Morning Presentations

Randall Allan graduated from UBC in 1979. Since then he has been in private practice in Vancouver. In 1984 Dr. Allan joined the R. V. Tucker Cast Gold Study Club of Vancouver under the mentorship of Dr. Richard V. Tucker and continues as an active member. Dr. Allan himself mentors Tucker affiliated study clubs in Victoria and Halifax and has guest mentored and lectured in Italy and the US.

A technique for cast gold restoration of premolar and molar teeth will be discussed that relies on extracoronal retention but requires less tooth reduction and tissue impingement than alternative restorations while exhibiting equivalent, or sometimes superior, aesthetics to full coverage crowns.

Kayla Ragosin-Miller is a dental hygiene graduate from the University of Manitoba. As the hygienist at BC Children’s Hospital she is currently involved in the research and development of helping children on the Autism spectrum accept dental treatment in the dental office without the use of general anesthetic. She is also a part time instructor and works in private practice.

Children diagnosed with developmental disabilities (i.e., Autism, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Down Syndrome, etc.) are some of the most challenging for dental practitioners to treat. Learn different approaches to potentially eliminate the use of general anesthetic for routine procedures.

Karl Gunderson has worked in private practice, as an independent practitioner and now in public health. He has focused on how to improve the oral health of young children by educating their parents and caregivers. Karl is proudest of his family. Every day his wife and three children inspire him in all aspects of life whether it is at home, work or play.

Babies do not come with training manuals. Educating parents of infants can make a difference in their oral health knowledge; the key is early intervention. This enlightening presentation will show how a population based approach is achieving that goal.

Young Tze Kuah graduated from UBC in 1993. He is a Certified Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry and a Certified Specialist in Orthodontics in BC. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition to full time private practice, he is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UBC giving seminars to the pediatric dental and orthodontic graduate programs.

Dentists often face the difficult problem of restoring hypoplastic first permanent molars in young patients. This session describes what happens after extraction, discusses factors that determine the extraction decision (including timing) as well as modern approaches to space management.
