GUIDING FIRMWIDE I N N OVAT I O N Q& A W I T H K E N T P E T E R S O N Rarely do individuals rise to become as influential in their field as P2S Chief Engineer Kent Peterson. A former ASHRAE International president who helped the federal government define Zero Energy Buildings, Kent has had a major role in steering the mechanical engineering profession to where it is today. His influence can be felt throughout P2S and especially in the Incubator, our research and development program. This idea workshop is responsible for our best new ideas, operational improvements, and closer studio collaboration. We spoke to Kent about what he expects from the Incubator in the near and distant future, his role within the program and how incubator developments might impact P2S as it moves forward. What was the initial impetus for the Incubator program? How did it begin? KP: Ssusan Forte O’Neil and I met on the CSULB College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Council. We collaborated on creating the P2S Incubator to foster innovation and entrepreneurship with interested P2S team members in our discussions. The P2S Incubator program kicked off in 2011. Can you explain how the Incubator operates? What kind of employees are members? KP: The P2S Incubator is a think-tank hub that houses various teams from diverse engineering backgrounds who meet on a regular basis to collaborate and develop new ideas, innovations, and solutions for the betterment of P2S and our clients. Through a blend of networking and mentoring, trusted advisors and team members share ideas and solutions geared toward benefitting our clients’ needs. The P2S Incubator paves the way for trusted partnerships toward growth and client success through innovative solutions built upon trust, integrity, purpose, value, and critical thinking. The P2S Incubator is made up of an Advisory Board and a Dev Team with Ssusan coaching and providing guidance to both groups.

KENT PETERSON

P2S COO and Chief Engineer kent.peterson@p2sinc.com

So what’s your role within the program? KP: Kevin and I served as the Executive Sponsors of the P2S Incubator. We review ideas and initiatives provided by the incubator teams for potential implementation into P2S. These initiatives typically improve internal processes or add services for our clients. We also create ideas for initiatives when needed. How did COVID impact the incubator process during the past year? KP: The P2S Incubator program runs on a calendar year basis. Interested employees can apply during the application period late in the year following an email to all staff. The teams had just begun work on their initiatives when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March of 2020. The Dev teams were agile and able to pivot from their original assigned initiatives to new initiatives centered on how to continue business during the shutdowns and restrictions imposed during the pandemic.

Tell us about past incubator ideas that had a direct impact on operations? KP: Some more significant external service improvements born out of the P2S Incubator include forming a Commissioning Group, standardizing our microgrid analysis process, and the implementation of 3D laser scanning to improve our service on existing facilities prior to our competition using this technology. Some examples of internal improvements from the P2S Incubator include P2S podcasts, P2S Reality videos, P2S Innovation Culture, our new hire 12 -month Development Plan for each discipline and creating our discipline coordination checklists. During the current pandemic, the P2S Incubator also developed the Half Hour Huddles and Interdisciplinary Huddles to continue our internal professional development while working remote, Internal MS Team Interactive Forums and Creative Tips for Business Development COVID-19.

Are there any initiatives the Incubator is working on now that might bear fruit in the near future? KP: Some of the current year initiatives that have already started to be rolled out this year include the series of webinars on career path guidance and the Interdisciplinary Huddle sessions. The Salesforce Project Management Task Force has rolled out a new PM Dashboard for all project managers. Other initiatives that will be available later this year include a Hybrid Remote Work Policy, Improving P2S Client Service, processes and tracking system to ensure 100% of our new building projects have energy efficiency targets, improved building control system design guidance across disciplines, and expanding our services with drone technology. How does the Incubator figure into P2S’ approach to the next ten years? KP: The P2S Incubator and its volunteers are critical for P2S to remain nimble and adjust to changing market needs in the future. P2S wants to lead and not follow in many of these industry trends in providing exceptional service to our clients while fulfilling our team member’s dreams.

P2S 30TH A N N I V E R SA RY CA M PA I G N We’re excited to share our most expansive communication campaign yet! We always want to connect with clients, so our team has been hard at work producing new content, case studies, videos, live webinars and more. Our 30th anniversary year is ideal for getting to know us better, and we’re launching a multi-phase concept highlighting how client experiences define our services. What does that mean? It means that we look at things through client perspectives, visualize their lived experiences and then design solutions that improve those experiences. It’s an opportunity to reiterate that solving your problems is our top priority. The campaign launched in July and continue through October. A special website serves as the hub for the campaign, featuring subpages for experiences in Healthcare, Safety & Security, Our Brightest Minds and Global Connectivity. Users are able to watch videos, read case studies and infographics, complete surveys, register for webinars and live events and more, all from

We based the four P2S Experiences on essential sectors where critical facility infrastructure is vital. We design facilities where loved ones can receive healthcare and where our best and brightest are enabled to learn and discover. We design for facilities that keep global trade and communication moving. We also design interconnected surveillance, physical security and communication technology systems that safeguard people wherever they live, work, study or play. We truly hope you enjoy as much or as little of this campaign as you’d like. We’re excited to connect with you throughout it.

NEW! The Road to Decarbonization Real Solutions for Real Challenges As we extend our journey and experience the effects of greenhouse gas emissions, we work to help our clients inventory emissions, implement a decarbonization plan, and meet their energy goals. Fact: The largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities in the US is from burning fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation. These GHGs trap heat and make the planet warmer. Human activities are responsible for almost all of the increase in GHGs in the atmosphere over the last 150 years. It is important to be good stewards and minimize these GHG emissions by promoting energy conservation, providing clean renewable sources to offset overall energy use and minimizing natural gas consumption by promoting electrification. Legislation has been passed and programs have been implemented to track and encourage facilities to minimize their GHG emissions and equip society to stabilize the earth’s climate.

30 Years of Long-Lasting Solutions Listen to P2S co-founders Kevin and Kent Peterson speak about our design philosophy, emphasizing delivering efficient, sustainable, and durable solutions that serve clients well for decades.

Building Partners for Life How often do you think about the offices, schools, hospitals, stores, and venues that you’ve visited throughout your life? We think about them all the time; it’s our job! This video illustrates how we have a hand in designing buildings that touch every stage of our lives.
