MY HAWAII-PACIFIC JOURNEY - 41

MAUI DIVERS JEWELRY Established in 1958, Maui Divers of Hawaii humbly began as an underwater tour company helping visitors navigate the ocean’s exotic beauty through guided scuba excursions. During a typical deep sea dive off the Moloka‘i Channel, an alluring midnight luster drew the divers’ attention, leading them to the discovery of Hawaiian Black Coral. This rare ocean treasure – now recognized as the official state gem – became the centerpiece to a line of new Hawaiian jewelry launched in 1959. Maui Divers Jewelry's unwavering commitment and care for island waters has remained constant through the decades. With sustainability in mind, Maui Divers Jewelry played a pivotal role in establishing regulations around the protection of these precious Hawaiian corals. Thanks to their mindful harvesting practices, Hawaiian Black Coral continues to thrive. Each Maui Divers piece is meticulously handcrafted from sketch to stone setting at the Jewelry Design Center in Honolulu, one of the largest jewelry retail operations in the nation. Their 35 locations include shops at T Galleria by DFS in Waikiki and Ala Moana Center.

Despite shooting over a thousand rolls of film throughout the years, Peter Lik clearly remembers the very first photograph he had ever taken – a spider web

Peter Lik:

glistening with dew. This defining moment came soon after receiving the gift of a Kodak Brownie camera on his 8th birthday and it was one that would spark the start of a legendary lifelong journey fueled by Lik's fascination with nature. Working tirelessly to perfect his craft, Lik made the decision to leave his home in Australia for the United States, where he was then introduced to the medium format panoramic camera. From there, Lik went on an incredible expedition to accomplish the biggest challenge of his life: photographing landscapes in all 50 states. As of today, the entirely self-taught photographer has earned hundreds of awards, including Master Photographer honors from both the Australian Institute of Professional Photography and the Professional Photographers of America, as well as a place in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History for the masterworks "Ghost" and "Inner Peace." Driven by his desire to give back to the world that he spent so many years capturing, Lik's most recent milestone was the launch of The LIK Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides Charity Through Art by donating proceeds from image sales to aid disadvantaged communities around the globe. As an important partner to a wide array of charities, his philanthropic efforts have been paramount to assisting those in need. Hawaii is home to the LIK Waikiki and LIK Lahaina galleries as well as the LIK Squared kiosk in Ala Moana Center.

Island Slipper: 70 Years of Handmade Aloha “Buy local” isn’t just a saying in Hawaii; it’s a testament to the strong, supportive relationships forged within our tight-knit communities. Dynamic small businesses focused on quality over quantity have always been the life force behind Hawaii’s unique economy. Those that end up transcending generations are often the ones that are carried on by the founders’ children and their children's children because here in the islands, no bond is more powerful than the one between ‘ohana. It is this deep-rooted commitment to heritage that has fueled Island Slipper for the

62

last 70 years and also explains why it is the only remaining slipper manufacturer to make all of its products right here on Oahu. Although keeping true to a “Made in Hawaii” motto has its challenges, the level of quality and creativity that blossoms from smaller in-house production is what ultimately sets them apart from the rest. Even after changing hands from the original Motonaga family to John and Daisy Carpenter and eventually to the next generation of Carpenters – their son Matt and their daughter-in-law Tersha – Island Slipper’s rightful place will always remain within the islands.

Brand Story | Island Slipper

1946

Island Slipper is founded by the Motonaga family whose innovative sandal design was based on the traditional Japanese zori.

1960s

The brand grows in popularity nationwide after introducing a wooden clog heel to mainland markets.

1970s

Island Slipper digs deep into its Hawaii roots and gives their sandals an unmistakable tropical flair by incorporating brighter colors and tapa prints.

1985

The Motonaga family entrusts the business to fellow footwear architect, John Carpenter, and his wife Daisy.

1989

John sets a new industry standard after reworking the slipper design to include contoured heels and sides as well as full arch support for maximum durability and all-day comfort.

1990s Left-right: Tersha, Matt, John, and Daisy Carpenter

2000

Island Slipper expands to resort communities in the Caribbean, the South Pacific, and Central America while also gaining traction in the Japan market.

The Dillingham factory moves to a bigger, better manufacturing space in Pearl City.

2013

Island Slipper opens a retail store in Royal Hawaiian Center soon after being named Best High-End Slipper by HONOLULU Magazine the year before.

2016

The brand's continued success leads them to open another shop in the new Ewa Wing at Ala Moana Center.

The History of the Aloha Shirt

Painted with dynamic colors and tropical patterns, nothing says “Hawaii”

quite like the Aloha shirt. Although its Polynesian motifs and simple, colorful designs were inspired by the Tahitian pareo, its history is also rich with Japanese influence since many tailor shops in downtown Honolulu were

owned by Asian immigrants in the 1920s and 30s. During this time, silk and

cotton Aloha shirts featuring Japanese prints became wildly popular thanks

to Chinese-American merchant Ellery Chun, who registered the trademark for the term “Aloha shirt” in 1937.

After World War II, business attire in Hawaii shifted from European-style jackets and ties to open-collared shirts, which were more suitable for the warm

Hawaiian climate. The 1950s became known as the Golden Age of Aloha shirts, where more complex patterns made of rayon entered production full-swing. The shirts from this era are still highly coveted by collectors to this day.

In the 1960s, Aloha shirts gained acceptance as typical summer business

attire. Around this time, veteran brand “Reyn Spooner” began creating but-

ton-down Aloha shirts with a tailored inner lining, which ultimately became the standard for Hawaii businessmen.

In the 1970s, it was trendy to find vintage Aloha shirts from the 50s in secondhand clothing stores and by the 1980s, Aloha shirts captured international interest when designers, such as Yves Saint Laurent, began incorporating

Hawaiian prints into their luxury fashion lines. Expensive brand name Aloha shirts emerged in the 1990s, making it Hawaii’s signature look.

The Aloha shirt is now widely appreciated as a symbol of the Aloha spirit, as it was created in tandem with the multicultural evolution of the Hawaiian Islands.

Herringbone Waikiki welcomes this new nautical eatery from the mind of Chef Brian Malarkey where “Fish Meats Field” – a melding of the freshest line-caught seafood and the highest-quality beef to create a coastal cuisine that highlights the best of both worlds.

With dreamy maritime décor reminiscent of a summer day spent relaxing on the shore, Herringbone fits seamlessly into the culinary scene of the Hawaiian Islands. Waikiki Map

An easy way to navigate Waikiki is by identifying its major

roads. Kalakaua Avenue (running parallel to Waikiki Beach

towards Diamond Head) is Waikiki's primary shopping spot, lined with storefronts and bustling with people. On the

other hand, Kuhio Avenue can be thought of as the main

route for TheBus while the walkway along Ala Wai Canal is a great place for a stroll. Remember, there are many one-way streets within Waikiki so people with rental cars should be cautious while driving.

How to Ride TheBus

Look for the yellow plates labeled “TheBus” along Kuhio Avenue, which is where many designated bus stops are. Bus numbers and destinations are displayed on the front of each bus. Kuhio Avenue (also running parallel to the beach, but inland) is a main route for TheBus, while the Ala Wai Canal, located a block away, is a great place for a stroll. If you need to transfer to another bus, just let the driver know at the time of boarding and he will gladly give you a transfer ticket. Transfer tickets are valid for up to two connections before the printed time at the top and must be presented to the bus driver. As your destination nears, pull the cord above the window and simply push on the hand-operated door as you are exiting. Fare: 1 Adult ticket $2.50, Children $1.25 (6 – 17 years old) Four-day unlimited bus passes ($35) and one-month commuter passes ($60) can be purchased at ABC Stores or at Satellite City Hall inside Ala Moana Center.
