HAWAII NEWS 16

FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP... She's a fan of department stores like Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdale's because of the many great finds conveniently located in one place.

FAVORITE RESTAURANT... As a lover of vegan food, she enjoys going to Peace Cafe, 'Ai Love Nalo, and Whole Foods.

FAVORITE SKINCARE BRAND... Clarins. Her regimen consists of cleansing twice a day, moisturizing regularly, and always wearing sunscreen.

FAVORITE PLACE IN HAWAII... North Shore. With all of the beautiful scenery, beaches, and delicious local food, Lauren says it is the best place to get the full Hawaii experience.

FUTURE PLANS...

name: Lauren Teruya age: 18 occupation: High School Student

HOBBIES... Lauren started dancing at just 3 years old. When she began participating in musical theater, her love for singing and acting followed. So far, she has starred in 9 productions at Diamond Head Theatre.

PAGEANT LIFE... Miss Hawaii Teen USA was the very first pageant Lauren had ever entered. Winning the title has enabled her to unite two of her passions — modeling and community service — since her public appearances often involve volunteer work at charities, such as Next Step Shelter. 18

Lauren is currently applying to colleges in New York and California to study performing arts because her dream is to become an actress. She credits having the confidence to do what she does now after overcoming and accepting the possibility of rejection as a natural part of the process. Her motto is, “you never know unless you try.”

FUN FACT... Her sister, Kathryn Teruya, is also a Miss Hawaii Teen USA pageant winner, claiming the title in 2012.

5 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NEW INTERNATIONAL MARKET PLACE

Hawai‘i is excited to unveil the newly reimagined International Market Place, now open on Kalākaua Avenue in the heart of Waikīkī. Anchored by New York department store Saks Fifth Avenue, this

charming open air space offers an impressive collection of retailers and restaurants to choose from. While the previous International Market Place was known as a lively plaza lined with small shops, it

has been reborn into a unique shopping destination with an air of luxury and elegance for all to enjoy. Here are the highlights of the new International Market Place.

1) Hawai‘i’s most exciting new stores Shop to your heart’s content at approximately 75

trendy retailers, many of which are the first brick-

and-mortar of its kind in Hawai‘i. The most highly anticipated openings include Anthropologie, Christian Louboutin, Free People, Hollister,

INTERMIX, Jo Malone London, Michael Kors,

Oliver Peoples, Shinola, Trina Turk, Yogasmoga,

and of course the anchor store, Saks Fifth Avenue.

2) The 150-year-old banyan tree and flowing water features The Banyan tree’s iconic presence dates back long before the International Market Place. Therefore,

developers took the necessary measures to protect the tree during construction, allowing its ancient

branches to continue spreading far and wide over

the new shopping center. Together with its cascading rain curtain, streams, and Hawaiian healing garden, International Market Place creates an atmosphere that honors the rich landscape of Hawai‘i. Take a

break at one of the many benches throughout the Market Place and relax in this serene space. 48

3) Lessons about the history and culture of Waikīkī Situated among the banyan tree’s branches is

a historical exhibit about International Market

Place’s original founder, Don the Beachcomber,

which is built to resemble the very treehouse he once lived in. Additionally, if guests wish to gain an even deeper understanding of the unique history and culture of Waikīkī, there are 25

informative plates scattered around the Market

Place featuring a QR code that you can scan with your mobile phone for an interactive cultural experience! Can you find them all?

4) A collection of gourmet eateries on the Grand Lānai

The entire top floor, called the Grand Lānai, is devoted to gourmet dining. Whether you’re craving the culinary stylings of a Michelin-starred restaurant or the authenticity of a meal expertly crafted with locally sourced ingredients, guests can enjoy delicious food in a chic indoor setting or out on the terrace.

The Grand Lānai’s lineup includes eight restaurants: Baku (Spring 2017), Eating House 1849 by Roy Yamaguchi, Flour & Barley, Goma Tei Ramen, Herringbone (Spring 2017), Kona Grill, STRIPSTEAK by Michael Mina, and Yauatcha (February 2017).

5) The sunset ceremony and evening entertainment

Locals and tourists alike gather to watch as the Lamakū Torch Tower is ceremoniously lit ablaze every day after sun down. Its burning flame signifies the start of an evening filled with Hawaiian and Polynesian song and dance performances taking place in the Queen’s Court. In honor of the beloved Queen Emma, the free evening show introduces the stories, traditions, and culture of International Market Place.

The History of the Aloha Shirt Painted with dynamic colors and tropical patterns, nothing says “Hawaii” quite like the Aloha shirt. Although its Polynesian motifs and simple, colorful designs were inspired by the Tahitian pareo, its history is also rich with Japanese influence since many tailor shops in downtown Honolulu were owned by Asian immigrants in the 1920s and 30s. During this time, silk and cotton Aloha shirts featuring Japanese prints became wildly popular thanks to Chinese-American merchant Ellery Chun, who registered the trademark for the term “Aloha shirt” in 1937. After World War II, business attire in Hawaii shifted from European-style jackets and ties to open-collared shirts, which were more suitable for the warm Hawaiian climate. The 1950s became known as the Golden Age of Aloha shirts, where more complex patterns made of rayon entered production full-swing. The shirts from this era are still highly coveted by collectors to this day. In the 1960s, Aloha shirts gained acceptance as typical summer business attire. Around this time, veteran brand “Reyn Spooner” began creating button-down Aloha shirts with a tailored inner lining, which ultimately became the standard for Hawaii businessmen. In the 1970s, it was trendy to find vintage Aloha shirts from the 50s in secondhand clothing stores and by the 1980s, Aloha shirts captured international interest when designers, such as Yves Saint Laurent, began incorporating Hawaiian prints into their luxury fashion lines. Expensive brand name Aloha shirts emerged in the 1990s, making it Hawaii’s signature look. The Aloha shirt is now widely appreciated as a symbol of the Aloha spirit, as it was created in tandem with the multicultural evolution of the Hawaiian Islands.

Waikiki Map

An easy way to navigate Waikiki is by identifying its major

roads. Kalakaua Avenue (running parallel to Waikiki Beach

towards Diamond Head) is Waikiki's primary shopping spot, lined with storefronts and bustling with people. On the

other hand, Kuhio Avenue can be thought of as the main

route for TheBus while the walkway along Ala Wai Canal is a great place for a stroll. Remember, there are many one-way streets within Waikiki so people with rental cars should be cautious while driving.

How to Ride TheBus

Look for the yellow plates labeled “TheBus” along Kuhio Avenue, which is where many designated bus stops are. Bus numbers and destinations are displayed on the front of each bus. Kuhio Avenue (also running parallel to the beach, but inland) is a main route for TheBus, while the Ala Wai Canal, located a block away, is a great place for a stroll. If you need to transfer to another bus, just let the driver know at the time of boarding and he will gladly give you a transfer ticket. Transfer tickets are valid for up to two connections before the printed time at the top and must be presented to the bus driver. As your destination nears, pull the cord above the window and simply push on the hand-operated door as you are exiting. Fare: 1 Adult ticket $2.50, Children $1.25 (6 – 17 years old) Four-day unlimited bus passes ($35) and one-month commuter passes ($60) can be purchased at ABC Stores or at Satellite City Hall inside Ala Moana Center.
