NVELC to leverage more than $10,000 in grants Nestucca Valley Early Learning Center recently received three grants — worth more than $13,000 in total — to help serve its students as the center strives to support the community it serves. The three grants include a $5,500 “Mini-Grant” from Northwest Parenting and two grants from the NW Early Learning Hub — $5,100 from the Kinder Transitions program and $3,000 from the Learning Hub’s Social and Emotional Learning Grant, which is designed to expand opportunities for parent support and “to meet the educational, social, emotional and basic needs of families with children under age six.” The Northwest Parenting Grant funds will go towards an evidence-based parent engagement series. “What that will look like is one of (our staff) will be trained to facilitate a proven program, and we will offer that to families in district — either in person or virtually,” said program director Diane Wilkinson. “Our focus for that parent education, at this time, is the social emotional health of our community and the children.” The Kinder Transitions grant will fund an effort by NVELC to reach out to children that are graduating to kindergarten next year. Wilkinson said the goal is to make sure they’re socially and emotionally ready as well as that they are at an appropriate stage in their skills. “We also will reach out to families with children that already went out to kindergarten in this unprecedented year,” Wilkinson added. “If any of them need support we can provide that through (this funding)” The SEL grant will allow NVELC to add to the work they are already doing to address social and emotional concerns. “(This) will be tied into the Parent Engagement grant so we can purchase more or better materials and offer staff paid time to attend these and become trained in it,” Wilkinson said. Nestucca Valley Early Learning Center is currently operating as one of the three buildings of the Nestucca Valley School District, which means all maintenance and upgrades — as well as the ability to seek grants such as the Seismic Retrofit Grant — are handled by NVSD. As well, all staff are now employed by NVSD. With the change, NVELC has maintained its status as a nonprofit. For more information about NVELC, visit nvelc. com.

TILLAMOOK COUNTY PARKS expects to have new pay-to-park meters at Cape Kiwanda and the Pacific City Turnaround operational by the week of March 15, but enforcement could come later.
It’s going to cost you
Pay-to-park machines installed at Cape, Turnaround but won’t be operational until week of March 15-19 By TIM HIRSCH of the Sun Tillamook County Parks Department has installed the fee machines it plans to use as part of the county’s new fee system at Cape Kiwanda and the Pacific City Turnaround (west end of Pacific Avenue), but they won’t be activated until the week of March 1519, according to Parks Director JoAnn Woelfle. The new machines are two of the five that the county has purchased. As previously reported in the Sun, the five solar-powered automated fee machines came at a cost of $11,503 each. Sheriff Joshua Brown discussed the concept of having an educational period of a few weeks once the machines are operational before the parking fee is enforced. “Once the machines are activated there will be an initial period of time for familiarizing and educating the public about the new parking fee process that is in place and any initial enforcement will be aimed at education rather than fines,” Woelfle told the Sun. The daily fee for use of both the Cape Kiwanda lot and the Pacific City Turnaround is $10. Users can also purchase a daily pass or an annual pass ($55 or $45 for seniors, disabled veterans or Oregon Trail Card holders) by visiting https://www.co.tillamook. or.us/gov/parks/.
