t’s that time of year - the Phuket International Blues Festival is once again upon us. The Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa is the venue for this world-famous event due to take place on 25-26 February 2011. This year’s line-up includes its usual talented ensemble of musicians such as Curtis Salgado, Mason Ruffner, AkashA, Disraeli Gears, The New Machine plays Pink Floyd, The Prodigal Sons, Phuket All-Star Blues Band with Andy Gonzales, Torgny Sandgren, John Meyer’s Blues Express and last but not least, Robert ‘One-Man’ Johnson. The blues is one of the cornerstones of modern music and one could suggest that Rock ‘n’ Roll and soul music might have never existed without its influence. Previous performers of the festival such as Eric Bibb, Charlie Musselwhite and Mitch Woods are all nominated for awards at the 2011 Blues Foundation’s Annual Awards (the Oscars of the blues industry) in Memphis on May 5th. This just goes to prove the quality of the artists the Phuket International Blues Festival attracts year upon year. Who could possibly forget electrifying performances from Eric Bibb at the 2009 festival, wooing the crowd with his own blend of blues, gospel and soul? Such memorable moments have ensured the festival always receives critical acclaim.

Curtis Salgado will be the headline act at this month’s Phuket International Blues Festival. This year’s headlining act on the Sunday night is Curtis Salgado. Four years ago, Curtis was diagnosed with liver cancer and only given 8 months to live unless he received a liver transplant costing in the region of half a million dollars. Without medical insurance, it wasn’t looking good for the talented musician. Several benefits

were organised by some of the blues’ most well known names such as Miller, Cray, Taj Mahal and, Charlie Musselwhite culminating with Curtis getting his liver transplant. Two years later he was able to record ‘Clean Getaway’, an album whose title has an obvious double meaning. The trials and tribula-

tions of the past few years have given Curtis a fresh perspective on life. “I’m playing music with the most incredible people,” he says, “people are supporting me and I’ve got nothing to complain about. To me, I’ve won the lottery; I’ve won all the Grammys. I don’t need stardom to feel validated. Of course, I’d like to sell a lot of

records, but on a personal level, I don’t care. I’m alive! People are throwing so much love at me it’s embarrassing. It makes me humble. So I’m just trying to stick to my guns, perfect my craft and make great music!” Such heart-warming stories of Continued Page 3

Celebrating the Chinese New Year C hinese New Year 2011 falls on the 3rd February, ushering in the year of the rabbit. The Chinese are famous for their colourful history and vast culture. Their calendar revolves in 12-year lunar cycles, which has been continuous since the 14th century, predating the Gregorian calendar by 300 years. Each year is depicted by an animal, which is similar to our own horoscope and star sign system in the western world. Chinese folklore states that each of the 12 animals were arguing about who was to head the cycle of years. The gods were asked to decide who was to be the first animal in the cycle, so they organised a contest with the first to reach the other side of the river bank to be the first animal in the calendar year. The 12 animals gathered on the river bank and jumped in the water. Unknown to the ox, the rat had jumped on his back. As the ox was about to set foot ashore first, the rat jumped off and beat him past the finishing post. The pig, being so lazy, finished the race last. This is why the rat is the first animal in the Chinese calendar, the ox is second and the pig is last. Anyone born in 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987 or 1999 were born in the year of the rabbit. Rabbit people are considered to be talented, ambitious and articulate. They can also be reserved, virtuous and have excellent taste. Also known as gossip

mongers and often financially lucky, rabbit people tend to be admired, trusted, tactful and very generous. They very rarely lose their temper and have very astute business brains that never back out of a contract. Because of their financial good luck, this can make them lucrative gamblers who seem to choose the right way every time, however, being so wise and conservative, they do not gamble so often. The rabbit person is very compatible with other animal years such as the pig, sheep and dog. When discussing the Chinese calendar animal years, we have to remember it is not the physical size of the animal that matters but rather its inner nature. Famous people born in the year of the rabbit include Dusty Springfield, Sting, Whitney Houston, Bob Hope, John Cleese, Roger Moore, George Orwell, Orson Wells and Norman Wisdom. Quite an illustrious bunch there! The Chinese have many festivals but none more elaborate and colourful than the New Year celebrations. The ethos of the Chinese New Year is similar to the western world, turning over a new leaf and congratulating each other on making it through another year. The main difference is that the Chinese New Year really emphasizes strong family ties and is a good time for long lost relatives to reunite. Fourteen per cent of the Thai population is of Chinese origin and this

Rabbit people are very astute in business is why all Chinese festivals are celebrated throughout the country with gusto. You can see many Chinese influences in Phuket Town and especially in southern Thai cities such as Haad Yai. This makes the Chinese New Year celebrations in Thailand so passionate and meaningful.

The celebrations start on the first day of the lunar month and carry on for 15 days culminating with the Lantern Festival on the final day. Fire crackers and a colourful carnival atmosphere will besiege most of Southeast Asia on the 3rd February, so expect a fun packed 15 days.

Live international stand-up comedy

T

he first Phuket Punchline Comedy of 2011 sees three of the UK comedy circuit’s finest comedians treading the boards at the Holiday Inn Resort on Wednesday 23rd February. Nick Doody hails from Yorkshire and has been blessed with a very sharp mind, a mind which he puts to outstanding use in comedy. The second stand-up comedian is Josh Howie, who has been likened to a young Woody Allen, having a challenging, intelligent wit, and a gaggle of TV producers wanting his signature. Holding it all together as the third performer is the very likeable and charming Michael Legge who is regarded as being one of the best in the business. It is sure to be an energy-packed giggle-fest full of fun, frolics, and laughter. Nick Doody is one of brightest talents on the comedy circuit. Sharp, topical and not afraid to say what he thinks, his brand of political comedy and satire has won fans all over. Nick’s career as a stand-up comedian got off to a pretty good start when, whilst still a student, Nick supported the late Bill Hicks

Nick Doody on his final tour of the UK. Bill himself had requested Nick. Josh Howie is an ex-public schoolboy, raised as a Buddhist who then trained as a Rabbi before being kicked off the program for being caught with a naked (nonJewish) girl, so perhaps it was inevitable that he would go on to become a stand-up comedian. Josh has also been filmed for the Paramount Comedy shows Comedy Store, World Stands Up and Comedy Blue and can currently be seen as the presenter of Movie Geek, the Sky Movies

Michael Legge show that offers all the latest news in the world of cinema. Michael Legge is a stand-up comedian who has performed in countries as far flung as Singapore, India, USA, Canada, Holland, Germany, Australia and Britain. He is known as an improviser and was part of the very successful Scriptease Show in London’s West End and is currently thought of as “the loud one” in the London Comedy Improv. The Punchline Comedy Club (PCC) is a professional organization that has been promoting

Josh Howie stand-up comedy around Asia and the Far East since 1994. Punchline is proud to select its comedy talent from the very best of the UK comedy circuit, the same comedy circuit that produced the many comedy stars. Of course, some of these comedians are now stars and so have moved off the comedy circuit to either the UK ‘A’ list or on to Hollywood. This allows the next generation of ‘soon-to-be’ stars to move up the ladder and get noticed. These are the comedians that Punchline select: the stars of the future.

A normal Phuket Punchline show consists of three top stand-up comedians from the ‘alternative’ comedy circuit, so called to distinguish it from the overtly sexiest, racist, and plagiarist mainstream circuit; an interval for drinks to be bought, cigarettes to be smoked, and toilets to be used; and a very reasonably priced bar. The venue is the Taksina Room in the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket. The room is fully air-conditioned and the seats are laid out theatre style, every one providing a great view. www.phuketcomedy.com

A special day for lovers to enjoy

T

hailand is the perfect place to spend a romantic holiday just in time for Valentine’s Day. Imagine smooching up next to your significant other under the gaze of the stars whilst listening to the ocean waves rolling up just meters away! Endearing image isn’t it? Valentine’s Day, or rightly named Saint Valentine’s Day, is celebrated on 14 February and is one such day that the male of the species should always remember or risk being disemboweled! There are many contrasting stories attributed to Valentine’s Day with the strongly held belief that Saint Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. Suffering his fateful death on the 14th February, 269 A.D, the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that Saint Valentine had left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, for whom he befriended during his incarceration and signed it with “From Your Valentine”. St. Valentine had also served as a priest at a temple during the reign of Emperor Claudis, who had then jailed Valentine for defying him. In the Saint’s honor, Pope Gelasius in 496A.D, decided to set aside February 14.

12

Red roses are a popular Valentine’s Day gift for that special person in one’s life. Some historians believe Valentine’s Day to have originated from the Pagan Roman Festival of Fertility, Lupercalia. The 14th of February was a day especially devoted to setting aside love letters in Pagan Rome. This holiday was in honor of Juno, the Queen of Gods and the Patroness of Marriage. The 14th was also a day that young girl’s names were

written on paper, thrown into jars and picked out by boys. The boys and girls would them be paired for the entire length of Lupercalia. Such pairings sometimes blossomed into long-term relationships. The Catholic Church later changed the names of the fleshblood girls to the names of dead saints to subvert this lusty Pagan practice. Indeed, many Pagan

festivals and practices have been adopted and redesign by Christianity and Catholicism for the modern palette. With the Catholic Church changing the essence of the festivities, sanitizing it for Catholicism, they created the St. Valentine’s Day we know and love today! The modern world has made this Pagan festival our own, inter-

twined with consumerism and repackaged. This doesn’t take away from its new meaning, which is to express your love for the other half by showering them with gifts and romantic gestures. Another classic Valentine’s Day trait is to secretly send a woman or man who you desire a card anonymously. This adds more mystery to this mysterious day, although in this day and age you have to be careful with stalker legislations and restraining orders – but where there’s a will, there’s a way! This brings us back to experiencing Valentine’s Day in Thailand. Beachside destinations such as Phuket, Pattaya, Koh Samui and Hua Hin are the ideal spots to spend a romantic holiday, due to the tranquil and beautiful atmosphere of Thailand’s subtropical holiday coastal resorts. Nothing heightens the sensuality of lovers more than strolling along a deserted beach hand in hand. You simply can’t do this in Europe during those arctic February months or risk hyperthermia. Make sure you have a great Saint Valentine’s Day, and don’t forget to buy your significant other a gift or send a desirable partner an anonymous card, which could culminate in the relationship of your dreams.

Fair has something for everyone F

ebruary in Phuket is a busy time with festivals being held throughout the month. At the top of the list has to be the Wat Chalong Fair at Chalong Temple. This annual fair brings thousands of revellers to the temple over a 7 day period from the 3rd to 9th of February. The fair first started in 1933 by local farmers who lived in and around Chalong. They started the fair in the temples grounds to celebrate the completion of the harvest after a long period of hard work. They would get together on the temple’s grounds and enjoy a fun fair – if they could only see how the fair has evolved over the years! Chalong Temple is situated approximately 3 kilometers from Chalong circle on Chao Fa West Road. The duration of the festival will be a bustling hive of activity. Whether you are a tourist, expat, local or a family, the fair has something for everyone. Combining hundreds of market stalls selling everything from CDs and DVDs, to clothes and pets, alongside a mass of local eating options and fairground games and rides for kids and adults alike - for fun, games, shopping and socialising, Chalong Fair can’t possibly be beat. Although the fair is at its most vibrant at night, it is a good idea to visit in the daytime if you want to

Wat Chalang Fair - not to be missed circumnavigate the markets without too much hassle. After nightfall, hordes of people converge on the temple grounds and it can be quite difficult to get around. Make sure you check out the food stalls, which are mainly situated within close proximity to each other.

Nobody loves a fair more than the kids. If you are a family visiting Phuket during this time, you simply must take your children along. Partake in fair games such as throwing darts at balloons or hook-a-duck – it will take you right back to your childhood.

Equipped with bouncy castles and standard fairground rides such as the Big Wheel, you will feel right at home and your kids will love you forever. Wat Chalong has always been one of Phuket’s favourite, most historical and beautiful temples.

Indeed, it’s probably the most visited temple on the island. The finger bone of Buddha is reportedly kept in the special ‘Chedi’ of Chalong’s largest temple. Chalong Temple is usually a serene and peaceful Buddhist haven during the main part of the year, but as soon as the fair hits town, music is reverberating around its four corners with the succulent essence of BBQ in the air tantalizing the senses. The transformation in atmosphere is phenomenal. Because the fair is situated in Chalong – which isn’t generally considered a full-on tourist area – the vast majority of visitors to the fair are Thai. This is perfect for those who want to indulge in a spot of authentic Thai culture and people watching. See what makes the locals tick. You will soon realise that Thais are fundamentally party people who love to socialise while eating and drinking the night away with family and friends. The fair is set over 7 days, which ensures you will have many opportunities to check it out. Be sure not to miss out on the fun at Chalong Fair – you will tell your family and friends about it when you get back home.

Stay alive: Don’t dive into dangerous waters

P

HUKET’S beaches are amongst the best in the world, but they also have a dangerous, killer side to them. Dozens of tourists drown every year in Phuket after becoming caught in the death-dealing riptides, and it is important that all visitors understand and respect the local beach warning flag system. If the flags on the beach are red, it means the beach is unsafe, so DON’T swim there. Don’t even wade into the water for a paddle because the rips and undercurrents can be very strong, even a few meters from shore, and are powerful enough to sweep you off your feet and into deeper water. The undercurrents are particularly dangerous during the summer months, from May until November, when the seas are stirred up by the monsoon winds and become even wilder than usual. Even good swimmers, including former lifeguards, have ended up dead

after ignoring the warning flags and being caught in the rips. There are lifeguards on duty at most Phuket beaches, but they are usually poorly trained and ill-equipped to handle difficult rescue operations. The best defence against an accidental drowning is to be aware of the beach flags, and obey any instructions or advice offered by the lifeguards on duty. They may be poorly trained, but they know more about their own beach than anyone else. Stay safe and don’t become another statistic. We need all the tourist we have and we can’t afford to lose any.

An insight into town’s history and culture O

ld Phuket Town is one of the most unique places in Thailand, touched with colonial influenced architecture and history like no other destination in the country. The Sino-Portuguese architecture is simply to die for, harking back to another point in history where things were so different. The interesting aspect of Old Phuket Town is how the colonial styles blend seamlessly together with Phuket’s Chinese influenced origins. The 12th Annual Old Phuket Town Festival runs from the 3rd to the 6th of February, 2011. Activities such as the Phuket Baba Light Show, rickshaw tours around the streets, Chinese opera performances, Chinese folk dancing troupes and much more, will light up the proceedings and give you an insight into Phuket’s rich cultural history. You will also encounter hundreds of food stalls selling delicious local snacks and drinks and partake in an authentic Thai party atmosphere celebrating Phuket’s roots.

The festival is held in conjunction with Chinese New Year in the pulsating heart of the old town on Thalang, Krabi, and Phuket Roads and along Soi Rommanee. Thalang Road and Soi Rommanee will be converted into walking streets during the festival where you can meander around and absorb this special part of Thailand. The colonial architecture in Old Phuket Town was due to the tin mine industry that blossomed during the 16th century, but it wasn’t until the 18th century when Europeans and especially the Portuguese and British were invited to the island by the Chinese to take advantage of the tin mine wealth. No one is quite sure about the exact time when these colonial style buildings were constructed, but photographs going back to the middle of the 19th century show the buildings were already well established by this period. There are two distinctive styles that are apparent, such as the Sino-Portuguese shop houses and

the Sino-Colonial style mansions. Add this to the obvious Chinese style constructions and you have diversity to Phuket Town that you simply can’t see in other parts of Thailand. Although this style is unique to Thailand, the Old Phuket Town streets resemble other British Straits Settlements that are more evident in places such as Penang in Malaysia, Singapore and Malacca. The far-reaching colonial feel is an intricate part of Phuket Town’s atmosphere. Sino-Portuguese mansions such

as Phra Pitak Chinpracha Mansion, Tai Hua Museum, Phuket Provincial Hall, Phuket Philatelic Museum, Baan Klung Jinda Restaurant and Baan Chinpracha will give you a fascinating glimpse into these architectural styles unique to Phuket and not seen anywhere else in Thailand. The inaugural Old Phuket Town Festival was in 1998, which has rapidly grown ever since, providing a well needed boost for Phuket’s heritage and culture. The festival is a celebration of the old

Phuket style and is also an educational insight for those who wish to know more about the colonial days of South East Asia. The special qualities of Old Phuket Town ingrain an extraordinary sense of belonging for those who grew up on the island. This is why the 12th Annual Old Phuket Town Festival is a must-visit event for those travelling through Phuket in February or those who live on the island wish to know more of its illustrious history and colourful cultural identity.

he Phuket Community Foundation was today celebrating the success of its 2011 Race Day Fundraiser, held at Laguna Phuket on Sunday January 23. While the bean-counters are still at work, PCF Director Janyaporn Morel said, “We know that income from donors and sponsors, and from the public on the day, was well over B800,000. That’s a big number for us.

“We had more than 30 sponsors for the event. We were overwhelmed by their generosity. I’d like to thank in particular Laguna Phuket for giving us such a wonderful venue, Dream Gallery for sponsoring the entire duck race, and our top prize donors, Silolona, Banyan Tree and Wahoo.” Apart from the duck race, PCF Race Day featured dragon boat races, a kayak race and a cardboard box race for children.

On stage, the crowd - estimated to be about 1,500 - were entertained by songs from a schoolchildren’s choir, a magic show, several dance shows and a duckling costume contest for small children. “The feedback we had was overwhelmingly positive,” said Ms Morel. “We’re very grateful to all who supported us, and to everyone who came to enjoy the fun. We look forward to doing it again next year.”

Thailand Q&A Q: Are the staff who work in the small roadside massage parlors fully trained, and would it be safe? A: If you are looking for a ‘proper’ massage in the hands of a fully trained specialist, it would be better to visit a real spa or health club to ensure you receive the best services possible. The roadside massage shops are very hit and miss, although they are quite cheap – you get what you pay for. Q: Are there any poisonous or dangerous animals or insects? A: Yes there are a few poisonous animals in Thailand, although there are very few incidents. Generally speaking, you will only come into contact with venomous creatures when in countryside or jungle environments. Thailand has poisonous snakes, scorpions, jellyfish and centipedes, but 99.9 per cent of travelers never have any problems. Q: What are the penalties for drug possession in Thailand? A: If you are caught in possession of drugs in Thailand, whether it is a so-called ‘soft drug’, such as cannabis, or a Class A narcotic such as heroin, you will be in deep trouble. Although some forms of recreational drugs are more socially accepted in Europe, you face the harshest punishments in Thailand, and you could end up spending 25 years in a Thai prison. Stay away from drugs, or it could be a mistake you’ll regret for the rest of your life. Q: In case of emergencies, how good are the hospitals? A: If you have holiday insurance which covers medical bills from accidents or illness, you will most likely be treated in one of the nation’s international hospitals, which are a lot like five-star hotels with private rooms and extensive food menus. The facilities in Thailand’s international hospitals are probably better than those of your own country. They really are that good.

Thailand Etiquette

Do’s&Don’t in Thailand

Thai social nuances are different to those in the western world. Whereas we reserve the rights to speak out against how our country’s affairs are conducted, Thailand is a little different.

DON’T say anything negative about the Thai Royal Family

Thailand’s Royal Family is revered across the nation and must be treated with the utmost respect at all times. Never criticize the King of Thailand or any member of the Royal Family, or you could find yourself charged with Lese Majeste, which can incur a hefty fine or even a lengthy prison sentence. It has happened before and it will happen again. Be warned.

DON’T think a zebra crossing is safe

In the western world, zebra crossings are safe zones, where drivers are obliged to stop as you cross. In Thailand, cars won’t always stop for someone on a crossing, so look both ways before you step onto the road, and be careful.

DON’T cause a Thai to lose face

Thailand is a non-confrontational nation and Thais would rather smile than argue. Never ridicule a Thai in private or public, because this will make them lose face. This is an important aspect of Thai culture and should always be remembered.

DON’T wait for all your food to come before you start eating

It is normal in Thai restaurants for all your food to come at the same time. The dishes will often come at staggered intervals, so DO NOT wait for all your food to come before you start tucking in.

DON’T wear skimpy clothing in a temple

When visiting a Buddhist Temple, wear appropriate clothing. Skimpy clothing should be reserved for the beach and the discotheques. It is especially important that women DO NOT wear short skirts, low-cut shirts or revealing shorts when visiting a place of worship in Thailand.

DO check your laundry

This is not a life or death issue, but Thai laundry services are notorious for returning the wrong items. If you don’t check, you might find your expensive designer brand threads have been swapped for clothes that don’t fit and you don’t want. If this happens to you, remember someone else is probably wondering what to do with your clothes.

DON’T lose your temper

Losing your temper, or shouting at someone, are serious no no’s in Thailand. It is considered the worst manners to explode in a fit of rage in a public place. By doing so, you will lose face and will probably attract even more trouble or be completely ignored.

DO exercise tolerance

It is the norm in the western world to become visibly agitated when things don’t go our way. Communication breakdowns in Thailand can lead to heated disagreements. DO NOT lose your temper in the heat of the moment, even if it’s a dispute over a restaurant or bar bill. Just smile, do the right thing, and you will find things work out just fine.

DON’T expect Thais to give you accurate directions

Because Thais are constantly afraid of losing face, if you ask a Thai for directions and they don’t know, they will pretend to know where it is, even though they don’t. You will then be sent on a wild goose chase, probably in the opposite direction of your intended destination.

DO leave tips in restaurants and bars

In Thailand, it is customary to leave a tip after paying your bill in bars and restaurants. If the service has been good, leave at tip. In most bars and restaurants, 20-100 baht will be very much appreciated by the lowly paid staff, many of whom rely on their tips to pay for life’s basics.
