder te gaan, maar hij is ervan overtuigd dat het zal lukken.

Het is nu 8 maanden geleden dat hij is gestart bij een aluminium assemblage en glasbewerkingsbedrijf. Hier heeft hij glas leren snijden en zijn computervaardigheden aangescherpt. De technische kennis die hij op school heeft opgedaan komt goed van pas. Trots vertelde hij dat hij tijdens zijn eerste werkweek al zijn opdrachten goed had uitgevoerd. Hij voelde zich vereerd toen hij tijdens een certificaatuitreiking van het Kari Yu! programma, als (oud)geslaagde een speech mocht houden voor de nieuwe groep jongeren.

When I met him, Jennerino’s tranquility was immediately noticeable. A slim, twenty-year-old man sat quietly in his chair, staring into space. He took his time with everything and worked meticulously.

Despite everything he has been through he has a positive attitude towards life. His enthusiasm and eagerness to learn stand out. What makes Jennerino so special, is his ability to persevere despite setbacks in his life. Too often others have disappointed him and yet he remains hopeful and tries to motivate other young people to pick up their lives and to not give up.

His parents got divorced, when he was still a toddler and his mother died when he was nine. No one has ever told him how she died. After the death of his mother, he was taken in by several family members. This meant he had to move often. Eventually he ended up with an aunt in French Guiana. All this time he had not had any contact with his father. He finally met his father when he turned 18.

“Without a house you do not have a home.” The biggest problem Jennerino faces is housing. Since childhood, he was taken in by different family members. Now he is older, but he still has no permanent residence. Until recently he lived with an aunt. One day he was unpleasantly surprised to come home and find all of his belongings packed in trash bags

on the street. His aunt had evicted him, without giving him an explanation. He was disappointed in his aunt and felt sad that people treated him this way.

It is difficult for Jennerino to trust others, especially family members. Now he lives with a friend, who has offered him a temporary place. As he knows that he cannot stay there for long, he is planning ahead for something else. “I want to have my own house. I want stability and peace.” With the high rents in Paramaribo, he worries every day about how to proceed, but he is determined to succeed.

It has been 8 months since he started to work at a factory that designs and assembles aluminum and glass windows. Through this job, he learned to cut glass and developed his computer skills. The technical knowledge he gained in school comes in handy. “I completed all of my assignments successfully, during my first week on the job”, he said proudly. He felt very honored when he was selected to give a motivational speech to a new group of youth participants at one of the graduation ceremonies of the Kari Yu! program.

ZIJ HEBBEN MIJ GEBELD! Het district Para is ver van Paramaribo, maar Michelle heeft niet anders gewild dan daar te wonen omringd door familie en vrienden. Als jongste uit een gezin van zes kinderen hebben haar ouders het niet altijd gemakkelijk gehad. Eten kwamen ze niet tekort, maar een geweldig goed leven hadden ze ook niet. Nadat zij het LBO in Lelydorp met succes afrondde, vervolgde ze haar opleiding op het AMTO (Algemeen Middelbaar Technisch Onderwijs). Haar afstudeervak was werktuigbouwkunde.

Op het AMTO begon ze een relatie met haar vriend Tyrone. Na twee jaren raakte zij ongepland zwanger en ze bezocht de school tot de achtste maand van haar zwangerschap. Na de geboorte van haar zoontje begon ze het volgend schooljaar weer met les volgen, maar zij kon zich niet concentreren. Ze stopte weer. Haar vriend Tyrone nam zijn verantwoordelijkheid als man om voor haar en hun zoontje Jemairo te zorgen.

Als jonge vrouw uit Para wilde Michelle niet stil blijven zitten. Zij wil bewijzen dat ze kán werken en zichzelf kan ontwikkelen tot een zelfstandige vrouw.

Haar ogen stralen passie en gedrevenheid uit en vooral ook ‘no nonsense’. Rood staat symbool voor ‘strijder’ bij de inheemsen. Niemand weerhoudt haar van wat zij wil. Haar beschermende houding naar haar geliefden is manifest: haar zoon en Tyrone zijn haar alles.

Van haar schoonmoeder hoorde zij van het Kari Yu! Youth to Youth programma. Het leren omgaan met stress was het belangrijkste dat zij heeft geleerd en toegepast in haar privéleven. Michelle had veel baat

THEY CALLED ME! bij skills die de pre-employment training bevatte. Intussen weet zij zich voor te stellen en aan verwachtingen van haar werkgever te voldoen.

Michelle neemt zelf initiatief om te solliciteren. Zij wil en moét werken en gaat er alles aan doen om dat te bereiken. Michelle heeft een week na de certificaatuitreiking een uitnodiging gehad voor een sollicitatiegesprek bij een fast food bedrijf. ‘Het is goed gegaan en ze gaan me zeker terugbellen’. De volgende middag kreeg ik, als coach, van Michelle een bericht met de woorden: ‘Zij hebben me gebeld!’

Op de avond vóór haar oriëntatiedag belde Michelle mij huilend op. Snikkend vertelde ze dat er zwaar gewapende agenten thuis bij haar waren en Tyrone hadden gearresteerd. Ze wist de reden niet. Zij was heel verdrietig en gedemotiveerd. Ik sprak haar moed in en ik herinnerde haar aan haar eigen toekomstplannen. De volgende ochtend schraapte ze alle moed bijeen en wij gingen samen naar haar oriëntatiedag voor haar eerste baan. Na het gesprek reden wij naar het hoofdbureau van de politie. Bij de parkeerplaats ging haar telefoon over. Huilend van blijdschap sprak zij haar schoonmoeder en maakte bekend dat Tyrone vrij was: hij was onterecht aangehouden. Ze was zichtbaar opgelucht.

Met positieve energie keek Michelle uit naar het telefoontje van de werkgever om te horen wanneer ze daadwerkelijk mocht beginnen. Ze werkt al vijf maanden als crewmember in het fast food restaurant in Paramaribo. Zoals het vuur dat uit haar ogen straalt, zo gedreven is Michelle om haar doel te bereiken en haar dromen te realiseren. She is into it!

The district of Para is far away from Paramaribo, but Michelle loves living there, surrounded by family and friends. As the youngest of a family of six children, she notes that her parents did not always have it easy. Though there was no shortage of food, life was not always great. After successfully completing the Lower Vocational Education in Lelydorp, she continued her education at the Secondary Technical School (AMTO). Her major was Mechanical Engineering.

In Secondary Technical School she began dating Tyrone. After two years, she faced an unplanned pregnancy and she continued to attend school until the eighth month of her pregnancy. Following the birth of her son, she returned to school son, but she could not concentrate. This time she dropped out of school. Her boyfriend, Tyrone, took the responsibility to provide and care for her and their son Jemairo.

As a young woman from Para, Michelle did not want to sit back. She wanted to prove that she can work and become an independent woman. Her eyes radiate passion and enthusiasm and, above all, a ‘no nonsense’ attitude. In the indigenous communities of Suriname, the color red is symbolic of warriors.

No one can keep her from what she wants. Her protective attitude towards her loved ones is clear: Tyrone and her son are her everything.

Her mother-in-law told her about the Kari Yu! training and she immediately enrolled. Learning to deal with stress was the most important thing she learned and applies in her private life. Michelle

also had much benefit from the basic life skills that the pre-employment training had taught her. She learned how to introduce herself and develop a good work ethic.

Michelle took the initiative to apply for jobs herself.

She wanted and needed to work and was willing to do anything to achieve this goal. One week after she completed the Kari Yu! training, she was invited to an interview for a job at a local fast food company. That afternoon Michelle sent me, her coach, a text message: “They called me!”

The night before her orientation session with her new employer, Michelle called me crying. Sobbing, she told me that heavily armed police officers had come to her house and arrested Tyrone. She did not know why. She felt sad and hopeless. I comforted her and encouraged her not to give up on her own goals. The next morning she gathered her courage and I escorted her to the orientation meeting for her first job. Afterwards, we went to the main police station. Her phone rang while we were in the parking lot. Weeping with joy, she spoke to her mother-in-law and announced that Tyrone was released. He was wrongfully arrested. She was visibly relieved.

With positive energy, Michelle looked forward to the call from her future employer to hear when she could start working. She started working as a crew member at the fast food restaurant in Paramaribo five months ago. Just as the fire that sparkles in her eyes, Michelle will reach her goal and stay motivated to achieve her dreams. She is into it!

‘Mi yere fu a training en mi kon volg, want mi wan mek wan san fu mi libi.’ Ze is 23 jaar en vertelt altijd met trots dat ze twee mooie kinderen heeft. Natasja straalt met haar glimlach en praat heel vlot. Ik zeg tegen mezelf: ‘Dit wordt een interessante periode met deze dame!’

Natasja is zes jaren terug gestopt met de school. Ze zat toen in de tweede klas van het lager beroepsgericht onderwijs (LBO). ‘De leerkrachten hebben haar altijd bestempeld als een babbelkous.’ Zij brengt mij terug naar de laatste dag waarop ze in haar blauwe uniform de school bezoekt. Natasja staat met haar vriendinnen een spannende tori te praten. De bel van de school luidt en iedereen gaat naar binnen.

Natasja kletst nog steeds met haar vriendinnen. De leerkracht schreeuwt: ‘Natasja, je kletst te veel! Het zijn kinderen als jij die niets worden in het leven!

Waarom kom je naar school? Je hoort onder de markt thuis. Of misschien aan de Watermolenstraat!’.

(De Watermolenstraat is bekend van het commerciële sekswerk).

Ala zekering ini a meisje ede naki panya, alle stoppen sloegen door. Ze geeft als antwoord terug: ‘Juffrouw, da na yu man mi sa opo teki na Watermolenstraat!’ De scheldpartij werd een hele sensatie.

Natasja wordt afgeschreven.

Vanaf die dag zit zij thuis. Haar moeder zegt haar: ‘Na a taki san yu sabi taki, meki tide yu sidon na probleem, het is steeds het geklets van jou dat je in de problemen brengt. Ga nu je eigen school zoeken, want ik ben moe!’ Een maand nadat ze is afgeschreven ontdekt Natasja dat ze in verwachting is.

Ze voelt zich kapot en gebroken. Eerst de school en nu in verwachting. Hoe vertelt ze dit aan haar moeder? Hoe moet ze verder?

De eerste week van de training observeer ik haar interactie met andere jongeren. Als er vragen gesteld worden, is ze altijd de eerste die antwoord wil geven gevolgd door een anekdote. Tijdens een gesprek heb ik haar uitgelegd dat praten goed is, maar dat de manier waaróp heel belangrijk is en dat luisteren daar ook deel van uitmaakt. Na onze vervolgafspraken probeerde zij dat. Het ging echter moeizaam: ‘het is moeilijk, ik ben gewend veel te praten.’

Toen de lessen ‘Hoe zeg ik wat ik wil’ en ‘Assertief-zijn’ aan de orde kwamen, ging er een wereld voor haar open. Uit deze lessen heeft ze het meest gehaald. Vanaf die dag heeft Natasja zich anders gedragen: ‘Gio zegt, ik moet opletten hoe ik spreek, dus let ik erop.’

Twee weken na de certificaatuitreiking was ze uitgenodigd voor een sollicitatiegesprek. Haar afspraak was om 10.00u en om 11.00u stond Natasja bij mij op kantoor. Ze haalde met een glimlach haar nieuwe uniform uit haar tas! Ze was meteen aangenomen en mocht diezelfde avond beginnen. Ik was verrast.

Natasja zag dat en zei : ‘Kari Yu! poti mi bun’ en bedankte mij voor het vertrouwen in haar. Ik voelde een brok in mijn keel toen Natasja aangaf: ‘Als alle leerkrachten op school als Gio en Tatjana (de Kari Yu! Career Counselor en Facilitator) waren, zou ik nu op de universiteit zitten.’

IF ONLY ALL TEACHERS WERE LIKE MY KARI YU! TRAINERS Natasja is 23 years old and always proudly tells me, her career counselor, that she has two lovely children. When I first met her, I immediately noticed her radiant smile and her calm and gentle way of speaking. “I heard about the Kari Yu! training and I knew that I should enroll, so I could make something of my life,” she said.

Natasja dropped out of school six years ago, when she was in the second grade of Junior Vocational Oriented Education (LBO). She told me how it all happened. When she was in school, teachers were always telling her that she was a chatterbox. On the day she dropped out of school, she had been chatting with her friends with her usual enthusiasm.

When the school bell rang, the students walked toward their classes but Natasja and her friends continued to share stories. Then suddenly, a teacher yelled: “Natasja, you talk too much! It is children like you who become nothing in life! Why do you even bother coming to school? You belong at a market or maybe at Watermolenstraat!” Watermolenstraat is a street in Paramaribo that is known for sex workers.

When she heard this insult, Natasja became irate.

She snapped back, saying “Miss, that’s probably where I’ll pick up your husband!” This heated argument created quite a scene in school and Natasja was expelled. When she arrived at home, her mother told her, “Once again that big mouth of yours has gotten you into trouble. Now you can go and find yourself a school, because I am fed up!” A month after being expelled from school, Natasja found out that she was pregnant. She was devastated. First the school and now a pregnancy. How would she tell her mother? What was she going to do?

When she first started coming to the Kari Yu! training sessions, I noticed how she interacted with the other participants. Whenever we, as the facilitator and the career counselor, asked the class any question, Natasja was always the first to answer.

With each answer, Natasja would share an anecdote from her life. During one of our one-on-one coaching sessions, I explained to Natasja that talking was a good thing, but that the way in which one communicates was especially important and that listening was also part of effective communication. After that conversation, Natasja tried to put in practice what I had told her. “It is so hard, because I am used to talking a lot,” she would say.

After the modules on ‘How to say what I want’ and ‘Being assertive,’ her eyes were opened to a whole new world. From that day on, Natasja began to behave differently. She frequently mentions, “My career counselor Gio says I should be aware of how I speak, so now I watch my tongue!”

Two weeks after graduating and receiving her certificate for completing the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training, Natasja was invited for a job interview.

Her appointment was at 10 a.m. By 11 o’clock she met me at the PADF office. Smiling from ear to ear, she took something out of her purse and showed it to me. It was a work uniform. She had been hired on the spot and was told to start that very same evening! I was very surprised. Noticing this, she told me, “Kari Yu! made it happen for me!” Filled with emotion, Natasja added, “If only all teachers in school were like Gio and Tatyana (her Kari Yu! career counselor and facilitator), I would be attending University now.”

Soulele Meyer

NU ZIJN DE ROLLEN OMGEKEERD Soulele was 24 jaar toen zij begon met de Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training. Soulele was altijd vrolijk. Wanneer er grappen gemaakt werden tijdens de les begon Soulele altijd te schaterlachen waarbij ze soms tranen in haar ogen kreeg. Ze is moeder van twee mooie meisjes die voor haar de wereld betekenen.

Soulele werd zwanger toen ze 19 jaar was. Haar familie stootte haar om die reden af. Toen haar moeder stierf op haar twintigste werd de situatie erger.

De communicatie met de familie werd minder en de spanningen groeiden. En net wanneer je denkt dat dát het ergste is wat een jonge vrouw kan overkomen, begon ze ook gepest te worden door buurtbewoners. Er ging een gerucht rond dat Soulele geïnfecteerd was met HIV. Haar zelfverzekerdheid kreeg een deuk. Ze raakte vrienden kwijt en vereenzaamde. ‘De verantwoordelijkheid om voor een kind te zorgen is toch altijd alleen bij de moeder’, zegt Soulele. Alhoewel ze steun kreeg van de vader van haar kind, werkte Soulele toch altijd om zichzelf en haar kind te verzorgen. Soms kon ze een verhaal vertellen over hoe ze boos werd op een klant op het werk: ‘Ja maar de klanten kunnen ook goed onbeleefd zijn hoor!’ gaf ze dan als excuus voor haar eigen gedrag.

Op haar 22ste raakte ze weer in verwachting. Ze wist dat het moeilijk zou zijn om als alleenstaande moeder te zorgen voor twee kinderen, maar ze voelde zich de gelukkigste vrouw op de wereld. Totdat ze haar baan kwijtraakte vanwege haar zwangerschap.

De werkgever vond het een te groot risico om haar in dienst te houden. Teleurgesteld, wanhopig en zonder perspectieven bleef ze anderhalf jaar thuis.

NOW THE ROLES HAVE TURNED Van haar nichtje hoorde ze over de Kari Yu! training en de ondersteuning die je kon krijgen bij het zoeken naar een baan. Zij was meteen enthousiast.

Misschien was dit de kans om haar leven weer op rails te krijgen. Bij de lessen over ‘Werkethiek en Samenwerken’ gaf ze veel voorbeelden en vertelde ze de overige deelnemers over haar ervaringen op het werk. Tijdens de les over ‘Stress Management’ was ze opvallend stil en tegen het einde van de les presenteerde ze schoorvoetend hoe ze zou omgaan met stress. Ze kreeg een daverend applaus van de groep. Na de 5 weken durende Kari Yu! training mocht Soulele haar certificaat in ontvangst nemen.

Het was duidelijk te merken dat zij trots was op zichzelf. Ik kan mij nog goed herinneren wat ze op de laatste dag van de training zei: ‘Deze training heeft mij sterker gemaakt.’

Na de training merkte ik, trainer van Soulele, dat zij ook erg proactief is. Zij solliciteerde zelfstandig naar meerdere bedrijven en was altijd op zoek naar vacatures. Uiteindelijk werd zij gebeld door een uitzendbureau. De blijdschap was duidelijk te merken toen zij mij het nieuws vertelde. Zij kreeg een contract van twee maanden. Na verloop van haar contract is Soulele weer naarstig op zoek gegaan naar een baan. Ze solliciteerde onder andere bij een fastfood restaurant. Super blij belde ze mij om te vertellen dat ze was uitgenodigd voor een sollicitatiegesprek.

Ai, zij is een echte doorzetter. Intussen werkt ze al langer dan 8 maanden met veel plezier in het restaurant. De communicatie met klanten en collega’s is positief. Met haar dochters gaat het goed, ze zitten nu beide op school. Zo af en toe hebben wij contact. Nu zijn de rollen omgekeerd en moedigt zij mij aan om door te zetten en mijn studie af te maken.

Soulele was 24 years old when she enrolled in the Kari Yu! Youth to Youth training. She is always jolly. When jokes are made, Soulele has the loudest, most infectious laugh and sometimes even a tear in her eye! She is the mother of two beautiful girls, who mean the world to her.

Soulele became pregnant when she was 19 years old. For that reason, her family pushed her away.

When she was 20 years old, her mother died and the situation only worsened. Tensions grew and communication with her family became extinct.

And just when you thought that was the worst thing that could happen to a young woman, she also started getting bullied by her neighbors. A rumor was spreading that Soulele was infected with HIV. Her self-confidence got a dent. She lost friends and became very lonely. “The responsibility to care for a child is still exclusively put on the mother”, Soulele said. Even though she had support from the father of her child, Soulele always worked to provide for herself and her child. Sometimes she would talk about how angry she used to get at customers at her workplace: “Yes but the customers can also be extremely rude, you know!”, she would say as an excuse for her own behavior.

At 22 she became pregnant again. She knew that it would be difficult to care for her children as a single mother, but she was the happiest woman in the world. That was until she lost her job because of her pregnancy. Her employer thought it too large a risk to keep her employed. Disappointed, disheartened and without any future prospects, she stayed home for one and a half years.

That is when, through her cousin, she learned about the Kari Yu! training and the support she would get afterwards when looking for a job. She was excited.

Maybe this was her chance to get her life back on track. In the Kari Yu! modules on ‘Work Ethic and Collaboration’, she provided many examples and told the other participants all about the experiences she had gained during her last job. During the module on ‘Stress Management’, she was particularly quiet and at the end of the class, she hesitantly presented how she would deal with stress. She received an overwhelming applause from her classmates. After the five-week Kari Yu! training, Soulele received her certificate. It was clear that she was proud of herself. I, as her trainer, remember clearly what she said on the last day of training: “This training has made me stronger.” After the training, I noticed that Soulele became very proactive. She applied to several companies on her own and was always looking for job openings.

Finally, she was called by a placement agency. The joy was apparent when she shared the news with me: She was offered a two-month contract. After completing her temporary contract, she once again eagerly looked for jobs. One of the places where she applied was a fast food restaurant. She called me and told me excitedly that she had been invited for a job interview. Soulele is indeed a go-getter. She now has been working at the restaurant for over 8 months. Her communication with customers and co-workers is going very well. Her daughters are also doing well, they are now both in school. We have contact every now and then, but now that the tables are turned, she is the one who encourages me to persevere and to complete my studies.

opment and the development of her two-year-old son Luciano. Furthermore, she now knows that she is the sum of all her choices. Therefore, she now thinks more carefully about the consequences of her choices, not only for her own life, but also for her son and her family.

Sumenda zat in de tweede klas van het Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs(mulo) toen zij gedemotiveerd raakte omdat ze geen ondersteuning kreeg van haar familie. Ze besloot te stoppen met de school maar kwam er echter gauw achter dat ze, om haar droom te verwezenlijken, de draad weer zou moeten oppakken. Ze wil graag leerkracht worden, zodat zij een bijdrage kan leveren aan het gebied waarvan haar familie afkomstig is: het Boven-Suriname gebied.

Toen zij tijdens haar vakantiebezoek in het Boven-Suriname gebied werd benaderd voor een baan in de transportsector ging zij direct op onderzoek uit. Zij nam de baan aan en werkt nu als controleur op de passagiersboot, die vanuit Atjoni de verschillende dorpen langs de rivier aandoet.

Soms is het eng wanneer de boot door de stroomversnellingen moet gaan, maar zij gelooft dat God haar altijd beschermt. Zij woont weer bij haar moeder op Nieuw-Aurora en dit levert het voordeel op dat ze zich geen zorgen hoeft te maken over oppas voor haar zoon. Ze kan ook makkelijker sparen voor de toekomst. Sumenda heeft nog een lange weg te gaan om haar droom te verwezenlijken.

Maar waar een wil is, is een weg en die weg bewandelt ze.

Sumenda attended school up to the second year of Junior Secondary School. She wanted to become a teacher, so that she could make a positive contribution to her community in the interior area of Upper Suriname. However, she lost motivation and dropped out of school, because of the lack of support from home. After leaving school, she quickly understood that, in order to achieve her dream of building a better life for herself, she would have to take up the reins once more.

While vacationing in the Upper Suriname area, she was offered a job in the transport sector. After learning more about the job, she immediately accepted the position. Now Sumenda works as a conductor on a passenger boat, visiting various villages along the Suriname River. Although it can often be frightening, when the boat passes through rapids, Sumenda stays calm, because she believes that God will always protect her. She is also happy to be living close to her mother in the village New Aurora. Having her family nearby not only allows Sumenda to work without worrying about day care for her son, but also lets her save money for their future. She still has a long way to go before achieving her dream, but Sumenda is determined and convinced that where there is a will, there is a way.

Vada Plein (Tairen) DURF TE DROMEN EN WAKA GO MITI EN Tairen is zijn roepnaam. Verlegen liep hij de eerste dag het terrein op. Bij de oefeningen waar de jongens moesten vertellen waar ze zichzelf over twee jaar zagen of welk zelfbeeld ze op dit moment hadden, was Tairen de jongen met diepzinnige antwoorden.

Tairen heeft de derde klas van de lagere school niet afgemaakt, maar hij durfde te dromen en zijn wens waar te maken. ‘Ik wil een goede Gawasa man worden. Een goede baan bij een nutsbedrijf, en wat worden in de maatschappij.’ Hij gaf aan dat hij boos zou zijn op zichzelf en het leven als hij deze kans niet zou aangrijpen. Hij wil zijn leven verbeteren.

Een huis bouwen voor zichzelf. Hij wil terug naar school om zijn algemene taalkennis te verbeteren.

Hij kwam in contact met Stichting de Echte Vrijheid, een Kari Yu! partner. Deze organisatie werkt met jongemannen die in aanraking zijn geweest met de justitie, om in het re-integratie programma te participeren. Tijdens de trainingen was Tairen altijd stipt op tijd. In de groep was hij spraakzaam maar toch

ietwat verlegen. Hij solliciteerde met ondersteuning van zijn coach bij een waterinstallatiebedrijf. Zijn sollicitatiegesprek verliep vlot en hij kreeg de baan aangeboden. Hij veranderde van een onzekere stille jongen in een die duidelijk aanwezig was.

Na een maand proefperiode, kreeg Tairen een vast contract. Tairen is niet meer stil en verlegen, hij straalt. Hij is dankbaar en kan nu zijn eigen spullen aanschaffen en zelfs sparen.

Het komend schooljaar wil Tairen terug naar school gaan. Hij heeft nu meer ambities dan ooit en zegt vooral tegen anderen: ‘Durf te dromen boi en waka go miti en’.

DARE TO DREAM AND KEEP LOOKING AHEAD On the first day of the basic life skills and pre-employment training, Tairen shyly walked into the training center. During the classroom exercises the young men were all asked to discuss, where they saw themselves in the next two years. As they talked about their visions for the future, the otherwise quiet Tairen caught everyone’s attention for having the most profound responses. Despite the many challenges he has faced in life, Tairen has big hopes and dreams for his future.

Tairen never finished the third grade of Primary Education. However, he has never given up on dreaming big and working hard to reach his goals.

His greatest wish has always been to work at the State Water Utility Company. He said, “I want to become proficient in gas, water and plumbing skills.

I want to get a good job and be someone.” He believes that he would be disappointed in himself, if he did not seize this opportunity.

Tairen first became involved in the Kari Yu! program through Stichting De Echte Vrijheid (True Freedom Foundation). Kari Yu’s partner foundation was looking to support the reintegration of young men, who had been in conflict with the law.

With support from his job counselor, Tairen was invited for an interview at a water installation company, which resulted in a job offer. After just one month, Tairen was awarded a fixed contract upon completion of his trial period.

Finding employment has changed Tairen for the better. He has transformed from a quiet young man into someone who is very outgoing and confident.

Also, now that he has a job, he is able to buy things for himself, something that he could never do before. He can now also save money for the future.

And regarding his future, Tairen plans to return to school the upcoming academic year, in order to continue his studies. Today Tairen is filled with many new hopes and dreams.

Whenever he has the chance, he spreads his message to others: “Dare to dream boy and make it happen.”
